Chapter 269: [Bearer of Fates (I)]

Equi is the Goddess of Balance. She was captured by the Higher Gods and was kept in a spatial prison bound by fates. Though when Adam destroyed various fates in Border Town, and changed the course of destiny, it allowed her to escape, at the price of majority of her powers, through the prison.

Now here in Coast City, she is searching for the guy, a Fate Weaver, who has her [Chalice of Equilibrium]. Though the situation has started to become more complex, so are her ways around the city and her objectives.

"This world is a board game for the Primordials. And I, the Goddess of Balance, am the only guide that was sent for the fate weavers to reach their destination…. Alas… it's too late. For this world can't be protected anymore… such is fate, that even I can't change."- Equi.

[Equi's POV]

The cold wind brushed against my face as I covered it with a black cloth. My eyes looked at the current state of the city, dark, enshrouded with death all around. As the bearer of the eyes of fate, I could see the threads of fate that guide one to their destiny.

And all those who dwell upon this land now carry only one thread on their mark.

The Black thread of death.

But as I close my eyes of fate, and look at the expression of the humans around me. The angels around me, and the demons that walked among them. The dark mages, and the gods that observed everything from a distance.

They were all happy.

It was common sense that fates that linger around, carry some emotions with them. And with the darkness that shrouds the entire city, there should be nothing but grief and sadness here.

Yet, there was none.

They laughed as if they had ages to live. They sang in the night, and danced till morning. They worked throughout the day trying to do something that I couldn't understand.

"But still. Angels and demons walking together? Just what has become of the world while I was away?" I mumbled as I wondered if the world had entered an era where the demons and angels weren't going against each other at first sight.

Honestly, I don't know if it was a good development or bad for Zarraf.

"But then again. It doesn't matter," I sighed as I knew. None of this matters, for this city is about to reach its end. Something big is going to happen, something that no one can prevent. It's sad. But, none can fight against their destiny.

And with those thoughts in mind, I walked away from there, towards the city gate. And then to another place, far far away from here. Living here means that even my life would end.

The Higher Gods I met won't do anything to me as long as I don't restart my religion. Though I doubt I am going to do it after the betrayals I have received. Since the world was going to end anyway, I should find a place where I can relax in my last moments.

"Guess, my Chalice needs to wait," I spoke in a regretful tone before taking another step towards the gate. While it could restore more than half of my powers, for now, I guess I am still not fated to have it.

And as I was hastening my steps away from this city of death, a voice called me out.

"There is nowhere to run."

My steps halted as I looked in the direction of the voice, an alleyway, where a man was standing there with a tired smile on his face.

It was a face that I didn't knew, but somehow his description matched a certain legend that I have heard on my travels to here. And even though I didn't have any proof, I still believed he was the same person that was mentioned in those stories that the travelling bards told. Adam Wesker.

The guy known as the Phantom. The being who was able to stop a demi-god from entering into the mortal realm. And also the guy that I believed, had the current possession of my chalice.

"Laplace is going to destroy the world. He will cut apart everything, break all realms. There is nothing that can stop him from initiating the end of the world," he spoke with the same smile as before, with a tiresome expression that seems to be carrying a heavy burden.

"So there is still a fate weaver that wants to save the world, huh?" I spoke sarcastically. Almost all the other fate weavers that I have met wanted to end it all. Some chose to stay neutral, and among those who wanted to save the world, turned tired by the cruelty that the world presented them, and chose to go against it instead.

Though it seems, one of those Fate Weavers, the demon lord Laplace, is going to be the one who is going to end it all.

Doesn't really surprise me.

"And why are you telling me this?" I asked. Does he know about me? Could be. Could not be. Maybe he wants my help to solve this? But I can't change fate once it has been decided. It is impossible… or at least that's what I used to think until what I witnessed a few weeks ago.

'Let's hear his answer first,' I decided but…

"I don't know," he looked down at the floor, as if thinking about something, contemplating to the best of his abilities. And then he looked at me again and continued,

"Perhaps it is a better choice for you to know this than you not knowing it?"

He spoke. Or perhaps he asked? Though he doesn't seem to be asking me, but himself.

"Is that so? Are you telling me that there is meaning in me knowing something that I can already predict?" I said with slight haughtiness. I am the goddess of balance, the bearer of fates. It would be more odd if I couldn't predict it. This time, I simply didn't bother to. Why? Because what's the point of knowing something when you can't change it.

Though as I was thinking, he took a deep breath before his smile changed from that of a burdened one to one that seemed to be relieved for some reason. And then taking out something from his pocket he threw it towards me.

It was a chalice shaped artifact. Something that I had been very… very familiar with. Something that I had created once, using more than half of my magic, and something that was more than just a part of my body and soul.

The Chalice of Equilibrium.

My chalice.
