Reborn as a DRAGON

Chapter 38: A dragon’s remains

'We have failed, the demons have also failed, and now that we are at our lowest is when those damned humans made their move! We should have annihilated their filthy race when we had the chance, but now it seems like there is no hope, no hope for us elves. Were we truly wrong? Did we not fight for the cause of our Goddess? Was that cause right in the first place? Why did the Dragon King appear? Why!?' — ???

I circled the ancient battlefield from the air with caution, my eyes scanned the various skeletons and weapons that laid on the ground in interest. From the shape of the battlefield, it appeared like the various humanoid giants and monsters banded together against the dragon whose skeleton was in the middle of it all.

Th enormous skeleton was easily the size of a mountain, and from the distance, it appeared like one as well. 'It looks a little bit bigger than father?' I inwardly noted. Green extended her head to try and catch a glimpse at the land below while keeping her paws tightly gripped around my horns.

It was then that a sudden movement near the dragon skeleton caught my attention. It was an abrupt black shadow that moved so fast between the giant bones, hidden from plain sight.

'What was that?' I wondered. My curiosity got the better of me, and I ended up lowering my altitude to try and get a better look. This time, multiple shadows ran from all sides as they made their way deeper between the giant white bones.

It seemed like they were making their way towards the area where the heart was once located. I once again rose through the air as my vision was hindered by the collapsed bones in the skeleton's chest area.

'It looks like i'll have to land and check,' I mumbled as a growl escaped my mouth. Green on my head seemed concerned as she gently patted me.

'Don't worry, I'll be fine. You just go play around the mountain and don't get far, i'll be right back,' Since I was still unable to communicate as coherently with her like my parents did with me, I used my emotions to convey my intentions to her.

Green was reluctant to let go and leave, and so I gently shook my head left and right urging her to hop off. After a moment of hesitation, Green let out a pitiful low growl as she launched herself into the air.

She circled me a few times before she rose higher in the air where she remained. I could still sense her worried gaze as she kept her eyes on me. To that, I let out a low growl to reassure her before I dove headfirst to the ground.

Just as I was about to reach it, I abruptly adjusted my body raising my head to the sky while moving my back limbs forward to soften the landing as I flapped my large wings.

Dust rose as I landed with a loud thud before an eerie silence followed. I glanced about in curiosity, my head tilting back as I marveled at the sheer size of the bones. I looked like an insignificant insect in front of it.

I turned my head as I notice a peculiar detail, none of the other corpses and skeletons that surrounded the dragon's remains were very close to it, it was as if an invisible wall stopped everyone preventing them from reaching the dragon.

'I wonder what happened?' I thought as I looked at what seemed to be at least a few hundred meters of empty land between the closest corpse, that of a humanoid giant and the dragon's.

Turning my view to my front, I was able to spot the various cracks and tears between the bones where I assumed those shadow things went. I closed my eyes for a second as I tried to feel the mana in the surroundings.

'Good, it's there,' I mumbled. The straight of water type mana was surprisingly strong in this area, which was quite confusing since I did not see any large body of water around here.

Nonetheless, I was still grateful. A stronger mana presence means stronger capabilities, which in turn means better protection for me. Strangely, I was not sure if it was just my imagination, but I was able to sense and 'see' the mana current more clearly now.

'Is this one of the benefits of growing larger?' I chuckled, as my head glanced around me in wonder while mana happily brushed itself against my scales.

'At least that's reassuring,' I thought as I slowly made my way towards the inside of the abnormally large dragon skeleton. I had no problem adjusting to my sudden growth sprout and instead felt quite pleasant as if I was finally able to stretch my limbs after sleeping for a long time.

It was a strange feeling, yet I didn't complain. Once I stepped foot inside the skeleton, my vision suddenly swam as the world abruptly changed around me. My mouth opened wide as I kept turning my head left and right in confusion, the only thing I could mutter was a growl of confusion.

'Where the hell is this?!'

It was as if I had suddenly been teleported to another entirely different dimension. The dragon bones were no more, instead, I was now standing in a small clearing in the middle of a unfamiliar forest.

Trees with leaves colored in the various shades of a rainbow surrounded me. The grass that felt soft beneath my heels was a soft yellow color. Just as I was marveling at the beauty of the scenery, countless eyes appeared from between the trees as they stared at me with interest.

Their sudden appearance caused shivers to run down my spine, I was surrounded. As my gaze darted back and forth, I tried to remain calm with my guard up. 'I don't feel any malicious intent from them,' I noted.

Just then, a sudden roar rocked the clearing causing the trees to shake as all the eyes that stared at me disappeared at once. The sound of footsteps slowly making their way towards me made my heart drop as I gulped.

'Now what?'
