Chapter 4: Chapter Four - The Dragonov Family
I finally got confirmation that I am Katerina Petrova from the series after Natalia was born a year ago. I'm only 4 years old, but knowing that in 13 years I'll have to say 'Goodbye' to my family breaks my heart.
Mama is so kind, so patient, that I would give her the moon if I could. She's the mother I've always wished for, and now I have her... Of course, that doesn't mean she's never strict, but she's fair and always has the right words to help me see things from her perspective.
Tatko (which means Papa) is much stricter, but that's normal since we're living in 1473. The man's role is superior within the family—can't wait for that to change... Yet Tatko doesn't take advantage of this superiority; he treats Mama as his equal except when others outside the family are present. He's not violent, and he shows his love for us in his way.
Natalia is adorable, and I'm completely smitten with her. My very first little sister. For the first time in my life—or rather in both of my lives—I'm a big sister. In The Vampire Diaries, almost nothing is known about her, except that along with Sia, she helped Katherine give birth to her daughter. And that she too was killed by Klaus after Katherine escaped from him.
I don't want that to happen. I don't want us to die again because of me! Is it too much to ask to have my family with me forever? Please! I want Mama, Tatko, and Natalia to live. I've grown far too attached to them to lose them!
Unfortunately, I still don't have any ideas about how to avoid my encounter with Klaus or, for that matter, my death or the death of my family.
"Katerina, come! We're going to visit Adelia! Hurry up, Molya te (please)! Otherwise, I'm leaving without you!" Mama called, taking Natalia into her arms.
Today we were going to visit Mama's longtime friend, Adelia Dragonov. Adelia had been Mama's best friend since childhood. If Adelia learned something, you could be sure that within the hour, Mama knew it too, and vice versa. Two real gossipers!
Adelia also had children: Aleko, 6 years old, and Liliya, 3 years old. Personally, I didn't know them because Tatko didn't like the Dragonovs, and he didn't want me to associate with them.
But I'm curious.
From what Mama told Tatko, Aleko was quite the little rascal, a tiny terror who never stayed still for two minutes. Apparently, his angelic pout worked in his favor quite often, especially when his mischief went too far.
Liliya, on the other hand, was calmer. Mama said she was very skilled with her hands, whether it was sewing or weaving flower crowns. But she was also sensitive to magic, like her mother, who was a former Traveler. That's the reason Tatko didn't want me near the Dragonovs. He strictly forbade me from approaching Liliya, and it got even worse after Adelia and her husband decided to start training Liliya in magic.
Aleko didn't inherit his sister's abilities, so recently he had started learning swordplay and archery. According to Mama, he was doing quite well so far.
At first, I thought about asking Adelia to train me too, but if I did, Mama would find out, and so would Tatko. I didn't want to ruin Mama and Adelia's friendship. Because if Tatko found out that Adelia was teaching me Traveler magic, he would forbid Mama from seeing her friend again.
So, I'm still stuck when it comes to figuring out my future.
I wonder what the real Katherine's childhood was like… In The Vampire Diaries, we don't know much about her childhood, once again… Whether she had friends, whether she loved anyone… We don't even know who Nadia's father—her future daughter—was. Katherine's childhood is a mystery, and I'm really scared of making the same mistakes she did.
Not wanting to keep Mama waiting, I forced myself out of my thoughts, quickly smoothed down my dark brown dress, and followed her to the Dragonov house. Their home was almost identical to ours, with only a few differences.
For the first time, I was about to meet the two young Dragonovs. I had to admit I was nervous, but thankfully, they were just children… and I wasn't anymore.
As soon as we arrived, Adelia came running out of her house toward us.
"Sia, I'm so happy to see you! I've missed you! Oh, hello Katerina, you grow more velikolepen (magnificent) every day. At this rate, you'll surpass your Mama in beauty!" Adelia exclaimed cheerfully.
"Adelia, I've missed you too! Let me finally introduce Natalia!"
"Oh bozhe moĭ! (My God) She's so krasiv! (beautiful) Come, Sia, let's go inside—I don't want Natalia catching anything! Katerina, if you'd like, you can go join Liliya and Aleko. They're in the stable, I think!" Adelia finished as she led Mama inside with her.
And there we go! Tonight, we're going to hear all the village gossip and rumors!
In a way, I envied them a little. I'd love to have a friend too, someone I could tell everything to! Someone who wouldn't think I was weird or crazy. But in this body, there's no way I'd be able to make friends!
Katherine Pierce doesn't have friends throughout her entire life. She only has pawns or allies, but no one truly loves her. No one would sacrifice their life to protect her! No one would want to be her friend!
With those final, admittedly gloomy but reasonable, thoughts, I headed toward the stable as Adelia had suggested.
When I finally arrived at the stable, I immediately spotted a stunning mare with a brown coat and charcoal-black mane. Around her neck, there were various forest flowers woven into a beautiful braid.
Liliya paused her floral handiwork for just a moment when she saw me, only to immediately resume it and then turn away, royally ignoring me.
