Second Shot at Life

Chapter 11: School Days and Awkward Crushes

Jay woke up in his dreamland and, of course, as he guessed, after checking the date and time, he found it was a different year. He confirmed that each time he slept in the present time, it would send him back to a different year. Now it was morning, and after eating breakfast, he was getting ready for school. He was now in the 6th grade.

As he started riding his bike towards school, his mind was filled with thoughts. He decided to ask the System about his next challenge.

Jay: "System, when will I get a challenge again?"

The System's response was both mysterious and provoking.

System (smirking): "What do you need the most right now, Jay?"

Jay was confused and gave it a lot of thought as he continued his journey to school. He still hadn't figured out what he needed by the time he reached school. Jay sat on his bench, lost in thought. Throughout the classes till lunch, he kept thinking and figured that time would tell.

During lunch, his mind wandered to how he could get closer to Riya, his crush. He decided to ask Aman for advice on how to ask out a girl. They were just ten-year-old kids, so the advice wasn't that great, and Jay soon realized that he had barked up the wrong tree.

Aman: "Just, you know, be cool and maybe give her a flower or something?"

Jay sighed, knowing this wasn't going to be easy.

Jay: "I need more advice, bro. Please, help me out here."

Aman, ever the enthusiastic friend, decided to bring in reinforcements. He brought two of their friends, Varun and Raj, to give their pointers.

Varun: "I think you should just walk up to her and say, 'Hey, you're pretty cool. Wanna hang out?'"

Raj: "Nah, you should do something impressive, like win a game or something, and then ask her out. Girls love winners."

Jay couldn't help but feel more confused by their varying advice.

Jay (thinking): "This isn't helping at all."

After school, the bell rang, and it was time to go back home. On his way back, he decided to stop by a bookshop, thinking that maybe he could find some books on love. The System, as usual, made fun of him each time he received advice from his friends and was eagerly waiting to see what would happen in the bookshop.

Jay reached a decent-sized bookshop and started browsing books on how to impress a girl. There were many books with cringe-worthy names like "The Art of Wooing," "101 Ways to Win Her Heart," and "Cupid's Secrets."

The System laughed at the names of the books, making Jay feel embarrassed.

System (laughing): "Really, Jay? 'Cupid's Secrets'? That's just gold."

Despite the embarrassment, Jay bought one book with his pocket money, the one that sounded the least cringe-worthy. He reached home and went straight to his room. His sister wanted to play with him, but he told her he was tired and busy.

Jay started reading the book and questioned everything about the ways that were suggested. It was too cringe and awkward to apply in real life. The System laughed a lot with Jay as they went through the book together.

System (giggling): "Oh, Jay, this is rich. 'Whisper sweet nothings'? Seriously?"

After finishing the book, Jay was more confused and didn't know what to do. He remembered one thing that his friend Aman told him: making your girl laugh is the key, and just be yourself.

The next day at school, Jay gathered all his courage and approached Riya during lunch break. He decided to tell her a simple joke to break the ice.

Jay: "Hey, Riya! Do you want to hear a joke?"

Riya looked up, curious.

Riya: "Sure, Jay. What's the joke?"

Jay took a deep breath and went for it.

Jay: "Why did the scarecrow win an award?"

Riya raised an eyebrow.

Riya: "I don't know, why?"

Jay grinned.

Jay: "Because he was outstanding in his field!"

Riya giggled, and Jay felt a surge of confidence.

Riya: "That's a good one, Jay!"

Feeling encouraged, Jay decided to take the plunge.

Jay: "So, um, Riya, I was wondering... would you like to go to the park with me this weekend? We could hang out and have some fun."

Riya seemed taken aback for a moment, then she smiled.

Riya: "Sure, Jay. That sounds nice."

Jay's heart soared. He had done it! He had asked Riya out, and she had said yes. However, his victory was short-lived as he realized how nervous he felt about the upcoming 'date.'

As the school day ended and Jay rode his bike home, he couldn't help but replay the conversation with Riya in his mind. He was both excited and terrified. The System, never missing an opportunity, chimed in.

System (teasing): "Well, look at you, Romeo. Got yourself a date, huh?"

Jay sighed, feeling the pressure.

Jay: "Yeah, now I just have to make sure it goes well."

The System smirked.

System: "Good luck with that. I'll be watching."

That night, as Jay lay in bed, he felt a mix of excitement and anticipation. The day had been filled with unexpected success and new beginnings, and he couldn't wait to see what the dreamland had in store for him next. As he drifted off to sleep, he felt a sense of purpose and hope.

Suddenly, a panel popped up in front of Jay, startling him. It was his next challenge.

Panel: "Next Challenge: Successfully impress Riya on your park 'date'. You have one chance. Failure is not an option."

Jay stared at the panel, feeling both excited and nervous. The stakes were higher than ever, and he knew he had to make this work.

Jay (determined): "Alright, System. Challenge accepted."

The System's voice echoed in his mind.

System: "Good luck, Jay. You'll need it."
