Chapter 44
Sella approached Kallian and opened the box.
In the box, there were blood-stained canes and bandages.
Perhaps finding it more disgusting than she had anticipated, Kallian furrowed his brow for a moment but cautiously picked up one of the canes.
“Sella said she had also been a victim herself,”
Kallian’s chilly gaze was fixed on Eshika.
“Her younger sister, who was also a maid, left the mansion two years ago.”
Sella’s eyes flashed as she tightly clenched her fist.
“From here on, you tell the story.”
Kallian ordered Sella, gripping his chin.
Yurie suddenly had a foreboding feeling. She had never heard of Sella’s younger sister…
Could it be that Sella is not making up stories?
“Ahemel, my mother and sister are alive. My sister injured her leg, making her unable to work, so… I’m sustaining them with the money I send.”
Sella recalled that day’s events.
Her sister, who had caught a severe cold, couldn’t properly clean the bedsheets of a lady in the mansion in time.
The lady, already uneasy seeing another mistress wearing a more beautiful dress than herself at the tea party, was particularly uncomfortable.
A tragedy unfolded from there.
“This is the cane that struck my sister. The bandage was wrapped around her calf…”
The bandage was stained brown, indicating how much blood had been shed.
Staring at the box, Sella opened her mouth to speak.
“My sister had evidence of her mistreatment, but she never thought that a mere maid like her could use it to expose the wrongdoings of a superior person.”
“Even if it’s just a mere maid.”
Kallian looked at Eshika with a cold gaze.
“You are all nothing more than assets of the Klaus family.”
Experienced maids were necessary for the functioning of the household.
“If someone repeatedly damages those assets, even if they are a member of the family, they should pay an appropriate price.”
Kallian hoped that Eshika would feel fear even now.
He hoped for her to straighten her stiffened neck, moisten her young eyeballs, and apologize for her mistakes.
May she plead for love, saying she was jealous of Yurie and couldn’t help it.
“I trust that the Duke has promised to ease my sister’s grievances.”
Sella’s trembling voice was heard.
Kallian nodded lightly.
“Staking the honor of Klaus. Of course.”
As if gaining courage from those words, Sella straightened her neck and spoke more clearly.
“Duke, in the cane you are holding, there are nail marks of the person who hit my sister. Probably, it’s the same person who hit the head maid.”
“What?”
“If you wish, I can bring my sister here to prove that the scars on her leg match those on the head maid.”
“Sella. This is not about finding the culprit.”
Kallian raised his eyebrows, slightly puzzled.
The culprit is right in front of him.
Eshika Klaus. With her innocent blue eyes, shamelessly observing this situation.
“It seems you don’t understand.”
With a cold voice, Eshika snatched the cane from Kallian’s hand.
Though distracted, she was too fast for Kallian to catch her.
Before he knew it, the cane was in Eshika’s hand, and she could clearly see the nail marks on it, along with her own.
“What are you doing right now?!”
Kallian tried to snatch the cane back from Eshika, but for a moment, he felt an overwhelming force from her, causing him to hesitate.
His heart was pounding, and Kallian looked into Eshika’s eyes.
And soon, his gaze shifted to her hands.
Nail marks… Different from Eshika’s nails.
“I haven’t stained or polished my nails since I arrived at Duke Klaus’s. If the Duke had shown even a bit of interest in me, he would have known.”
Kallian’s heart was pounding.
“These are not my nail marks.”
On the stick, there were sharp and deep nail marks and pink dye stains.
Kallian raised his head.
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
“Your Grace, maybe you should stop listening, as it seems the Duchess and Sella have conspired more than you think…”
Yurie tried to quickly change the subject, but Eshika interrupted her again.
With a cold yet powerful voice that penetrated Kallian’s ears deeply, Eshika continued.
“In any region of Terressian, there is no tradition of hitting someone’s calves with a cane.”
“……!”
Yurie’s pupils shook significantly.
Kalian stood frozen in place, his brow furrowed.
“…….”
So, the nail marks were just a warm-up.
An appetizer for the undeniable truth.
“……What does that mean?”
Kallian asked, looking at her with his molded violet eyes.
Eshika pursed her lips.
“Everywhere in Terressian, if a child does something wrong, they are made to raise their hands or kneel. In strictly corporal punishment families, they might slap the palms, but not the calves…….”
A new smile playing on her lips.
“We don’t ……slap them.”
“There’s no way.”
Immediately, Kallian countered Eshika’s words.
“When I was young…”
But Kallian couldn’t finish his sentence.
In an instant, Kallian’s violet eyes, seemingly realizing something, shook.
“On the other hand, there are countries that have a custom of hitting the calves when a child does something wrong.”
Kallian’s mother, Leona, was a descendant of the royal family of the fallen kingdom of Smitchen.
“…Investigate. Find out which country’s custom it is.”
Yurie bit her lips tightly.
