Chapter 36: Chapter 35: Secret Exposed And Renewed Determination
Point of View Switch: Reader
In ring C of the 98th floor, Nicholas finds himself fighting a muscular man who uses a good mix of punches and kicks, trying to dodge him to accustom his body to combat. After a long controlled fight, Nicholas dodges a direct punch from his opponent, moving in a circle to the right side to sweep his legs out from under him and grab his free arm to pin him to the ground.
"Down!" The referee states raising a finger.
However, despite not having received a single attack in his two fights today, Nicholas walks with his face covered in bruises and his forehead bandaged.
Flashback to several hours ago.
Nicholas is sitting in the Seiza posture on the floor of Kai's room with his eyes frightened and his face much more bruised and bleeding while Kai watches him sitting with his arms crossed on his bed and displaying the same malevolent profile with which he entered the room.
"I see that urban myth that hard hits to the head make you forget recent memory is actually false." Kai says in a calm but evidently filled with rage and killing intent voice. "I think I should at least give you a chance to explain yourself before I pass sentence. Speak up!"
"W-Well, I-I was following your instructions to put my stuff in my backpack, a-a-and I thought it was a g-good idea to pack yours too, b-boss." Nicholas stutters, scared of what Kai might do to him next.
"Don't you think it's rather rude to snoop through someone's belongings without asking permission first? Besides, if I wanted that, I would have asked you before I left. Acting without thinking things through is risky not only for a Hunter, but for any kind of person." Kai states, with each of his statements piercing Nicholas like an arrow and making him feel more guilty.
"Y-You're right, boss! I'm sorry I acted so hastily! Although in my defense, I didn't expect to encounter something like that." Nicholas says changing from a scared tone to an intrigued one as he drifts his gaze to the book placed next to Kai on the bed.
"I knew you kept certain things to yourself, but I didn't imagine finding among your belongings that kind of book—Girls in cosplay and erotic dresses, autumn edition." At the mere mention of the title, Kai's face becomes filled with prominent veins and he releases an intense killing intent through his aura, making Nicholas sweat profusely in panic.
"Don't say the title out loud again! I don't want people to get the wrong idea about me because of this! And I don't have this kind of book with me for a whim, but because I use it as study material!" Kai shouts visibly enraged holding the moderately erotic magazine.
"Study material?" Nicholas asks confused with a drop of sweat.
"You may have forgotten it after three months apart, but it turns out that I am very sensitive to women! During the exam I could hardly get used to talking and maintaining physical contact, and when I found myself in an emotionally stimulating situation with one of them, nervousness clouded my mind and excitement almost took control of my body!" Kai yells reminding the particular "situations" he was involved in with Ponzu and Menchi.
"Having a condition like this is a very dangerous thing for a person! Not only do I run the risk of people starting to judge me and look at me with disgusting eyes, but there is also the threat that people want to take advantage of it and try to use it to coerce, manipulate or control me!"
"That's why I started researching about eroticism, studying the subject in depth, seeing what interested me and creating simulations in my mind to find the best way to get through different situations I might find myself in! All just to overcome a weakness!"
Kai's words, while questionable in essence, are mostly honest.

Flashback narrating the three months training:
During the hellish training I put myself through under Satotz's supervision, once a week I'd take a half hour of my study and planning time to sprint to Myjeeling, rummage through its shops, and buy the most appropriate erotic magazine for that particular moment in time. After obtaining it, I'd spend 15 or 20 minutes every day to observe and investigate the vast world of eroticism, and then I'd attempt to calm my arousal during my Nen and emotional balance training.
Although this might not seem like a big deal, for me it was a huge bummer. Despite never having had this problem in my old world, my body and mind are now incredibly vulnerable to the allure of women, causing these simple magazines to make me feel very hot and distracted by the images of women in erotic clothes and situations, and making it very difficult for me to calm down and clear my mind and aura in order to improve my balance and control.
Because of this, the training to better control my Nen and spirit became more arduous and slow, needing an hour in the first days to clear my mind and regain my composure so I could concentrate. However, despite the clear handicap this entailed for my growth, I diligently followed this procedure every day for three months.
