Chapter 183: Showcase, Part One
{Raven}
In another timeline, this was where Raven would go after having Melisa's blood on her hands. Just being her sent chills down her spine.
The Queen's Rest looked exactly like what a human-only bar should look like - all polished wood and brass fixtures, trying desperately to appear more upscale than it actually was. The kind of place where merchants and minor nobles could pretend they were better than they were.
Raven moved through the scattered afternoon crowd, her steps measured and deliberate. Every patron here was human, of course. Some glanced her way, but most kept to their drinks and conversations.
[Follow the instructions. Act like you've just killed her. Like you've just killed Melisa.]
The thought made her stomach turn.
She approached the bar where a man stood polishing glasses. He looked unremarkable in every way - average height, average build, brown hair starting to thin at the temples. The kind of face you'd forget the moment you looked away. Perfect for a Shadow Mage hiding in plain sight.
"Henry," Raven said quietly, using the name from her instructions. "I've completed my task."
The man's hands stilled on the glass he was cleaning. When he looked up, his previously bland features had hardened into something far more dangerous.
"Well," he said, his voice carrying an edge that made several nearby patrons suddenly remember they had somewhere else to be. "You've got some nerve showing up here, Raven."
[Not going as planned. Already not going as planned.]
"I know," Raven replied, letting a note of desperation creep into her voice. "I know I've... strayed from the path. But I've seen the error of my ways. Recently, I've come to understand-"
"Recently?" Henry cut her off, setting down the glass with deliberate care. "You mean like at the gala? Or perhaps during your nighttime excursions with that professor, hunting down our brothers and sisters?"
[They've been watching. Of course they've been watching.]
Raven leaned forward, pitching her voice low and urgent.
"That was... I was confused. Lost. But I understand now. The nim girl, she-"
"The nim girl you were supposed to kill months ago?" His smile didn't reach his eyes. "The same one you've been seen cozying up to? Along with that kitsune slut?"
Raven's fingers twitched, wanting to reach for the knife she kept hidden. But she forced herself to remain still.
"It was necessary," she said. "To get close. To understand. But now I see clearly. I want... I need to come back."
He studied her for a long moment, his ordinary features making his predatory gaze all the more unsettling.
"Come with me," he finally said, gesturing toward a door behind the bar. "Let's discuss your... rehabilitation."
[Shit.]
Raven knew she should find some excuse to step outside, to alert Javir. But any hesitation now would give her away completely.
[Sorry. Looks like we might just end up doing this the hard way.]
She followed Henry through the door and down a narrow hallway. The sounds from the bar grew muffled, then distant. They passed several closed doors before stopping at one that looked exactly like all the others.
"After you," Henry said, gesturing to the door.
[It's a trap. Obviously it's a trap.]
But Raven had no choice. She stepped through the doorway into a small storage room, bottles of liquor lining the shelves.
She heard the door close behind her.
"You know," Henry said, his voice dropping all pretense of civility, "Miria always said you were her greatest success. Her perfect little weapon."
Raven turned, already moving into a defensive stance.
"She also said you were too soft," he continued, drawing a blade that gleamed with an unnatural purple light. "Too human. Looks like she was right about that too."
[Here we go.]
"You can still join us, Raven. For real this time. All you have to do is kill that purple-skinned bitch. For real this time."
Raven's hand found her knife.
"No," she said simply. "I don't think I will."
Henry's ordinary features twisted into something ugly.
"Then I guess we do this the hard way."
He lunged forward, the enchanted blade singing through the air where Raven's head had been a moment before.
[Javir,] Raven thought as she spun away from the attack, [I really hope you can hear this fight from outside.]

{Melisa}
Melisa and Isabella strolled through Lord Malichim's marketplace, the afternoon sun casting long shadows between the colorful stalls.
Isabella was practically bouncing with each step, her pink tail swishing behind her as she pointed out various trinkets and baubles. Her perky, medium-sized tits bounced with every movement, drawing appreciative stares from passersby – not that the shameless kitsune minded.
"Oh! Look at that crystal ball!" Isabella squealed, pressing her face against a vendor's display. "Think we could use it for the presentation? Show off some fancy light tricks?"
