Reborn As Millicas Gremory

Chapter 2: Celebration At Gremory Hall

Chapter 2:

That one-month grounding had been nothing short of miserable. The kind of suffocating boredom where time seemed to stretch endlessly, each second dragging on as if the universe itself had decided to test his patience. Every day was a reminder of missed opportunities, and the weight of wasted time hung over him like a cloud. Training plans, both for himself and Shirone, had been completely derailed. It frustrated him to no end-there was so much he wanted to accomplish, so much progress left untouched, all because he had been confined to his room like a little kid which he technically was.

He could still hear the stern lectures from his father, the shrill voice of his mother, the disappointed looks from his grandfather, and the silent, judging and jealous stares from Rias, who couldn't hide her irritation over Shirone joining his peerage instead of hers. His whole family had turned his grounding into a lesson, one he had grown tired of hearing by the end of the first week. The looks from Rias especially got under his skin every time she glanced at Shirone, Millicas could feel the subtle resentment bubbling beneath her composed exterior. But that was her problem, not his.

Despite the drudgery, there had been one small solace throughout the ordeal: Shirone. Introducing her to her new life as a devil wasn't as fulfilling as he had hoped, but even the little moments they shared were worth something. She was quiet, reserved, and still adjusting to her new surroundings, but she had a sweetness to her that Millicas found strangely comforting. And then, there was her love for sweets.

He hadn't expected it, but the way her eyes lit up whenever he offered her a piece of chocolate was nothing short of adorable. It was a side of her that most people wouldn't get to see, the small smile that tugged at her lips when she thought no one was watching. It made him smile too, knowing that despite everything she had been through, there were still things that brought her happiness.

Now, thankfully, the grounding was over. His time of confinement had finally come to an end, and he was free to do as he pleased once more and he was eager to make up for lost time.

His first priority was training however there was an issue. The Gremory family was hosting a party in a week to celebrate his receiving of the Evil Piece Set. Technically, he had received them a year ago but that had been kept secret. Now though thanks to the formal announcement a celebration would be held. It would be a grand affair, as all events hosted by his grandparents were, filled with noble devils from across the Underworld. Millicas wasn't particularly excited about the fanfare, but he understood the importance of the event. The Gremory name held weight, and the party would be a chance to solidify his place in the future of the clan and as The Son of Lucifer.

He'd have to put on his best face, play the part of the young noble devil, and charm the guests with practiced grace. Politics were woven into every moment of these gatherings, and Millicas knew how critical it was to make the right impression. He knew that parties like these weren't just about formalities they were an opportunity. A chance to forge alliances with other heirs of noble families, to build connections that would serve him well in the future. He needed allies, and this was the perfect place to start building those relationships, with other children who would one day hold powerful positions in the underworld.

Millicas paced back and forth in his room, deep in thought. The upcoming celebration, hosted by his grandparents, would be his official introduction into the world of noble devils. He would meet heirs from other prestigious families, and it was an opportunity to make critical alliances. However, one issue loomed in his mind: Shirone.

While she was now a part of his peerage, her reputation remained tied to her sister, Kuroka, whose betrayal was still a fresh wound in the minds of many devils. Shirone would not be welcomed with open arms at such an event. The party was meant to be a night of status and power, a display of the future of the devil world. If he brought Shirone, it could stir unnecessary tension, and he wasn't sure she was ready for the kind of disdain that might be directed her way.

He sighed and resolved to speak with her. He didn't want to hurt her feelings, but she needed to understand why attending this particular party might not be in her best interest. He walked towards her room before pushing the doors open and entering her room.

"Shirone?" he called gently.

She lay on her bed in her room quietly, her ears twitching in curiosity, golden eyes wide as she gazed up at him. Even now, there was still a reservedness in her, as if she wasn't fully sure she belonged in this world or with him in his peerage.

Millicas gestured for her to sit. "There's something I need to discuss with you."

Shirone sat down obediently, her small frame perched on the edge of the chair. She tilted her head slightly, waiting for him to speak.

"As you know, there's a celebration next week," Millicas began, choosing his words carefully. "It's for my Evil Pieces ceremony. A lot of important devils will be there, heirs of noble families, influential people." He paused, trying to gauge her reaction.

Shirone nodded slowly but said nothing, her expression unreadable.

"I was thinking…" He hesitated, not wanting to sound harsh. "It might be best if you didn't attend this one."

Her eyes flickered with something maybe confusion, maybe hurt—but her voice was quiet. "Why?"

Millicas sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "You're part of my peerage now, Shirone, and I value you. But the truth is, not everyone sees you the way I do. Many devils still remember your sister and what she did. If you show up at a gathering like this, it might cause... problems. People might look at you unfairly."

Shirone's ears flattened slightly, and for a moment, he thought he had hurt her more than he intended.

"I just want to protect you from that," he added quickly. "It's not about you—it's about how they'll treat you. You don't deserve that."

There was a long pause. Shirone's eyes narrowed slightly, her tail flicking behind her as if she were processing what he had said. Then, unexpectedly, she spoke with a quiet determination. "If I don't attend now, when will I ever be ready to face other devils?"

Millicas blinked, surprised by her words. "Shirone... it's not about you being ready. It's about them."

"But I'm already your pawn, aren't I?" she countered, her voice still soft but firm. "I can't hide forever because of what my sister did. If I don't start facing these people now, I'll never get past their stares. They'll always see me as Kuroka's little sister unless I prove otherwise."

Her words struck a chord in Millicas. She wasn't wrong. If she kept hiding, if he kept sheltering her, she would always be seen as the girl tied to her sister's crime. She needed to stand on her own two feet.

Millicas sat down beside her, meeting her gaze. "I understand, but it's still risky. These people can be cruel."