After all, I'm not a fool, and I know all too well that giving in to lust can get you into huge problems. After all, there are quite a few cases where a men have found themselves in a detrimental situation for getting seduced by women. Whether it's due to controversy over consent, the threat of your intimacy being exposed, being blinded by their charm, or any other imaginable reason, giving in to arousal and lust can end up putting you in a very vulnerable position.
The existence of cameras and cell phones makes it even worse, as they can record images, audio and video that can be taken out of context, giving the other party a convenient and permanent tool to use against you. Even if you think about getting hold of them and deleting the evidence, they could have already copied and moved the data by then, making it a very difficult threat to confront.
And on top of all that, there's also the way people look at you when they find out you're interested in sex. The first time Satotz saw me looking at one of these magazines, although he tried to avoid showing it, I was able to see the aversion in his eyes, as if he were some kind of sexual lunatic that you have to stay away from. Although I've already received my fair share of disgusted looks for my actions, that look in Satotz eyes was 1000 times worse than all of them.
After all, no one likes to feel like people are judging them or are disappointed in them just because they have a strong sexual desire, and for a proud warrior like me, that kind of experience is far more painful and heartbreaking than any kind of physical discomfort.
That's why I did this peculiar training: to be able to remain impassive when faced with women's attempts to seduce me and thus not get myself into a reputation or situation that will be very difficult for me to get rid of later.
End of the flashback.
"Then you've been looking through erotic magazines and trying to overcome your sexual excitement for three months only so you can get over your problem with women?" Nicholas asks calmer and perplexed after hearing my explanation.
"Yes, that's right. I assume that now you understand how sensitive and damaging this information could be for me if someone were to find out about it, so I'm gonna ask you to please keep quiet on the matter." I say standing up and standing in front of him.
"Because if I ever find out that you've told anyone about what we've talked about in this room, I'll start you on a painful treatment of dislocating and repositioning the bones in your body to increase their strength and flexibility. Do you understand?" I ask with a sinister voice, giving Nicholas a murderous look and menacingly cracking my fingers.
As I anticipated, this approach immediately causes Nicholas to lose his newly regained composure and plunges him back into a nervous wreck as he answers. "Yes, yes, I get it boss! I'll never tell anyone about this! I swear it on my life!" Nicholas states waving his hands in panic.
Witnessing that Nicholas has finally understood how important it is for me to keep this matter confidential, I stop displaying a threatening attitude. "I'll take you at your word. Fine, now that we've cleared up this misunderstanding, I'll finish packing my things myself. In the meantime, you can go to the tower's reception to register as a fighter and try to advance to the 100th floor as soon as possible."
With this reassuring words, the strained atmosphere of the room dissipates, allowing Nicholas to relax and let out a sigh of relief before getting out as I have instructed him while I start picking up the things still scattered on the bed.

Still smarting from the scolding boss Kai gave me for messing with his private things, I start walking towards the fighters's waiting room. However, what occupies my mind the most as I head towards my destination is not the pain on my head or the anticipation for my next battle.
'I didn't imagine that the boss kept those kind of feelings inside of him.' I think to myself as I recap the explanation the boss has given me about his opinion on eroticism.
'It is true that ever since we met, the boss has shown a more nervous side when he found himself in situations related to women, and although I had always considered it something comical and unimportant, it seems that for the boss it was different. He considers something as natural and accepted as sexual desire to be a serious defect in his person that he has to fix at all costs to avoid being harmed.'
'Not only does this demonstrate his already well-known cautious personality, but it also introduces me to a new side of him: the fear of getting too close to people and being vulnerable.' As I think this, I open the door to the fighters's waiting room and take a seat.
'While the boss's reasoning on the issue isn't wrong, I don't like the mindset he's adopted. Trying to deny a primordial human part of himself, and closing himself off from the possibility of connecting with someone special out of a lack of trust in people will only end up hurting him in the future.'
As the thought of boss Kai sinking and isolating himself into darkness crosses my mind, from within me arises an overwhelming desire to prevent that from ever happening. 'I must stop that from happening!'
