Pokémon: The Battle Ranch Chronicles

Chapter 7: Chapter 07: Saturday's competition

Rachel made her way across the field towards the ranch's arena, where the weekly contest was about to begin. The weight of the heavy backpack full of medical supplies didn't bother her; years of tending to injured Pokémon had made her strong. In her hands, she carefully cradled the incubator containing the mysterious egg that had captivated her nephew, Jake. Walking alongside her was her daughter, Monika, who despite her young age had grown into a skilled assistant, knowing precisely which pills and ointments to use after each battle.

"Come on, you Slowpoke! We're almost there. The battles are about to start!" Monika called over her shoulder, tugging at Jake's arm as he lagged behind, mesmerized by a large flock of Fletchling darting playfully through the sky above them.

Jake's eyes sparkled with excitement, not just from the sight of the Fletchling but from the anticipation of the battles ahead. Every Saturday, the ranch hosted a contest where trainers from the ranch, employees, their family members, and even a few competitors from the nearby town od Iglaustadt came together to test their skills. It was a cherished tradition, a chance for everyone to see how much they had improved and to bond over their shared love of Pokémon.

Rachel wasn't just a mere spectator. She was there to ensure that any Pokémon injured in battle received immediate care, sometimes right there on the field. Her backpack was filled with all the essentials—antidotes, potions, bandages, and even specialized remedies that she had prepared herself. Monika was a quick learner and had been helping her mother for the past year, efficiently handing her the correct medication and knowing just what to do in each situation.

Unlike Monika, who was focused and attentive, Jake had a tendency to get lost in the spectacle of the Pokémon themselves, often missing the finer details of the care his aunt provided. Today was no different. His mind was already on the battles, his excitement barely contained. But this time, there was something else that held his attention—the egg. Even though Rachel had explained that it might not hatch into a Cubone, Jake still thought of it as such. He had begged to bring the incubator with him to bond with the future Pokémon.

Rachel had readily agreed. After all, the egg had been a source of endless fascination for Jake, and she believed that the bond between a trainer and their Pokémon started long before the hatching. She glanced down at the incubator, smiling at the thought. Whatever Pokémon emerged, it was clear that Jake's heart was already fully invested.

As they approached the arena, the sounds of excited chatter and the calls of various Pokémon filled the air. The trainers were gathering, some making last-minute preparations with their Pokémon, while others were already strategizing for their upcoming matches. The energy was infectious, and Rachel could see Jake's excitement bubbling over. Monika gave him a knowing smile as she tightened her grip on her own bag of supplies, ready to assist her mother in any way she could.

"Hello, everyone!" Frank greeted them with a broad smile as he approached his wife, daughter, and nephew. As a seasoned Pokémon Ranger, Frank's expertise in Pokémon health and condition made him a perfect fit to serve as the referee for the ranch's weekly battles. His tall, sturdy frame and confident demeanor gave him an air of authority, but his warm smile and easygoing nature made him approachable, especially to the younger trainers.

"So, Jake," Frank said, crouching down to his nephew's level, "how long do you think today's battles should be? Three on three? Or maybe… six on six?"

"Six on six, Uncle Frank!" Jake shouted enthusiastically, his eyes lighting up at the thought of seeing more battles. The idea of a full-scale showdown with six Pokémon on each side was thrilling to him.

Rachel, however, felt a twinge of panic at the suggestion. "Oh no, you don't!" she interjected, her voice a mix of fake anger and disbelief. She knew how intense a six-on-six battle could be, and with only a few staff members working at the Pokémon Center over the weekend, she dreaded the thought of spending her entire Saturday evening and possibly Sunday treating the exhausted and injured Pokémon.

Frank, staying calm and collected one, gave his wife a smug smile. "Don't worry, dear," he said softly, leaning in to give her a quick kiss on the cheek. Then, with a mischievous grin, he gave her a playful squeeze on the butt, causing Rachel to gasp in surprise. Before she could react and slap him, Frank winked at Jake, who giggled, and dashed off towards the battlefield, leaving Rachel to shake her head in exasperation.

"Dad! That's gross!" Monika grimaced, rolling her eyes at her parents' display of affection. As much as she loved her family, there were some things she could do without seeing.

