Trusting Yubelluna to deal with the nearest guard as he began silently screaming for help, I conjured three fiery swords in the air before me.
I sent them flying forward with a gust of Wind, six flaming tendrils following in their wake. I stepped outside the silencing field to hear how much noise we caused as I sent my tendrils out.
Each of the swords found their marks, striking home with the sound of a butcher cleaving through a boar. My tendrils quickly lashed around the guard's bodies and mouths, keeping them from screaming. Clapping my hands together, I crushed the bodies in my fire whips.
The fire passed through them like a knife through butter. They were dead before they even knew they were being attacked.
I used my tendrils to retrieve their bodies and weapons while I turned around. While my killing of the three guards had been relatively clean, Yubelluna obviously had some issues.
The stone floor lay in ruins around her. The door to the storeroom was nothing but splinters now. She had to get violent to keep the guard from getting out of Clarissa's sphere of silence.
No sound was made, but anyone who walked through here would know something was very wrong. There was nothing we could do about it now.
I abandoned my efforts to hide the guard's bodies and weapons and turned to Clarissa.
The witch pulled a wooden arrow from a pocket in her cloak and held it in her palm. A spell circle lit under the arrow, causing it to float in the air.
The arrow spun lazily around, coming to rest sixty degrees into the wall of the right corridor.
I nodded to my queen and bishop, and the three of us took off running down the right hall. Stealth was meaningless now. The moment someone happened upon the destruction in the hallway the entire manor would be bearing down on us.
Clarissa followed behind me, the arrow still floating above the spell circle in her hand. The arrow's point slowly moved more to the left as we progressed down the hallway.
We came to an intersection, but the arrow was still too angled to take the left turn. Unfortunately, the intersection was occupied.
There were three more figures. Two were obviously more guards, but the third was shorter. The young boy was swinging a wooden sword around to the amusement of his companions when we entered the intersection.
The guards reacted immediately, charging towards us screaming, "Intruders!"
"Yube!"
My queen stepped forward and the hallway exploded. The two guards were blasted into the walls, their spears falling uselessly to the ground.
Drawing my sword, I rushed to the nearest one, rearing back to strike. My hand stilled when I saw the wide-eyed fearful gaze of the young boy. He was shaking in terror, looking disbelievingly between my sword and the man who'd been laughing with him just moments earlier.
My bleeding heart was going to get us killed.
Rather than skewering the guard, I slammed the hilt of my sword into his head hard enough to send his entire body sliding five feet. Moving quickly, I did the same to the other guard, stopping Yubelluna from slagging him. I didn't want the kid to watch me gut these two, so I used Batman maiming logic. Our cover was blown anyway.
I felt a tingling against my mind as my sword spoke in amusement.
Mercy. A devil showing mercy.
Not the time! I screamed back in my mind, dragging Clarissa and Yubelluna down the hall the arrow was pointing.
There were sounds of activity and shouting as every guard in the area moved towards the sound of Yubelluna's explosion.
"Clarissa! How much further!" I demanded, sprinting at the head of our group.
"Forty feet!"
Ten steps after she'd said that, we came to another left turn. This time the arrow was practically parallel to the wall. The three of us flew down the left passage, shouts and footfalls approaching from behind and ahead of us.
I saw a door set into the right wall of our current hall. The arrow above Clarissa's hand was pointing right to it. A contingent of guards was charging down the hall from the opposite end, trying to beat us to it.
"Yube, the door!" I yelled, conjuring two spell circles to pull a flaming wall of Hellfire into being in front of us. I thrusted my arm forward, propelling the wall traveled down the hall with a blast of Wind.
I caught a glimpse over my shoulder of Clarissa throwing a handful of small animal carvings towards a group of guards coming up behind us. A spark of magic later and the knuckle-sized carvings enlarged to the size of their actual animals and animated. Wooden birds, cats, dogs, raccoons and more carved into the oncoming guards with magically-enhanced talons, claws and teeth.
While Clarissa and I stalled, Yubelluna managed to get to the door. She placed her hands against each of the three hinges and blew them apart, destroying the lock once they were in pieces. The door fell inward, creating a path for us to enter through.
As she turned to motion us through, a shadow peeled off the wall next to her. It elongated into a humanoid shape and lashed out towards her with a gleaming piece of sharpened metal.
I moved to assist her, but I wouldn't make it in time. I had never been more thankful as I was at that moment for insisting Yubelluna increase her physical combat skills.
When I first made her my queen, I'd told her she had to take up some form of physical combat. She had excelled at her chosen form, but it was drastically outshined by her explosive magic; it rarely saw use. It saw use then.
Yubelluna spun around the blade, slapping the attacking arm with her open palm as she did. Planting her foot, she stepped into a punch that connected with the shadow's stomach region. A spell circle ignited around her fist and the shadow exploded.
