Reborn into a World Without Us

Chapter 6: Chapter 5: The Need for Exploration

After six years in this world, Alex Greid had transformed his existence from mere survival to a thriving, innovative lifestyle. The progress he had made was nothing short of remarkable, particularly in the realms of mining, metallurgy, and technology. His initial struggles had evolved into a series of triumphs, driven by relentless curiosity and ingenuity.

Alex's efforts in mining had yielded significant results. Over the years, he discovered and harnessed a variety of metals previously unknown to him in this world. Aluminum, nickel, chromium, copper, and tin were among the metals he unearthed, each adding a new dimension to his expanding technological prowess. The discovery of crude oil marked a pivotal moment. With this newfound resource, he constructed a refinery from scratch, a noteworthy achievement given the limited resources at his disposal. The refinery enabled him to produce various fuels and by-products, which, in turn, spurred further advancements.

With crude oil available, Alex focused on creating an internal combustion engine. Using aluminum, copper, and other materials, he crafted an engine that powered a new addition to his toolkit: the induction furnace. This furnace, constructed with copper and clay for refractory ceramics, featured a water cooling system to maintain operational efficiency. The induction furnace revolutionized his ability to produce steel, allowing him to make high-quality steel alloys, including tungsten. Tungsten, known for its high melting point, proved invaluable for lighting.

The advancements did not stop there. Alex applied his new technologies to agriculture. The internal combustion engine powered irrigation systems across his rice paddies, gardens, and other plantations. He even built harvesting and milling machines, streamlining the rice production process. His improvements extended beyond farming; he established a small textile factory for producing abaca clothing, utilizing the refined products from his crude oil refinery, including plastic.

Alex's home underwent a significant transformation. With the advent of steel rebars, he constructed a sturdy three-story house. The internal combustion engine provided the power needed for a comprehensive electrical system. Copper wiring and tungsten light bulbs illuminated his home, eliminating the need for candles and torches. Glass windows, another innovation, allowed natural light to lighten his living space. He also established a small glass factory, tailored to his needs, marking a testament to his growing capabilities.

As he lay back on his couch, Alex's mind wandered through the details of his recent achievements, each accompanied by his musings and trivia.

"Crude oil extraction is fascinating," he mused. "It's a natural resource formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient marine organisms. The process of refining it into various products, like gasoline and diesel, involves separating the different hydrocarbons through distillation. The refinery I built uses a simple distillation method to separate the oil into useful components."

He chuckled to himself, reflecting on his journey with metallurgy. "Metallurgy is the science of extracting and processing metals. The induction furnace, which I made, uses electromagnetic induction to heat the metal, allowing for more precise temperature control. This furnace is crucial for producing high-quality steel and alloys."

"Speaking of which," Alex continued, "the internal combustion engine was a game-changer for me. It's a machine that converts fuel into mechanical energy through combustion. Using aluminum and other materials, I managed to build an engine that powers various machines, like the irrigation system."

He paused, considering the significance of tungsten. "Tungsten's unique property is its extremely high melting point, making it ideal for lighting. It was a bit of a challenge to get it right, but now I have a reliable source of light in my home."

Alex turned his thoughts to glass production. "Glass is made from silica, soda, and lime, and it's melted at high temperatures. My small glass factory produces glass windows, which not only allow natural light to brighten my home but also add a touch of modernity."

"Abaca clothing is another interesting development," he said, adjusting his comfortable spot. "Abaca fibers are strong and durable, perfect for making textiles. I set up a small textile factory to process the fibers into clothing. It's not just practical; it's also a way to use the resources I have efficiently."

He then considered the advances in electrical wiring and lighting. "Electrical wiring has revolutionized how I live. With copper wiring, I can now power my entire house with electricity. Tungsten light bulbs have replaced candles and torches, making my home brighter and more comfortable."

As he continued reflecting on his achievements, Alex realized how far he had come from his initial days of struggle. "From basic survival to building sophisticated technology and modernizing my home, it's been quite a journey. I've turned a wilderness into a place of innovation and comfort. But now, the curiosity about whether I'm truly alone in this world is growing stronger."

As he contemplated his next steps, Alex knew that exploring beyond his familiar domain was necessary. He had achieved so much, but the thought of discovering if there were others out there was too compelling to ignore.

"Maybe it's time," Alex mused, "to see if there's anyone else out there. I've done so much here, but I still wonder if I'm the only one left in this world."

He pondered the logistics of the voyage. A ship capable of carrying enough supplies for an extended journey was essential. Though he hadn't yet built the ship, he had the tools and resources required. With the power of his internal combustion engine, the ship would have the necessary horsepower.

"If this is indeed the Philippines that I know, then maybe I'm somewhere isolated. The technology I've developed might be enough to take me further than the confines of my current place."

Before setting out, Alex focused on practical preparations. He needed to build a ship capable of withstanding the journey and storing enough provisions. This would be a significant project, but his confidence in his abilities was unwavering.

As he considered his plans, Alex recognized the importance of a proper meal and rest. He prepared a comforting dinner: chicken soup, enriched with herbs he had grown, and a refreshing mango juice. The simple pleasure of a home-cooked meal was a welcome respite after a day filled with complex tasks.

After dinner, Alex took a relaxing bath and reflected on his journey so far. The contrast between his past life and his current existence was striking. From a life of convenience and modernity to one of manual labor and innovation, his transformation was profound.

Lying in bed, he thought about the tasks ahead. "Tomorrow's going to be busy. I need to start on the ship and get everything ready for the voyage. It's a big step, but it's necessary to see if there's more to this world than what I've experienced so far."

As he drifted off, Alex felt a deep sense of satisfaction. "These six years have been a testament to what can be achieved with determination and creativity. But now, as I prepare for the next phase—exploration—I can't help but wonder what lies beyond the horizon. There's so much more to discover, and I'm ready to see where this adventure leads."

In the quiet of the night, Alex Greid's thoughts were filled with hope and curiosity. The path ahead was uncertain, but with each passing day, he was more prepared to face whatever lay beyond the horizon.

The following days would be dedicated to constructing the ship and preparing for his journey. The knowledge he had gained and the technologies he had developed would be put to the test as he ventured beyond his familiar territory. Alex was determined to uncover the mysteries of this world and, perhaps, find evidence that he was not alone.
