Chapter 129: No Hit Win
John faced his opponent with a confident smile, his Gardevoir poised and ready for battle. Across the field, Norman, the Petalburg Gym Leader, had chosen his final Pokemon—a hulking Slaking, notorious for its laziness but equally formidable when roused to fight.
Norman's tone was resolute. "Slaking, use Fling!"
John, ever calm under pressure, gave a measured command. "Gardevoir, Hypnosis!"
The graceful Psychic-type raised its delicate hands, drawing hypnotic circles in the air. Invisible ripples of energy spread toward Slaking. The hulking beast, clutching a chunk of rock for its attack, faltered. Its drooping eyes betrayed its desire for rest after enduring two grueling battles earlier.
The rock was tossed haphazardly in Gardevoir's direction, missing by a wide margin before Slaking collapsed onto the ground with a resounding thud. Its loud snores echoed across the battlefield.
John smirked, his plan having worked flawlessly. "Nice work, Gardevoir. Now, let's finish this! Use—"
"I surrender," Norman interrupted abruptly, raising a hand.
John froze mid-command, stunned by the sudden capitulation. "What? You're giving up?"
Norman chuckled, scratching the back of his head. "Once Slaking falls asleep, it's practically impossible to wake him, even if you knock him out cold. Let's just call it a win for you."
John sighed, running a hand through his hair. "If I had known that, I wouldn't have let Blaziken and Greninja struggle against it earlier."
With the match concluded, John was transported back to his room. He glanced at the screen of his Gameboy, where the post-battle rewards were being tallied.
[Defeated Slaking LV 52. Gained 7,334 experience.]
[Defeated the Petalburg Gym Leader Norman. Received 23,300 Pokedollars.]
[Norman: Well done, son. As expected of you.]
[Received the Balance Badge! Surf has been upgraded to Secret Surf.]
[Norman: So, what did you think of my Slaking? Impressive, huh? Are you interested in training one yourself?]
[Yes/No]
John's eyes lit up as he selected "Yes" without hesitation.
[Norman: Excellent! As expected of my son. I've prepared a special Slakoth for you in advance.]
[Norman: Here's the "Facade" TM and my personal notes on raising Normal-type Pokemon. Make sure to read them carefully!]
[Norman: I look forward to battling you again at the Pokemon Championship someday.]
John couldn't help but chuckle. "A Slakoth, huh? Guess I shouldn't have expected him to hand me a fully trained Slaking on a silver platter."
He knew that raising Pokemon from their earliest stages made the bond stronger. Slakoth would be no exception. However, since his party was full, the newly gifted Pokemon had been sent to his PC. He'd have to stop by the Pokemon Center to retrieve it.
Before leaving the gym, John approached the screen where a familiar character stood—a girl in a white dress. He initiated a conversation.
[Jasmine: If you come to Johto, remember to visit me.]
That was all she said. John noted it mentally. It seemed this part of the story wouldn't progress until he reached the Johto Region. For now, he had more pressing matters to attend to.
[Secret Surf: Power: 120, Effect: Traps the target in a Whirlpool.]
The additional power and negative condition were substantial upgrades. Eager to teach the move to his Pokemon, John opened his study panel and found that not only could Greninja learn it, but also several other surprising candidates, like Garchomp and Aggron.
"Looks like I'll need to find a teacher for Whirlpool first," John mused. 'Riverstone University should have someone who can teach it. They're known for their expertise in Water-type Pokemon.'
Back at the Pokemon Center, John accessed the PC and retrieved the Slakoth. Examining its stats, he was impressed:
[Slakoth (Normal-Type)]
Level: 5]
[Ability: Truant (Can only act every other turn)]
[IVs: HP (31), Attack (31), Defense (31), Sp. Atk (31), Sp. Def (31), Speed (31)]
[Moves: Yawn, Slack Off]
[Held Item: Oran Berry]
"A perfect 6IV Slakoth," John noted with a grin. "Norman really went all out for me."
He could already envision the powerhouse it would become as a Slaking. But for now, it was just a sleepy little Slakoth, ready to be nurtured and trained.
John recalled something from the anime—a place called "Slakoth Banana Paradise," where countless Slakoths were raised alongside fresh banana crops. "I wonder if Norman owns that place," he thought aloud. It would explain the quality of the Pokemon he'd received.
As he prepared for the next leg of his journey, John couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement. With the Balance Badge in hand, he was one step closer to the Pokemon Championship. But first, he had to plan his next move, starting with mastering Whirlpool and unlocking the full potential of his new Secret Surf.
The road ahead was filled with challenges, but John welcomed them with open arms. After all, becoming a Pokemon Champion wasn't just about strength—it was about strategy, determination, and the bonds forged with every Pokemon along the way.