Shirone's expression softened, and for the first time, a small smile appeared on her lips. "I won't go as Shirone, then."

He raised an eyebrow, confused. "What do you mean?"

"I'll go by a different name," she explained, her tail swishing thoughtfully behind her. "A new name. A fresh start, like you said. That way, I won't be seen as Kuroka's sister. I'll be someone new."

Millicas leaned back, considering her words. A new name could indeed help her. It wouldn't erase the past, but it might help to distance her from it. He mulled it over for a moment longer before nodding. "Alright. What name do you have in mind?"

"Koneko," she said, the name rolling off her tongue softly but with confidence. "Koneko Toujou."

"Koneko," Millicas repeated, letting the name settle. It was fitting. "Toujou, huh?"

Shirone-no, Koneko nodded. "It means 'little kitten.' It suits me, don't you think?"

Millicas chuckled, finally relaxing. "Yeah, it suits you perfectly."

The tension in the room seemed to dissipate, and Millicas found himself smiling. "Okay, Koneko. You'll attend the party, but we'll introduce you under your new name. Just... stick close to me, alright?"

Koneko nodded eagerly. "I will."

Millicas left her room feeling somewhat relieved after his conversation with Koneko. He still marvelled at how naturally she had come up with the same name that she had in the original story—Koneko Toujou. It was as if fate was nudging things back on track, regardless of the twists and turns. But now, there was another matter he needed to address—one that was far less enjoyable: talking to his mother, Grayfia.

Grayfia Lucifuge, the Silver-Haired Queen of Annihilation, wasn't just any devil. She was the strongest queen in existence and had incredibly high standards for etiquette, formality, and conduct. On top of that, she was still upset with him for his little "excursion" when he went to save Koneko. He had already endured a month of grounding, but that didn't necessarily mean she was over it.

Still, if Koneko was going to attend the upcoming celebration, she needed to be properly trained in devil nobility etiquette, and there was no one better for that than his mother. He braced himself as he approached her private office, where she often dealt with her responsibilities as the Gremory household's Head Maid and manager of its affairs.

He knocked gently on the door. "Mother?"

There was a brief pause before her calm voice responded. "Enter."

Millicas opened the door and stepped inside, immediately sensing the formality of the room. Grayfia sat behind her desk, her silver hair perfectly in place, her back straight, and her expression as unreadable as ever. Her red eyes met his, and for a moment, neither of them spoke. The air felt heavy his mother had a way of making you feel like every word carried weight.

"Millicas," she said, setting aside the document she had been reviewing. "Is there something you need?"

Millicas inhaled deeply. "Yes. It's about the upcoming celebration." He hesitated for a moment but then decided it was best to just say it. "I'd like for Koneko—formerly Shirone—to attend the party. And for her to do so, she'll need etiquette lessons."

Grayfia's expression didn't change, but he noticed a flicker of something in her eyes—disapproval, maybe. She placed her hands neatly on the desk and raised an eyebrow slightly.

"I see. And you're certain that it's wise for her to attend, given her... history?" There was no malice in her voice, but the tone was coldly pragmatic, as Grayfia always was.

Millicas knew this was coming. He had expected her to challenge the idea. "I believe it is. She's part of my peerage now, Mother. She needs to be present at events like these if she's ever going to gain acceptance. Hiding her away will only make things worse."

Grayfia leaned back slightly, her gaze never leaving his. "Millicas, you understand that people will not easily forget her past. Her sister's actions have stained her reputation and, by extension, the Gremory name. I am not opposed to her redemption, but the nobility is not forgiving. Even if she is introduced under a different name, her mere presence will cause whispers."

"I know," Millicas responded firmly. "But I've already spoken to her about it. We've decided she'll attend under the name Koneko Toujou. She understands what's at stake, and she's willing to face it."

Grayfia was silent for a long moment, her expression thoughtful as she studied her son. Finally, she sighed softly and stood up from her desk, walking over to him with graceful, deliberate steps. She stopped in front of him, her gaze softening just a fraction.

"You've always been stubborn, just like me," she said quietly, almost fondly. "But you must understand, Millicas, that the world you are stepping into is harsh. It will not coddle you, and it will not spare her." She paused before adding, "You are playing with more than just your reputation you're playing with the reputation of your father and the entire house."

Millicas met her gaze with determination. "I understand, Mother. But I believe in Koneko. She deserves a chance to prove herself."

Grayfia sighed again, a rare gesture for her. She crossed her arms, thinking for a moment before speaking. "Very well. If this is what you truly wish, I will teach her."

Millicas exhaled a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. "Thank you, Mother."

"But," Grayfia added sternly, raising a finger. "If she falters, it will reflect poorly on you. You must be prepared for that."

Millicas nodded. "I am."

Grayfia looked past him, her eyes distant for a moment, as if considering something deeper. "There is much more to being part of a noble house than simply attending parties. If you are to be an active member of this family, you must be prepared for the weight that comes with that role."

Millicas nodded again, this time more solemnly. He understood that now more than ever.

Grayfia stepped closer and gently placed a hand on his shoulder, her usual coldness giving way to a rare moment of maternal warmth. "I will train her, but I expect nothing less than perfection."

"I'll make sure of it," Millicas replied.

Grayfia pulled back, her regal composure returning almost immediately. "Good. I will begin her lessons tomorrow. You are dismissed."

Millicas turned to leave but then hesitated. He glanced back at his mother. "Mother?"

Grayfia raised an eyebrow. "Yes?"

"Thank you for trusting me."

A faint, almost imperceptible smile crossed her lips before she returned to her desk to manage further paperwork for the house and for his father. "Don't make me regret it, Millicas."

