Re-Awakening: I Became a Pay To Win Boss Monster

Chapter 134: Helping Zafira Out

Rael was in a bit of a situation.

He was sure he had bought Evelyn the right path, but she somehow got the one that was most expensive.

Yeah... I don't even know anymore. Rael sighed as he picked Evelyn up and brought her back to the palace.

She went from a potential subordinate to a VIP in mere minutes, so if he wanted her to remain loyal, he had to not give her a reason to leave him.

He walked around the palace for a bit, trying to find someplace suitable. However, guest rooms were either full or not secure enough to leave a vulnerable woman unattended.

God knows what happens here, I'd rather not risk it, Rael thought, and arrived in the throne room.

Rael went up to the throne, and beside it, he bought a bean bag chair and tossed Evelyn onto it.

Since it was comfortable enough and likely the safest place in the entire palace, he left her there for the moment.

Leaving Evelyn there, he walked into the room where Zafira was buried in files.

Yet the moment he entered, he was met with a document flying straight at him.

Rael simply stepped to the side, caught the documents, walked over to Zafira, and placed them on her desk.

She had a frustrated look on her face, and even though he was literally right in front of her, it almost seemed like she didn't notice him.

Zafira was focused, and her cheeks were puffed up, almost like a chipmunk's.

It was honestly pretty cute, so he couldn't resist leaning in and pinching them.

"Ow!" Zafira recoiled in surprise.

She flicked her eyes toward him, and her expression immediately went from frustration to embarrassment. "Sorry... I didn't notice when you came in."

"It's alright... rather, is everything going fine? You seem a little..."

"Angry? No, I'm not angry," Zafira finished with a cracking smile. "In fact, I'm so happy, I wish I could stick this stack of documents up the king's a—"

"Ahem..." Rael cut her off as he sat down beside her. "Can I help?"

Zafira let out a sigh as she leaned back, tossing a document over to him.

"Read this, you'll understand why I'm just a tad bit upset."

Rael hummed in amusement and flipped over the document, reading it thoroughly.

But not even a few pages in, he realized the reason she was upset.

"Even in death... he still found a way to be a thorn in your ass, eh?" Rael chuckled as he continued reading it.

"I know, right?" Zafira complained, throwing her hands up dramatically with a look of disbelief. "A billion Trell. Every month. To a fabric boutique that's been closed since last winter. Clearly, the previous king was a visionary."

Rael chuckled. "If I had to guess, then there are plenty of these cases lying around."

At his words, Zafira tugged at his sleeve and then pointed to a particular corner where most of the crystal constructs were gathered.

His brows twitched. "Those documents..."

"Yes... they're all fraud and embezzlement," Zafira replied flatly. "Every last one just as dumb as this one, if not worse."

"I can imagine..." Rael trailed off, putting the document back on the desk.

Yet Zafira merely picked it up and chucked it into the corner where the Constructs were gathered.

Then, she proceeded to cover her face with her hands, seemingly tired of it all.

"How can a king be so incompetent..." she muttered. "It's really not that hard. Step one, don't make idiotic decisions. That's it."

She's also cute when she vents... Rael thought with a smile.

"Oh right." Zafira turned toward him. "What was with that broadcast earlier? You have some sort of key?"

"Yep, though I'll only show it to you once I set up a few things, hope you don't mind," Rael replied softly.

Zafira shook her head. "It's fine, though I could use some help."

"Anything," Rael said, and in the next moment, he kind of wished he hadn't agreed to it in the first place.

She leaned down, and to his surprise, there was a construct acting as some sort of paperweight.

But despite that, she merely petted the construct, then picked up a 'few' documents and slammed them down on the table.

The 'few' numbered hundreds, and from her cheeky smile, it was obvious she knew what she was roping him into.

"Can I take a rainchec—"

"Nope~" Zafira smirked, pushing the documents toward him. "They're not difficult to sort. Here."

She tossed him a red royal seal, matching his eyes.

"The rulings that seem fine, leave them. Those that are stupid, mark them and just toss them toward the constructs," Zafira instructed. "If there are any that really stand out, give them to me. I'll look them over.

"Damn... this feels like some royal lesson," Rael remarked, earning a giggle from Zafira.

"You can think of it that way," Zafira said, her smirk widening. "Our initial deal was for you to be a king who doesn't do anything. But clearly, you had other plans. Might as well broaden your horizons, don't you think?"

"You're not wrong..." Rael trailed off, sighing.

Zafira tapped the table with her fingers, timing the tapping with the sound of the ticking clock on the wall.

Even in boredom, she gave off a surreal presence that made him remain quiet, only admiring her occasional gestures from a distance.

Yet, his gaze was swiftly noticed by Zafira, who merely tilted her head and smiled.

"I'll take a few minutes off. Thanks again."

"Don't worry about it," Rael replied, and dug straight into the cases.

They were a bore to read through, since all of them were filled to the brim with incoherent clauses, some of which repeated just to fill space.

Yet in the midst of all that, Zafira was resting a hand on her chin, twirling her hair with the other.

And of course, her gaze was directed toward him, making it a bit hard to focus.

"Focus, Rael," Zafira teased, causing his brows to twitch.

Jeez... just what goes on in that pretty little head of hers?
