Chapter 49 - Blue Light Technology
Unfortunately, this place was so complicated that, after winding through it over and over, the group got completely lost again. Hu Haotian was furious: “The worst decision I ever made was giving this supermarket a ‘submarine’ theme. A ‘submarine’—what was I even thinking?”
Since it was supposed to resemble a submarine, the generator would naturally be located somewhere in the lower section.
When they still couldn’t find it, they decided to resort to smashing through the walls from the spot where they had originally heard the sound.
By now, everyone was well-practiced in this kind of brute-force approach, so they broke through the wall quite easily.
But when they saw what was inside, they immediately regretted it.
Liu Bing exclaimed, “Damn, this is actually a freezer room! Look at all this frozen food in here.”
“What are we going to do now that we’ve put a big hole in the wall? The cold air is going to escape, and all of this stuff will spoil.”
In the apocalypse, nights were extremely cold, and days were unbearably hot. Without the refrigeration, these supplies would likely spoil within a couple of days.
“Quickly, grab some blankets to cover up the hole,” Hu Haotian reacted fast, immediately assigning tasks. “Liu Hai, can you check to see how much longer the battery can keep powering the freezer?”
“There are bedrooms upstairs, and we’ve cleared out all the zombies there,” Tian Hai said, immediately leading a group upstairs to gather blankets and wooden boards.
Everyone sprang into action, and Liu Bing checked the battery level: “It should last for about three more days.”
The entire city experienced a power outage on the third day after the apocalypse, and this freezer room managed to hold on with the battery for about a month, which was indeed its limit. If they hadn’t been lucky and arrived so late, this batch of frozen food would likely have spoiled and become inedible.
Hu Haotian asked, “Can we obtain enough solar photovoltaic panels in three days?”
Bai Qi pulled out a national map from his backpack and flipped to the page for the southern district of City A.
The others looked at his map in disbelief: “…”
What kind of preparation was this? Not only did he have a national map, but the various points on it were also marked very clearly.
Bai Qi searched carefully and said, “There’s a place about 120 kilometers from here called Blue Light Technology.”
Blue Light Technology was a large factory that produced solar photovoltaic panels.
Hu Haotian, who often shuttled between City H and City A, immediately recalled it when Bai Qi mentioned it and said, “In that case, let’s go there tomorrow and bring the solar panels back.”
Liu Bing calculated, factoring in the electricity consumption of the villa, and estimated that they would need about 270 panels.
“At that time, we can place them on each roof. If there isn’t enough space, we can put them in front of the courtyard. After all, the villa area gets good sunlight.”
With a rough plan in place, everyone momentarily set aside concerns about building walls.
Dinner was still held at Hu Haotian’s villa that night. It was a bountiful day, and everyone was generous, bringing out their pots and pans without hesitation.
Using the ingredients they had just retrieved from the freezer, they enjoyed a hot pot meal.
Aside from Bai Qi’s trio, this was the most lavish meal the people in the convoy had had since the apocalypse.
Although the situation outside was grim, at least they were still alive and striving to make their lives better.
The next morning, the ability users from the convoy gathered at the entrance, setting off for Blue Light Technology in City A.
The plan they had devised was to travel there in one day, spend the night, and return the next day.
The same nine people set out this time, while the other seven, who had no abilities, stayed in a villa, locking the doors and windows to hunker down for two days.
The 120-kilometer journey normally took only three hours round trip, but with so many zombies on the roads after the apocalypse, they worried about fatigue driving after using their powers. Moreover, having experienced the level of zombie gatherings in City A at night, the convoy felt it was much safer to spend the night in a secure location rather than rushing back in the dark.
They had collected plenty of supplies, with blankets and similar essentials being a necessity. To be on the safe side, they also brought several days’ worth of rations.
Though Tang Ruo had a space to store items, the trio packed many essentials in the car to avoid exposure.
They had already discussed the exact location of Blue Light Technology the night before, so this time Bai Qi didn’t need to lead the way; Hu Haotian’s vehicle took the lead instead.
This was naturally because his vehicle was the most durable and crash-resistant.
Following closely behind was the truck they had driven out of the supermarket.
The southern suburbs of City A were the emerging industrial zone, home to many of China’s well-known enterprises. Large companies were situated on either side of the highway, and there was often a considerable distance between each company’s gate.
The road here leads to the suburbs of City A, so no cars were traveling this way; instead, traffic was backed up on the road entering City A. If it weren’t for the large plants that separated the two routes, the cars from that side would have spilled over into this area.
There were too many zombies on the road, so the group was moving slowly and had to stop periodically to clear the zombies in front. They were worried that if there were too many, they might flip the vehicle.
Fortunately, the zombies they encountered were not very strong; in fact, some hadn’t even evolved yet. Since this road led to the suburbs of City A, there wasn’t the continuous stream of zombies that flooded into the city.
The group was managing to handle the situation.
However, there were times when they found it overwhelming.
Pan Dawei, looking exhausted, was leaning against the car door, panting, “I can’t do it anymore. I’m getting old; tossing a few seeds has already drained my abilities.”
Liu Bing, who was nearby and using a shovel to kill zombies, noted that his speed abilities only slightly accelerated his movements at first and was otherwise quite weak. “Old Pan, why don’t you grab a shovel and start killing zombies too? You’ll get the hang of it after a while.”
Pan Dawei tossed down a watermelon seed, which quickly sprouted into vines that ensnared two approaching zombies.
“What’s frustrating about abilities is that they can run out. Wouldn’t it be great if they could just keep going indefinitely?”
Liu Bing swung his shovel to deal with two zombies. “Hey, if they never ran out, then we’d be invincible! I could run all the way to City H without stopping—that would be amazing.”
“Hey, do you think my vines could grow all the way up to the sky? Then I could climb them like Mario to pick mushrooms up in the clouds…”
Liu Bing looked at him incredulously. “You’re not suggesting that you’d climb up those vines to eat coins, are you…?”
Pan Dawei tossed another watermelon seed, “Who knows what’s up in the sky…”
“You’re silly; of course, there’s the atmosphere up there.”
Pan Dawei rolled his eyes at him, “That was before. Now even zombies are coming out; who knows what’s up there now? Haven’t you seen that planes can’t even fly anymore?”
Liu Bing: “…”
I really need to study hard and learn how to argue effectively!
While the two were lost in their thoughts and rambling, they had no intention of stopping their discussion.
However, the zombies didn’t pause to listen to their conversation.
So, the two dared not delay any longer and continued to clear out the zombies that were approaching them.
