Chapter 6 - Commotion
I felt like I had done something truly incredible.
I had only acted as my instincts guided me, yet I summoned dark clouds and struck down lightning.
What is this?
It’s beyond comprehension. At this rate, aren’t I just a walking natural disaster?
That mutant, he’s not dead, is he?
I approached the minotaur and placed my hand on his nose.
Thankfully, he was still alive.
His skin had turned black from the lightning, but I could see it gradually regenerating.
What incredible toughness. Worried he might get up again, I checked his condition more thoroughly, but he was definitely unconscious. It would take quite some time for him to regain consciousness.
But this… how should I handle this? I received the NIS agent’s contact information before. If I call and ask them to clean this up, will they do it?
Anyway, let’s clear away these dark clouds first and think about it.
I waved my hand. The dark clouds that had filled the sky instantly dissipated.
…It really felt like I had become some kind of god.
I lightly touched my head. My hat seemed to have blown away due to the wind that had whirled around me when I summoned the lightning.
Looking around, I could see my hat had fallen in front of Lee Sihyun.
Now that the situation was more or less resolved, I picked up the hat that had fallen in front of her, dusted it off, and said:
“The situation is over now, so you can go home.”
“Ah, yes, yes. Thank you.”
“Then I should go too. My sister is waiting for me.”
“Um, I’d like to repay you somehow…”
“Repay? No need. It’s fine.”
“But still.”
“I said it’s fine. I told you, right? This was to change the perception of mutants. If I accept compensation, wouldn’t that defeat the purpose?”
“Th-then could I at least know your name?”
“Well… Seohyun. Yoon Seohyun.”
After saying her name, Seohyun disappeared just like that. Like a mirage.
It seemed she left so abruptly because she noticed the surrounding gazes. Perhaps she didn’t want to become a spectacle.
Sihyun couldn’t help but think that.
Most of the people who had been fleeing were now staring at this direction with wide eyes.
Watching the scene, Sihyun felt like she had been in a dream.
“Wow…”
What burst forth was admiration.
Her eyes were filled with emotion at the sight of the mutant who looked like she could be from a superhero movie.
Despite nearly dying, that didn’t matter now.
She was alive, and that was enough.
That’s what she thought.
“Will I be able to meet her again? Wait. Yoon Seohyun…? That name sounds familiar…”
She muttered with vague hope, but at that time, she didn’t know.
That she would meet Seohyun sooner than she expected.
Before contacting my sister, I called the NIS agent using my smartphone.
“Yes. This is Choi Jeongho.”
“Ah, hello, Agent. This is the mutant Yoon Seohyun.”
“Hello, Seohyun. What can I do for you? I apologize, but I’m in a bit of an urgent situation, so I can’t talk for long.”
“I’ve subdued a Minotaur-type mutant, so I’m calling you. I think the urgent situation you’re in might be related to that person.”
“…What?”
“At Exit 2 of Hanguk University Station, if you go straight ahead to the busy area, there’s a cafe called Hanbit Cafe. He should be lying in front of that cafe.”
“W-wait. You subdued him? The Minotaur-type mutant?”
“Yes. I’ve already left the scene… but he probably won’t be able to move for a while. He was struck directly by lightning. He’s definitely unconscious, so you can just go and restrain him.”
“Lightning? What do you mean by lightning?”
“Well, that’s… my ability.”
“Hmm. I understand. I’ll go check right away.”
The call ended, and not long after, my smartphone rang. As expected, it was Agent Choi Jeongho. It seems he was closer than I thought.
“I’ve confirmed it. But why did you step into something that could have been dangerous?”
“I thought if mutants like that rampage, people might become terrified just at the sight of mutants later. I thought we might not even be able to walk freely on the streets… so I stepped in.”
“Thank you for your help. You’ve done a great service.”
“Um, by the way.”
“Yes. Is there something you need?”
“No, it’s not that… When I slammed that person down, the asphalt got a bit damaged. I won’t be charged for damages, right?”
“Haha! Don’t worry about that. What damages? On the contrary, you’ll receive a reward. This guy is on the wanted list.”
“Oh.”
“I’ll deposit the reward to your account if you give me your account number. He’s caused quite a few accidents, so the reward is quite substantial.”
“Aren’t there usually more complex procedures for this?”
“Despite appearances, I’m the person overseeing matters related to mutants. I can bypass most procedures.”
“Oh…”
“Anyway, thank you again. That guy was in quite a frenzied state, and if something had gone wrong, whether agent or civilian, someone could have been seriously injured. Thanks to you, Seohyun, the incident was resolved safely.”
“Ah, yes.”
I hit the jackpot.
People really should do good deeds.
After exchanging a few more words, I ended the call and called my sister.
“It’s over.”
“Hey! Are you hurt anywhere!?”