But Melisa's mind was elsewhere.
[I hope Raven's okay,] she thought, her tail twitching nervously. [That human-only bar could be dangerous. I mean, she's a human, but you know, still. What if they figure out she's working with a nim? What if-]
"Hey." Isabella's voice cut through her spiral of worry. The kitsune grabbed Melisa's hand, intertwining their fingers. "Raven's gonna be fine. She was literally trained as an assassin, remember? Pretty sure she can handle a few drunk anti-nim assholes if they end up recognizing her or whatever."
Melisa squeezed Isabella's hand.
"I know, I know. It's just..." she sighed, her red eyes scanning the crowd. "Everything's so fucked up right now, you know? The queen's dead, the princess wants my head, and now Raven's infiltrating some shady bar..."
"And you're still standing," Isabella reminded her, using her free hand to grope Melisa's ass. "Plus, you've got the hottest social circle in Syux to help you through it!"
"Bella!" Melisa yelped, though she didn't pull away. "We're in public!"
"And you think that's gonna stop me?" Isabella winked, wriggling her brows.
[She is so, SO lucky she's a cute fox girl.]
But then her expression turned uncharacteristically serious. Her hand dropped from Melisa's ass, and she pulled them both into a quiet corner between stalls.
"Speaking of helping..." Isabella began, her green eyes intense. "There's something I've been meaning to ask you. About that... healing spell you made. The one I used on Mom."
Melisa's brow furrowed.
"What about it?"
Isabella bit her lip, her ears twitching nervously.
"Do you... know all of its effects? Like, what it actually does to someone?"
[Well, that's a mood shift,] Melisa thought, studying her friend's worried expression.
"Honestly?" Melisa shrugged, offering a wry smile. "Not really. I kind of just... threw it together? Mixed some L- some, uh, different kinds of magic together. I just kinda... got a healing spell out of it. I'm not too sure what it does exactly."
Isabella's eyes widened.
"Seriously? You don't know what your own spell does!?"
"Pretty much?" Melisa scratched the base of one of her horns sheepishly. "I mean, it worked, right? Kimiko's alive and well. Actually, she seemed pretty energetic when I saw her yesterday. Really energetic. Like, 'fucking you against the wall while Margaret watched' energetic."
But Isabella didn't take the bait for their usual banter though, and that REALLY had Melisa concerned.
"Mel," she said softly, "that's kind of terrifying. You're creating these incredible spells, but you don't know their full effects? What they might do to someone long-term?"
Melisa felt a chill run down her spine despite the warm afternoon sun.
"I... hadn't really thought about it that way," she admitted. "I just get these ideas, and they work, so I keep using them."
With a sigh, Isabella wrapped an arm around Melisa and pulled her into a one-arm hug.
"Don't get me wrong," the kitsune murmured, her cock twitching against Melisa's thigh, "I'm grateful. You saved my mom. But maybe we should start being more careful? Study the effects more?"
Before Melisa could respond, Isabella pulled back with her usual mischievous grin.
"Besides," she purred, her hand sliding back to Melisa's ass, "I'd hate for anything to happen to this perfect pussy of yours because of some spell gone wrong. Who else would let me fuck them in Javir's garden?"
Melisa rolled her eyes as the tension shattered.
"You're impossible," she said fondly, giving Isabella's cock a quick squeeze through her skirt.
But as they continued through the market, discussing their presentation plans and dodging Isabella's increasingly handsy attempts at "public affection", Melisa couldn't shake the uneasy feeling her friend's words had stirred.
[What DO my spells actually do?] she wondered, watching Isabella haggle with a crystal merchant while not-so-subtly showing off her cleavage. [Maybe I should start paying more attention to that...]
Then again, that's what she had Isabella for – to remind her when she was being too reckless.
... Even if the reminder came between attempts to fuck in public.

[At least my life's never boring,] Melisa thought with a smile as Isabella bounced back to her side, proudly displaying her "discounted" crystals and the merchant's visible boner. [And, I mean, come on... Can't a girl let her kitsune gf do her in the middle of the street every once in a while? I think it's objectively the correct thing!]
