Chapter 93: The Weight of Truth [93]
Outside the Police Station
The cold wind swept through the parking lot, kicking up dust around the nearby trees. Diana stood with her arms crossed, her eyes fixed on the entrance of the police station, while Chloe paced back and forth, restless. Kyla stood beside them, fidgeting with her fingers, clearly lost in thought.
"Chloe, is he coming out or not?" Diana's gaze never left the door.
"Of course he is, Diana. Clark never fails. It's just a matter of time."
Kyla remained silent, her distant eyes betraying her thoughts. Why do I feel like my whole life changed since I met him?
The heavy door of the station creaked open. Joseph stepped out first, his face as calm as ever. Clark followed closely behind, his posture relaxed yet commanding, radiating an almost magnetic presence.
"Grandfather!" Kyla ran to Joseph, throwing herself into his arms with force. The hug was full of relief and emotion as Joseph stroked her hair, murmuring something inaudible.
Clark kept walking, stopping in front of Diana and Chloe. He looked directly at Diana.
"Don't question him, Diana. I already have the answers. Let him go home."
Diana raised an eyebrow, assessing Clark. "You know my curiosity doesn't work that way, Clark."
"Then respect this. He needs rest now, not more questions."
Chloe adjusted her bag on her shoulder, watching the exchange carefully. "And what do I do? Because this doesn't seem over."
Clark pointed to her car. "Chloe, since you have a car, take Joseph and Kyla home. They need you now more than ever."
Chloe hesitated for a moment but nodded. "Alright. Come on, Kyla, Joseph. I'll drive you."
Kyla glanced over her shoulder, her eyes lingering on Clark. He really understands everything, doesn't he?
Joseph gave Clark a brief nod before following Chloe to the car, still holding his granddaughter's hand. Diana watched silently, not hiding her curiosity.
"You always have a solution, don't you, Clark?"
Clark gave a small smile but looked away. "Not always, Diana. But this one wasn't too difficult."
As they got into the car, Kyla hesitated before closing the door. She ran back, pulling Joseph with her.
"Clark, wait."
Joseph stopped beside Kyla, looking at Clark with a mix of gratitude and respect. He stepped forward.
"Thank you, Clark. Once again, you did what many wouldn't."
Clark extended his hand, shaking Joseph's firmly. "You don't need to thank me, Joseph. Just take care of your family."
Joseph turned to Diana, who stood nearby. "And you, young lady, what's your name?"
Diana stepped forward, her gaze steady on Joseph. "Diana. I respect your fight, Joseph. What you do for your land and your family is admirable."
Joseph smiled faintly. "Then we have something in common, Diana. Thank you for understanding."
Kyla looked at Clark, her face still filled with emotion. "Clark, thank you for everything. I... I don't know how I'll ever repay you for saving my grandfather."
Clark smiled gently. "You don't have to, Kyla. Just stay by his side. That's enough."
Kyla nodded slowly, a warmth growing in her chest. He's more than he appears. I need to know more about him.
Joseph pulled Kyla back toward the car, waving one last time to Clark and Diana. Chloe, already behind the wheel, watched everything with a mix of curiosity and relief. As the car drove off, Diana crossed her arms, giving Clark a pointed look.
"Tell me what you know, Clark. The suspense is killing me."
Clark gave a small smile, clearly dodging the question. He gestured toward the nearby truck.
"I'll tell you on the way home."
Diana arched an eyebrow, her stance firm. "On the way home? You think I'll just wait?"
Clark was already walking toward the truck, opening the driver's side door with a casual motion. "Yes, because you trust me, Diana. And you know I'll tell you everything… when the time is right."
Diana took a deep breath, adjusting her coat before following him. He always does this. It always has to be on his terms.
She climbed into the truck, shutting the door firmly, her eyes still fixed on Clark as he started the engine. "You know your calmness sometimes annoys me, right?"
Clark chuckled softly, keeping his eyes on the road. "That's why we work so well together, Diana. You like speed, and I prefer patience. Perfect balance."
She rolled her eyes but couldn't hide a small smile. "Fine, Clark. On the way, then. But don't think I'll forget."
The hum of the engine filled the silence as they pulled away from the station, the mystery still lingering between them like an unseen passenger.

Truck – Smallville Road
The sound of the engine and the wind filled the space as the truck moved along the winding road. Diana watched the passing scenery, but her thoughts were still stuck on what Clark had revealed.
"Clark, you've been silent for too long. If you're going to tell me what you discovered, do it now."
Clark let out a light sigh, his eyes still fixed on the road.
"Diana, Joseph is innocent. He had nothing to do with what happened at the construction site."
"I figured as much. But if he's innocent, why did he accept being arrested? Who is he protecting, Clark?"
Clark's voice remained calm, but there was an underlying seriousness that demanded attention.
"Kyla. She was the cause of the accident, Diana."
Diana uncrossed her arms, turning to him with narrowed eyes.
"Kyla? That girl who could barely look at you without freezing? How could she be responsible, Clark?"
Clark adjusted the truck's gear, glancing briefly at Diana before answering.
"It was an accident. She can transform into a white wolf, something inherited from Kawatche legends. Kyla went to the construction site at night, probably to scare Dan Hammond and drive him away from the land. But something went wrong."
Diana leaned forward slightly, her brow furrowed.
"Something went wrong how? What exactly happened, Clark?"
"When Kyla transformed, Dan panicked. He had a flare gun and fired by reflex. The spark hit gasoline and… the rest you already know."
Diana took a deep breath, processing the information. She looked out the window for a moment, the wind outside rustling the trees.
"Okay. I don't know what I can do now. If it was an accident, how do you plan to handle this?"
Clark smiled slightly, his eyes still on the road.
"Me? I'm not a cop, Diana. All I can tell you is that you should focus on the caves."
Diana frowned, leaning toward him with curiosity.
"The caves? What's in them, Clark?"
Clark remained serene, shifting gears as the truck climbed a small hill.
"You'll find out. Trust me, Diana. What you're looking for—or rather, what will help you understand this case—is there."
Diana leaned back in her seat, arms crossed, her face now marked with determination.
"If there's something in the caves, I'll find it. And I hope this justifies your cryptic tone."
Clark let out a low chuckle but didn't respond.
Well, this should keep Diana occupied for now. Tomorrow, I'll talk to Lex about turning the site into a reserve.
Silence settled in the truck for a few moments, but the weight of the conversation seemed lighter now. Diana glanced at Clark out of the corner of her eye, still skeptical.
"You do this on purpose, don't you? You always know more than you say and make us figure it out on our own."
Clark gave a small smile, never looking away from the road.
"You learn more when you discover things for yourself, Diana. And besides, I know you like the challenge."
She rolled her eyes but couldn't hide a faint smirk.
"You're impossible, Clark. But for now, I'll let it slide."
The truck rolled down the road, its engine blending with the wind outside. Clark knew Diana would be occupied with the caves for a while, but he also knew he needed to ensure everything was safe before she got too far.
Diana glanced at him again, more relaxed now, but her eyes still filled with determination.
"When all this is over, Clark, I want a full explanation. No riddles."
Clark nodded slightly, his smile reassuring.
"Of course, Diana. When the time is right."
The engine's hum continued as they drove down the road, each lost in thought, ready for whatever came next.
