Shadow of the Hunt

Chapter 15: The Lightning’s Resolve

The chimera beast lunged forward, its massive claws tearing through the dense forest. Kilua barely avoided its swipe, the sheer force of the attack splintering a nearby tree. His side burned where the beast's earlier strike had grazed him, but he couldn't afford to slow down.

Kilua's mind raced, his thoughts a whirlwind of strategies. He couldn't defeat this creature through brute force alone; its size and power were overwhelming. He needed precision—an opening he could exploit.

"Alluka, stay hidden!" Kilua shouted, glancing back at his sister, who crouched beneath the cover of thick roots. Her eyes shimmered with worry, but she nodded, trusting him.

Illumi, meanwhile, watched from a distance, his expression unreadable. "You're wasting time, Kilua," he said, his voice carrying over the chaos. "That thing isn't going to stop until one of you is dead."

"Then help, or shut up!" Kilua shot back, his frustration boiling over.

But Illumi didn't move. "This is your fight. Show me what you've learned."

Kilua growled under his breath, his hands sparking with electricity as he refocused on the beast. The creature let out another deafening roar, its red eyes locked on him. It charged again, its massive body crashing through the underbrush.

This time, Kilua didn't dodge. Instead, he rushed toward the beast, his aura flaring as he unleashed a powerful thunderbolt. The lightning struck the creature's chest, sending it reeling back with a pained roar.

For a moment, Kilua thought he had gained the upper hand. But the chimera beast recovered quickly, shaking off the attack as if it were nothing.

Kilua cursed under his breath. "It's too tough… I need to hit it where it's vulnerable."

The beast charged again, but this time Kilua was ready. He sidestepped its attack, using its momentum to leap onto its back. His hands crackled with electricity as he drove them into the creature's neck, aiming for its nerves.

The beast thrashed violently, trying to shake him off. Kilua held on tight, his jaw clenched as he poured more energy into the attack. The smell of burning fur filled the air, and the creature's roars grew more frantic.

But then, with a sudden burst of strength, the chimera beast bucked him off. Kilua hit the ground hard, the impact knocking the wind out of him. He groaned, struggling to push himself up as the beast turned to face him once more.

From the shadows, Illumi's voice rang out again. "Still hesitating, Kilua? You're holding back."

"I'm not holding back!" Kilua snapped, his voice raw with frustration.

"Yes, you are," Illumi replied coldly. "You're afraid of what will happen if you let go. But fear will only get you killed."

Kilua's fists clenched, his mind flashing back to all the times his family had tried to mold him into a perfect assassin. He had spent his whole life fighting against their control, refusing to become the cold, unfeeling weapon they wanted him to be.

But now, standing on the edge of life and death, he realized something. He didn't have to choose between being a killer and being himself. He could fight for what mattered—to protect Alluka, no matter the cost.

His gaze hardened as he pushed himself to his feet, his aura sparking with renewed intensity. The chimera beast roared, preparing to strike again.

Kilua took a deep breath, centering himself. Then, with a burst of speed, he darted forward, his movements faster than the eye could follow. He dodged the beast's claws, weaving through its attacks with precision.

Finally, he saw his opening. The beast's chest was exposed, its heart visible beneath the thick layers of muscle.

Kilua focused all his energy into his hands, his electricity crackling like a storm. He leapt into the air, his voice ringing out as he unleashed his most powerful attack.

"Thunderbolt Strike!"

The lightning erupted from his hands, a blinding surge of energy that pierced through the beast's chest. The creature let out a final, ear-splitting roar before collapsing to the ground, its massive body shaking the earth.

Kilua landed lightly, his breathing heavy as he watched the beast's form go still. He felt a pang of guilt for taking its life, but he quickly pushed the thought aside. There was no room for hesitation—not when Alluka's life was on the line.

From the shadows, Illumi stepped forward, his expression unreadable. "You've grown stronger," he said, his tone almost approving. "But strength alone won't be enough to protect her."

Kilua glared at him, his fists still crackling with residual energy. "Stay away from us, Illumi. This is the last time I'm warning you."

Illumi's eyes narrowed, but he didn't respond. Instead, he turned and walked away, his figure disappearing into the darkness.

Kilua let out a shaky breath, turning back to Alluka. She ran to him, wrapping her arms around his waist.

"You did it," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Kilua placed a hand on her head, his gaze softening. "Yeah… but it's not over yet. We need to keep moving."

As the forest fell silent once more, Kilua couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
