Chapter 27
“Are you going to sleep?”
“Maybe.”
“I haven’t even asked my question yet.”
I wiggled a bit as I spoke.
“We agreed to ask and answer questions one at a time.”
“Oh.”
Eden replied lazily.
“Go ahead, ask your question.”
“Are you going to disappear before I wake up again tomorrow? Will you come home a few times a year? Or are you always going to be on business trips all year?”
“That’s not one question.”
“Please answer it all in one go.”
Eden chuckled softly.
“I can’t give a long answer now. I’ll explain in the morning.”
Eden closed his eyes. It was a bit annoying, but I closed my eyes next to him.
‘This feels really weird.’
Tonight turned out differently than I imagined.
I was even ready to be kicked out of the house in my pajamas.
My breath was still catching, making a slight sound, and I felt weak all over. There was a strange itchy feeling inside my body.
I rested my head quietly on Eden’s arm.
***
The next morning.
When I opened my eyes, Eden was still there.
For breakfast, I made pancakes, grilled bacon, and warm mushroom soup.
Eden ate quietly, talking about various things.
“Sir Eden, what do you usually do on your business trips?”
I decided to take an interest in Eden’s work this time. Eden replied quietly while eating.
“As a Holy Knight, I have many duties. Currently, my main job is to spread the faith in the countryside.”
“Oh, I know about that. Holy Knights participate in temple events, offer blessing prayers, and purify contaminated lands, right?”
Eden nodded.
Being a Holy Knight is the most popular profession these days.
One must have both knowledge and combat skills, and the temple’s Holy Knights, like Eden, are expected to be handsome.
They must also possess ‘holy power,’ a nearly innate ability. Thus, Holy Knights were admired by everyone in the empire.
There were a few Holy Knights famous for their beauty.
For example, Talrius, who was known for his looks, though not as much as Eden. And Violet, known as the greatest genius and beauty of the era.
But the most popular of them all was Eden.
These people were both celebrities and idols.
“Besides that, I also go around ancient ruins to lift curses or purify relics of evil gods.”
In the capital where I live, there’s no need for such things.
But in this world, there are other species besides humans, and even dragons from legends exist.
So what Eden does is not just religious rituals but protecting people from real threats.
‘I also do independent theological research or go on missionary trips.’
But those cases are rare. Holy Knights have the best career path in the temple. So everyone wants those prestigious missions.
“I heard that the highlight of temple missions is not just in the empire but also in neighboring countries, serving private worship for nobles.”
“That’s correct.”
“Sir Eden, do you want to climb the ranks? Is that why you go on business trips often?”
I roughly knew Eden’s future. He would frequently attend private worships for nobles over the next two years.
It was said that during this period, the temple received the highest donations in history.
Nobles were delighted and moved just to see Eden, donating enormous sums.
“The temple prefers that direction.”
“So you have months of business trips planned, right?”
Eden’s expression hardened.
“When is your next trip?”
“Next week.”
“Are you going far?”
“I’m leaving for the ißen Principality. Then I’ll tour the provinces of the empire, which will take about two months.”
I expected it, but it was still a bit lonely. I tried not to show it.
But at least Eden was telling me his schedule, which was better than my dreams.
Back then, I stayed alone at home, imagining all sorts of things.
Wondering if Eden had fallen for a beautiful daughter of some local lord.
Or if women were throwing themselves at him at countless balls I didn’t attend.
“So, are you done with your questions now?”
“Just one more. If we didn’t actually, you know, spend the night together, wouldn’t that mean Sir Eden is still pure? What’s the standard for breaking the vow of purity?”
“If I strongly believe I broke it, then it’s broken.”
“Really?”
“Prayer is a powerful promise between the god and me. My own belief can turn my mind into heaven or hell. Since I truly believed I spent the night with you, it’s considered a broken vow. It’s harder to deceive oneself than you think.”
I sort of understood, but also didn’t. I blinked.
“Glad we cleared that up before your trip. Right?”
“……Are you okay with this?”
“Yes. It’s a bit lonely being alone in a newlywed home, but the world needs Sir Eden. Just send me letters sometimes.”
I tried to sound as cheerful as possible, but Eden seemed to notice something.
“I didn’t expect to get married. So I planned my schedule tightly. I know it’s selfish.”
Eden said. I almost teared up.
This was what I longed to hear in my dreams. But never did. The words that he understood me.
Just hearing that moved me. So my voice came out gently.
“I’m happy you’re thoughtful. I can manage the house alone. Don’t worry. Just remember you have a home to return to.”
Eden’s lips moved. He seemed to hesitate for a moment.
“Bryn. Most of these trips are voluntary. But my goal isn’t to climb the ranks.”
“Then?”
“I’m traveling all over to find someone. These trips are a means to that end.”
“Who are you looking for?”
I widened my eyes.
“I hope you don’t think I’m crazy.”
“I won’t. Tell me.”
Eden explained softly.
“As you know, this land has stronger holy power and magic than others. So it’s fertile and ideal for creating magical tools.”
“I know, I learned in the temple. They say long ago, different races, including demons and gods, stayed here in large numbers. Ancient times mean they lived in groups or small kingdoms.”
“So there are traces left by them. Like dungeons, gates, and barriers. I’m studying if any of these could be harmful to people.”
I was secretly surprised. Eden was sharing such things with me?
‘Wasn’t this a secret at this time?’
Anyway, I could easily understand what Eden was saying.
Eden’s second time saving the world would happen about two years later.
‘In two years, he’ll save the world again. This man.’
That was an unbelievable event.
Demons who lived here a thousand years ago.
It was revealed they had set up something like time bombs in this country.
Those ‘bombs’ were dungeons. A dungeon hidden under the capital emerged, filled with harmful substances.
‘If those harmful substances explode, everyone in the capital melts and dies.’
I didn’t fully understand what those harmful substances were.
But I heard that in a region where a dungeon appeared before the capital, an entire village melted, causing many casualties.
Eden was the only scholar secretly studying this dungeon.
Eden calmed and persuaded people. Then quietly walked into the dungeon and successfully sealed it.
It turned out the dungeon under the capital was connected to dungeons across the empire.
When the capital’s dungeon was sealed, the others disappeared into the ground.
‘And yes, as a result, this man’s status became unmatched. He became a god-like figure in this country.’
That was the moment a hero emerged.
