Chapter 38 - The End
“Earth users, build up the wall again. Those who have overused their abilities, fall back, and let the second team of ability users take over…”
Many retreated, but Bai Qi, due to the spatial stream’s help, hadn’t used up much energy and continued fighting on the front line.
After awakening his abilities, Tian Hai’s fighting spirit had become incredibly resilient, giving him ample energy reserves, so he, too, remained on the front line.
But there were simply too many zombies. Wave after wave fell, piling up outside the earth wall. The zombies coming from behind stepped on the bodies, forcing the earth users to keep reinforcing and raising the wall.
Even so, sometimes the abilities would be exhausted, and the wall would give way under pressure.
Then, the zombies would surge in like an unstoppable tide.
Tang Ruo’s mental ability was limited. Faced with so many zombies, she tried repeatedly but couldn’t seal off the breach, so she focused her energy on shielding Bai Qi and Tian Hai.
If one person fell, they’d be swallowed up in an instant…
Every time a companion fell, an indescribable pain surged up from the soles of her feet.
“Damn it! I’m going all out!” One fire ability user let out a fierce roar and charged forward, releasing a massive wall of flame.
This was the critical moment, a sign of heightened power in their abilities.
That fierce shout stirred the blood of the other ability users, shaking them to their core and driving them to fight harder.
Faced with these monstrous creatures, they’d rather exhaust their abilities and die fighting than be devoured by zombies!
“Boom…” A metal ability user lifted a car and hurled it directly into the zombie horde.
The car flipped in the air and crashed down with a thunderous blast.
Following this explosion, several more deafening blasts echoed within the zombie ranks.
“Bang… boom…” Several bursts of fire erupted amidst the zombie crowd.
A massive blaze flared up, igniting the zombies nearby with gasoline leaking from the car.
Only then did the group realize that someone had thrown a few grenades into the horde.
The grenades created a bloody chaos among the zombies, an explosive carnage.
“Don’t just stand there! Keep defending! Metal users, keep throwing cars… Those without abilities, start organizing supplies from the vehicles…”
Hu Haotian shouted, hands busy as he pulled the pin on another grenade and tossed it out.
So the captain had grenades, this highly effective weapon!
It turned out the captain’s other vehicle was stocked with these deadly weapons!
With these, they could definitely make it through!
The grenades gave everyone a renewed sense of confidence.
Everyone fought even harder, pushing forward without a hint of hesitation.
The earth element users kept raising walls, quickly patching any breaches. The ranged ability users launched their powers from afar, and Tang Ruo used all her strength to create mental walls to protect those at the front.
After Hu Haotian threw each grenade, the big man behind him would immediately hand him another so he could continue. That man was his bodyguard before the apocalypse, but while Hu Haotian gained abilities afterward, his bodyguard did not.
Seeing the situation clearly, the bodyguard continued to follow him—not for money anymore but for survival. His skills were impressive enough that, even without abilities, he could take on zombies single-handedly with ease.
Bai Qi’s hands shimmered with icy light, and each shard of ice he released struck the zombies with deadly precision.
But the zombies seemed endless; each one that fell was immediately replaced by another.
The humans’ gasping breaths, the low growls of the zombies, and the air thick with the scent of charred flesh and fresh blood…
Slowly, the sky began to brighten, and before they realized it, the sun had fully risen. They had fought through the entire night.
With the sun’s intense rays beating down, the zombies finally stopped their relentless advance.
Without the constant flood of zombies, the group began to see a glimmer of hope in this battle.
By midday, when they killed the last zombie, everyone collapsed onto the ground in exhaustion.
Finally, it was over.
Now, they didn’t have the strength to say even a half-word to each other.
However, the feeling of being alive was undeniably good.
Bai Qi and Tian Hai had persisted all night without rest and were now exhausted, lying on the ground and only able to catch their breath.
Tang Ruo quickly pulled out two bottles of water from her bag and handed them to the two of them.
They had also supplemented their water supply during the zombie fights, and each time they drank, they found their abilities slightly recovering. However, the recovery speed was far less than the rate of energy they had expended.
After Bai Qi and Tian Hai regained some of their abilities, they stood up and began to clean up the battlefield.
“Cleaning up the battlefield” meant, of course, digging out the zombie cores.
After these days, Tian Hai had learned the purpose of the cores. Seeing Bai Qi stand up to dig, he followed suit.
“You young people have good stamina; still searching for treasure here,” said Pan Dawei, who was leaning against the dirt wall, covering his head and smoking, “As an old brother, I feel like my bones are going to shatter.”
Bai Qi didn’t look away as he swiftly extracted one core after another.
He had no idea when everyone had discovered the use of the cores, but he didn’t want to share this ‘cheap’ experience with anyone right now.
Tian Hai glanced at Pan Dawei but didn’t say anything and continued to dig.
The cores they dug out were all handed to Tang Ruo, who would clean them with bottled water after receiving them.
“Back in the day, when I was chasing after girls, I couldn’t afford nice things, so I dug up a few pebbles and drilled holes in them…”
“Hey, don’t say that! A necklace made from little pebbles is still pretty…”
“I gave it to that girl, and her face turned all shy…”
As Pan Dawei continued to reminisce, a sudden ‘smack’ interrupted him.
His cigarette fell, and his face swelled: “…Wife… you’re here…”
“Who did you give pebbles to… Hmm? You seem quite lost in your memories…”
“Wife, you misunderstood! I was just a kid, how would I know… You know I’m the most upright person… We’re already an old married couple…”
“You still think of yourself as an old man? Our daughter is already old enough to get married, and you’re still eyeing an eighteen-year-old cutie…”
“…I swear, I definitely didn’t…”
Pan Dawei was pulled away by his wife, and their conversation gradually faded into the distance.
