Chapter 25
She handed Heremia two prepared identity papers and recommendation letters, then left the party.
There would be a day when her help today would pay off.
As Eshika walked to catch her carriage, someone called her name from behind.
“Duchess!”
She paused for a moment, then jumped up and came to her side, panting.
It was Baroness Helenia Merhin.
Her expression was not good, and she was quite nervous.
“……About earlier, I’m sorry.”
Helenia said, looking slightly down, unable to meet Eshika’s eyes.
She was referring to the time she had tried to talk to Eshika, but was unable to continue the conversation because of the other ladies’ stares.
There seemed to be a sense of guilt for openly excluding someone in that situation.
“And…….”
Helenia hesitated for a moment before continuing.
“Your conversation with the maid earlier, I overheard it. Oh, I didn’t do it on purpose, I left something behind, and I came to look for it for a while, and then…….”
To Eshika, who was glaring at her for eavesdropping on something she shouldn’t have, Helenia said with an innocent smile.
“You wished me the love of a maid, and I was so… touched.”
Helenia clasped her hands together and her eyes sparkled.
“In a world where love and romance are dead, women who believe in love are rare, and I am one of those rare ones.”
Eshika let her guard down.
In the naive eyes of Helenia, it must have seemed like she was cheering on her maid’s love.
“Actually, I thought you were really scary when I saw how you kept the two ladies frozen in place, but then I realized I was wrong. You’re a really warm-hearted person, and I wish I could be friends with someone like that…”
“…….”
“If you don’t mind, do you think I could invite her to my house sometime?”
She asked in an eager voice.
She looked like she might cry if he said no.
Apparently, Helenia had fallen for Eshika’s charms.
In any case, Eshika was glad she hadn’t noticed.
If she had realized that Heremia was no ordinary maid, she might have had to make the unfortunate choice of silencing her up.
Perhaps Helenia could not even imagine how harsh Eshika’s thoughts had briefly crossed her mind.
Eshika’s lips curled.
“…Sure, let’s do that.”
A naive, straightforward type like Helenia was not a bad thing, even for Eshika.
Eshika’s voice was dry, but not cold.
“I will see you again.”
It didn’t carry the same intimidating aura as it did when dealing with the two countesses earlier.
Helenia’s eyes sparkled again.
She looked like a child who had gotten what she wanted.
Slowly raising her gaze to lock eyes with mine, Eshika looked at the emotional Helenia, then turned around.
“I’ll be in touch!”
Without answering Helenia’s words from behind her, Eshika climbed into the carriage.
As she watched the carriage pull away, Helenia pursed her lips.
“She seems truly impressive. This is like love and war!”
Meanwhile, as the carriage drove away from the Count, Eshika leaned back and closed her eyes.
She was tired after talking so much for so long.
Her original destination was Astia, but she didn’t want to be mauled by the wildcats on the road, so she dealt with them.
‘By the way… the person who was looking at me earlier…’
She felt someone’s gaze lingering on her throughout.
When she turned her gaze in that direction, it disappeared like a mirage.
‘…If it was Helenia, there’s probably no need to be concerned.’
Eshika decided not to dwell on it any further.
