Chapter 16: The Results of Chaos
Leonard slowly rose from his office chair, his mind still foggy from exhaustion. After a sleepless night spent handling emergency reports and coordinating operations related to the recent crises in Strasbourg, he felt drained. Stress and tension had overwhelmed him, leaving a deep weariness. To clear his mind, he decided to go to his room and turn on the television. This simple yet familiar act provided a moment of respite in a busy day.
Entering his room, he pressed the power button on the TV, and the screen lit up with a slight crackle. The news channels were lively, broadcasting images and live reports of the catastrophic events shaking Strasbourg. The images scrolling across the screen were striking: buildings in flames, scattered debris, and civilians in panic desperately seeking refuge. The reports were accompanied by comments from journalists, who struggled to maintain a semblance of calm while providing regular updates.
The news anchor, looking grave, made an important announcement. Leonard adjusted the volume and listened intently. The palpable anxiety in the anchor's voice left little room for hope.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we regret to inform you that the recent attacks in Strasbourg have been classified as terrorist attacks using biological weapons. The situation is critical, and extraordinary measures have been implemented to ensure everyone's safety. The President of the Republic will make an important statement shortly. We ask you to stay tuned and follow the authorities' instructions. We will provide additional information as soon as possible."
Leonard felt a lump form in his stomach. The consequences of these events far exceeded what he had imagined. The need to fully understand the situation drove him to listen to the presidential address. He knew that the decisions made by the government would have a direct impact on the SCP Foundation's operations.
Finally, the President appeared on the screen. His usually calm and composed face was marked by an unusual gravity. He stood behind a podium adorned with the Republic's seal, and his speech was imbued with solemnity.
"Dear citizens, I address you today to offer assurances in these troubled times. The recent events in Strasbourg have been classified as terrorist attacks using biological weapons. In response, we have enacted martial law to ensure public safety and closed our borders to prevent the spread of this threat. Furthermore, certain public services, including schools, colleges, and universities, will be temporarily closed. We are working closely with security forces to control the situation and prevent any escalation. We will keep you informed of any significant developments. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation."
The speech was clear and straightforward. Leonard could feel the weight of the measures taken. Martial law and border closures were clear signs of the situation's severity. The temporary closure of educational institutions indicated that the crisis was affecting many aspects of daily life. Leonard knew these measures would also impact the Foundation's operations, which now had to intensify efforts to manage anomalies and protect the public.

Shortly thereafter, he received a direct communication from O5-4, requesting a meeting to discuss the next steps:
- [ Ding! Incoming communication from O5-4 ]
[ O5-4: Hello Administrator, I would like to discuss the next actions and strategies to adopt. I invite you to meet us in person at Site-17. However, I understand that this may pose problems. If so, we could meet elsewhere, according to what suits you best. Please let me know what works for you. ]
Leonard read the message with some apprehension. The request to meet at Site-17 was logical, but due to his personal situation, traveling was difficult for him. He grabbed his mic and decided to respond honestly:
- [ Administrator: Hello O5-4, thank you for the invitation. Unfortunately, it is difficult for me to travel to Site-17 due to my personal situation. A meeting in a café or bar in Lille in northern France would be more practical for me. I am available at your convenience. ]
He stood up to stretch before sitting back down. As he was about to resume communication with O5-4, he heard his mother calling:
"Leonard, it's time for breakfast!"
Leonard replied with a smile:
"Yes, Mom, I'm coming!"
O5-4's voice came through the communication, accompanied by a light laugh:
- [ O5-4: I completely understand, Leonard -chuckle-, I suggest we meet at café XXXX in the Lille area tomorrow at 3 PM. Also, I wish you a good appetite! ]
Leonard, embarrassed by this familiar interaction during the communication with O5-4, ended the connection. He went to the kitchen, where he found his mother preparing breakfast. The moments spent with his family were precious, offering a breath of fresh air in a stressful daily routine.
After finishing his breakfast, Leonard returned to his room. He was about to lie back down for some rest when suddenly, he heard a soft knock on the window, which caught his attention. Approaching the window, Leonard was stunned to find an elite team of 25 Foundation operators outside, equipped with futuristic tactical gear and armbands featuring the Resh-1 logo. They were all on one knee, heads bowed respectfully, facing Leonard.
The closest operator, who had knocked on the window, approached Leonard, kneeled like the others, and spoke in a firm and respectful voice: "Administrator, Resh-1 is deployed and ready to serve you. Myself and my 24 comrades swear our allegiance and loyalty to you. What are your orders?"
Leonard remained speechless in front of the window for a few moments before responding in a very stressed tone: "I accept your allegiance, but for now, leave. Someone might spot you here."
The operator who had spoken earlier slightly raised his head and proudly replied: "Do not worry, Boss, our tactical gear includes an optical camouflage module with thermal insulators. No one can see us if we do not wish it, except you, thanks to the system."
Leonard looked at the Resh-1 members in silence, holding the bridge of his nose, unable to utter a word. Eventually, he regained his composure and ordered: "Stay and secure the surroundings of my residence. I also have a meeting tomorrow at café XXXX at 3 PM. Please make all necessary preparations."
The Resh-1 commander stood up, saluted Leonard, and declared: "COUNT ON US, ADMINISTRATOR." He then turned to his comrades: "We will split into 5 teams of 5 operators. The first team, mine, will handle close protection of the Administrator. The second and third teams will patrol around the house. The fourth team will establish a fixed base near the Administrator's residence to ensure responsiveness to any incidents or threats. The fifth team will head to Site-35 to retrieve more equipment and vehicles. Let's move out!"
"At your orders, Commander!" they responded, then dispersed to carry out their respective tasks.
Leonard observed the scene in silence, sighed slightly, and then returned to his bed, eventually falling asleep.
During his sleep, Leonard received a notification:
[ Ding! The System update is almost finished, loading at 75%… ]
