Chapter 104: Chapter 104
Obito trembled as he huddled in a corner, utterly bewildered. This was supposed to be his Kamui Space!
How could it have turned into some kind of public transportation hub where people came and went as they pleased?
His face darkened, eyes simmering with rage. How had his once-exclusive domain ended up like this?
When the flood of people finally dispersed, Obito decided to sneak into the Uchiha clan's territory. However, he quickly noticed that the barriers surrounding the Uchiha compound had been modified. If he tried to force his way in, it would undoubtedly alert the guards.
Cursing under his breath, he retreated to Konoha's outskirts. Carefully and quietly, he made his way toward the heart of the village, just like he had in the past.
Konoha's layout in this era wasn't as dense as it would be 11 years later. The Third Shinobi World War had recently ended, and the village's population had not yet fully recovered, leaving it less crowded than before.
This lack of activity allowed Obito to move freely through the village, though he still kept a low profile. Just as he was slipping through a corner toward Konoha's center, a group of genin from the Sand Village darted past above him, each carrying a garbage bag.
Obito froze, his mind reeling. Wait... Sand ninjas?
Was Konoha under attack?
But... were the attackers really genin lugging garbage around?
Peering out cautiously, Obito rubbed his eyes. The Sand ninjas were still there, and they weren't fighting—they were cleaning!
To make things even stranger, not far ahead, Obito spotted several genin from the Hidden Stone Village casually walking down the street. His brain felt like it was overheating.
Confused, Obito took a step forward, only to have someone tap him on the shoulder.
"Hey, buddy, move it! You're blocking the way!" said a genin from the Grass Village, dragging a cart loaded with weeds.
Obito staggered back, completely baffled, as the group from the Grass Village passed him, chatting along the way:
"When can we start getting factory assignments too?"
"Don't even think about it. Only Konoha genin get those. You're lucky we even have this D-rank mission. Konoha pays way more than other villages for the same work."
"I mean, Konoha isn't even a ninja village anymore. They're more like merchants. Wouldn't it be amazing if our village became like that too?"
"Dream on. Konoha can afford to break away from the Fire Daimyo because they're so powerful. If we tried that, we'd get obliterated by the Daimyo in no time."
"Well, at least with Konoha no longer taking missions, there's less competition for us. I heard they're even selling summoning contracts now! Can you imagine? Selling summoning beasts to other villages?!"
"Yeah, but those beasts cost a fortune to maintain. Only wealthy genin can afford them."
"Still, can you name another village that would sell summoning contracts? Usually, those are family treasures! Konoha really doesn't play by the old rules anymore."
Obito stood there, dumbfounded, as the Grass ninjas disappeared into the distance.
What happened to this place?
Before he could make sense of it, an Anbu agent suddenly appeared beside him. Obito tensed, ready to kill the intruder with Kamui, but instead, the Anbu shoved a pamphlet into his hand.
"This is the Konoha Visitor's Guide. Follow the rules in there, and you'll be fine," the Anbu said impatiently before disappearing.
Obito blinked in confusion and glanced at the pamphlet in his hand. Opening it, the first page was filled with bold rules:
1. No violence is allowed.
2. If you face unfair treatment, report to the Urban Management Brigade.
3. Do not trespass into private properties.
4. Ninja from different villages must not engage in conflicts.
Flipping to the next page, Obito was greeted by advertisements:
"Pre-sale of exclusive summoning beasts starts soon—reserve your spot now!"
"Special discounts at Otsutsuki Ichiraku Ramen Shop!"
"20% off at Tenten's Basic Ninja Tools Store!"
The brochure was packed with promotions and ads.
Obito's eye twitched. How had Konoha, the proud ninja village, turned into a glorified tourist destination?
Still in shock, he stumbled into Konoha's bustling commercial district. Familiar yet surreal, the streets and buildings felt like a strange, dreamlike version of his memories.
"Kakashi! Stop wasting your time with side jobs. Just rent out the house your father left you—it's more than enough to live on. Come on, let's have a fateful duel!"
"No, not interested. Go away," replied a silver-haired ninja walking ahead of a green-clad one.
Obito froze, his anger flaring. That was Kakashi—his Kakashi—walking away with Might Guy.
At this point, Konoha's ninja had three career paths:
1. Freelance work, taking on missions independently without ties to the village.
2. Factory jobs under the Uchiha clan, which offered steady hours, paid time off, benefits, and a guaranteed salary.
3. Joining the Urban Management Brigade, a group tasked with maintaining order in the village amid the influx of people.
The influx of foreign ninjas and travelers had led to an increase in petty crimes, forcing the Urban Management Brigade to adopt stricter measures. Sarutobi Asuma, who led the brigade, had earned a fearsome reputation for his uncompromising enforcement.
Despite the negative image, the brigade offered high pay, and its members wore masks to protect their identities, allowing them to lead normal lives outside of work.
Obito wandered through the streets, his confusion and frustration mounting. This wasn't the Konoha he knew.
Konoha… what have you become?