With that, Millicas left to inform Koneko about the developments, but as he passed by the Lord's Study, he caught snippets of conversation that made him stop in his tracks. He leaned in closer to the door, as his heart pounded as he pressed his ear closer to the door, listening to the conversation unfolding within the study. His grandfather's voice was full of excitement, brimming with joy in a way that almost felt contagious.

But not to Millicas not now.

"We can finalize the details today," his grandfather said, his words dripping with enthusiasm. "This will be an excellent match. Think of the advantages! Their union will solidify our alliance and ensure prosperity for generations to come."

Millicas clenched his fists. The idea of marriage wasn't something he had given much thought to before, but the very concept of an arranged marriage now upset him. He didn't want his life dictated by alliances and politics. As the son of Lucifer, he had dreams of forging his path, free from such constraints. Of course, he would marry a Devil from a noble family but he had always wished to choose and never wished to be bartered away.

Then Lord Phenex's voice entered the mix, as deep and self-assured as ever. "Indeed! Our financial standing is unmatched in the underworld, and aligning our houses would only enhance our influence. The Phenex name carries weight, and the Gremory name is no less powerful. Together, they will be unstoppable. On top of that, Rias and Riser will be an amazing match."

Millicas's mind froze for a moment, the words sinking in like cold water. The marriage contract wasn't for him—it was for Rias. His heart raced as he realized he wasn't the one being bartered for. A wave of relief washed over him, though it was tinged with something else: satisfaction. Rias would be the one to suffer.

"Rias will understand the benefits," his grandfather continued as if reading from a script of noble tradition. "It's a prestigious match. We must present it in a way that emphasizes the advantages, especially with Riser's potential."

"Absolutely," Lord Phenex said with a smirk, his voice thick with pride. "Rias may have her reservations now, but she will see reason. After all, it's not just about love; it's about our Clans' power and security."

"Indeed," his grandfather responded, nodding in agreement. "Rias has always been pragmatic. She'll do what's best for the family."

Millicas couldn't suppress the small, triumphant grin that tugged at the corners of his mouth. This was perfect. Rias, his aunt, with all her arrogance and self-importance, would be shackled to someone just as insufferable. He found a sense of justice in it Riser Phenex, with his arrogant personality, was exactly the kind of person Rias deserved.

Millicas wasn't heartless. He knew marriages like this were the norm in the devil world, especially for noble families. But Rias had always fancied herself above such things, always acting as though she could find love, regardless of the family's needs. This would be a rude awakening for her.

Feeling oddly pleased by the development, Millicas continued down the hallway. He still had to inform Koneko about the news, but his mind was elsewhere, turning over the possibilities that this marriage contract opened up. If Rias was tied to Riser Phenex, she would have less time and less leverage to interfere in his affairs. That meant he could focus on his own goals, training, and building his peerage without her meddling.

Pushing open the door, he found her sitting quietly, her eyes closed in meditation.

"Koneko," he called, interrupting her thoughts.

She blinked her eyes open and looked up at him, her face as neutral as ever. "Millicas. What is it?"

"I've just overheard something important," he began, his tone half-serious, half-amused. "It looks like Rias is going to be married to Riser Phenex."

Koneko tilted her head slightly, confusion flitting across her usually calm face. "Rias? Married to Riser? Isn't that a bit... sudden?"

Millicas smirked, crossing his arms. "It's all political, of course. Lord Phenex and my grandfather are finalizing the marriage contract as we speak. They think it'll strengthen the alliance between our houses."

Koneko remained quiet for a moment, absorbing the information. "And you're... okay with this?"

"More than okay," Millicas replied, a chuckle escaping him. "If anything, I'm glad. Rias has always been so focused on competing with me, maybe now she'll be too preoccupied with her marriage to bother with me."

Koneko gave him a long look, her expression unreadable. "I see. So you think this will keep her from interfering in your plans."

"That's exactly what I think," Millicas said with a grin. "With her out of the way, I'll have more room to focus on my training and much more freedom helping you adjust to your new life. We've got a lot to do, and I don't need Rias breathing down my neck."

Koneko nodded slowly, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Well, if it gives you more freedom, then I guess it's a good thing."

Millicas shrugged, leaning against the doorframe. "It's not just about freedom. It's about finally being able to have something she doesn't. Freedom. Rias has always acted like she's the only one who matters in this family. Let her deal with Riser's ego for a while maybe then she'll understand what it's like to be bothered in such a way.

Koneko gave a small hum of agreement. "You think they'll be a good match?"

Millicas laughed softly. "Oh, they'll be perfect for each other. Riser is arrogant, just like her. They can spend the rest of their lives trying to screw each other over. Meanwhile, we'll be over here, working on becoming stronger."

Koneko smiled at that, her eyes warm. "Sounds like a plan."

As Millicas left Koneko's room, he couldn't help but feel a sense of victory. Rias's future was sealed. As Millicas left Koneko's room, a feeling of triumph settled in his chest.

Rias's future was sealed—her path tied to Riser Phenex, and Millicas couldn't be more satisfied with the outcome. However, that satisfaction came with a note of caution.

The realization hit him: if his grandfather was capable of arranging a marriage for Rias, what was stopping him from doing the same to him in the future? The political ties between noble devil families were strong, and marriage contracts were one of the most effective ways to consolidate power and alliances. Millicas knew that if he wasn't careful, his own marriage could very well become another pawn in his family's connection building especially because he still was not the heir.

The thought unsettled him.

Rias had little say in her own marriage contract, and while Millicas wasn't particularly fond of his aunt, he understood the frustration she must would be feeling. But in his case, he wasn't going to sit idly by. If he wanted to control his own future his destiny he would need to approach his grandfather soon, to ensure that he had a say in any such arrangement regarding his own marriage.

