Chapter 5
Tap-tap-
The sound of knocking echoed as Eshika’s door swung open.
Leaning against her bed and reading a book, Eshika greeted the intruder with a cold stare.
“Eshika.”
Dressed in a simple light blue dress, she was none other than Yurie.
Looking pitifully at her, alone in the cold, poorly lit room, Yurie approached the bed,
“How are you feeling? The doctor says you have a head injury… Do you recognize who I am?”
A little irritated by that obnoxious smile, Eshika calmed herself.
Like a bird with a broken wing, she could slowly twist the story. Then, leave the cage in chaos to escape.
“Yurie Anesis, my one and only friend.”
A smile tugged at the corners of Yurie’s mouth at Eshika’s stiff words.
“You’re probably thinking, ‘I hit my head and lost my memory.” she thought.
“Don’t worry, I am perfectly fine. Moreover, I read this story about a thief who covets his friend’s husband with a shameless and abominable scheme.”
Yurie’s brow furrowed.
“The thief is a shallow, uneducated, pathetic whore.”
Without a blink of an eye, Eshika continued her words, watching Yurie’s face closely. Yurie’s forced smile was nowhere to be seen.
The first one to show a smirk was Eshika.
“Do you want to hear more?”
It was no wonder that Yurie’s stomach was in turmoil right now. This was not the reaction she had expected from her when she entered the room. She had a small knife hidden in her skirt in case she went rampage. A small scar on her fair face would be a good spot to cut.
Even if Eshika suddenly went on a rampage with a knife all by herself, there was no one in the ducal house who would try to find out the truth.
“What now Yurie Anesis?” she smiles.
But Eshika showed no interest in physical confrontation, instead she was scratching beneath the surface with her words.
Yurie’s eyebrows rose at the blatant display, a reminder of his childhood when he had been intimidated by Baroness Brigitte’s power.
“Eshika!” Yurie gritted his teeth.
Eshika Klaus wasn’t supposed to look like this.
When she was told he wouldn’t be able to leave his room for over ten days, she thought he might have died of shock.
No wonder she’d been rationed rotting bread by the Duchess.
But Eshika’s blood color was better than it had been before she was injured, and there was a sharp sparkle of malice in her eyes.
It was as if she had become a different person.
“You!”
Yurie raised a finger and pointed at Eshika.
“You’d better not talk to me like that, the Duchess just appointed me as a head maid.” happiness can be seen in her eyes.
In a normal family, a head maid wouldn’t be able to do anything to a noblewoman.
But in the House of Klaus, the internal power rested with only one person, Duke Klaus’s mother, Leona Klaus.
“Of course, you and I were once friends, but……. Yurie smiled sheepishly.
“I’m a head maid, and I intend to do the Duchess’s favor to the best of my ability. It’s only natural that I would be loyal to someone who recognized my worth, right?”
By this, she meant that she would do her best to torment Eshika.
“Besides, one day, the Duchess will be my mother-in-law.”
She added to provoke Eshika.
Yurie considered herself a winner.
It was amusing to watch Eshika, a girl with nothing but a family name and a half-face, a girl who had everything sheI wanted in the world, fall apart at the hand of Duke Klaus.
Watching her despair over losing her husband’s heart was a reward for all the years she endured soothing her silly tantrums.
‘I would be keeping an eye on her more actively in the future.’
“Then rest well. It’s time for His Majesty the Duke to return from hunting, so I need to prepare some fresh clothes for him.”
When Eshika said nothing, Yurie smiled and turned around.
‘I guess I can make the scars on your face next time.’
Even so, how much more would Duke Klaus, who hates Eshika, be horrified when he sees her disfigured face?
Now that she is the head maid, she will have many opportunities.
“Yurie”
Eshika’s voice was heard from behind, as if she was making her last plea.
Yurie stopped her steps and looked back at Eshika with a noble smile still on her face.
In the darkness of the room, the inside of her walls glowed.
“My parents used to send me jewelry every month…After thinking about it, I didn’t think I needed it anymore, so I sent a letter saying I wouldn’t receive it anymore.”
Yurie’s hands flinched at those words.
“That is… What are you talking about?”
“Originally, you always received jewels in front of the Duke’s main gate. It means there is no need for that anymore.”
Eshika leisurely watched the corners of Yurie’s mouth tremble.
“Especially since you became the head maid, there is no need to take on such trivial tasks.”
Yurie hastily refuted Eshika’s words.
“That… still, it’s your family’s help, don’t you think you should accept it?
Her red eyes were shaking.
Eshika had an idea as to why Yurie suddenly became the head maid.
Every month, Baroness Brigitte, Eshika’s mother’s family, sent her fine jewelry.
Yurie would have stolen the finest of them.
“No, I don’t want to, I’m sick of jewelry.”
“I don’t think so..”
“A letter should have arrived at the family home by now.”
Hearing Eshika’s words, Yurie held onto her skirt tightly.
All of the stolen jewels must have been used as bribes to the Duchess.
And the Duchess doesn’t keep anyone around who doesn’t benefit her.
What she wants from Yurie is a jewel of the highest quality that lasts.
“Anyway, the role of head maid. Do your best.”
Eshika smiled brightly, and Yurie’s eyebrows twitched.
Seeing her already pale face made Eshika almost laugh.
In the novel, Yurie Anesis was able to marry Duke Klaus because a year from now, she would carry his child in her womb.
Until then, she must have embezzled the jewels sent to Eshika and lied to the Duchess.
However, in order for Yurie to continue to receive the Duchess’ favor, she can’t afford to lose Eshika’s jewelry.
“….”
The momentum from earlier was gone, and Yurie turned around with a stern expression on her face and walked out.
‘That stupid girl will take measures to make sure the jewelry doesn’t stop’
“Well, good luck with that.” she smirks.
