Chapter 19: The Hunt Begins
The morning sun pierced through the thick canopy of the forest, casting fragmented beams of light onto Kilua and Alluka as they continued their journey. Kilua's mind was heavy with the weight of Hisoka's warning. He knew the magician didn't speak lightly, especially when it came to challenges.
"Alluka," Kilua said, breaking the silence. "We need to move faster. We can't stay in one place too long."
Alluka nodded, though she glanced at her brother with concern. "Kilua, are you okay? You seem... distracted."
"I'm fine," he lied. "I just need to figure out our next move."
Kilua's senses stayed sharp, his eyes scanning the forest for any signs of pursuit. The previous night's encounter had shown him that their enemies were relentless—and well-organized. Whoever they were, they wouldn't stop until they had Alluka.
As they pressed on, a strange sound caught Kilua's attention. It was faint, almost imperceptible, but his trained ears picked up on it immediately. It was the rhythmic rustling of leaves, accompanied by soft footsteps.
They were being followed.
Kilua motioned for Alluka to stop, pulling her behind a large tree. "Stay here and don't move," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
"But Kilua—"
"Trust me," he said, giving her a reassuring look.
Alluka hesitated but nodded, clutching the tree trunk tightly.
Kilua moved silently through the underbrush, his footsteps as quiet as a shadow. He circled around, his senses zeroing in on the source of the noise.
A figure emerged in his line of sight. It was one of the masked men from the previous night, his posture tense as he scanned the area. Kilua's eyes narrowed. This was no ordinary tracker—his movements were precise, methodical.
Without hesitation, Kilua sprang into action. In a blur of motion, he closed the distance, his hand crackling with electricity as he aimed a decisive blow at the man's back.
The attacker spun around at the last second, narrowly dodging the strike. "You're fast," he said, his voice muffled by the mask. "But not fast enough."
The man lunged at Kilua, wielding twin daggers with deadly precision. Kilua dodged and countered, his assassin training kicking in. The fight was a whirlwind of speed and skill, each combatant testing the other's limits.
Kilua's sharp reflexes gave him the upper hand. With a well-placed strike, he disarmed the man, sending one of the daggers flying into the underbrush.
"Who sent you?" Kilua demanded, his voice cold and commanding.
The man didn't answer. Instead, he pulled out a small device from his pocket—a signal flare.
Kilua's eyes widened. "No, you don't!"
He lunged at the man, but it was too late. The flare shot into the sky, its bright red light visible even through the dense canopy.
Kilua cursed under his breath. The flare was a beacon, summoning reinforcements.
The man smirked behind his mask. "You can't run forever, Zoldyck."
Kilua didn't waste time with a response. He knocked the man out with a quick strike to the neck, then turned and sprinted back to Alluka.
"Alluka, we have to go!" he said urgently, grabbing her hand.
"What happened?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"They know where we are," Kilua said, his tone grim. "We have to stay ahead of them."
The siblings broke into a run, weaving through the forest at a breakneck pace. Kilua's mind raced as he calculated their options. The enemies were closing in, and the forest was no longer safe.
After several minutes of running, they stumbled upon a rocky ravine. Kilua stopped, scanning the terrain. The ravine was steep, but it offered a potential escape route.
"We're going down," Kilua said, helping Alluka climb onto his back.
"Are you sure?" Alluka asked, her voice laced with fear.
Kilua gave her a reassuring nod. "Trust me. I won't let anything happen to you."
With that, he began the descent, his movements swift but cautious. The rocks were loose and slippery, but Kilua's agility allowed him to navigate the terrain with ease.
Halfway down, the sound of voices reached his ears. The attackers were close, their shouts echoing through the forest.
Kilua quickened his pace, his heart pounding. They were running out of time.
As they reached the bottom of the ravine, Kilua spotted a narrow cave hidden among the rocks. It wasn't much, but it would provide temporary cover.
"In here," he said, guiding Alluka inside.
The cave was dark and damp, its walls covered in moss. Kilua crouched near the entrance, his body tense as he listened for any signs of pursuit.
Alluka sat beside him, her small hand clutching his sleeve. "Kilua, what do we do now?"
He took a deep breath, forcing himself to stay calm. "We wait. And if they find us, we fight."
Alluka's eyes filled with fear, but she nodded. She trusted Kilua completely, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
Outside, the shouts grew louder, the shadows of their pursuers moving closer. Kilua's grip tightened on his weapon, his resolve unshakable.
No matter what, he would protect Alluka. Even if it meant facing an army.
