Chapter : Chapter 00: A Frosty Challenge
Victor Frost, a seasoned Pokémon Trainer known for his mastery over Ice-type Pokémon, strode confidently into the bustling Pokémon Center of the famous Battle Ranch. At around 60 years old, Victor stood tall and lean, his imposing presence underscored by his elegant, yet utilitarian attire: a sleek, silver-gray trench coat adorned with subtle frost patterns, and polished black boots. His icy-blue eyes scanned the interior, expecting to see the familiar, comforting face of Nurse Joy behind the counter.
Instead, Victor was met with an unexpected sight. A young man, around 35 years old, stood at the counter. He was tall and athletic, his blonde hair tousled in a carefree manner. Dressed in a casual sports t-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops, the young man exuded an easygoing, almost nonchalant aura.
Victor approached the counter, his expression a mix of confusion and mild irritation. "Excuse me," he said, his voice carrying the weight of his years of experience, "I don't see Nurse Joy here. Is she around?"
The young man flashed a friendly grin, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Oh, Nurse Joy? She's taking a break right now. I'm the substitute.
"Can you tell me when she will be back?" Victor asked.
"Well, if you want to know more about Nurse Joy's whereabouts, you'll need to beat me in a Pokémon battle."
Victor raised an eyebrow, a chuckle escaping his lips. "You've heard of me, I take it?"
The young man's grin widened. "Of course, I know who you are. Victor Frost, the Ice Master himself. Not every day we get such a notable trainer around here."
"You know me, but who are you?"
"You can call me Max."
"Okay, Max. If you know me that well, you probably know that I welcome any challenged!" Victor boasted.
"I'm counting on it. And you should know, I'm not going to go easy on you just because you're an old-timer."
Victor's eyes narrowed with amusement. "Very well, Max. I accept your challenge. Let's see if your skills match your bravado."
With that, they moved to the adjacent battle field. Max lead the way, his casual demeanor contrasting sharply with the intensity of the upcoming battle. Victor followed him, his movements precise and deliberate. As they prepared for the clash, Victor couldn't help but admire the young man's confidence. But he was sure of himself as he was skilled and experienced trainer.
However, the next minutes showed the real skills of both opponents.
The battle had reached its climax in the vibrant arena, the sunlight streaming down on the battlefield, casting long shadows and adding a shimmering sheen to the scene. Victor Frost's Claydol floated gracefully in the center, its eyes glowing with a deep blue intensity. Across from it, Max's Torterra stood firm, its massive form casting a shadow over the ground, embodying the essence of nature's strength.
Victor, keenly aware of the disadvantage the sunny weather posed for him as Torterra's Grass typing allowed it to boost itself, had strategically chosen Claydol to mitigate this. He called out, "Claydol, Ice Beam!"
Three beams of icy-blue energy coalesced in front of Claydol, each one crackling with frost and chilling the air around them. They shot forward with precision, aimed directly at Torterra's massive form.
Max remained nonchalant, his hands casually resting in his pockets. As the Ice Beams closed in, Torterra suddenly seemed to shimmer with rock-type energy. Without any verbal command from Max, Torterra began to generate three white circles of swirling energy around its body. Within these circles, rocky fragments began to materialize, their edges sharp and rugged.
As the Ice Beams approached, the rocky circles spun rapidly, launching a barrage of rocks at high speed. The Ice Beams collided with the incoming rocks, creating a dazzling display of ice and stone as they clashed mid-air. The rocks pummeled the Ice Beams with force, dissipating some of the cold energy and reducing the impact on Torterra.
Victor's eyes widened with a mixture of surprise and anxiety. He watched as Torterra's Rock Blast successfully countered his Ice Beam attack, the energy of the rocks deflecting much of the icy assault. "So, your Torterra knows how to counter-attack ice attacks. Impressive."
Max's relaxed demeanor remained unchanged and he shrugged. "Cooper has seen a battle or two."
Victor frowned slightly, realizing that the sun was adding an extra layer of complexity to the battle. The wild Pokémon watching from the sidelines seemed to murmur among themselves, intrigued by the high-level tactics and the fierce exchange of moves.