“No, no. I turned out to be stronger than I imagined.”
“Hmm… Alright.”
“Where are you?”
“I’m waiting where we parted earlier.”
“I’ll be there soon. I’m hungry after exerting myself. Let’s go home quickly and eat something.”
“…Then I’ll just order in advance.”
“Oh. That works for me.”
My sister seemed dumbfounded… or is that just my imagination?
[Oh shit;; I saw something crazy.]
Remember that Minotaur-type mutant bastard who got caught causing a disturbance before?
He escaped today and was destroying everything around the busy area near Hanguk University Station
Suddenly some woman appeared and instantly knocked him down;;
But that wasn’t the end
The guy who got slammed into the ground had good endurance and got up again, but suddenly dark clouds formed and lightning struck him directly
He instantly became charcoal wtf;;
Anyway, from a distance, the woman seemed to have some kind of horns, that’s where the lightning started
Remember that person on the community who claimed to be a High Elf, whether it was a lie or whatever, and spread rumors about a dragon-type mutant?
That doesn’t seem to be a rumor;;
I think the woman who fried the minotaur might be a dragon-type mutant
-? Don’t lie
-No;; it’s true;; A ton of people saw it besides me, it should be in the news soon?
-Wow is this for real?
-Holy shit lol a dragon-type mutant really exists?
-Is there no video? Or at least a picture
-You idiot, who would think to record video when a minotaur is rampaging? And after the lightning struck, there was a temporary power outage in the area;;
-Whoa;;
-So is she pretty?
-I was too far to see clearly;; She was just all in black
“…I didn’t expect it would turn out like this.”
“Why, what is it?”
While eating pizza with my sister and looking at my smartphone, I saw my story in the breaking news section.
Roughly, a Minotaur-type mutant was causing a disturbance at Hanguk University Station, and a mutant had subdued him.
The said mutant artificially dropped lightning… an article along those lines.
“I think I made the news?”
“What!?”
“Look. There are articles all over the place.”
“Wait. What is this? Artificially dropped lightning? Is this real!?”
“Yes. I could also summon dark clouds.”
“Hmm. What are you, some kind of god?”
“Because I’m a dragon. I think it might be a dragon species characteristic? I told you, right? I’m the last mutant in the world to complete mutation.”
“No, even if that’s the case… It’s really hard to believe, you know.”
“How do you think I feel? Even I was bewildered after doing it.”
“I guess you really are a mutant then.”
I can understand my sister’s reaction.
Even I would be quite shocked if my sister suddenly became a dragon and started dropping lightning.
But well, it’s a problem that can be solved as long as I don’t do anything strange.
No matter that I became a dragon, my human nature as Yoon Seohyun with petty bourgeois instincts remained the same.
The sense of disconnect my family feels will gradually dissipate over time.
…Come to think of it, something I’ve noticed since waking up is that my thought process seems to have become a bit bolder. Normally, I would have been unable to sleep due to various worries.
Despite putting up a facade, my timid nature doesn’t just disappear.
If my thought process had remained the same as before, I would have worried about the gaze and exclusion towards mutants but wouldn’t have taken direct action.
The fact that I confidently went to catch the minotaur can only be attributed to the influence of the mutation.
Anyway… it seemed like not only had my body become physically stronger through mutation, but my mind had also grown stronger.
Let’s consider this a good thing.
Current time: 9 AM.
I opened my eyes with a start.
The officetel where I was staying with my sister was surprisingly comfortable.
For convenience, I call it an apartment, but it’s more like a proper home.
…It seems my parents went to quite some lengths.
Well, it’s not incomprehensible why they did so.
Both my sister and I are the type of people who are confident in our ability to study diligently.
The name Hanguk University is the most prestigious university in Korea. Of course, excluding dentistry and medical schools.
But what should I do now?
There was nothing to do.
A part-time job? What madman would employ a mutant?
Study? I already know all the necessary introductory courses. I’m not a third-year for nothing.
In other words, I have no problem keeping up with the classes.
Therefore… there isn’t much for me to do.
Just, wasting time.
I got up, scratching my belly, and washed some rice. My sister was obviously sprawled out and sleeping, so I might as well prepare breakfast.
I washed about four servings of rice, enough for my sister and me to eat until dinner, and took out some eggs.
Kimchi, eggs, and bacon would make a luxurious spread.
As soon as I finished the meal, I went to the bathroom.
A dragon’s body is blessed, so physical cleanliness is maintained without separate washing, but still, there’s the matter of feeling fresh.
Although drying my hair is a hassle, the freshness that comes after washing is worth enduring the hassle.
“Yaaaawn… Did you wash up?”
“Yeah. I’ve prepared breakfast, so just heat it up in the microwave.”
“Oh… Thanks.”
After I finished washing up and drying my hair, my sister came out of her room with a yawn.