Rachel, her cheeks flushed slightly, quickly composed herself. "Alright, let's get settled," she said, more to distract herself than anything else. She adjusted the strap of her heavy backpack and made sure the incubator was secure in her arms. Jake, still bubbling with excitement, barely noticed the exchange, his focus already shifting to the upcoming battles.

As they made their way to the viewing area, Rachel couldn't help but smile. Despite the chaos that often surrounded these events, there was something special about the Saturday tradition. It brought everyone together—family, friends, and Pokémon alike—and reminded her of the strong bonds they all shared.

"Alright, everybody! Listen up!" Frank's voice boomed across the field, instantly commanding the attention of the gathered crowd. The large, open area where everyone stood was centered around a rectangular battlefield, its edges worn smooth from countless contests. The field itself was mostly bare ground, with a few stubborn patches of grass clinging to the soil, a testament to the intense battles that had taken place there over the years.

Dozens of trainers, ranch workers, and spectators encircled the field, their expressions a mix of excitement and anticipation. In the crowd, Rachel, Monika, and Jake found a spot near the front, eager to see the action up close.

Frank stood in the middle of the field with a large box by his side, filled with numbered tokens. "For those of you participating in today's battles, you should have already drawn a number between 1 and 32," he began, holding up a handful of tokens for emphasis. "I have the same numbers here in this box, and I'll be drawing them randomly to determine the matchups. We'll start with one-on-one battles for the first round with all 32 of you. The same goes for the second round when we're down to 16 participants."

As Frank continued explaining the rules, Jake's eyes widened in excitement. He couldn't wait to see which Pokémon would be battling today.

"When we reach the third round with the final 8, we'll switch to two-on-two battles. The same goes for the fourth round with the final 4 contestants. And for the championship round with the last 2 finalists, it'll be a three-on-three showdown!"

The crowd murmured in approval, the escalating intensity of the rounds building anticipation. Frank paused for a moment, letting the information sink in before continuing, "Now, remember, you all agreed beforehand that the Pokémon used today should be at or below level 30 to keep things fair. If I see a Pokémon that's over level 30, I'll give you a warning. If you don't switch it out for a lower-level Pokémon, you'll be disqualified. No exceptions!"

Monika leaned over to Jake with a grin. "Isn't it cool?" she whispered.

Jake, momentarily distracted by the thought of the upcoming battles, glanced at her curiously. "What's cool? Some of the Pokémon?"

"No, you moron," Monika rolled her eyes playfully. "It's cool that my dad can stand up there and talk in front of so many people without getting nervous. I'd be stuttering the whole time. Could you do it?"

Jake paused, considering the question. After a moment, he replied thoughtfully, "I don't know… but I think if I were commenting on Pokémon battles, I wouldn't stutter at all!"

"Of course," Monika chuckled, rolling her eyes at her cousin's confidence. But she couldn't help but smile at the thought of Jake excitedly narrating battles. He had always had a knack for focusing when it came to Pokémon.

As they continued to chat, Frank drew the first two numbers from the box, calling out the names of the trainers attached to them. The crowd cheered as the first battle was about to begin, the atmosphere buzzing with energy.

As the first battle was about to begin, the tension in the air was palpable. Among the 32 participants, there were 20 trainers who were either seasonal or part-time employees of the ranch, 5 from the nearby town Iglaustadt, 4 long-term employees, and 3 members of the Lindenberg family—Joe, Anna, and Eva. They all sat on benches surrounding the battlefield, eagerly awaiting their turn. Nearby, Joe's Oranguru sat calmly, its sharp eyes scanning the field, ready to intervene if any stray attacks threatened the spectators.

Frank stood in the center of the field, his voice carrying over the expectant crowd. "First up, numbers 12 and 27!" he announced, drawing the first two trainers.

From the benches, two trainers stood up and walked to opposite sides of the field. The first was a tall, athletic young man with tousled brown hair and a confident stride. His name was Liam Ross, a 22-year-old from Saffron City in the Kanto region. Liam had grown up near the famous Saffron Gym, where he had been inspired by the local psychic-type gym. After struggling to make a name for himself in the competitive Kanto circuit, Liam had come to the Lindenberg Ranch to train in a more relaxed environment, hoping to refine his skills before returning to Kanto to challenge its gyms again.