As Claydol and Torterra continued their clash, the outcome of the battle seemed increasingly uncertain. Victor's strategic acumen was being tested against Max's unconventional approach, making for a thrilling and unpredictable showdown.
Victor's frustration grew as Torterra, still enveloped in its rock-type energy, fired another barrage of Rock Blast towards Claydol. The rocks hurtled through the air with relentless force, aiming to overwhelm Claydol's defenses.
"Claydol!" Victor shouted, his voice tinged with urgency and concern. "Are you okay to continue? We need to find a way to turn this around!"
As he awaited a response, Victor's gaze shifted between his Pokémon and the oncoming Rock Blast. The previous moments of the battle had been a relentless exchange of strategies and counters, each move adding layers of complexity to the confrontation.
It was very frustrating. This was a 3-on-3 battle, but both trainers had already lost 2 of their Pokémon. Moreover, his opponent had told him in advance which Pokémon he would be using in the battle: Noctowl, Torterra, and Salazzle.
Victor, who came from a family specializing in Ice-types, had believed this would be an easy win. Torterra had a double disadvantage against Ice-type moves, Noctowl seemed like a weak Pokémon with Ice-type disadvantage as well, so only Salazzle could be a bit tricky. But the reality of fighting this man was devastating, as none of the three were pushovers.
The first round started with Salazzle against Beartic. Salazzle used Agility to boost its speed and then kept using Quick Attack, making it impossible for Beartic to hit her with Ice Beam or Ice Punch. Victor then ordered Beartic to use Avalanche across the battlefield, but Salazzle responded with a quick Disable, rendering Beartic's move useless. Before Beartic or Victor realized what was happening, Salazzle used Toxic to poison Beartic. With its boosted speed, Salazzle continued dodging Beartic's attacks and fired Venoshock several times. This attack was much more effective because it targeted an already poisoned opponent, and soon Beartic fainted.
This loss made Victor much more cautious. He chose Abomasnow and opened with Icy Wind. Salazzle used Fire Lash, which had a double advantage against the Grass/Ice type, but Abomasnow was able to counter with Stone Edge. Abomasnow used this attack repeatedly, and Salazzle was initially unable to come up with an effective strategy. Eventually, Salazzle managed to use Attract, which knocked Abomasnow out of balance. However, Salazzle underestimated her opponent. As she moved in to bite with Fire Fang, Abomasnow managed to snap out of its dazed state and use the powerful Fissure. This one-hit knockout ground move, which was also double-effective against the Fire/Poison lizard, won this round for Victor.
The next battle was Abomasnow versus Noctowl. Abomasnow used Icy Wind again, injuring the flying owl. But Noctowl quickly responded with Steel Wing, followed by Hypnosis, which put Abomasnow into a deep sleep. Victor tried to wake his Pokémon up, but to no avail. Noctowl used powerful Dream Eater, which is much stronger against sleeping targets. Noctowl used another Dream Eater, and this battle was over.
Next up was Claydol versus Noctowl. Victor quickly instructed his Pokémon to use Double Team, but Noctowl used Feather Dance, destroying the shadow clones and lowering Claydol's attack power. Noctowl then used Night Shade, a Ghost-type move that is super effective against the Psychic type and has high accuracy. Claydol replied with Ice Beam. As both moves met in the middle of the battlefield, they exploded with huge blast of smoke and dust. Noctowl used this distraction to charge up a powerful Sky Attack. But before it could land the move, Victor had Claydol use Rock Tomb. Luckily for Victor, this move managed to trap one of Noctowl's talons. Victor noticed this opportunity and took advantage of it. Claydol fired a powerful and super effective Charge Beam, knocking Noctowl out.
Now he was facing this Grass/Ground turtle, which already fired several Leaf Storms against Claydol. But the worst was the fact, that his opponent didn't give his Pokemon any commands, so all the time he had no idea which attack would come next.
"Victor Frost. You come from a renowned family known for its Ice-type Pokémon. Your distant cousin is the famous Wulfric from Snowbelle Gym. You were boasting that it is almost impossible to beat you. And now, here you are with only your last Pokémon standing. I'm wondering, is this the best you can do?" his opponent asked. It wasn't taunting; there was genuine interest in his voice.
