Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Furuya
"Hello, I'm Ryoukai!"
"Uchiha Qingming."
Looking at the lively Ryoukai in front of him, Qingming responded succinctly.
After exchanging names, he turned to the other person.
Mizutani Shizuko, feeling a bit shy under his gaze, shrank back and said in a barely audible voice, "I'm Mizutani Shizuko."
Once the three introduced themselves, they sat together at Ryoukai's insistence.
For the rest of the time, it was mostly Ryoukai talking, with Shizuko responding occasionally, while Qingming remained mostly silent.
From their conversation, Qingming learned that Ryoukai's parents were both Chuunin and skilled in technical fields—one worked in code decryption, and the other was a ninja in the barrier unit.
However, Qingming found it puzzling how such parents could produce a chatterbox like Ryoukai.
Was he pent-up at home?
Just as Qingming was musing over this, Ryoukai suddenly interrupted his thoughts.
"Hey, Qingming, what about your parents?"
"They sacrificed themselves."
Qingming replied calmly.
Ryoukai paused for a moment, looking slightly taken aback, then scratched his head awkwardly and said, "Um… I'm sorry, Qingming, I didn't know."
"It's fine. It's all in the past."
Qingming answered again, still in a tranquil tone.
Even so, Ryoukai felt embarrassed and fell silent.
Mizutani Shizuko seemed to want to say something but gathered her courage multiple times, ultimately not managing to speak.
Noticing this, Qingming didn't push her to talk.
He figured any comforting words she might offer were probably unnecessary for him.
Time passed, minute by minute.
About half an hour later.
Over a dozen Jonin arrived at the classroom.
Well, not all of them were true Jonin; most were Special Jonin.
Special Jonin are ninjas whose skills don't quite reach the Jonin level but possess unique talents in certain areas.
Given that most students in their year had clear limitations on their potential, it wasn't worth wasting too many Jonin's resources on them.
In wartime, as the backbone of the village, the strength of the Jonin was always in high demand. While training backup forces was crucial, it paled in comparison to the urgency of frontline battles.
"Eleventh class, stand up."
A Special Jonin at the podium said.
Immediately, the three named Nakajima Souta, Hanakanoko, and Hiran stood up.
After confirming everything was in order, the Special Jonin led them out of the classroom.
Next were the twelfth and thirteenth classes...
Before long, it was time for Qingming's group, the seventeenth class.
"Uchiha Qingming? Mizutani Shizuko? Ryoukai?"
A middle-aged ninja with a scar on his face looked at the three of them.
"That's us, Sensei!"
The middle-aged ninja flipped through the file in his hand, nodded, and said, "Good, follow me."
With that, he left the classroom.
Qingming and the others followed suit.
After about ten minutes, they arrived at the tenth training ground.
This place was somewhat isolated; typically, it took half an hour to get here from the center of the village, but they managed it in half the time today.
As a result, other than Qingming, both Ryoukai and Mizutani Shizuko were exhausted.
Especially Shizuko, who, being a girl with naturally weaker stamina, found it quite challenging to run here in such a short time.
Nevertheless, Qingming didn't offer to help, as he wasn't sure if it was part of the test from the Jonin ahead.
From his observations, Shizuko was likely able to persevere, so he let things play out.
"Alright, we stop here."
Upon reaching the center of the training ground, the middle-aged Jonin finally halted.
At that, Qingming and the others stopped as well.
The middle-aged Jonin's gaze swept over the three of them, pausing a bit longer on Qingming, before saying, "You managed to keep up with my pace; that's a preliminary pass for the test."
"Test?"
Mizutani Shizuko asked, panting heavily.
"Yes, a test."
The Jonin nodded, "On the battlefield, regardless of your type of ninja, if your physical fitness is lacking, you're among the most likely to fall victim."
Hearing this, Shizuko was taken aback, her face gradually turning pale.
She hadn't expected to hear such a serious topic about sacrifice on her first day as a ninja.
Thinking about sacrifices, she glanced at Qingming, wondering, "I wonder how Qingming feels about his parents' sacrifices. It must be hard for him!"
Qingming noticed her subtle actions but didn't say anything.
The middle-aged ninja moved past this topic and continued, "Alright, you can rest for a moment."
At his words, Ryoukai and Shizuko promptly sat down on the ground to catch their breath, while Qingming stood still, not moving an inch.
This level of exercise was nothing significant for him.
The middle-aged Jonin glanced at Qingming but said nothing, only stating, "While you rest, let's take a moment to get to know each other."
"Sure, Sensei, but we still don't know your name!" Ryoukai immediately chimed in.
The Jonin nodded and introduced himself: "I'm Furukawa. As you can see, I'm a Jonin, thirty-seven years old, I enjoy playing shogi, and I dislike those who don't follow the rules."
With that, he looked at Ryoukai and said, "You go first. Introduce yourself with your name, age, likes, dislikes, and your aspirations."
"Yes, Furukawa-sensei."
After replying, Ryoukai introduced himself: "I'm Ryoukai, ten years old, I like making friends, I dislike any food containing cilantro, and my dream is to become Hokage."
"Hokage? Another one brainwashed by the Will of Fire." Qingming silently sighed to himself.
Furukawa showed no expression, nodding before turning his gaze to Mizutani Shizuko. "What about you?"
After resting for a bit, Shizuko finally managed to catch her breath.
She looked around at the four present and, mustering her courage, said, "My name is Mizutani Shizuko, I'll be ten after the new year. I like flower arranging, and I don't really dislike anything in particular. As for my dream—"
She glanced around nervously, gathering her courage. "I want to become a medical ninja like Lady Tsunade."
"Tsunade?" Qingming thought to himself, "Her reputation is indeed great; it's no wonder she can become the Fifth Hokage even after being away from the village for so long."
Just as he was contemplating this, Furukawa turned his attention to him. "It's your turn, Qingming."
"Mm."
Qingming nodded and said, "My name is Uchiha Qingming, ten years old, I like training, I dislike trouble, and for my aspirations—"
At this point, Qingming suddenly paused.
There was no particular reason; he realized he had never truly considered long-term goals, let alone any aspirations.
When he first crossed over, he worried about his identity as an outsider being exposed, so he trained hard.
Once he absorbed all the experiences and memories of his predecessor, he was mainly concerned with surviving in the midst of the ongoing Ninja World War, so he continued to train diligently.
The furthest he had considered was how to survive the clan's massacre; thoughts of the future had rarely crossed his mind.
"Qingming-kun?"
Noticing Qingming had suddenly fallen silent, Mizutani Shizuko gently poked his arm, softly calling, "What's wrong?"