On the other side of the field stood a petite young woman with short, vibrant red hair and an intense expression. This was Misha Rivera, a 19-year-old from Ecruteak City in the Johto region. Misha had always been fascinated by the spiritual and mystical aspects of Pokémon, particularly ghost and psychic-types, which were prevalent in her hometown. After a difficult loss at the Ecruteak Gym, she had decided to take a break from her travels and work at the Lindenberg Ranch to gain more experience and learn new strategies. Despite her young age, Misha was known for her sharp mind and tactical approach to battles.

"You know the rules," Frank reminded them. "This is a one-on-one battle. Prepare your Pokéballs!"

With a synchronized motion, both trainers threw their Pokéballs into the air. The capsules burst open, releasing beams of light that materialized into two Pokémon. On one side stood Hypno, Misha's psychic-type Pokémon known for its hypnotic abilities. On the other side appeared Liam's Machoke, the powerful fighting-type Pokémon, flexing its muscular arms.

Liam's confident expression faltered slightly as he recognized the disadvantage. Fighting-types were weak against psychic-types, and he knew this was going to be an uphill battle.

"Hypno, start with Calm Mind," ordered Misha, her voice calm but firm. She had trained her Hypno to focus on building up its mental strength, knowing that a strong defense was often the best offense.

"Machoke, use Focus Energy and follow up with Bulk Up!" Liam countered quickly, trying to boost his Pokémon's power to offset the type disadvantage.

Machoke's eyes narrowed in concentration as it focused its energy, increasing its chances of landing a critical hit. Then, its muscles bulged as it used Bulk Up, boosting its physical attack and defense stats. Hypno, meanwhile, closed its eyes and steadied its breathing, enhancing its special attack and special defense with Calm Mind.

"Hypno, use Hypnosis!" Misha commanded, her strategy focused on putting Machoke to sleep and taking control of the battle.

"Double Hit, now!" shouted Liam, realizing that a normal-type move like Double Hit would be more effective against Hypno than any fighting-type attack. Machoke, abandoning the second half of its previous move, charged at Hypno with blinding speed, its fists glowing with normal-type energy.

Hypno's eyes snapped open, glowing with an eerie blue light as it began to swing its pendulum, trying to lull Machoke into a deep sleep.

"Machoke, close your eyes and keep running!" yelled Liam, desperation edging his voice. He hoped that by avoiding eye contact, Machoke could dodge the Hypnosis.

"What?!" Misha exclaimed, taken aback by the unorthodox strategy. But before she could issue another command, Machoke barreled into Hypno, landing the first strike of Double Hit with a solid punch. The impact made Hypno stagger back, its focus momentarily broken.

"Keep it up, Machoke! Double Hit again!" Liam urged, seeing a glimmer of hope.

Machoke followed through, delivering the second strike of Double Hit, sending Hypno reeling. But Hypno was quick to recover, teleporting just as Machoke was about to strike again. The psychic-type reappeared behind its opponent, and with a flash of multicolored light, it unleashed a Psybeam directly at Machoke's back.

Machoke groaned in pain as the Psybeam struck it, the super-effective move nearly bringing it to its knees.

"Machoke, are you okay?!" Liam called out, worry creeping into his voice. He couldn't afford to lose this early in the tournament.

Machoke let out another groan, its body trembling as it struggled to rise. For a moment, it seemed as though it might not be able to continue. But then, with a fierce growl, Machoke forced itself back to its feet, its eyes blazing with determination.

"Yes! Now, use Payback!" Liam shouted, seizing the opportunity to turn the tables.

Dark energy began swirling around Machoke's fists, the aura growing more intense with each passing second. The fighting-type charged at Hypno, ready to deliver a devastating blow with the super-effective dark-type move.

"Hypno, dodge and fire another Psybeam!" Misha countered quickly, her voice tight with focus.

Hypno nimbly sidestepped Machoke's attack, the dark energy missing it by inches. As Machoke tried to recover, Hypno unleashed another Psybeam, this time catching Machoke square in the chest. The force of the blast sent Machoke crashing to the ground, where it lay motionless, unable to continue.

Frank stepped forward, raising his hand. "Machoke is unable to battle! Hypno is the winner!" he declared, his voice echoing across the field.

Misha let out a sigh of relief, recalling her Pokémon with a smile. On the other side, Liam returned his Machoke to its Pokéball with a look of disappointment, but he quickly crossed the field to shake hands with his opponent, a sign of respect and good sportsmanship.