"Ice Beam again!" shouted Victor instead of answering.
"Finish it," whispered his opponent, and Torterra fired Hyper Beam at Claydol. The attacks met in the middle of the battlefield, but it was obvious that Hyper Beam was much stronger. It evaporated the Ice Beam and continued toward Claydol.
"Claydol! Dodge it!!"
Claydol disappeared in a flash of white light.
But Torterra's eyes suddenly glowed blue, and the Hyper Beam changed direction, moving toward Claydol, who teleported 10 meters to the left.
"NO! Claydol, are you alright?!?"
But it was in vain. Claydol had already fainted. Torterra's body started to glow green, and a few weak green beams were fired toward the passed-out Claydol.
"What's going on?" Victor shouted as he thought that Torterra was attacking his knocked out Pokémon.
"Don't worry, Cooper is just healing your partner. That Hyper Beam was quite a lot to take."
"Oh, thank you." Victor bowed slightly expressing his gratitude.
"No problem. You are fun to battle with. Do you want to continue? Do you have any Pokémon that want to battle against Cooper?"
'I have Nora. And this monster must be tired. But it is so freakishly strong given this Hyper Beam,' Victor pondered.
"You don't mind? We agreed on 3-on-3," he said aloud.
His opponent looked at his Pokémon. Cooper, the Torterra, nodded his head.
"Yeah, we don't mind. Please, go ahead," the younger trainer signaled with his hand for him to continue.
"May I ask, what is the level of your Torterra?" Victor inquired.
"If you beat me, I'll tell you," the younger trainer shrugged.
"Okay, Nora, it's your turn!" shouted Victor as he called out his massive Baxcalibur—a Dragon/Ice-type Pokémon.
Max finally took his hands out of his pocket and whistled in surprise and awe. He took out his phone and scanned the towering behemoth standing in front of him.

"Wow, that's a rare and beautiful Pokémon. You must have taken very good care of it," Max said, sounding genuinely impressed.
"Thank you. I've had her for over 30 years. To be honest, she's at level 92," Victor shared with his opponent.
Nora, the Baxcalibur, watched Cooper, the Torterra, with a burning desire for vengeance in her eyes. She was eager to battle and avenge her fallen friends. But this Torterra could not be underestimated.
"Ice Punch!"
Baxcalibur charged towards Torterra, her entire forearm glowing with light blue ice energy that formed a massive ice claw. Torterra remained stationary, taking the attack head-on.
"Continue with more Ice Punches!"
Baxcalibur's other arm took on the same icy glow as she punched and clawed at Torterra with both hands. Victor was surprised at how Torterra withstood the assault and even more surprised that his opponent remained silent.
What are they doing?? Victor thought with growing insecurity.
Baxcalibur continued with Ice Punches, and soon her maw started to glow blue as she added Ice Fang to the assault.
But it was not enough.
"Icicle Crash!" he commanded.
Baxcalibur roared loudly and attacked again. Several large, sharp icicles formed above Torterra and began to rain down upon it. What Victor did not realize was that before Baxcalibur's attack began, Torterra had used a status move Stockpile several times to boost its Defense and Special Defense, otherwise those Ice Punches would have surely knocked it out.
"Hey Victor, do you know what the ability of a starter Pokémon is?" Max shouted across the arena.
"What??" he asked, surprised by the sudden question.
"It's Overgrow. We were waiting for it to activate so we could really fight."
Then Max turned to Baxcalibur.
"Nora, stop attacking with your weaker moves and concentrate. We promise not to attack you. Prepare your strongest attack, give it all you've got, and show us you are THE ice dragon."
Victor was surprised that his opponent addressed his Pokémon directly and even more surprised when Nora followed the command. She ceased her attacks and closed her eyes.
"What are you doing??" shouted Victor. In his long experience, he had seen many things, but never had he witnessed an opponent talking to his Pokémon. His Baxcalibur was powerful and proud, not one to easily respect another's requests.
"Victor, wait. I want to see this. Give her a chance to prepare," the younger trainer said, raising his hand.
