Reincarnation of a Hunter

Chapter 5.2 - The Bastard of Westphalia (5)

Countess Laurian’s jaw was about to fall off, and the Knights were motionless as they looked at each other.

“Isn’t it too much to recommend an illegitimate as a Viscount?” “Shhh! Shut up. Do you want to die?” “That bastard is lucky. The Count has given him a great gift.” “I see his love for his son is amazing.”

Everyone said the same thing as if Eric had won the lottery.

However, I still could not understand what was happening.

‘Why me? Are you going to abandon your estate?’

Perhaps most of the people in the room don’t know.

Marseille Territory was a land in poverty and had been running a shortage for 10,000 years.

It faces a large forest and should be able to keep enemies from invading, but its workforce is too weak to defeat the invaders, and the outlaws have taken over.

With the Lord being away from the estate, there was poor management, and the number of immigrants was considerable.

Of course, since the refugees were not listed as permanent residents, there was no tax revenue and it consumed the budget.

Also, due to the lack of capacity to expand farmland, production continued to go down.

Every year they would issue bonds with low funding, bought and burned by the House of Westphalia.

Are you planning on leaving Marseille and stopping the bonds? In that case, I’ll take over, then the House of Westphalia will be out of the picture. It’s a scheme by the family that doesn’t want to suffer the ‘stigma of being a nobleman’ for abandoning Marseille!’

If a nobleman abandons his land or sells it for money, his reputation will be greatly damaged.

They would be removed by the upper class for not fulfilling their duties as a nobleman.

Having Marseille’s blood running through my veins was the reason for who I am today. They must have understood that since I’m good, I’m not going to die.

I was dealt with in no time. I can’t believe they’ve been hiding something like this.’

He lifted his head and looked ahead.

Minor Lord Noah and the previous Count of Westphalia were laughing and talking.

It seemed like they had already met. The Countess Laurian who was next to him was still stunned.

Only my father, the former Count, and three Lords knew about this, not even the Countess.

I grasped my fists and closed my mouth.

The situation has pushed me to make a choice.

But that doesn’t mean I could avoid it. I have no choice but to either become the Lord of Marseille or run away.

There was never really another option. It was like a required task that you couldn’t refuse.

‘Become a Lord…’

Everyone wanted to enjoy the power of a ruler.

However, necessary perseverance and commitment are needed to enjoy that power.

‘Am I ready to make that effort and sacrifice?’

I chuckled to myself.

Wasn’t I already living like that in my past life?

‘Is there any reason to live differently?’

Besides, if I woke up as a hunter again, things would be easier…

Because useful abilities and strong force produce a strong power. My own special experiences and memories that other people don’t have would also help.

In other words, a piece of land that’s a waste of time for others, maybe a land of opportunity for me.

‘Are you saying you’re abandoning both Marseille and me? Ha, don’t be ridiculous. I’ll show you how far I’ll go using Marseille as a base.’

A few moments later

I was called by my father and went to his office.

Seated in the office were my father, Count Michael, the previous Count of Westphalia, and Minor Lord Noah.

 “You called” “Have a seat.”

As I sat on the empty seat, my father started speaking.

“I believe you will develop Marseille’s estate well, that’s why I’m sending you there. Please take good care of my hometown.”

My father has been ordered by the former Counts and Minor Lords of Westphalia to abandon Marseille.

They certainly don’t like the idea of paying a large amount of money for a Marseille with whom they have no blood ties.

Even though he knew that, he still said things like,

‘Please take care of my hometown.’

I was upset and angry with my father. He abandoned his hometown and family because of his position and honor but…

‘There’s no point in striking at my father or Count Michael, for that matter. I might as well take advantage of this position.’

Having my mind made up, I took a deep breath and spoke,

“Please burn all issued bonds to Marseille up to this moment”

The others were surprised to hear that. I never would have thought I knew the details.

The former Count of Westphalia spoke first,

“How much do you know?” “I knew enough of what I need to know.”

Then he frowned and added, “

If this gets out, nothing good will come to you. You know that, don’t you?”

‘It means be careful on the road at night. I’ll slit your throat if I have to.’

 “Of course, but…”

I leaned forward and softly said,

“Aren’t you going to have trouble without me? I am the only one who carries Marseille’s blood.”

The Count got angry with those words.

“Do you think you are the only one who can be appointed as Lord?”

I replied casually, with a slight smile,

“Perhaps not, but the other noblemen will know you have abandoned your land.”

His eyes went open wide. He suddenly started to laugh very loudly.

“Hahaha! Well, Michael, you’re right about this guy. No wonder, he gave the Palatinate a run.” “…Yes, father-in-law.”

Count Michael replied in a low voice.

In front of my father-in-law, I am always an ‘

Eul’

person. I was impressed by his determination, but I had to take what I could get.

(‘Eul’ or B in the contract which complies with A’s conditions)

He again asked the Count to burn the bonds.

“As I said, I want you to destroy all of Marseille’s bonds. Even the ones in circulation. I know we have the money.” “How long do we have to clean our own back?”

I used the phrase ‘

wiping the back clean’.

My father never thought of it as family land.

“Starting next year, I won’t extend my hands to you.” “Does that mean that you’ll be able to support yourself?” “Let’s do it, I’m not just giving up.”

It’s a good plan to just burn the entire bond and leave. Any economic dependency would just be an interruption.

Count considered my answer, clenched his jaw, and then nodded.

“I understand. I’ll take care of the bond right away.”

‘Okay. Let’s take another shot for this.’

“And there are people I want to take with me.” “Who are they?” “My mother, Head Maid Chloe, Sir Pierre, and his son, Sir Martin.”

I don’t know what might happen to my mother if I leave her here alone.

My mother and I always protect each other by being together.

With Countess Laurian’s personality, she could harm my mother. My father’s favorite mistress.

And taking Head Maid Chloe for this opportunity to steal her from the Countess.

The former Count was confused and asked,

“Why? That story is one thing. The rest is…” “Marseille is my mother’s home, and now that you have other mistresses, let her go. She will be more comfortable with that.” “Hmm. Let me think of it.”

Eric asked Count Michael to allow him to take his mother because he knew that the former Count might disagree.

“Okay, I’ll do that and also give her last name back.”

Giving back the last name means granting the divorce.

‘Nice! I’m done here!’

Looking at Count Michael’s frowning face, I grasped my fists.

⚔️ Correction for ‘Marseille’ instead of ‘Marcel’.