"Great battle," Liam said, managing a smile despite his loss.

"Thanks," Misha replied warmly. "You did great too. That Payback strategy almost had me."

As the two trainers returned to the benches, Frank wasted no time in calling out the next matchup. "Let's continue with numbers 25 and 3!"

The next pair of trainers stood up, their expressions a mix of excitement and determination. The first battle had set the tone for the day, and everyone knew they had to bring their best to stand a chance in this fierce competition.

The second battle of the tournament was about to begin. The crowd, still buzzing from the first match, shifted their attention to the next pair of trainers who stepped onto the battlefield.

The first trainer was a broad-shouldered man in his early 30s, with a rugged appearance that suggested he was no stranger to tough work. His name was Markus Stone, a miner from Oreburgh City in the Sinnoh region. Markus had spent years working in the coal mines, where he had developed a deep connection with rock and ground-type Pokémon. After a mining accident left him with a limp, he decided to pursue his passion for Pokémon battles full-time, hoping to eventually open his own rock-type gym. Markus had come to the Lindenberg Ranch to hone his skills and to learn from the diverse range of trainers that frequented the ranch.

His opponent was a young woman in her mid-20s with curly brown hair and a determined look in her eyes. This was Tessa Williams, originally from Goldenrod City in the Johto region. Tessa had grown up in the bustling city but always felt more at home in the peaceful countryside. She had recently moved to the ranch to take a break from the fast-paced life of the city and to focus on training her Pokémon in a more serene environment. Tessa specialized in fairy and normal-type Pokémon, with her Snubbull being her most trusted partner.

The two trainers faced off, each ready to give their all.

Frank, standing at the edge of the field, called out to the trainers. "This will be a one-on-one battle. Get ready!"

Markus and Tessa nodded, and with a flick of their wrists, they released their Pokémon onto the battlefield. Markus's Geodude emerged with a low growl, its rocky body hovering just above the ground. Across from it, Tessa's Snubbull stood ready, baring its fangs with a determined snarl.

"Geodude, use Sandstorm!" Markus commanded, his deep voice carrying across the field.

Geodude spun rapidly, stirring up a fierce sandstorm that enveloped the battlefield, reducing visibility and creating a harsh environment for Snubbull.

"Snubbull, use Dig and then Rain Dance!" Tessa called out, her strategy aimed at countering the Sandstorm.

Snubbull quickly burrowed underground, disappearing from sight as dark clouds began to gather overhead. Moments later, it started to rain, the water quickly quelling the sandstorm. Geodude, now exposed in the middle of the field, looked distinctly uncomfortable as rain poured down, knowing it was weak against water-type moves.

"Quickly, use Earthquake!" Markus shouted, hoping to hit Snubbull while it was still underground.

Geodude slammed its fists into the ground, causing a massive earthquake to ripple through the battlefield. The ground cracked open, and Snubbull was violently thrown out of its hiding place, landing hard on the wet earth.

"Follow up with Rollout!" Markus ordered, seizing the opportunity to press the attack.

Geodude curled into a ball and began rolling toward Snubbull, its speed increasing with every rotation.

"Don't let it get close, Snubbull! Hit it with Water Pulse!" Tessa yelled, desperate to stop Geodude's advance.

Snubbull quickly formed a ball of water between its paws and hurled it at the oncoming Geodude. The rain-boosted Water Pulse hurtled toward Geodude, threatening to knock it out in a single hit.

"Dodge it, Geodude! To your left!" Markus barked.

Geodude managed to veer to the side, the Water Pulse exploding harmlessly against the ground just inches away from it. The crowd let out a collective gasp as Geodude narrowly avoided the devastating attack.

"Now, Geodude, use Thunder Punch on the ground!" Markus commanded, his voice filled with determination.

Geodude's fist crackled with electricity as it punched the wet ground. The electricity spread rapidly across the battlefield, conducted by the rain-soaked earth. Snubbull, standing on the damp ground, was caught in the electrical surge and cried out as the shock paralyzed it, leaving it unable to move.

Tessa's heart sank as she saw her Snubbull struggle to move. "Come on, Snubbull! Try to use Water Pulse again!" she urged, but Snubbull remained frozen in place, its muscles locked by the paralysis.

Markus allowed himself a small grin. "Finish it with Fire Punch, Geodude!"

