3: The Rabbit-Eared Girl
Loranhil sat in a room atop the City Lord’s mansion, reviewing records from the past half year and reports gathered from various cities.
After joining Cransia, the abundant surplus food accumulated by the rabbit-eared tribe had turned into wealth. Through recent trade, many rabbit-eared families had seen their incomes multiply several times over. They began to venture out of the forests and mountains, engaging in activities in the outside world and actively participating in the country’s development.
In her previous letters sent back, she had recorded her experiences working in the southern merchant associations, encouraging the rabbit-eared tribe to study diligently and seize the opportunities during the early stages of nation-building and market gaps.
Most of these high-ranking rabbit-eared tribe members had once been her students. After receiving Loranhil’s legacy jewel, they began to study earnestly. Recently, they had come up with several methods to attract investment, which made Loranhil feel somewhat gratified.
For instance, the [Green Tangerine Fruit] sold in Snake-Slaying City was one such method. These supernatural fruits, which were once rare, had been continuously cultivated for seven years. The tribe’s supernatural gardening experts had carefully tended to them, gradually increasing production. After training a batch of excellent warriors, there was even a surplus.
Realizing how precious these fruits were in the outside world, they had a spark of inspiration and came up with the idea of a Friendship Medal to attract investment. So far, it seemed to be working well. Downstairs, many wealthy merchants were lining up to process investment projects and sign orders, greatly pleasing the city’s managers who proudly reported this to Loranhil.
Seeing her former students now taking on important roles and coming up with their own innovative ideas, the young woman felt that her future pressure had greatly diminished.
Picking up her pen, she added some annotations on the side, noting areas that needed attention and could be improved.
In fact, many ideas came from her experience playing games in her previous life. For example, setting up reputation levels—the higher the level, the more rare items one could buy from the rabbit-eared tribe, along with additional benefits. These included tax exemptions for the first few years and the ability to hire some rabbit-eared tribe members to escort goods.
The logistics system in this world was still quite primitive, without even the ancient post station system. Only large merchant associations had branches in various places that could charge fees to help deliver letters and such.
Without the conditions of the information age, establishing a logistics network was unrealistic. However, imitating the ancient post station system was feasible to meet the needs of the middle and lower classes for sending letters and mailing items. The government could also greatly enhance communication with local areas, strengthen central control, and unite the country tightly under one banner.
Thinking of this, she wrote much more. Many things still needed to be discussed with Cransia. She made a mental note to send another letter to Pullman later, covering more matters this time.
The door creaked open, and a maid with white rabbit ears entered, carrying a tray with a teapot, teacups, and two plates of exquisite desserts.
“Greetings, Lady Loranhil,” she bowed slightly nervously, only raising her head after the young woman responded.
Looking at the silver-haired young woman writing seriously at the desk, she felt a surge of respect. She carefully placed the tray on the table and set out its contents.
After arranging everything, she took the tray and clasped her hands together on her apron, watching the young woman who was still writing. The sound of the pen scratching on paper filled the air. In the bright candlelight, that focused yet gentle face made anyone who saw it feel at ease.
“My lady, these will get cold if left for too long. Perhaps you could take a short break?” she said timidly, worried about disturbing the young woman.
“Alright, I understand.”
Loranhil looked up with a smile, then continued writing for a few more paragraphs before slowly putting down her pen.
Taking a cherry-topped cake, Loranhil took a small bite. The sweet cream and soft cake melted in her mouth, followed by the slightly tart sweetness of the cherry, which cut through the richness of the cream, bringing a refreshing sensation.
“Very nice. Did you make this?”
Loranhil examined the rabbit-eared girl, who stood nervously by the desk, her adorable ears drooping slightly. The fluffy white fur made one want to touch it.
“Thank you for your praise, my lady. Yes, I made it.”
She replied happily, though without raising her head. However, her two ears perked up and swayed slightly.
Hmm, I want to touch them. Loranhil looked at the ears but ultimately resisted the urge.
“No need to be so nervous. What’s your name?”
At this, the rabbit-eared girl finally raised her head, her red eyes looking at Loranhil as she answered.
“My name is Mira, my lady. I’m the child you saved in the village back then.”
Which one? After thinking carefully, Loranhil finally remembered the scene of the giant snake’s tail about to strike a mother and daughter as it moved through the village years ago.
“Oh, it’s you! How have you been these years?”
Seeing that Loranhil remembered, the rabbit-eared girl nodded excitedly.
“Yes, thanks to your protection and guidance, my mother and I are living very well now.” Her face showed a pure and happy smile.
Time flies, and the little child from back then has grown up, Loranhil thought to herself, looking at the cute rabbit-eared girl before her. She had missed quite a lot during her years of slumber.
“What work are you doing now? I remember there weren’t supposed to be professional maids in the city.”
“I’m currently a nun at the temple. When I heard you were coming today, I requested to serve as a maid as well.”
“A nun of the Angel Church? That’s not bad.” Loranhil nodded.
This world didn’t have widespread belief in any particular deity. The faith of the Angel Church was more akin to a form of worship and following.
Like following historical great figures and beliefs, angels had once descended upon this world. They were powerful, but not invincible, and they left behind the legacy of the Angel Sequence for this world.
During the Chaos Calamity of the Third Era, to monitor and purge the chaos phantoms in various places, major organizations across the continent had supported supernatural experts of the Angel Sequence to establish temples worldwide. These were used to supervise and search for those shadows from other realms, with healing the sick and injured being merely a side effect.
However, after the chaos vortex had been dormant for several hundred years, what was once a side job had become the main job. They now served as local hospitals of sorts.
They also often acted as notaries and guarantors with good reputations, maintaining neutrality for years.
Now, the headquarters of the Angel Church was in the Holy Domain Nation, where Angel Sequence supernatural experts were most concentrated. Rumors said that the church headquarters still had angelic remnants and maintained contact with the celestial realm.
Mira was now also a supernatural expert of the Angel Sequence. She had recently accompanied everyone to Western Wind, and in the final moment, it was she who had saved Team Leader Kanda.
