Shinobi Awakening : Rebirth

Chapter 11: Journey begins

Anko nodded. "Good. That's the attitude we like to see." She turned to us, her confidence as strong as the steel Hiroshi worked with. "This mission will go smoothly. Remember your training, stick together, and you'll be fine."

With those words of wisdom, we set off, the sun just beginning to peek over the horizon. I strutted ahead, my hoodie billowing out behind him like a cape, a clear indication of my overconfidence. "Easy peasy," I said, flashing a thumbs up. "How hard can a C-rank mission be?"

Yumi and Tetsu shared a look, both knowing that my bravado was a mask for my inexperience. But there was no time for doubt now. We had a mission to complete.

The journey was fraught with tension, the air thick with the possibility of danger lurking around every turn. But we pressed on, our eyes scanning the landscape for any signs of trouble. The chatter of birds and rustle of leaves seemed amplified in the silence of our anticipation. Yumi's medical pouches jingled softly with each step, a reminder of her readiness to heal. Tetsu's hand hovered over the hilt of his sword, his eyes scanning the horizon with the focus of a hawk. And I, despite my outward confidence, couldn't help but feel a knot in my stomach.

As we walked, Tetsu broke the silence, "I've been working on my Sharingan," he said, his voice barely above a murmur. "It's not as easy as I thought." His expression was a mix of determination and frustration, a reflection of the internal battle he faced.

Yumi glanced over at him, her emerald eyes filled with empathy. "How's it going?" she asked gently.

Tetsu shrugged, his hand momentarily leaving the hilt of his sword to run through his hair. "It's... slow," he admitted. "I can't seem to get the hang of it like my ancestors did."

Yumi nodded thoughtfully. "I know how you feel," she said, her voice soft but steady. "But I believe that we all have our unique strengths to offer. Maybe I won't ever be as fast as you, Tetsu, or as powerful as Ryo here," she added with a playful nudge to my side, "but I'm sure that someday, I'll unlock something special too."

Tetsu gave her a small smile, his eyes briefly meeting hers before looking away again. "Maybe," he murmured, his voice filled with doubt. "But it's just... I want to be as strong as them. For the team."

Ryo, sensing the tension, decided to lighten the mood. "Well, not everyone can have cool Uchiha powers, right?" he quipped, flashing a cheeky grin. "Some of us have to rely on our charm and good looks."

Anko chuckled, a twinkle in her eye. "Oh really, Ryo?" she said playfully. "So, you're saying you're the best-looking one here?"

My face flushed with embarrassment as Yumi and Tetsu burst into laughter. Even Hiroshi, the merchant we were escorting, couldn't hold back a chuckle. "What?" I sputtered, trying to maintain some semblance of dignity. "It's not like I was bragging or anything."

"Oh, come on," Anko said with a smirk, "you're the one who brought it up." She gave me a playful push. "But in all seriousness, Ryo, your charm and looks might get you out of a few jams, but it's your brains and your skills that will truly make you a formidable shinobi."

Her words lingered as we approached the massive river that blocked our path. It was a daunting sight, its waters rushing fiercely below us. Yumi, ever eager to prove herself, took a few steps back, her eyes gleaming with determination. "I can do this," she murmured under her breath. "I can jump it."

Without a moment's hesitation, she took a running start and leaped into the air, her body arcing gracefully over the chasm. For a brief, exhilarating second, it seemed like she might just make it. Then reality set in—her jump had been a tad too ambitious. Her body came up short, and she crashed into the outstretched limbs of a tree on the other side.

Yumi's eyes widened in surprise as she found herself suspended above the river, branches poking into her from every direction. She struggled to free herself, the fabric of her shirt and pants snagging on the rough bark. Her emerald eyes searched the tree, looking for a way to climb up. But with each movement, she only seemed to get more entangled.

Without missing a beat, I dashed forward, a glint of metal flashing in my hand. I threw a well-aimed Kunai, slicing through the thickest branch that held her captive. "Gotcha!" I called out, a smirk playing on my lips as I watched her plummet towards the river below.

The water's surface rippled as Yumi plunged into it, a splash echoing through the quiet woods. For a moment, she was lost from view, and my heart skipped a beat. But then she emerged, gasping for air and flailing her arms to stay afloat. The river's current tugged at her, but she managed to swim to the safety of the shore, her clothes clinging to her and her hair plastered against her face.

Tetsu couldn't hold it in any longer—his laughter bubbled up and over, and soon he was doubled over, tears streaming down his cheeks. It was the kind of laugh that made your stomach hurt, and it was infectious. Even Anko couldn't help but chuckle at the sight. Hiroshi, on the other hand, was less amused. He took a step back, his eyes wide, and muttered to himself, "I hope you kids can get me to my destination in one piece."

Yumi glared at us from across the riverbank, her emerald eyes flashing with a hint of annoyance. She knew we weren't laughing at her because she was in trouble—it was the absurdity of the situation that had cracked us up. Her usually pristine attire was soaked and clung to her like a second skin, and she looked like she'd just survived a particularly nasty battle rather than a simple misjudged jump.

But the moment passed quickly, and we realized we had to get moving again. The mission was still ahead of us, and we couldn't let a little water trip us up. That's when Tetsu, ever the show-off, decided to make a grand entrance. He took a step back, took a deep breath, and then did the unthinkable—he jumped straight onto the river's surface.

For a split second, the world seemed to freeze. Then, with a sound like a rock skipping across water, Tetsu bounced off the river's surface and landed with a graceful flourish on the opposite bank.

"Impressive, Uchiha," Anko murmured, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of her lips.

"You think that's impressive?" I quipped, trying to play it cool. "Watch this."