Making a mental note to bring this up carefully, he waited till he knew Lord Phenex had left before he headed towards the study where he had overheard the conversation. His steps were heavy with weight and worry he knew he couldn't approach his grandfather with arrogance or rashness. His grandfather, Lord Gremory, was not only the head of the house but a man who valued tradition. Millicas had to play this strategically, to position himself as someone capable of making these decisions for himself.

Pushing open the study door, Millicas found his grandfather sitting at his grand desk, shuffling through papers, still looking pleased from his conversation with Lord Phenex.

"Millicas, my boy," his grandfather greeted, his jovial voice as warm as ever. "Come in. What brings you here?"

Millicas stepped inside, trying to gauge the mood of the room before speaking. He bowed his head slightly as a sign of respect before approaching the desk.

"Grandfather," he began, choosing his words carefully, "I overheard your conversation with Lord Phenex earlier. I know about the marriage contract."

His grandfather's expression shifted slightly, curiosity filling his eyes. "Ah, so you know about Rias and Riser then," he said, leaning back in his chair. "It's an excellent match, don't you think? It will bring great power and security to both houses."

Millicas nodded. "Yes, I understand the importance of such alliances. But… it made me think about my future."

Lord Gremory raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued by where this conversation was going. "Oh? And what is it about your future that concerns you, Millicas?"

Taking a deep breath, Millicas continued, "I'm not opposed to the idea of a marriage alliance in principle. I know it's part of our world, especially for someone in my position. But I would like to have a say in who I marry."

A heavy silence hung in the room for a moment as his grandfather regarded him carefully. His expression softened, but his eyes remained sharp, studying his grandson's resolve.

"You're thinking ahead, I see," his grandfather finally said, his voice measured. "That's good. Most young devils wouldn't even consider such matters until it's too late. But you're right marriages in noble houses aren't about love, they're about power, connections, and maintaining the strength of the bloodline."

Millicas nodded, standing firm. "I understand that, but I want the opportunity to choose someone who can help me, not just politically, but personally. Someone I can trust."

His grandfather leaned forward slightly, his fingers steepled under his chin. "And you think you're ready to make such a decision?"

Millicas straightened his back, looking his grandfather directly in the eyes. "I may be young, but I've grown up watching the moves of powerful families. I understand the stakes. And I believe, with proper consideration, I can make a choice that benefits the Gremory name just as much as it benefits me personally."

For a moment, his grandfather was silent, tapping his fingers thoughtfully on the desk. Then, a slow smile spread across his face, one of approval.

"I see the makings of a true leader in you, Millicas," Lord Gremory said. "You're thinking like someone who understands the long game. Very well. I won't force a marriage contract on you without your input. But know this when the time comes, the decision will still need to serve the interests of our family."

Millicas allowed himself a small breath of relief. It wasn't a complete victory, but it was enough. He had secured a say in his future, and that was more than he could have asked for before.

"I understand," Millicas said, his voice steady. "And I won't let you down when that time comes."

His grandfather chuckled softly. "I expect nothing less. Now go, Millicas. You have much to prepare for with the celebration coming soon."

Millicas nodded and bowed once more before leaving the study. As the door closed behind him, he exhaled slowly, his mind racing with thoughts of the future. This was just one step in a much larger game. He had won a small victory today, but the path ahead was long and filled with challenges. But if there was one thing Millicas was certain of, it was this: he would pick a wife who would not be troublesome for him. And no one not even his family would control that.

With the matter of the marriage contract settled, Millicas shifted his focus to something more immediate helping Koneko, his newly acquired pawn, understand the basics of devil contracts. He spent the rest of his afternoon sitting with her, explaining how the system worked.

"Devil contracts are simple," Millicas explained, reclining on a chair in his room. Koneko sat cross-legged on the floor, her ears perked up as she listened intently. "Humans summon us for tasks—anything from minor favours to large-scale problems. In return, they offer us something in exchange, it used to be their soul, but now it can be something less extreme like money or loyalty."

Koneko nodded quietly, though she still looked a little apprehensive. It was clear that, despite her strength and budding skills as a devil, she was still adjusting to this new life. Millicas could sense her hesitance, but he also knew that fieldwork would help her more than any amount of lectures.

"To be honest," Millicas continued, trying to lighten the mood, "it's not always as dramatic as the humans make it seem in their stories. Most of the time, the requests are simple things wealth, status, or even love. But it's great practice for you."

Koneko tilted her head. "What kind of requests should I expect?"

"Nothing too crazy at first," Millicas assured her. "Usually, beginners get summoned for small, mundane things. I've already had fliers printed, and they'll be distributed in the Gremory territory in the human world. So, tomorrow, we should start seeing some summons."

He stood up, moving to the desk where he had meticulously written out instructions for the servant to distribute the fliers across the territory. Handing out fliers wasn't glamorous, but it was necessary. He glanced back at Koneko, her golden eyes locked on him.

"It'll be good practice for both of us," he said. "Plus, who knows? We might even get some contracts that are... interesting.

He smirked, and just then, the familiar ping of the system chimed in his mind.

[The system has appointed you a quest: Help Koneko to form a contract.]

[Quest: Contracts]

Reward: 5 levels

A small grin spread across Millicas's face. The system seemed to know exactly what he needed. This wasn't just about contracts anymore this was an opportunity to level up, sharpen his skills, and mentor Koneko all at once.

The next morning, they were summoned.

A request had come in from a middle-aged man, a minor noble in the human Gremory territory. Millicas could feel Koneko's nervous energy as they prepared to meet the client. She had been quiet throughout breakfast, her usual reserved self, but Millicas could sense a slight shift in her demeanour. It wasn't fear, exactly—it was more like anticipation.

"Are you ready for this?" Millicas asked as they stood outside the summoner's mansion.

