She Is Not a Witch

10: The Rabbit-Eared School

After sitting in the courtyard for a while, it was noon when the classroom doors finally opened. The students poured out all at once, rushing enthusiastically towards the cafeteria a hundred meters away, looking excited and happy.

After all the students had left, Mira walked out of the classroom. Seeing the familiar silhouette of a girl in a white hat and dress sitting in the courtyard, she realized it must be Loranhil and quietly approached to greet her.

“Mira has finished her class,” the girl turned around, revealing the same face she had seen two days ago.

“Yes, though it’s not really a class. The church and school are next to each other, so I often come over to help.”

Mira was quite curious why Her Highness had come today.

“You were in the first batch of students, right? I seem to remember teaching you back then,” Loranhil recalled.

“Yes, we were very fortunate to receive Your Highness’s personal instruction at that time.”

In fact, the first batch of students had the deepest feelings. They had personally experienced many changes, and the huge transformation before and after made them especially admire this lady.

“Were you the one who taught the children to recite those words earlier?” Loranhil was particularly concerned about this.

“Not necessarily me, because all the teachers in the tribe teach it,” Mira nodded, her ears also swaying.

“Eh!?”

“Why does everyone teach this?” It feels so embarrassing, the girl thought, even though she had said it herself.

“Isn’t this what you taught us back then? To remember the lessons of history, not to repeat past mistakes, so the differences between the past and present, and the reasons for change—Your Highness was very right about that at the time.”

“Uh…” Loranhil was at a loss for words.

“Well then, are there many classes today?”

“About the same as usual, just that with the cold weather now, most activities are indoors.”

Loranhil stood up and walked with Mira while chatting.

A few days ago, this rabbit-eared girl had been somewhat reserved, but today as she talked about her work at the church and school, she gradually became more talkative. Loranhil often nodded to show she was listening and would ask about some everyday life matters.

After the rabbit-eared tribe became prosperous, most of the tribe members gradually gathered in the city and built green stone brick houses, which were much better at keeping warm and blocking the wind than the previous mushroom houses.

“The children now are much happier than when I was young. Back then, magical beasts ran rampant, some humans would come to capture us, and transportation wasn’t convenient, so we didn’t dare go even slightly far places,” Mira recalled.

“Childhood playmates would often disappear while we were playing, and when we gathered again, if one or two didn’t come, everyone would tacitly not ask about it. Every time we saw a familiar face appear again, we would be especially happy in our hearts.”

“After Your Highness came, everything started to get better. Gradually, we could all eat our fill, and we could play in the mountains without being scolded by adults.”

“Don’t put me on such a high pedestal. I only provided some guidance. Every brick and tile in this city was built by your own hands,” Loranhil shook her head and expressed her own view.

Seeing this important person being so humble, Mira could only stop talking and bury her reverence in her heart. Additionally, Her Highness’s outfit today was very beautiful. Was it some new trend?

With a creak, the wooden door of the rest room was pushed open, and the two walked in. The room wasn’t large, with a fire burning in the fireplace. Occasionally, the sound of a few sparks popping could be heard.

The fireplace was built with granite blocks, with the gaps filled and connected by limestone. It felt particularly rough to the touch. On the small flat surface above the fireplace were a few cups, some wooden and some metal. One black wooden cup was still steaming.

Opposite the fireplace was a small table surrounded by three sofas. In winter, soft cushions were placed on the sofas, making them quite comfortable to sit on. They were probably stuffed with cotton.

Before Loranhil and Mira entered the room, a girl was already sitting on the sofa. She had black rabbit ears and was petite in stature, wearing black silk stockings and a dark blue top. She was leaning on the sofa, her head lowered and her body slightly rising and falling, seemingly asleep. The firelight shone on her calves and face, making her look very cute.

“It’s Elia. Looks like she didn’t sleep well again last night,” Mira said softly.

“Is she a student?” Loranhil thought, judging by her small stature that she must be quite young.

Mira smiled at this but was still careful not to laugh out loud.

“No, actually she’s a teacher at the school, a year older than me.”

“You really can’t tell.”

Mira let Loranhil sit down, then went to shake her friend sitting on the sofa.

“Wake up, Elia~” The black-eared rabbit girl’s body swayed, but she still didn’t want to wake up.

“No, Mira, don’t shake me, let me sleep a bit…” Her eyes remained closed.

“Her Highness Loranhil is here,” Mira whispered in her ear.

The black ears suddenly perked up, and her eyes opened, revealing red pupils.

“Where, where?” Then she saw Loranhil sitting opposite her in silver hair and a white dress.

“Ah, Your Highness, I’m sorry, I was just resting a bit.” Her voice got smaller and smaller.

“It’s alright. Is there too much work, making you sleep so late?” Loranhil asked with concern, wondering if she should add more teachers.

“No, no, everyone has enough work, and we have plenty of staff. Mira often comes to help too.” She shook her head quickly, her large eyes looking at Loranhil, filled with stars of admiration.

“Elia, you didn’t eat well at noon again.” Mira picked up the cup on the fireplace and looked inside. It was full of oatmeal, which had already become quite swollen.

“This, because I like to eat this,” Elia wanted to maintain her image in front of Loranhil.

Mira glanced at her friend, knowing that she must have stayed up late reading those prince and princess love stories, which was why she hadn’t slept well and didn’t go to the cafeteria at noon, instead taking a nap here during lunchtime.

However, with Her Highness Loranhil present, she didn’t want to expose her friend, just giving her a slight look.

Elia didn’t mind this matter. Seeing Loranhil sitting there, she wanted to go over and talk but was a bit afraid. She tapped her two fingers together and only dared to speak after a while.

“Is Your Highness here today to check on the little ones’ learning progress?”

“This… not really.” Thinking that saying so would put a lot of pressure on the school’s teachers, Loranhil denied this guess.

“I actually came to bring some things, just as holiday gifts.”

After speaking, the girl lightly clapped her hands, and a large bag appeared on the reddish-brown wooden table. The bag rolled slightly, making a subtle clinking sound from inside. She untied the ribbon on the bag, revealing it to be full of candies, each wrapped in paper with colorful ribbon bows, very pretty.

She took out a few and handed them to the two rabbit-eared girls. Seeing their happy expressions after eating them, Loranhil smiled with satisfaction.

Maybe I should become a full-time candy witch in the future, she thought. It seems quite interesting.