Geodude's fist ignited with flames as it rolled toward the immobilized Snubbull. With a powerful swing, Geodude delivered a fiery punch to Snubbull, who was already weakened by the paralysis. The fire-type move was too much for Snubbull, and it collapsed onto the ground, fainted.

Frank raised his hand, signaling the end of the match. "Snubbull is unable to battle! Geodude wins!" he declared.

Markus quickly recalled his Geodude, a look of satisfaction on his face. Despite the harsh conditions, his Geodude had performed admirably, and he was one step closer to proving himself as a worthy rock-type trainer.

Tessa knelt beside her fallen Snubbull, gently stroking its fur before returning it to its Pokéball. "You did your best," she whispered softly. Standing up, she forced a smile and walked over to Markus, extending her hand.

"Good match," she said, her voice steady despite the disappointment.

"Yeah, you too," Markus replied, shaking her hand firmly. "Your Snubbull is tough. That Rain Dance was a smart move."

As the two trainers returned to the benches, Frank called out the next pair of numbers. "Let's continue with 31 and 24!"

The excitement in the air was palpable as the tournament pressed on, each battle bringing its own set of challenges and surprises.

"So, kiddos, how are you enjoying the tournament so far?" Rachel asked, leaning in closer to her daughter and nephew.

Monika shrugged casually. "It's alright. Not great, not terrible."

Jake, on the other hand, was practically glowing with excitement. "It's awesome! Way better than watching it on TV!"

"I can't wait until I'm a trainer!" he added, eyes sparkling.

Rachel feigned a pout, her lips curving into a playful smile. "Oh? I thought you would be a Pokémon doctor and help me out."

Jake grinned, a bit sheepishly. "Sorry, Auntie. I do want to help you, but being a trainer sounds even more fun. And Monika's way better at the doctor stuff than I am."

Monika flashed a proud smile at the compliment, while Rachel laughed and affectionately ruffled Jake's hair.

"And I have no doubt you'll be an amazing trainer, Jake. Right?"

"Right!" Jake nodded enthusiastically. He stretched out his hands, eager to hold the incubator with the egg. Rachel handed it to him, and the three of them turned their attention back to the battlefield.

Two more quick battles concluded, with Frank's voice ringing out across the field. "Sableye is unable to battle!"

He reached into the box of numbers again, drawing the next set. "Alright, trainers with numbers... 7 and 11, step forward!"

"It's Mom!" Jake shouted, his voice brimming with excitement. He began cheering loudly, and Monika, caught up in the moment, joined in, her voice adding to the chorus of support for her aunt.

Eva, with the number 11, smiled warmly at her son and niece as she stepped forward, taking her position on the battlefield. Her trusted Venomoth fluttered beside her, a silent but steady presence. Unfortunately, Lenny was too advanced to compete in today's tournament, so Eva had to choose another Pokémon.

Across the field, her opponent Brian, a cocky young trainer from the nearby town of Iglaustadt, smirked when he saw her. Eva was well-known around the ranch and the town for her love of Bug-type Pokémon, a fact that Brian was eager to exploit.

"Prepare your Pokéballs!" Frank's voice rang out, signaling the start of the match.

Eva and Brian each grabbed a Pokéball, their fingers tightening around the familiar, smooth surface.

"Let's go!" Frank called, officially beginning the battle.

"Come out, Britney!" Eva shouted, and with a flash of light, her Ribombee appeared, hovering delicately in front of her.

Ribombee

Level: 24

Name: Britney

Shield Dust – Protective dust shields Ribombee from the additional effects of the moves

Sweet Veil – Prevents Ribombee and its allies from falling asleep

Resistant to: Fighting (2x), Ground, Bug, Grass, Dark

"Let's win this!" Brian yelled, his Darmanitan emerging onto the field, exuding a fiery aura of confidence.

"Let the Battle Begin!" Frank shouted and raised his hands in the opening gesture.

Eva frowned as she took in the sight of the Darmanitan. The fire-type Pokémon had a clear advantage over her Ribombee, whose Bug and Fairy-type moves wouldn't be very effective against it. She quickly assessed her options, realizing she'd need to rely on her non-STAB moves like Swift, Acrobatics, and Psychic to stand a chance.

"Britney, start with Quiver Dance!" Eva commanded. Ribombee began to fly in graceful circles, boosting her special attack, special defense, and speed in one fluid motion.

