Quirkless Hero

Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Bajiquan.

What to do in the next ten months?

This was Midoriya Izuku's main concern. The hero course exam at U.A. High School included not only a written test but also a combat test, and this combat test didn't allow any items. The students had to rely solely on their "Quirk."

"What should I do?"

This was the question Midoriya was pondering. Without equipment and tools, his only advantage was his physical fitness. So the only path was clear.

"Martial Arts"

The fighting techniques passed down from China were popular and impressive in this superhuman society. Although Japan had similar fighting techniques like "Karate," they couldn't adapt to the diverse Quirks in this superhuman society and had become obsolete.

For example, the sludge enemy Midoriya encountered a few days ago had a fluid body. Simple grappling, throwing, and wrestling techniques were basically suicidal. In contrast, fighting techniques with strong explosive power and lethality were what people pursued now.

With this in mind, Midoriya Izuku's goal was clear. His physical fitness, which he had trained since childhood, was already at its peak. What he lacked was the fighting techniques to fully utilize his strength.

"Let's do it..."

Midoriya nodded, confirming his next steps.

Back home, he mentioned this to his mom, Midoriya Inko. He couldn't hide this from her, and there was no need to.

"What, you want to learn 'Martial Arts,' Deku?"

"Because after this semester, I'll be moving up to high school. I want to try applying to U.A. High School."

While eating, Midoriya told his mom about his desire to learn martial arts.

"But... won't this be too hard for you?"

Midoriya Inko was worried about her child. He didn't spend much time with friends and focused solely on studying, always getting perfect scores in exams. While this made her proud, it also made her sad.

Midoriya Inko also knew that her child secretly did physical training, which made her worry that Izuku's body might not handle it.

"Don't worry, Mom. I'll make more friends and play with them during this time."

"Alright..."

Midoriya Inko reluctantly agreed because she knew her child had few friends. Even Bakugo Katsuki, who grew up with him, didn't play with Izuku anymore.

And so, Midoriya Izuku's journey to learn martial arts began. He had only ten months to master at least one useful technique.

"Is it here?"

Taking the subway to a neighboring city, Midoriya followed the map to his destination.

In front of him was an old-fashioned house with a large plaque above the door, with two bold characters, "Bajiquan."

Bajiquan, the martial art Midoriya Izuku wanted to learn, was highly regarded in Japan. He found information about it online.

There was a well-known Bajiquan dojo in Japan, not far from Midoriya's city. It took him about an hour by subway to get there.

After confirming the location, Midoriya Izuku was about to step inside when a hand suddenly rested on his shoulder.

"Are you here to learn Bajiquan?"

"Huh?"

Midoriya turned around in surprise. It was a boy with short yellow hair, about his age, with a sunny smile, wearing a white training uniform, and a big, fleshy tail behind him.

"Sorry, I'm Ojiro Mashirao, a student at the Bajiquan dojo and the master's son."

"Oh, oh!"

Surprised, Midoriya Izuku introduced himself to Ojiro Mashirao. After learning that Midoriya was indeed there to learn Bajiquan, Ojiro Mashirao led him inside.

Inside the dojo, Midoriya saw many students in white training uniforms, being strictly instructed by a middle-aged man who looked a bit like Ojiro Mashirao.

"Mashirao, you're back. Who's this kid?"

The middle-aged man with a big, fleshy tail saw his son return and asked about Midoriya Izuku.

"Dad, this is Midoriya Izuku. He wants to learn Bajiquan."

"Got it."

Hearing Ojiro Mashirao's introduction, the master nodded in acknowledgment. It wasn't unusual; his Bajiquan dojo was well-known in Japan, and many people came to learn Bajiquan.

"Since we have a new junior, introduce yourself to the senior students!"

The master loudly instructed Midoriya, making him flustered. He quickly bowed and introduced himself to the students.

"Um... my name is Midoriya Izuku!!"

Seeing Midoriya's silly introduction, some of the students couldn't help but laugh, but they were quickly silenced by a stern look from the master.

"What are you laughing at! When you first came, some of you couldn't even introduce yourselves properly. Get back to training!"

With the master's order, the students didn't dare slack off and resumed their training, leaving Midoriya a bit flustered and unsure of what to do.

"If you want to learn Bajiquan, you need to see what it's all about. Mashirao, take him inside. I'll be there soon."

"Got it, Dad!"

Ojiro Mashirao followed the order and led the confused Midoriya Izuku to the dojo's backyard, where various training tools were placed. What caught Midoriya's attention the most was a large steel plate mounted on a stand.

Midoriya went closer to look and saw fist marks of varying depths on the steel plate, and even two large holes. He checked and confirmed that the steel plate was about 5cm thick and real.

"What's this?" Midoriya Izuku asked Ojiro Mashirao in surprise.

"This is the Bajiquan dojo's strength testing platform. Students who feel they've made progress can test themselves here."

"Uh..."

Midoriya Izuku was speechless. A 5cm steel plate... breaking it without a Quirk seemed almost superhuman.

"Dad, you're here." At Mashirao's call, Midoriya saw the dojo master arrive in the backyard, wiping his fists.

"Alright, kid! Let me show you the power of Bajiquan!"

Midoriya quickly stepped aside, and the master stood in front of the testing platform. He took a horse stance and focused his energy.

With Midoriya watching nervously, the master unleashed a powerful punch like a tiger pouncing.

The steel plate on the testing platform was punched through, leaving a large hole, and Midoriya's jaw dropped in shock.

Of course, it wasn't about sheer power. All Might's punch could create a storm, but that was with a Quirk.

What amazed Midoriya Izuku was that the master, like his son, had a tail as their Quirk, yet they broke the thick steel plate with just their human body. This strengthened Midoriya's resolve to learn Bajiquan.

"Now there are three holes, hahaha!"

The master laughed for some reason, and Mashirao quickly explained to Midoriya Izuku.

"One of the holes was made by a senior brother when he graduated recently. Dad has a bit of OCD and was bothered by the irregularity of the two holes, so he wanted to add another one to make it look better."

"By the way, that senior brother's name is Togata Mirio!"