Koneko gave a small nod. "I think so. But what if I mess up?"

Millicas placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You won't. And even if you do, it's not the end of the world. We're here to learn, and mistakes are part of that. Besides, I'll be with you the whole time."

Koneko looked up at him with a flicker of gratitude in her eyes, then took a deep breath. Together, they teleported through the use of a magic circle before they knocked on the door, which was answered almost immediately.

The man who opened it was dressed in fine clothes, clearly excited, but a little too enthusiastic for Millicas's taste. His eyes widened the moment he saw them.

"Millicas Gremory!" he exclaimed, practically bouncing with excitement. "The Son of Lucifer, in my home! What an honour!"

Millicas resisted the urge to roll his eyes. It wasn't uncommon for people to fawn over him because of his lineage, but he hadn't expected a human to know him it still grated on him. He wasn't here for the attention—this was Koneko's time to shine.

"Yes, that's me," Millicas said with a polite smile. "But this is Koneko. She's the one you've summoned."

The man's gaze shifted to Koneko, who gave a small bow, her expression unreadable.

"I-I see," the man stammered, clearly still more interested in Millicas than the actual devil he had summoned. "Well, I'm glad to have both of you here. I have a… request."

Millicas gave Koneko an encouraging nod, prompting her to step forward and take the lead.

"What is your request?" she asked, her voice soft but steady.

The man looked between them nervously before finally speaking. "I… I want to become more popular. You see, I'm a minor noble, and it's hard to gain influence with the higher-ranking families. I want people to respect me, to look up to me."

Koneko blinked, processing the request. Millicas could tell she wasn't sure how to respond to something like this. Popularity wasn't exactly a tangible thing to grant, but there were ways devils could influence humans' lives subtly. This was where she had to get creative.

Millicas leaned in slightly and whispered, "Think of how devils manipulate the minds and desires of humans. You could give him a charm, something that enhances his charisma in the eyes of others."

Koneko's eyes flickered with understanding. "I see. I can grant you a charm that will make people see you in a more favourable light," she said, her voice gaining a bit of confidence.

The man's eyes lit up. "Yes! That's exactly what I need!"

Koneko closed her eyes, summoning a small charm in the form of a glowing orb. She placed it into the man's hands, who looked at it as though it were the most precious thing in the world.

"This will help you," she said. "But remember, your actions will still matter. The charm will only enhance what's already there."

The man nodded eagerly, clutching the charm to his chest. "Thank you, thank you! I'm forever in your debt."

As they left the mansion, Millicas turned to Koneko, a proud smile on his face. "You did great."

Koneko looked up at him, her expression still calm but with the faintest hint of satisfaction. "Thank you. It wasn't as hard as I thought."

"And now we've completed the contract," Millicas said. Reward time he thought.

As if on cue, another ping echoed in his mind.

[Quest completed: 5 levels]

[For every 20 contracts completed host may level up]

Millicas couldn't help but grin. He had levelled up, and Koneko had completed her first contract. This was only the beginning, but it was a strong start, especially now that he had found a passive way to level up without the need for a quest.

Still, though his level had jumped to [228].

"Ready for the next one?" Millicas asked his excitement barely contained.

Koneko gave a small nod. "Always."

Millicas couldn't help but feel a mix of anticipation and excitement as the day of the Ceremony finally arrived. Over the past few days, he had focused on contracts, levelling up steadily, and now standing proudly at level [233]. His progress had been remarkable, especially with Koneko by his side, learning quickly from both him and his mother. She had adapted well to her devil life, and Millicas could tell she was growing more confident, which would serve her well in the days to come.

But today wasn't about contracts or levelling up. Today was about him.

The grand celebration to announce his reception of the Evil Pieces was a big deal, not only for him but for the entire Gremory family. It was a way to demonstrate their influence and power within the devil society. The halls of Gremory Manor were decked out in elaborate decorations, with deep crimson and black banners hanging from the ceilings. The family crest proudly displayed in every corner, reminding all who attended of the importance of the event.

Millicas took a deep breath as he stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his formal attire. The black and red robes were tailored to perfection, fitting him like a glove, accentuating his noble status. The weight of responsibility hung over his shoulders like a cloak, but he embraced it. Today, he would no longer be seen merely as "the son of Sirzechs Lucifer," but as his own person a future leader in the devil world.

Koneko, standing by his side in a simple but elegant black dress, looked surprisingly composed for someone about to face the highest echelons of devil society. She had learned quickly under the tutelage of Millicas' mother, Grayfia Lucifuge, and now carried herself with the grace expected of a noble's servant.

"You ready for this?" Millicas asked, glancing at her through the mirror.

Koneko gave a small nod. "I am. I'll be there when needed."

Millicas smiled. "Good. We'll need to make a strong impression. Remember, this isn't just a celebration—it's politics. Every heir, every noble house, will be watching."

He could already hear the commotion of arriving guests outside. Lords and heirs from all the great devil families were gathering. Bael, Agares, Sitri, Glaysa-Labolas, Astaroth, Phenex, Belial, Paimon, Barbatos, Amon—practically every important family from the 72 Pillars, as well as other pureblooded clans and high-class devils, would be attending. It was a rare gathering of power, and Millicas knew that alliances would be forged, and rivalries might intensify.

As they left his chambers and made their way toward the grand ballroom, the halls of the manor echoed with the chatter of the attendees. The air was thick with expectation. This wasn't just a party; it was a stage for alliances to be made and Lords to expand their influence.

