Chapter 38: Chu Yang vs. Snape

Hermione suddenly tugged on Chu Yang's sleeve and asked softly, "Can you tell me what actually happened? I refuse to believe so many people would stay in the common room all night just for fun."

"I heard the Slytherin common room is under the Black Lake, dark and cold. What's so interesting about that?"

Hermione's thinking was more like that of an adult, and even Professor McGonagall didn't quite buy the story. So, as soon as class ended, she went to the infirmary to visit Malfoy.

Chu Yang didn't bother to make up any excuses. After all, the truth of him beating people up would come out sooner or later. They were only knocked out, not suffering from amnesia.

So, Chu Yang simply told the truth, "They blocked me outside the dormitory last night, saying I wasn't pureblood and didn't deserve to be in Slytherin. They planned to make things difficult for me. I was tired and just wanted to sleep, so I didn't have time to mess around with them. I had no choice but to 'invite' them out."

Upon hearing this, Hermione stopped in her tracks, her mouth agape, staring at Chu Yang in shock. "When you say 'invite'... do you mean the usual 'invite' we know?"

Chu Yang thought for a moment and shook his head. "There's a slight difference."

"More than a slight difference, I'd say," Hermione took a deep breath, feeling the temperature around them drop a bit. "You do know that assaulting your classmates could get you in trouble with the school, right? Aren't you worried?"

"Who said one person could beat up so many? If anything, they were the ones attacking me. I was just defending myself," Chu Yang rolled his eyes and shrugged helplessly. "Do you expect me to stand there and let them bully me?"

"True enough. They started it, after all!" Hermione, thinking of how Chu Yang was being ostracized by the other Slytherin freshmen for not being pureblood, immediately felt a sense of empathy and became indignant on his behalf.

As they chatted about the events of the previous night, they walked into the classroom.

"Isn't Hermione from Gryffindor? Why does she keep hanging around Chu Yang?" Ron, watching Hermione and Chu Yang having a good conversation, suddenly felt uncomfortable.

"There's no need to draw such clear lines between houses. Plus, they probably have more in common; they're both smart and knowledgeable," Harry replied matter-of-factly, not thinking there was any issue.

After their experience in Transfiguration class earlier, the new students quickly took their seats upon entering the classroom, fearing Snape's strictness.

Compared to Professor McGonagall's stern and meticulous demeanor, Professor Snape exuded a dark, terrifying presence. It felt like anyone who dared to upset him would face dire consequences.

Once the students were seated, Professor Snape entered the classroom, his robes billowing dramatically as he walked.

He probably thought he looked cool, but Chu Yang thought he resembled a giant moth fluttering into the room...

"This class doesn't require you to foolishly wave your wands around or spout incantations. I doubt many of you can appreciate the deep science and precision behind potion-making."

Leaning against the desk, Snape's face was expressionless. Just as he was about to continue, his eyes swept over the room and noticed many students were missing.

"This isn't the first class of the day, is it? Why are so many students late?" Snape's voice was filled with anger as he stared at the empty seats. "And Slytherin students, no less?!"

With a loud slap, Snape's hand hit the desk, making a booming sound that sent a shockwave through the room.

At that moment, there was a knock on the door.

Snape, clearly irritated at being interrupted, frowned as he composed himself, walking swiftly to the door and opening it. Outside stood Professor McGonagall, returning from the infirmary.

Professor McGonagall glanced into the classroom, spotting Chu Yang with a resigned expression, then gestured for Snape to step outside to talk.

Listening to McGonagall explain the situation with the absent Slytherin freshmen, Snape first looked confused, then fell into a contemplative silence.

Meanwhile, the students inside the classroom whispered among themselves, curious as to why Professor McGonagall had interrupted Snape's lesson.

At this age, curiosity about everything is at its peak.

About five minutes later, Snape returned to the classroom with a peculiar expression.

Instead of heading to the podium, he walked straight to Chu Yang and stared at him coldly.

"Mr. Chu Yang, could you kindly explain how you managed to prevent several dormitory mates from attending class today with just your fists?"

"I'm genuinely curious, but don't tell me that you, coming from an orphanage, also know martial arts. That would be utterly ridiculous!"

Snape openly mocked Chu Yang, and his words caused an uproar in the classroom.

The reason those Slytherin students couldn't come to class was that Chu Yang had beaten them up?!

Instantly, the room was filled with chatter!

Harry and Ron were both shocked, their mouths hanging open as they looked at Chu Yang with admiration. Wow, had he really taken down that many people all by himself?

Just yesterday, Ron had told Harry that Chu Yang, as a non-pureblood, would definitely have a tough time in Slytherin.

Harry had also been worried about Chu Yang's situation.

When they saw him safe and sound this morning, Harry had quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

As the only two orphans in their year, if anything happened to Chu Yang, Harry would inevitably feel a sense of shared misfortune.

Of the "Big Three" in terms of deduction, the calmest was Hermione, who already knew the truth from Chu Yang. However, she was still worried for him, as Snape looked quite angry.

Chu Yang stood up calmly and replied, "Professor Snape, I don't know martial arts, but as you said, I grew up in an orphanage. The environment there wasn't ideal, and fighting was a survival skill every child had to learn."

"And, if I may say so, wizards without wands aren't much stronger than Muggles..."

Chu Yang's comparison between Muggles and wizards immediately infuriated Snape.

He strode forward quickly, stopping just short of pressing his face against Chu Yang's.

"You've made a grave mistake, Mr. Chu Yang!"

Snape glared fiercely at him, shouting, "Don't think that brute strength can solve everything. Maybe for now, but what about in two or three months? When those freshmen you bullied pick up their wands and learn spells, how will you defend yourself? With your fists?"

The confrontation between Snape and Chu Yang made the already cold dungeon feel even more oppressive. The new students watched the scene, terrified, barely daring to breathe.