Nora, the Baxcalibur, activated Snowscape. The battlefield was suddenly covered in snow, and the temperature began to drop. Then she started preparing Swords Dance. After a few long seconds, Victor felt a significant boost in Nora's power.
"Again," the younger trainer encouraged her.
Both the Baxcalibur and her trainer looked incredulously at their opponent. Victor was speechless, but Nora used the move again.
"One more time. You can get even stronger!" he urged the dragon.
Meanwhile, Cooper was breathing hard, trying to shake off the ice from its body caused by the previous attacks. It had taken enough damage that its ability Overgrow had started to activate. Cooper's body began to glow green with grass-type energy, and Victor could feel the power of the Grass Pokémon rising rapidly. That was the Overgrow ability. Victor knew that when the health of a starter Pokémon decreases, it significantly boosts its attack power.
"I can feel that you have some kind of ice and dragon combo move. What is it? Could you show us?"
"Terra!" agreed Cooper, nodding its head.
"How do you know that?" Victor wondered.
"You've seen me working in the Pokémon Center. I know a thing or two."
"Okay, I admit, you're right. We combined Dragon Rush with ice energy."
"Show us!"
Torterra prepared and watched Baxcalibur carefully. Nora's body started to glow blue with ice energy. After several long seconds, it was overlapped by green dragon energy. The ice energy didn't disappear; instead, the two energies began to mingle together. Baxcalibur roared loudly and charged towards Torterra.
"Terra!" Torterra lowered its head and prepared for the impact.
But just before Baxcalibur's body hit Torterra, massive roots with thorns sprang out of the snowy ground, covered the field and gripped the dragon. She roared as the ice energy spread from her body, freezing the thorns. They shrank, and she was able to move again, though she was a bit confused and slowed down.
'Oh no, it's Frenzy Plant,' thought Victor.
"More!" shouted the younger guy, but he wasn't encouraging his Pokémon. He was encouraging Nora.
"BUUURRRR!" Baxcalibur roared, jumped into the air to shake off the roots of Frenzy Plant, and attacked Torterra from the side. Despite the heavy snowfall, more thorns emerged from the ground and blocked her path.
"Cooper, wait! Give them a chance!" the younger man finally addressed his Pokémon.
The thorns, which had been aiming at Baxcalibur from all sides, suddenly stopped and moved to create a clear path towards Torterra.
"Baxcalibur, show us."
Torterra closed its eyes and waited, while Baxcalibur roared and charged towards Torterra once again, glowing with ice and dragon energy. Upon impact, a massive explosion erupted, and the battlefield was covered in smoke, dust, and hailstones.
"Baxcalibur!!" shouted Victor, his voice filled with fear.
"Blow the smoke away, Hedwig," said the younger guy, tossing a Poké Ball into the air. Noctowl appeared and, with a few flaps of its wings, cleared the dust and smoke.
Victor could see that Baxcalibur's attack had landed on Torterra. However, the thorns from Frenzy Plant didn't disappear. A few meters from both Pokémon, the thorns began to stir and revealed a second Torterra hidden beneath them.
"You tricked me!" Victor shouted, realizing Torterra had used Substitute and the Icy Dragon Rush had hit the decoy.
"Terra!" the real Torterra grinned at him.
"Cooper, you rascal!" The younger guy shook his head in disbelief, and his Pokémon grinned back at him.
"Okay, Victor, let's call it a draw. Agreed?"
"What? The match isn't over yet."
"Fine. Then I'll say I won the 3-on-3 match. But we need to return to the center as soon as possible."
"What are you talking about?"
"I need to get back to work, and you need me to heal your Pokémon, don't you? Look at them—both are panting heavily and about to faint."
Both trainers recalled their Pokémon and quickly headed back towards the Pokémon Center.
"Wait, why did you suggest a draw?" Victor asked.
"Because if you hadn't lost, I would have told you Cooper's level."
"Come on," Victor sighed in frustration.
"Well, you gave us a good fight. My team had quite a bit of fun. And I believe that, in the last round, without the trick with Substitute, Cooper wouldn't have withstood that move."