When they reached the ballroom, Millicas took in the scene. The room was bathed in a soft, golden glow from the chandeliers above. Nobles in resplendent attire mingled with one another, their conversations a low hum of intrigue. His eyes scanned the crowd, spotting several familiar faces. Sairaorg Bael, tall and imposing, stood talking to Sona Sitri, who held herself with her usual composed, analytical demeanour. Ravel Phenex was by her brother Riser's side, looking every bit the elegant noble lady she was.

But today, all eyes would eventually fall on him.

"Ah, the man of the hour!" a voice called out.

Millicas turned to see his grandfather, Lord Gremory, approaching with a wide grin. Beside him was Lord Phenex, the two of them looking particularly pleased with themselves, undoubtedly basking in the importance of the event.

Lord Gremory clapped a hand on Millicas' shoulder. "You've done well, my boy. Today marks your official step into our world. The Gremory name will shine even brighter through you."

Millicas smiled, though his mind briefly flicked back to the overheard conversation about Rias and Riser's arranged marriage. He knew this event was also partly a political move to seal alliances, and that Rias's fate had already been decided. Though he harboured little affection for his aunt, he couldn't help but feel a touch of satisfaction that her rebellious nature would be turned towards Riser Phenex and away from him.

"Thank you, Grandfather," Millicas replied. "I'll make sure the Gremory name continues to hold its place."

Lord Phenex then stepped forward, giving a slight nod. "Your growth has been impressive, Millicas. I hope you and Ravel will work closely in the future. After all, our families are aligned in more ways than one."

Millicas gave a polite nod, but inwardly he was relieved that his name hadn't been tied to any sort of marriage contract yet. There would be time for that, and when it came, he would ensure that he had control over his fate.

As the formalities of greetings passed, Millicas stood tall, his presence commanding attention as the announcements began. His parents, Sirzechs and Grayfia, stood proudly as the official declaration of Millicas' possession of his Evil Piece set was made. Applause echoed throughout the room, the nobles acknowledging his place in devil society.

This was his moment. And he would seize it.

As the night continued, Millicas found himself engaging in conversations with various heirs and lords. He spoke carefully, making alliances where it mattered, and staying guarded when necessary. As the night progressed, the time finally came for the lords and high-ranking nobles to convene in private discussions, leaving the heirs and children of prominent families to mingle amongst themselves. This was a key moment an opportunity for future alliances to form, rivalries to stir, and, perhaps most importantly, potential marriage prospects to be scouted.

Millicas observed the room with a calculated eye, scanning the various young heirs and heiresses along with members from many devil families. He wasn't here just to socialize—every move he made would have a long-lasting impact on his future, and he knew it.

One by one, the female youth caught his attention. Seekvaira Agares stood elegantly in a corner, deep in conversation with a few other noble devils. Her intellect was well-known, and her strategic mind was respected even at her young age. Still, Millicas found himself more focused on two other girls.

Sona Sitri, poised and dignified, was engaged in a calm, intellectual discussion with a group of heirs. Her analytical nature and sharp political mind had already earned her a reputation. A marriage alliance with the Sitri family could yield powerful connections, especially considering her sister, Serafall Leviathan, held a position as one of the Four Maou. The political leverage from such a marriage would be immense, aligning the Gremory family even closer with the ruling class of the Underworld.

Then there was Latia Astaroth, standing with quiet grace a little further away. The Astaroth family was prestigious, and the influence they carried was undeniable. Latia herself was known for her refined demeanour and subtle yet effective handling of political matters. The Astaroth name had ties to the current Beelzebub, another member of the Four Maou. A marriage with her would bring considerable power and prestige, further intertwining the Gremory legacy with the pillars of the Underworld's ruling elite.

Millicas weighed his options. Both Sona and Latia offered strong political benefits, but the Sitri family's connection to Serafall Leviathan gave her an edge especially as Serafall was a known sis-con who would spoil her sister. Sona herself was intelligent, resourceful, and already proved to be a natural leader, characteristics Millicas respected. He had always valued intelligence and tactical thinking, and Sona Sitri embodied those qualities perfectly. However, Latia's calm, steady influence could also be an asset, especially when dealing with the often volatile nature of devil politics.

As he considered his options, his mind drifted to another important figure in the room-Sairaorg Bael. Though Sairaorg lacked the demonic power typical of his family, Millicas knew of his untapped potential. Sairaorg's strength would eventually surpass many others in their generation, and an alliance with him, even in the early stages of his development, would pay off immensely in the future.

Millicas glanced in Sairaorg's direction. The Bael heir was standing alone, his tall, imposing frame attracting attention despite his currently diminished standing due to his lack of inherited demonic power, yet despite this he stood alone. There was something about Sairaorg's raw determination that drew Millicas in. The man wasn't just strong he was resilient, a quality that would make him a valuable ally in the future.

Now was the perfect time to establish a connection. Before Sairaorg rose to his future prestige, Millicas could offer a hand of friendship. They could form an early alliance, one built on mutual respect and understanding, rather than just political gain. Sairaorg, unlike many other devils, wouldn't forget such gestures of loyalty.

With a firm nod to himself, Millicas decided to take action. He approached Sairaorg, cutting through the crowd, ignoring the curious glances sent his way. The Bael heir noticed him approaching and raised an eyebrow, his expression curious but respectful.

"Millicas Gremory," Sairaorg said, his deep voice resonating through the air. "I didn't expect to see you speak to me, but I'm glad you came."

Millicas smiled, offering a respectful nod. "Sairaorg. I've been keeping an eye on you for some time now. I believe we share a similar understanding of how this world works."

Sairaorg crossed his arms, a smirk playing on his lips. "You think so? What makes you say that?"

"I respect strength," Millicas replied smoothly, his voice calm but firm. "Not just the strength that comes from birth or status, but the strength earned through effort, resilience, and will. You've proven that already, even if many don't see it yet."

