Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Testing the Edge of the Law
"Izuku, why are you back?"
At home, Midoriya Inko was preparing luggage when she found her son had returned home. She was confused.
"Mom, aren't you supposed to be going to America to stay with Dad for a while? I'm here to help you pack."
"You child... really."
Midoriya Inko looked at Izuku with a touch of emotion. Her son had always been so obedient and well-behaved. The fact that Izuku didn't inherit a "Quirk" had always been a pain for her, but now, she had come to terms with it.
"This child is already so outstanding. He doesn't need his parents' worry anymore. He's grown up."
Her husband had called late the night before, saying that she should come to America to stay with him for a while and that the plane tickets were already booked for the next day.
Though it was a bit rushed, Midoriya Inko realized that there wasn't much for her to do in Japan. Having stayed home as a housewife to care for Izuku, and with him now living in the U.A. High School dorms, it seemed like a good opportunity to go and spend time with her husband in America.
The flight couldn't be delayed, so Midoriya Inko hurriedly began packing. She had planned to contact Izuku after finishing, but to her surprise, he had returned home.
....
After packing everything, Midoriya Izuku picked up a large suitcase with one hand and walked downstairs, while his mother, Midoriya Inko, wiped away a few tears, touched by the moment.
"Time flies... you've grown up so quickly, from such a small child to this big..."
Midoriya Izuku, along with his mother, went downstairs, hailed a taxi, and carefully placed the luggage inside. Midoriya Inko also got into the taxi.
"Mom... goodbye..."
"You child, why are you saying goodbye~~ I'm just going to stay with Dad in America for a while. I'll be back soon!"
"Mm... please say hello to Dad for me."
As the taxi drove off, Midoriya Inko headed for the airport, while Midoriya Izuku could only wave goodbye for the last time.
With his mother leaving Japan, the one worry Izuku had was lifted. But there was still something important he had to do.
At the hospital, Aizawa Shouta was helplessly peeling an apple. The little girl seemed to really like apples. Although she didn't directly ask for one, Aizawa, as a hero, easily saw through the girl's thoughts and decided to get to work.
"Big brother... has he not come yet?"
Eri, looking out the window, remembered the kind big brother from yesterday who had said he would visit today. But now, it was already nearly sunset.
Eri stayed in the hospital with hero "Eraserhead" acting as her caretaker. Only his "Erasure" Quirk could prevent any sudden accidents. Hado Nejire and Togata Mirio also stayed in the hospital to help Aizawa Shouta.
Hado Nejire had been going back and forth between the hospital and the police station, hoping to find the mother who had abandoned her daughter. Only Eri's mother could help this poor child.
Meanwhile, Togata Mirio stayed by as a caretaker, in case the "League of Villains" tried anything with Eri. He also worked hard to make the little girl laugh by making silly faces. As a hero, he believed in bringing smiles to everyone, so he made sure to learn plenty of humor techniques.
However, in the morning, a sudden phone call from Nighteye reached Togata Mirio. After hearing some unexpected news, his face turned dark, and he rushed to U.A. High School.
At that time, Eri didn't understand why the big brother's face looked so scary so suddenly, but Aizawa Shouta suspected something bad had happened.
After cutting the apple into small pieces, Aizawa Shouta handed some to the little girl next to him, his usual lifeless expression unchanged. He said in his usual deadpan tone:
"Eat up."
"Mm! Thank you, kind uncle!" Eri politely thanked him and happily stuffed the apple into her mouth, while Aizawa Shouta remained with his dead fish eyes, though a small smile formed on the corner of his lips.
"Eri, sorry I'm late."
The door to the hospital room opened, and a panting Midoriya Izuku stood at the door, having rushed there in a hurry.
"Ah! Big brother, you finally came!!"
"Sorry to keep you waiting."
Eri excitedly raised both her small hands, and Midoriya gave an apologetic smile. He had promised her yesterday, and he had to keep his word.
"Aizawa-sensei, thank you for taking care of her."
"You think you're bothering me? You should have All Might come here and say that to me in person."
Aizawa Shouta rolled his eyes and didn't want to say more. All Might was always the one finding trouble for him.
"Eri, how are you feeling now?"
Midoriya Izuku asked, and the little girl looked up at him, thinking for a moment before responding:
"There won't be any scary bad guys hurting Eri. And kind uncles peel apples for Eri to eat. One big brother kept trying to make Eri laugh, but now he's nowhere to be found?"
"Yes! I told you, everyone will protect and help you."
Placing his hand gently on Eri's head as if petting a kitten, Midoriya smiled and said to her:
"From now on, you don't need to worry about those bad guys bothering you. The heroes and the police will catch them all."
"Mm..."
Although she wasn't sure if it was true, the little girl was willing to believe the kind big brother because he had always treated her well, so everything he said must be true.
"Aizawa-sensei, I'll leave it to you. I'll head out now."
"Go back to school, it's getting late."
Midoriya Izuku said his final goodbye. Aizawa waved him off, urging him to leave quickly as it was almost dark. As a teacher, he had to focus on his responsibilities. Midoriya nodded to both of them before leaving.
"Uh-oh!"
Eri suddenly shouted, making Aizawa Shouta almost jump in surprise. He then heard the little girl talking to herself.
"I forgot to ask that big brother... what his name is."
"So that's what it is..."
Aizawa Shouta sighed helplessly. "This is how kids are..." He didn't want to take care of this little one. With his right hand on Eri's head, Aizawa slowly spoke:
"His name is Midoriya Izuku, and he's a 'hero.'"

Outside the hospital, Midoriya Izuku stopped in his tracks. In front of him stood someone, a red cape fluttering in the wind. Togata Mirio stood before him.
"I got a call from Sir Night Eye, and rushed back to the school. I found Chisaki's severed arms in your dorm room."
"I couldn't find you anywhere on campus. Then I heard from others that you left the school, and in the end, I figured... you would come here."
"Yeah... Mirio-senpai."
Summer days always seem to bring sudden rainstorms, and before a storm hits, a strong wind often blows as a warning.
The gust of wind lifted Togata Mirio's red cape, and it also caused Midoriya Izuku's hair to become messy, covering his eyes.
"Why are you doing this? Wouldn't it be better to just leave it to All Might and the police?!"
"The 'League of Villains' and 'Shie Hassaikai' are after All Might. If I don't act, Eri will be hurt again, and I can't allow that to happen."
Midoriya Izuku's words made Togata Mirio feel deeply uncomfortable. This younger person... he wanted to be a hero more than anyone, but his actions now were completely destroying his last chance to become one.
"Is it worth it...?"
"Of course it's worth it. If I can't save even a little girl, then what am I even fighting for?!"
Midoriya Izuku said this with his head lowered, not daring to meet Mirio's eyes. But today, action had to be taken.
The future Sir Night Eye foresaw—although he didn't want to admit it—Midoriya was getting closer and closer to that terrible future.
"Midoriya, you're an enemy now... I have to arrest you."
"Yeah... I understand. So come at me!"
Midoriya Izuku finally showed a faint smile on his face as he faced Togata Mirio.
"I want to see, Mirio-senpai. You've inherited the true power of 'One For All.' Let me see the full power of All Might's 'successor.'"