"You're just sugarcoating things. Your Torterra could withstand several Ice Punches without even flinching. I think even that final attack wouldn't have taken it down," Victor protested.
"Maybe," the younger guy shrugged, "but to be honest, he had already used Stockpile several times before those Ice Punches started. So our defense was boosted multiple times. Moreover, we've trained to overcome our weakness to ice."
They arrived at the Pokémon Center. There were a few people waiting in line and a young lady at the reception. When she saw them, she exploded.
"Finally, you are here. Where the hell have you been?" she shouted as they stepped into view. Monika, a young woman in her mid-20s with tall, curvy body and a practical, no-nonsense demeanor, was standing at about 170 cm. Her long, chestnut brown hair was tied back in a ponytail, and her sharp hazel eyes scanned the room with authority. Wearing a fitted Pokémon Center uniform with a opened white lab coat, dark jeans, and comfortable sneakers, she exuded a blend of youthful energy and mature efficiency. Though she appeared younger, there was an undeniable sense of maturity about her—an aura suggesting she was slightly older and more experienced than she looked.
"Sorry, Mon, this gentleman came here and I..." Max began, his voice wavering slightly. He seemed taken aback by Monika's intense gaze, his usual confident demeanor faltering. His words stumbled as he continued, "I-I know. I'm really sorry, Mon. I didn't think... I mean, I didn't expect to be away this long."
Monika's eyes narrowed, and her expression remained stern. "And of course, you had to fight him! Fine, but next time you are taking care of the center and you leave, there will be consequences!!"
Max shifted uneasily, his hands fidgeting at his sides. "I-I know. I'm really sorry, Mon. I didn't mean for it to be this way. I just... I didn't expect things to get so intense."
"And you," Monika turned to Victor, but her tone softened considerably.
"You must have some Pokémon for us to treat, right?"
"Yes, here you go," Victor handed her four Poké Balls.
"And Miss?" he asked, glancing toward the back room where Max had disappeared.
"Yes? Do you need anything else?"
"Yes, actually. I was wondering about your ehm... assistant. He introduced himself as Max, but is that really his name? I didn't catch a last name or any other details."
"Him? Ah, don't you worry about him. That's nobody, just my stupid cousin," she smiled at Victor, her stern expression melting into a more relaxed one.
While they were talking about him, the younger guy in the back room called out his Pokémon. The large Torterra barely fit in the room, so Noctowl landed on Torterra's tree, and Salazzle made herself comfortable on one of Torterra's rocks.
"Do you remember how we lost to him horribly several years ago? I do. We fought just against the Beartic and couldn't knock it out. And now, we can say that we finally beat him."
Noctowl hooted, flapping its wings, Salazzle hissed with a swing of her tail, and Torterra grinned.
"He didn't stand a chance. I didn't even have to instruct you guys how to fight. I can't believe how far we've come!"
"Terra!" Torterra growled in agreement.
"Well, you've seen it. I offered him a draw because I was tempted to tell him your level."
"Tor! Torterra!"
"Yes, Cooper. But it doesn't matter. Until this vacation at home is over, we can rest and have fun."
As the room quieted and the soft hum of the Pokémon Center's machinery filled the air, he looked around at his Pokémon. They were his companions, his friends, and his allies through countless battles and trials. Despite the day's victory, he felt a twinge of nostalgia and introspection.
He remembered his first steps into the world of Pokémon, full of awe and uncertainty. The journey had been long and winding, filled with moments of triumph and defeat. Every battle, every challenge had been a step towards something greater. The laughter and tears, the lessons learned—they all led him to this moment.
His gaze drifted to the window, where the city lights sparkled like a sea of stars. Each light represented a story, a challenge, a person he had met along the way. He thought of the small, hesitant boy who had started this journey and the experiences that had shaped him into who he was now.
Despite the satisfaction of today's victory, he knew the road ahead was still long. There were new places to explore, new friends to make, and more challenges to face. But he was ready. The journey had only just begun, and he was eager to see where it would lead him next.
With a final glance at his Pokémon, he took a deep breath and stepped out of the room. The night was young, and with each step he took, he felt the weight of his dreams and the excitement of the adventures that awaited."