Sairaorg's smirk widened into a genuine smile, his eyes gleaming with newfound interest. "You're not like the others, are you? Most devils only care about the power that's handed to them. But you... I can tell you see things differently."

Millicas shrugged, his gaze steady. "In a world like ours, relying on inherited power alone can be a dangerous mistake. You're working hard to build a place for yourself in our world and I respect that"

Sairaorg nodded, his expression thoughtful. "You've got my attention, Millicas. What are you thinking?"

"A future alliance," Millicas said bluntly. "When the time comes, we could stand to benefit from working together. Our families might have affiliations, but that doesn't mean we can't find common ground."

Sairaorg's eyes flickered with interest. "An alliance with the son of Lucifer and Scion of the Gremory family, huh? You don't think it's too early to plan such things?"

"It's never too early," Millicas said, his tone confident. "And if I'm right about you, you'll be a force to reckon with in the future. I'd rather have you as an ally than an enemy."

Sairaorg chuckled. "You're bold, I'll give you that. But I like it. Consider me in."

Millicas smiled, satisfied with the outcome. This was just the beginning, but already, he had laid the foundation for future partnerships. He would continue observing the other heirs, calculating his next moves, but for now, aligning with Sairaorg and keeping an eye on both Sona and Latia for marriage prospects was the best strategy.

Millicas and Sairaorg continued their conversation for the next few hours, finding that they shared more common ground than expected. Their dialogue flowed easily, a testament to their mutual respect. Topics shifted seamlessly from combat strategies and the future of their respective families to the current political climate in the Underworld.

"So, tell me," Sairaorg began, leaning in slightly, "What's your take on the current power structure of the Underworld? I've heard rumours that certain families are trying to shift their alliances."

Millicas pondered for a moment before answering. "It's a delicate balance right now. The Four Maou hold significant power, but as always, the Great King faction remains influential. And with all these upcoming marriages being arranged, you can see the attempts at consolidating power. It's all political maneuvering."

Sairaorg nodded, his eyes sharp. "Marriages, huh? I heard about the Phenex family's interest in the Gremory line."

Millicas smirked. "Ah, yes. I overheard that myself. It seems my aunt Rias and Riser Phenex will be paired off. It's not my concern though." He shrugged, keeping his true thoughts hidden for now. He was secretly relieved that the contract involved Rias rather than himself, but that wasn't something he'd voice here.

Sairaorg caught the hint of indifference in Millicas' voice. "You don't seem too upset about it. Most people would be frustrated at the idea of arranged marriages."

"Well, I've still got time to decide my own marriage," Millicas replied smoothly. "And I plan on choosing carefully. A union should serve both personal and political goals."

Sairaorg grinned. "Smart. I like that approach. You'd make a fine head of the Gremory family, unfortunately, you're not the heir."

"Not for long," Millicas thought to himself, mentally plotting as Sairaorg spoke. He politely steered the conversation toward more neutral topics, careful not to reveal too much of his future plans and aspirations to become the Future Lord Gremory.

As the conversation with Sairaorg wound down, Millicas exchanged a firm handshake and a warm farewell with his fellow heir. He watched Sairaorg leave, already mentally filing away the interaction as a step in the right direction. But now, it was time to move on to his next target.

Sona Sitri.

As Millicas made his way through the room, his mind briefly flickered to Serafall Leviathan, Sona's older sister and one of the Maou. The idea of getting closer to Sona inevitably brought the thought of Serafall to the forefront. He knew how protective Serafall was of her little sister, and her fierce devotion to Sona was well known throughout the underworld. If Millicas were to align himself with Sona, there was no telling how Serafall might respond. Who knows? In the future, Serafall's interest might even become a complication or an advantage.

Shaking the thought aside, he pressed forward. The possibilities were endless, and while the political benefits of marrying Sona were clear, Millicas was also keenly aware of the intricate web of relationships that came with it. It wasn't just Sona he had to win over; he would have to be careful around Serafall's watchful gaze as well. But for now, his focus was on Sona herself.

He found her standing by a group of young devils, her calm demeanour radiating a sense of authority despite her age. Sona was as composed as ever, her eyes sharp behind her glasses, always calculating and observing her surroundings.

Millicas approached confidently. "Lady Sona," he greeted, offering a polite bow. "It's a pleasure to see you this evening."

Sona turned to him, her expression neutral but her gaze assessing. "Millicas Gremory," she replied, her voice measured. "Likewise. I trust you've had an eventful evening so far?"

"Eventful, yes. Though I've been saving the best conversations for last," Millicas responded smoothly, flashing a charming smile.

Sona raised an eyebrow at that but didn't seem particularly swayed by his charm. "Is that so? And what conversation might that be?"

"The one where we discuss matters of future alliances and the mutual benefits our families could enjoy," Millicas said, his tone diplomatic. "The Gremory and Sitri clans share much in common, after all. I see great potential in strengthening our bonds further."

Sona's eyes flickered with interest, though she remained as composed as ever. "You're speaking in vague terms, Millicas. What exactly are you proposing?"

Millicas took a moment, choosing his words carefully. "I believe our goals align in more ways than one. Strength in unity has always been a hallmark of the great devil houses, and I see no reason why the Sitri and Gremory shouldn't explore ways to work more closely together."

Sona studied him for a moment, her expression unreadable. "You speak of alliances, but I'm curious are you referring to political alliances, or something more personal?"

Millicas allowed himself a small, calculated smile. "Perhaps both, Lady Sona. Though, I'd never presume without your consideration. I've always admired your strategic mind."

Sona adjusted her glasses, her lips twitching into the faintest of smirks. "Flattery will get you nowhere with me, Millicas."

"I wouldn't dream of it," Millicas replied, his tone light but respectful. "I'm merely stating what I observe. You have a reputation for your intelligence, and I'm certain that any potential alliance between us would be mutually beneficial."