'The boss is a strong, attractive, kind, funny, intelligent and resourceful man! He is a compassionate soul who always gives his all to help people even if they are strangers, and has the will to always remain true to his principles despite the challenges that may appear before him! Such an amazing and wonderful man like him shouldn't end up alone in life!'
'So no matter how hard it is for me or the dangers it may entail, I must help the boss stay open to enjoying the pleasure of being human and make sure he doesn't end up alone and unloved! I will make the boss feel the delight of being with someone special no matter what!' I think clenching my fist with determined look set on my face.
Several minutes later, the loudspeaker announces my first fight of the day, and getting up with a consolidated ambition to help the boss burning in my chest, I leave the waiting room.

After Nicholas left, I started to gather all the things he had taken out of my bag to put them in my new backpack. After a few minutes I have put away everything I am not going to use for the moment, and turning on the TV I tune in to the battles Nicholas is going to have up to the 100th floor while doing the training to increase my Ren's capacity.
After a while, Nicholas finishes the battle for the 90th floor promotion, demonstrating his gradual improvement in hand-to-hand combat. "His body is getting better and better at fighting, his spatial analysis ability has improved greatly, and his intent is more intense when attacking. He still needs to polish it better and face a more extreme situation, but his growth is undeniable."
"Well, it'll probably be some time before he's called back to fight, so I'll take advantage of this time to multitask." I say reducing the aura output on my left arm and picking up my cell phone to call my still pending contacts.
This time there are 2 people who respond to me: Pokkle and Menchi.
—Apparently, Pokkle is still training the basic principles of Nen. According to him, his Ten is not yet firm enough, his Zetsu is not precise enough, and he has a hard time projecting and controlling his Ren. When he tells me this, the first thing I think of is that this is the kind of predicament talentless people find themselves in, so I ask him if he'd be interested in me helping him become stronger.
Obviously Pokkle is hesitant at first, wondering what I can do to help him, so I tell him that I'm an Emitter too, and that not only do I have a way for him to improve faster and better, but I can also give him ideas for developing his own Hatsu ability based on my studies of Nen (not mentioning that said information comes from another world).
Although a little wary, Pokkle eventually relents after I question him about how he intends to take on the dangerous monsters of the world if he doesn't have the necessary power, agreeing to talk again to discuss his future ability and arranging to meet again in the near future so I can provide him with the necessary support for his growt improvement.
—Menchi on the other hand is traveling through the Republic of Hass with a group of Hunters looking for anything exotic to put in her mouth. According to her, the rest of her team are not Gourmet Hunters, but other types of Hunters who accompany her on the journey seeking to satisfy their own interests.
For my part, I tell her how I have spent the last three months in isolation doing intensive Nen training with Satotz, and that now I am with Nicholas in Heavens Arena fighting to become Floor Masters and gain some reputation before serving as Blacklist Hunters.
Surprisingly, Menchi starts to criticize me about how I should have called her to help me train my Nen so she could guide me in the Gourmet Hunter profession, but I answer that I am not interested in being a Gourmet Hunter, and that I asked for Satotz as a teacher because he had followed me in the fourth phase and therefore was more qualified.
However, she starts to tease me by asking me in a stimulating tone if it was because I was afraid that she would try to seduce me again and I would be unable to contain myself like last time. Obviously I try to deny her accusations, but as I hear her describe in a sensual voice the ways she could motivate me to work harder and convince me to become a Gourmet Hunter, Menchi's beautiful face and figure flood my head, destabilizing my Ren.
Realizing my carelessness, I punch myself hard in the face, pulling myself out of the sea of carnal desires in which I was sinking, and regaining my control and composure I tell Menchi to stop trying to tease me with her jokes, to which she apologizes with a small laugh. We both continued talking a bit about our circumstances and goals, and after a while, we both hung up, agreeing to talk again in the future.
'It's good to know that you're doing well, although this last call shows that I still have a long way to go. I must continue to strive to improve and overcome the temptation of these harmful desires that torment my head and heart.' I think while controlling my breathing and refocusing on increasing the power and control of my Ren.
End of the flashback.
