RWBY : Remnant Hulk

Chapter 9: Holding Back

The story continues as Team RWBY and Team JNPR attend Professor Peter Port's class, except for Yang, who decides to skip this particular lecture. The classroom is filled with the chatter of students, some paying attention, while others seem uninterested. Professor Port, with his grandiose storytelling, recounts one of his many adventures, trying to emphasize the importance of strategy, bravery, and perseverance in battle. The students listen, some more engaged than others, as he brings out a live Boarbatusk, a Grimm resembling a massive, spiked boar. The creature lets out a menacing growl, stomping its hooves against the floor, causing a few students to shift nervously in their seats.

Weiss Schnee volunteers to take on the Boarbatusk, confidently stepping forward. As the battle commences, Weiss demonstrates her skill with Myrtenaster, elegantly dodging and counterattacking. However, as she fights, Ruby, from the sidelines, tries to offer her advice and encouragement, unintentionally distracting Weiss. Annoyed, Weiss snaps at Ruby, demanding that she let her handle it alone. With a final strike, Weiss successfully defeats the Grimm, but instead of celebrating, she turns her frustration toward Ruby.

"You're supposed to be the leader," Weiss scolds, her voice sharp with irritation. "But all you do is get in the way!"

Ruby looks taken aback by Weiss's words, feeling the sting of her teammate's disapproval. She lowers her head, unsure of how to respond as Professor Port praises Weiss for her skill while also emphasizing the importance of teamwork. The class eventually ends, but Ruby is left feeling down, questioning whether she is truly fit to be a leader.

After class, both girls seek guidance separately. Ruby, still troubled by Weiss's words, decides to seek advice from Ozpin. She approaches his office hesitantly, unsure if he would have time for her. However, upon entering, she is met with his usual calm and composed demeanor. Ozpin listens patiently as Ruby expresses her concerns about being a leader, her insecurities about being younger than the others, and her struggles with earning Weiss's respect. Ozpin, as always, offers his wisdom in a cryptic yet meaningful way.

"A leader isn't always the strongest or the smartest," Ozpin tells her. "A leader is someone who brings people together and inspires them to be better. You don't have to have all the answers right away. Just be willing to learn."

Meanwhile, Weiss, still feeling the effects of their earlier confrontation, approaches Professor Port after class. She seeks validation, asking if she was right in scolding Ruby. Professor Port, despite his usual dramatic storytelling, offers her a piece of advice that sticks with her.

"Leadership isn't about being perfect, Miss Schnee," he says. "It's about understanding your team, their strengths, and their weaknesses. Perhaps instead of criticizing your leader, you should help her grow."

That night, as Ruby sits at her upper bunk bed, studying diligently and reflecting on the day's events, Weiss returns to their dorm room much later than usual. She pauses at the doorway, observing Ruby's determination as she flips through her notes. A small pang of guilt hits her—maybe she was too harsh. Feeling the need to mend things, Weiss silently prepares two cups of hot chocolate. She sets one beside Ruby, who looks up in surprise.

Weiss checked on Ruby's writing, correcting her, "Emm... you misspell that word Ruby."

"Oh... Thanks." Ruby nervously thanking Weiss.

Weiss, her tone softer than before, admits, "You know... I've always wanted a bunk bed since I was a kid."

Ruby blinks at Weiss's unexpected comment before smiling. The tension between them finally eases, and the two settle their differences, understanding each other a little better than before.

The next day, Team JNPR walks together toward their classroom, chatting about their morning. As they approach the entrance, a trap has been set for them—Cardin Winchester and his team, CRDL, are waiting above on the rooftop, ready to drop a large basin filled with paint balloons. Just as the basin tips over, Pyrrha, Ren, and Nora react quickly, dodging out of the way. Jaune, however, is not as fortunate.

Splat! The paint explodes all over Jaune, leaving him drenched in bright colors.

Pyrrha looks guilty as she helps him up. "I'm so sorry, Jaune…"

Cardin and his team laugh from above before running off, escaping before they can be confronted. Nora fumes with anger, clenching her fists. "Those jerks! I swear, I'm gonna—"

"Nora, calm down," Ren interrupts, placing a hand on her shoulder. "It's not worth it."

Jaune sighs in frustration as they help him clean up before heading to class. His teammates support him, but deep down, Jaune feels humiliated. He already struggles with his studies and combat skills, and now he's being singled out as a target for bullying. It weighs on him, but he tries to shake it off as they walk into the academy.

Upon entering their classroom, they are greeted by Bruce, who immediately notices Jaune's disheveled appearance. "What happened?" Bruce asks with a concerned expression.

Jaune hesitates before Pyrrha explains the situation. Bruce listens carefully before offering each of them a piece of candy. The small gesture seems to lighten the mood a bit, as Nora and Ren accept theirs enthusiastically.

As Bruce hands Jaune a candy, he looks at him thoughtfully. "You have a lot of potential," he remarks, catching Jaune off guard.

Jaune blinks in surprise. "Wait… what? You really think so?"

Bruce nods but doesn't elaborate further. Instead, he crosses his arms and states, "But until you activate your aura, you won't be able to reach that potential."

Silence falls over Team JNPR. Pyrrha, Ren, and Nora exchange glances as realization dawns upon them. Pyrrha's eyes widen as she recalls something crucial—during their initiation test, Jaune never activated his aura. Even when they fought the Deathstalker, he never displayed any signs of using it.

Nora gasps. "Wait. What?! You still haven't activated your aura?"

Jaune's face flushes with embarrassment. "I-I guess not?"

Ren pinches the bridge of his nose while Pyrrha looks genuinely concerned. She had assumed he had simply been holding back, but now she realizes that he never even knew how to use it in the first place.

Bruce chuckles at their reactions but doesn't press the issue further. "You'll figure it out," he says, turning to leave. "But you need to take that first step yourself."

With that, Bruce bids them farewell and walks off. Jaune remains standing there, still trying to process what just happened. He never thought about his aura before, but now, for the first time, he starts to realize just how much he's been holding himself back.

As the day goes on, Team JNPR and Team RWBY continue their routine, but the weight of Bruce's words lingers in Jaune's mind. Change is coming—whether he's ready for it or not.