Sona seemed to consider this for a moment. "You're bold, I'll give you that. But as you likely know, alliances in our world are rarely simple. There are many factors to weigh, and I don't make decisions lightly."

"Nor do I," Millicas agreed. "But I think it's worth considering. You're an heir to one of the most powerful houses, and I'm an heir to the Gremory line. Together, we could achieve great things."

Sona's gaze sharpened slightly. "Are you suggesting a marriage contract, Millicas?"

Millicas met her gaze evenly. "I'm suggesting we keep our options open, Lady Sona. The future is uncertain, but having powerful allies is always a good strategy. Whether that comes through marriage or other forms of collaboration, I believe it's worth exploring."

Sona didn't respond immediately, but Millicas could see the wheels turning in her mind. "I'll consider what you've said," she finally replied, her voice measured but not dismissive.

"That's all I ask," Millicas said, bowing slightly. "I appreciate your time, Lady Sona. I look forward to seeing what the future holds."

With that, Millicas excused himself, leaving Sona to her thoughts. He knew he had planted the seed. Now, it was a matter of patience waiting to see how it would grow.

After the discussion with Sona, Millicas felt a sense of accomplishment wash over him. The evening had been productive, and he had made significant strides in his plans for the future. As the crowd began to thin, he spotted Latia Astaroth near one of the elaborate refreshments tables, her vibrant dress a striking contrast to the other attendees.

He approached her, a friendly smile on his face. "Latia! It's good to see you. How have you found the celebration so far?"

Latia turned to him, her face lighting up with recognition. "Millicas! It's been incredible! The food is fantastic, and I've met some interesting people." She took a sip from her glass, her eyes twinkling with excitement. "I even had a chance to talk to some of the other heirs. It's been quite an experience."

Millicas nodded, his curiosity piqued. "That's great! Which heirs did you meet?"

"I spoke with Seekvaira Agares and some of Sona's friends," she said, her enthusiasm palpable. "They were nice, and it's fascinating to hear about their family dynamics. But I haven't talked to Riser yet. I hear he's quite…confident."

"Confidence is one way to put it," Millicas replied, a hint of amusement creeping into his voice. "I'd personally call it arrogance. What do you think of all the political alliances being formed here? I mean, we're all heirs, and it seems like everyone is thinking about the future."

Latia shrugged, looking contemplative. "I think it's important, but part of me wonders if true connections can ever form under such constraints. It feels like we're all being groomed for these… arrangements without a say in it."

Millicas smiled, appreciating her perspective. "You're not wrong. Sometimes I think these alliances prioritize power over personal happiness. But at the end of the day, we have to navigate this world. What do you hope for in the future?"

"I just want to be able to make my own choices," Latia said, her tone earnest. "I want to marry for love, not politics."

Millicas raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her perspective. "An interesting opinion," he replied thoughtfully, considering her words. He respected her desire for autonomy in a world where such choices were often dictated by family expectations.

Before he could respond further, he sensed the conversation reaching its natural conclusion. "Well, it was great talking to you, Latia. I hope we get the chance to discuss more in the future," he said with a warm smile, hoping to leave the door open for future discussions.

With a polite nod, he stepped away from the table, the ambient noise of the party shifting around him as guests continued to mingle. As the celebration began to wind down, he made his way toward Koneko, who was standing a little distance away, her eyes darting around the hall.

"Hey, Koneko," Millicas greeted her, leaning slightly down to meet her gaze. "How are you feeling about the party?"

Koneko shrugged, crossing her arms over her chest. "It was... different. Lots of people, and everyone was talking so much. I didn't understand most of it," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Millicas knelt beside her, trying to make her feel more comfortable. "That's okay. It can be overwhelming, especially with so many heirs and nobles in one place. Did anyone say anything that stood out to you?"

"No, not really," she responded, her voice barely above a whisper. Koneko's gaze remained fixed on the floor, her shyness palpable amid the bustling crowd. The grand hall was filled with devils, many of whom were exchanging farewells, their laughter and chatter echoing off the ornate walls.

Millicas noticed her discomfort and offered a reassuring smile. "It can be a lot to take in, can't it? All these people, the fancy clothes... It's like a whirlwind."

Koneko nodded, still not making eye contact. "It feels... overwhelming. I'm not used to being around so many devils at once. They all seem so important."

"They are, but remember, you're important too," Millicas encouraged. "You're a part of my peerage now, and that makes you special in your own right. You have every right to be here, just as much as they do."

The party began to wind down, with the last few guests saying their goodbyes. The atmosphere shifted from lively celebration to quiet departure, the clinking of glasses and soft music gradually fading into the background. Koneko seemed to relax slightly, her posture easing as she took a deep breath.

"Thanks, Millicas," she said softly, finally looking up at him. "I just... I don't want to mess anything up. I want to do well."

"You won't mess anything up," he reassured her. "You're learning, and that's all part of it. Everyone starts somewhere. Just be yourself, and you'll find your way."

As the last of the lords and ladies departed, the grand hall became eerily quiet, save for the rustling of the cleaning staff gathering up leftover decorations and plates. Millicas glanced around, taking in the remnants of the celebration, the streamers hanging limp and the tables gradually emptied of their lavish spreads.

"Are you ready to go?" he asked Koneko, who was now watching the staff work with a hint of curiosity.

She nodded, her expression softening as she took one last look at the beautiful hall. "Yeah, let's go."

They walked side by side, leaving behind the hall, stepping into the cool night air outside. The moon hung high in the sky, casting a gentle glow over the Gremory manor.

As they entered the manner they made their way to their respective homes before heading to sleep to be ready for another day of contracts.