After finishing his fight and ascending to the 100th floor, Nicholas returns to my room in high spirits, but his joy quickly turns to stupor when he watches me sweating and releasing my Ren to the fullest extent of my efforts.
'This... This is the level of the boss. I can't even begin to compare myself to him.' Nicholas thinks, starting to sweat nervously as he is immersed in the powerful aura that fills the entire room.
"I've seen your fights. Have they given you the key to your private room yet?" I ask shifting my eyes to Nicholas still in the doorway.
"Ah, yes, they have. I have come her to inform you and start moving my things" He answers still aware of me as he shows me his new key.
"Good. Then get going and come back here when you're done so I can give you my review of your matches."
Nicholas nods at me and, nervous for my Ren, grabs his backpack and heads to his new place of stay. Several minutes later Nicholas returns to my room, and standing in front of him with my Ren still active, I begin to give him my opinion on his performance in his fights.
After a good while detailing the parts in which he has improved and those that he needs to improve, I finally deactivate my Ren after two hours of intense training, giving Nicholas a great exhale of relief with his face sweaty from the pressure he has experienced.
"Boss, why have you done this to me?! I thought my body was going to break under the pressure of your aura!" Nicholas shouts, showing an unusual annoyance towards me.
"It's better if you get used to the pressure of someone with a much more powerful aura than yours. Besides, it also serves as punishment for having snooped around in my private things." I respond firmly, quickly extinguishing the momentary irritation Nicholas has displayed.
"Well, it seems like it's getting a bit late. Since we'll both be living in Heavens Arena for now, how about we go out to eat at a restaurant in the service facilities?" I ask.
"Sounds good to me. After today, I'd rather eat out than order room service." Nicholas agrees with the idea, prompting me to take the lead to the recreation area generally used by spectators.
Once we get out of the elevator, we enter the service area, and as we pass through the hustle and bustle of people, I notice a color that seems all too familiar to me, forcing me to shout out loud at the coincidence: "Killua?!"
At my shout, the silver-haired boy turns his startled head in my direction. "Kai?! What are you doing here?!" He asks as I quickly close the distance between us.
"I could ask you the same thing. I heard from your brother that you had returned home in Kukuroo Mountain. You being here means Gon and the others succeeded in getting you back, right?" I ask, pretending to be oblivious to the events that have occurred him.
"Well, yes, although we had to part ways shortly after. I am currently in this tower along with Gon as a fighter on the 200th floor." Killua responds scratching his head with a tense smile.
"Really? And why isn't he with you then?" I ask curiously.
"He's decided to keep training instead of going out to eat with me, so I was thinking of checking out the food court and bring him something delicious to eat in his room." He responds, making me feel excited to have the opportunity to engage in friendly interactions with the protagonists again.
"That's great! I was also looking for a good place to eat with Nicholas. How about we catch up while we check out the place?"
Despite my cheerful tone of voice as I ask, Killua looks away nervously as he answers. "Uhm, you see, I wasn't planning on staying around here too long either. I just want to grab something soon and come back for dinner with Gon."
'I see you're still not completely over it, huh. I guess I'll have to give you a little push.' I think, trying to put on my haughtiest face possible. "Oh, I see. So the beating I gave you last time has left you so traumatized that you're now scared to be around me."
"Huh?! What do you think you're saying?! When are you supposed to have beaten me up?!" Killua asks instantly changing from nervous to annoyed.
"Oh, poor thing. The contusion was so severe that it seems to have wiped out your memory. Or maybe you're just feigning ignorance because you're too proud to admit your defeat. That would be pretty sad indeed." I say, feigning a condescending tone to irk Killua more.
"Shut up, you pervert! I wasn't myself at that time, so you can't count that fight!" He shouts, looking quite angry for my words.
"Good. Then that means you can't count it either, so you have no reason to refuse my invitation then, right?" I ask giving Killua a triumphant smile.
Having realized what I was up to, Killua's eyes widen as his anger disappears, being replaced by a resigned smile. "Alright, I'll accompany you. After all, I'm also looking forward to seeing Nicholas again after so long." He replies with a shrug.
"Great! Then let's get going!" I exclaim with a wide, happy smile as I begin to lead the way back to Nicholas.
