Chapter 7: Chapter 7:- Checking Up On Jin Woo
After a brief pause, Jin-Ah finally nodded. "Okay… Thank you both. I'll be back soon." She gave one last glance at Jin Woo before hugging me tightly one last time before quietly leaving the room while still sobbing silently.
Once she was gone, my mother sat down in the chair beside Jin Woo's bed, gently smoothing the blanket over him. I settled into the chair on the other side, watching Jin Woo's steady breathing.
I leaned forward, staring at him. "Hey, you. "Helping others before yourself weirdo". Wake up already, you weirdo. Don't you dare make my dear Jin-Ah cry again like that over your 'helping others' nonsense. If she sheds one more tear because of you, I swear, I'll kick your ass and throw you out of your own house."
My mother frowned, shaking her head. "Don't say such things to him, honey. He's going through enough. He needs your support, not threats."
I scoffed, not backing down. "This bastard deserves it, Mom. He ended up like this because he keeps trying to help everyone else before thinking about himself or his family. It's stupid.
"For me, it's simple: you, Jin-Ah, and his mom — you're the ones who matter most to me. I'm not going to run around trying to save the whole world like I'm some kind of hero.
Did you see Jin-Ah's state? Her father's gone, her mom's in a vegetative state, and now this idiot is in a coma. What's the point of helping others when your own family is falling apart? That's just not who I am. That's not who I will ever be."
My mother sighed softly, her eyes filled with both concern and understanding. "I know you're worried about him, but he's doing what he believes is right. You've grown so strong, but you've changed too," she said, looking at me with a mixture of pride and sadness.
I leaned back in the chair, crossing my arms. "Yeah, well, I'm not going to let anyone I care about get hurt because of some heroic bullshit idea. That's not happening on my watch."
She sighed again, giving me a small, bittersweet smile, as if she didn't know whether to argue or accept how I'd turned out.
Jin-Ah returned after a while, looking more refreshed but still carrying the weight of worry in her eyes. Her hair was slightly damp from the bath, and she had changed into more comfortable clothes. She gave me a tired smile before sitting back in her usual spot beside Jin Woo's bed.
My mom stood up gently, placing a reassuring hand on Jin-Ah's shoulder. "I'm going to check on your mom in the other ward, sweetheart. You're doing a great job taking care of your brother, but don't forget to take care of yourself too. If you need anything, Samuel is here by your side, feel free to ask for anything."
Jin-Ah nodded, though the concern didn't leave her face. "Okay, thank you."
As my mom left the room, I turned to Jin-Ah. She was staring at Jin Woo, her hands gripping the side of his bed tightly. "He still hasn't moved at all," she whispered, her voice shaky. "What if he doesn't wake up?"
I leaned forward, trying to catch her gaze. "Hey, he'll wake up. I know it's hard right now, but Jin Woo is strong. He's been through worse, and he's not going to let this keep him down. And if he doesn't wake up soon I will make sure to knock some sense into him and wake him up."
"But what if—" Jin-Ah started, her voice cracking slightly, but I quickly cut her off.
"No 'what ifs.' We'll make sure he's okay. And if he doesn't wake up soon, I'll kick his ass myself," I said with a small grin, trying to lighten the mood.
Jin-Ah managed a weak smile, though her eyes were still clouded with doubt. "You really think he'll be okay?"
"I know he will be," I replied firmly. "And I'll be here with you until he is. You're not alone in this, alright?"
Jin-Ah's eyes softened, though the worry still lingered on her face. She gave a small nod.
"Go check on your mom," I said gently, and without hesitation, she headed toward her mother's ward.
Meanwhile, my mother had already made her way to Jin Woo's mother's room. The air was thick with silence, broken only by the rhythmic beeping of the machines keeping her alive. Sitting down beside the bed, my mother gently took the woman's hand in hers, her expression soft and full of concern.
"I'm so sorry, but I have to ask you to wake up soon," my mother whispered, her voice filled with quiet emotion. "Jin Woo and Jin-Ah need you. They've been through so much, and it's been so hard on them without their parents. They're waiting for you."
She squeezed the woman's hand gently, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I promise, I'll look after them. Jin Woo and Jin-Ah will be safe. I'll do everything I can to protect them, but they still need you. Please, come back soon."
As my mother sat there, Jin-Ah quietly entered the room. She saw my mother sitting by her mom's side, and for a moment, the two of them just stood there in silence. Jin-Ah slowly walked over and sat next to my mother, resting her head on her shoulder.
"They'll be okay, Jin-Ah," my mother whispered, giving her a comforting squeeze. "We just need to keep believing."
Jin-Ah nodded, though the weight of everything still showed in her eyes. The two of them sat together for a while, taking comfort in each other's presence before they both stood up to head back to Jin Woo's room.
Back in Jin Woo's room, I sat there, staring at him, my fists clenching in frustration. I leaned forward, narrowing my eyes at his still body. "Hey, you helping others idiot," I muttered in a low, angry voice. "I've had enough of this bullshit cringe crap. If you don't wake up before I get discharged, I swear I'll beat the hell out of you."
I crossed my arms, feeling the anger bubbling up inside me. "What's the point of being all heroic if you end up like this, huh? Leaving your sister and mom like that? If you think I'm going to let you keep pulling this crap, you're dead wrong."
I leaned closer to his bed, voice filled with frustration. "You think helping strangers is more important than your own family? Look where that's gotten you. If you don't wake up soon, I'll make sure you regret it. You're not getting away with this, Jin Woo."
My fists tightened as I continued. "You better open your eyes before I'm out of here, or I'll kick your sorry ass so hard, you'll wish you stayed in this coma."
I let out a breath, the anger still simmering beneath the surface. "You've got people here waiting for you, you moron. So stop being an idiot and wake up already. And if you still don't change, I'll take them away from you, they are better being with me then you."
When they returned, I glanced at them both, noticing the quiet strength in their eyes, but also the exhaustion. I gave Jin-Ah a reassuring nod as they settled back in by Jin Woo's side, while I returned to my ward.
As I headed back to my own ward, I couldn't help but feel drained from everything that had happened. My legs felt heavy, and the exhaustion was starting to catch up with me. When I finally made it to my bed, I sat down and let out a long breath, leaning back against the pillows.
My fists were still clenched, the frustration from Jin Woo's situation gnawing at me. I glanced at the ceiling, feeling the weight of everything pressing down. Jin Woo needed to wake up, and the fact that he wasn't was eating me alive.
A few minutes passed before my mom walked into the room. She had that soft look in her eyes, the kind she always had when she was worried about me. "How are you feeling?" she asked, sitting down beside me.
I shrugged. "Tired. Frustrated. I just want Jin Woo to wake up already."
She sighed, brushing a hand through my hair. "I know. But you need to take care of yourself too, okay? You've been through a lot, and you still need to recover."
I nodded, though I didn't really feel like I had a choice. "Yeah, I know. How's Jin-Ah doing?"
"She's trying to be strong, but it's hard for her. She's carrying a lot on her shoulders," my mom said, her voice soft. "But she'll be okay. She's got people around her who care about her."
I let out a small sigh, my fists finally unclenching. "I just hope Jin Woo wakes up soon."
Mom nodded, then stood up to check the blankets around me. "You rest for now. The doctors will be here soon to check on you."
