Shinigami: Medicine Can't Save The Soul Reaper Society

Chapter 245: Chapter 246: Makoto's Great Compassion

From the very beginning, when Makoto proposed the idea of "medical loans," his intentions were twofold. On one hand, it was indeed motivated by the altruism of a healer—allowing noble families and Shinigami facing financial hardships to access proper medical treatment. On the other hand, it subtly served as a means to redistribute some of the wealth of Seireitei's aristocracy, bolstering the budget of the Fourth Division to better protect Seireitei and serve the entire Soul Society.

As for those who might default?

Makoto had no concerns about that. With his current connections to the Shihoin and Kuchiki clan, coupled with Unohana's formidable reputation, even the most arrogant nobles would think twice before failing to repay.

The situation with the Eleventh Division's medical bills, however, was entirely unexpected. Yet, it did spark some ideas in Makoto's mind.

The Eleventh Division… they had far too much free time.

Makoto was well aware that their division budget couldn't possibly cover the astronomical cost of over a hundred million kan in medical fees. If pressed, it would likely result in Zaraki and Ayasegawa resorting to outright denial or trickery.

Thus, the appearance of Ayasegawa at the Fourth Division's barracks was entirely within Makoto's expectations. He had even asked Isane to remind Ayasegawa when he arrived.

From there, there was no need for Makoto to consult Risa or Isane in advance. Simply following the natural course of events would suffice to lead Ayasegawa down the only path available.

This approach not only ensured that the Fourth Division's budget would be substantially supplemented for the next thirty years, but it also meant Makoto wouldn't be asked to perform large-scale treatments during that time.

Their previous bill hadn't even been settled yet, and they still had the audacity to ask for his help?

As for thirty years later, wouldn't a new crop of "cabbage ready for harvest" grow in the Eleventh Division?

When that time came, Makoto wouldn't mind offering a "friendly discount" for their medical needs, allowing Zaraki to indulge in another round of carnage within the Eleventh Division.

And thus, another cycle of "medical loans" would begin.

When Makoto bid farewell to Ayasegawa, who clutched his signed contract as though it were a lifeline, he didn't forget to offer a token of "goodwill": an annual full-body checkup for the entire Eleventh Division. This gesture left Ayasegawa deeply moved by Makoto's apparent generosity.

"Makoto… It's truly a blessing to have you in the Fourth Division…"

Although Ayasegawa didn't voice this thought, it lingered in his heart as he left.

Watching him depart, Isane, standing beside Makoto, couldn't help but voice her concern.

"Vice-Captain Senju, isn't offering annual free checkups for the entire Eleventh Division a bit… excessive?"

Excessive? Hardly.

Without checkups, how would they even realize they were ill? Those muscle-bound warriors often endured injuries and illnesses by sheer stubbornness. If they didn't receive timely treatment from the Fourth Division, what would become of them?

Makoto smirked inwardly but maintained his composed demeanor for Isane's sake, responding warmly,

"Isane, as the medical division, the Fourth Division shouldn't focus solely on profits or losses. Our priority is ensuring the health and well-being of all Shinigami."

After a pause, he sighed and added,

"If only we had more staff in the Fourth Division, I'd have implemented free health checkups across all of Seireitei to safeguard the health of every Shinigami."

For a moment, Isane was deeply moved. She had always regarded Makoto as the kindest and most compassionate individual in the Gotei 13, yet his words managed to touch her heart anew.

Perhaps… this was the unique kind of love that defined Vice-Captain Senju.

Because he was capable, he felt an innate responsibility to care for others as much as possible.

"Vice-Captain Senju, I'm certain your dream will come true one day," Isane said earnestly.

"I hope that day comes sooner rather than later."

Makoto gazed skyward, his expression brimming with hope, making him seem even more towering in stature.

"Isane, with the new Shin'o Academy graduation ceremony approaching, I want you to represent the Fourth Division in recruiting new members."

"Me?!" Isane was stunned, pointing to herself in disbelief. She never imagined Makoto would entrust her with such an important task.

"The Fourth Division is rarely the first choice for graduates. To better treat patients and serve Seireitei, I've decided to increase the salary and benefits of our division members to double that of other divisions."

Seeing Isane's concern, Makoto reassured her with a gentle smile,

"Don't worry. Even if I have to tighten my belt and Captain Unohana cuts back on her own expenses, we won't let our members suffer. I'll find a way to manage the budget."

Isane fell silent, deeply moved by Makoto's selflessness. She silently vowed to assist him in any way possible, offering her own efforts to support his vision of compassion.

Later that afternoon, after dealing with patient treatments and settling the Eleventh Division's accounts, Makoto set out to Rukongai to retrieve Rangiku Matsumoto and Hisagi Shuhei.

Previously, he had temporarily arranged for them to stay near Hisana's residence, as there were no suitable accommodations for them in Seireitei.

Now that Makoto held a noble title and his own estate, accommodating two people from Rukongai within Seireitei was perfectly within the rules.

Moreover, with Unohana facilitating the establishment of the Women's Shinigami Association, Makoto planned to host its headquarters in his noble estate.

Thus, Makoto intended for Rangiku and Shuhei to reside in his estate as well, both as companions and as unpaid helpers for tasks like cleaning.
