Rebirth of the Last Days: Double Pets

Chapter 28 - Youth

On the other side, as Bai Qi and Tang Ruo stepped outside, they suddenly found that the zombies outside were much more tolerable.

Zombies, when they want to eat you, will come directly at you. However, people who want your belongings won’t be so straightforward—they’ll go through rounds of negotiations, waste time with pleasantries, and engage in unnecessary back-and-forth.

Tang Ruo followed behind Bai Qi, helping to distract the zombies in front, feeling a bit disgruntled.

Her yogurt was still in Bai Qi’s bag!

Such an item, which decreases in quantity with each bottle consumed, why didn’t she bring it back first?

A miscalculation, indeed.

Even after they got into the car, Tang Ruo’s lips remained pursed.

Bai Qi glanced at her, quickly understood the reason, and with a slight smirk, said, “At your age, acting cute is quite shameful.”

Whether acting cute is shameful often depends on one’s appearance.

Although Bai Qi said this, he found Tang Ruo’s pouty, cute expression quite charming.

She was indeed quite young, just recently turned eighteen.

Tang Ruo glanced at Bai Qi and obediently closed her mouth.

Bai Qi patted Tang Ruo’s head and said, “We’ll get it later.”

Tang Ruo smiled and showed her teeth. “You said it.”

She wasn’t really angry. After all, Bai Qi’s alma mater had plenty of supplies and the capability to collect more. Giving them the two bags of supplies was only right.

She had never been a petty person.

The two of them drove off.

Sports cars had their advantages; they were indeed very stylish.

However, in the apocalypse, sports cars were the least practical four-wheel vehicles. They had low ground clearance and couldn’t handle rough terrain. They also had limited space and couldn’t carry much. But they were the least likely to be stolen, as there were so many of them on the streets now.

Many car owners abandoned their sports cars halfway and switched to off-road vehicles. The next day, they would often find that their recovered or newly acquired off-road vehicles had vanished again…

Bai Qi wasn’t worried at all about the transportation issue. He didn’t want to wake up and find the car missing, which is why he hadn’t switched to another vehicle before.

The road had been somewhat cleared by the military and was a bit wider, but there were still many abandoned cars along the way.

They changed to a very ordinary off-road vehicle on the road (as they hadn’t found a better one), since the road conditions were unknown. The off-road vehicle was better suited to handle complex terrain.

They didn’t stop much along the way, opening the map and following the signs, planning to stock up on supplies in H City before heading towards A City.

Since going to A City required passing through H City.

Actually, Bai Qi’s desire to seize a villa in A City had diminished a lot. With enough supplies in hand, any safe place could serve as a temporary refuge.

Normally, driving to H City would take about half an hour, but now, with so many zombies on the road and poor road conditions, they stopped and dealt with zombies whenever they encountered a less zombie-infested area.

Bai Qi stabbed a zombie in the head with a knife and handed a crystal core to Tang Ruo.

Tang Ruo looked at the crystal core and said, “It seems like today’s crystal cores are a bit easier to find than yesterday’s.”

Bai Qi nodded. “It’s related to how long the zombies have been turned.”

Tang Ruo put the crystal core into her space and took out a bottle of water, handing it to him. “So will every zombie’s brain always have a crystal core?”

Bai Qi took a sip of water. “Yes, soon enough, even the ability users will know that there are these things in the zombies’ brains.”

In his previous life, when he arrived at the base three months late, everyone had already discovered the crystal cores.

Tang Ruo said, “Then we should collect more while we can.”

The two continued to deal with zombies and collect crystal cores.

As they fought and stopped intermittently, it took them three hours to cross the bridge leading to the city.

They had lunch in the car, and Bai Qi was about to continue driving when Tang Ruo stopped him. “Wait, look at that person…”

Bai Qi followed Tang Ruo’s gaze and saw a sixteen or seventeen-year-old boy surrounded by a group of zombies, dazzling with lightning-based abilities that crackled and flashed impressively.

“Do you think we’ve seen him somewhere before?” Tang Ruo tilted her head, still pondering.

She had really met very few people in this world.

Bai Qi said, “That’s the son of Security Guard Tian from the previous neighborhood.”

“Right, no wonder he looks familiar,” Tang Ruo remembered that she had given them two bottles of water before. “But why is he here alone?”

Bai Qi didn’t answer and helped Tang Ruo adjust her seatbelt.

There could be two scenarios for someone being here alone: one, he is leveling up by fighting zombies like them, and the other is that he has lost his father and ended up here.

However, given his lifeless demeanor, it was more likely that the second scenario was true.

Tang Ruo saw that the boy looked quite unwell and felt a pang of sympathy. The reason she had given water to them before was because they seemed simple and honest, leaving a good impression.

“How about we give him a ride? His abilities seem quite powerful, and having an extra person could be safer.”

Bai Qi turned his attention back to the battle scene.

Perhaps the boy was prepared to fight to the death, as none of the surrounding zombies could approach him. Instead, they were all knocked to the ground one by one. However, with so many zombies, the boy might not be able to hold out much longer.

Although lightning abilities are powerful, they can also be depleted.

Bai Qi drove the car over, and Tang Ruo used her mental power to control a few zombies, while Bai Qi used ice crystals to eliminate four of them.

The dual ice crystals were a new discovery for Bai Qi. Compared to yesterday’s, today’s ice crystals had greater power and accuracy, allowing him to kill two zombies at once.

Tang Ruo also felt her mental power was more proficient.

However, neither of them had time to discuss this now.

After the three of them dealt with the surrounding zombies, Bai Qi got out of the car to collect the crystal cores.

In the post-apocalyptic world, the most inspiring phrase is: If there’s a bargain, grab it, you fool.

He condensed his energy, and a small ice blade appeared in his hand. Although it was much smaller than the level-three ice blade he had created in his previous life, it was still a significant breakthrough. In his previous life, he only managed to condense an ice blade after reaching level three.

Now, he had managed to produce an ice blade at level one.

Seeing Bai Qi collecting the crystal cores, Tang Ruo walked over to the boy and handed him a bottle of water from her backpack. “Was your fighting style just now a suicide mission?”

The boy looked at Tang Ruo in confusion. When he saw the water in her hand and recognized Bai Qi, whom he had seen many times in the neighborhood and who had been regarded as the “ideal child” by his father, he showed a bit of emotion. “My… my dad was bitten to death by these monsters.”

Tang Ruo hesitated slightly, unsure of what to say to comfort him.

The security guard she had seen a few times in the neighborhood was now gone. Although she had never experienced the feeling of losing a father, having lost her grandmother, she could understand the boy’s current emotional state.

“Just because your dad died, does that mean you want to kill yourself?” Bai Qi, with quick hands, finished collecting the spoils in no time.

The boy looked at Bai Qi, blinked slowly, and lowered his head. “I’m not committing suicide. I’m… I’m avenging my dad.”

Tang Ruo pushed the water into his hand. “But what you’re doing is no different from committing suicide.”