Brian wasted no time. "Darmanitan, use Fire Spin!"

The fiery ape spat out a massive ball of flames that hurtled toward Ribombee. But with her newly boosted speed, Ribombee deftly dodged the attack, finishing her Quiver Dance just in time.

"Keep up the momentum, Britney! Use Agility!" Eva instructed, hoping to further increase Ribombee's speed.

Brian's eyes narrowed. "Heat Wave, now!"

The wide-area fire attack was much harder to dodge, and the intense heat filled the battlefield.

Eva remained calm. "Britney, just like we practiced!" Ribombee darted toward Darmanitan, spinning rapidly in the air. Despite the heat, Ribombee pushed through the flames, but not without taking some damage, ending up falling down and rolling on the ground as it got closer to its target.

Brian grinned, seeing his chance. "Finish it with Fire Punch!"

Darmanitan's fist ignited with intense flames as it closed in on the seemingly vulnerable Ribombee. But Eva was ready.

"Now!"

With a sudden burst of energy, Ribombee leaped into the air, a faint yellow shield surrounding her. The Light Screen had been set up mid-flight, allowing Ribombee to endure the heat with minimal damage. She dodged the incoming Fire Punch with ease and got up close to Darmanitan.

"Acrobatics!" Eva shouted. Ribombee's body glowed with a light-blue flying aura as she slammed into Darmanitan's head with incredible force.

"Gyro Ball!" Brian retaliated. Darmanitan began spinning rapidly, its body glowing with steel-type energy. Eva gritted her teeth, knowing that Ribombee was weak to steel-type moves.

"Britney, Agility and dodge it!" Eva called urgently.

Ribombee's speed increased once more, allowing her to maintain a safe distance from the spinning Darmanitan.

Brian wasn't done yet. "Combine it with Fire Spin!"

Now enveloped in flames, Darmanitan continued its spinning assault, a deadly mix of fire and steel.

"Stay in the air, Britney! Use Draining Kiss!" Eva countered.

Ribombee zipped around the battlefield, firing off pink, heart-shaped beams at Darmanitan. Though not very effective, the Draining Kiss sapped some of Darmanitan's energy, restoring Ribombee's stamina. The continuous movement kept Darmanitan off-balance, and the repeated Gyro Ball was starting to wear it down.

"This is getting old! Darmanitan, Heat Wave, now, and don't stop!" Brian shouted in frustration.

Darmanitan halted its spinning and unleashed another Heat Wave, filling the arena with intense flames. The temperature soared, and fire engulfed the battlefield.

But Joe's Oranguru was quick to react, using Confusion to contain the fire within the arena, ensuring the safety of the spectators.

"Britney, counter with Psychic!" Eva ordered.

Ribombee's eyes glowed blue, and the flames rushing towards her were suddenly enveloped in a blue aura, redirected back at Darmanitan.

Brian scoffed. "You think fire can hurt us? Not a chance!"

Eva smirked, muttering to herself, "Alright, let's see how you handle this."

"Britney, use Swift! Full power!"

"Fire Spin, again!" Brian commanded.

The battlefield lit up as Ribombee unleashed a volley of glowing yellow stars, colliding with the fireball from Darmanitan. The resulting explosion covered the field in thick smoke and dust.

"Darmanitan!" Brian called out anxiously.

Eva maintained her calm. She knew that with Ribombee's speed and the protection from Light Screen, her Pokémon would come out unscathed.

"Britney, clear the smoke with Fairy Wind!" Eva instructed.

In a matter of seconds, the pink-tinged wind blew the smoke away, revealing Ribombee hovering triumphantly in the air, while Darmanitan was down on one knee, clearly struggling.

"Can you still fight?" Brian asked, concern creeping into his voice.

Darmanitan grunted, forcing itself to stand, though it was visibly shaking.

"Good! Finish it with Flare Blitz!"

"Darmanitan's body ignited with fierce red and blue flames, charging forward with everything it had.

"Britney, prepare Struggle Bug and wait for my signal," Eva calmly directed.

As Darmanitan barreled towards her, Ribombee's body glowed with a green aura, drawing on her Bug-type energy. She stayed perfectly still, waiting for the right moment.

"Now!" Eva shouted.

In an instant, Ribombee launched herself into the air, then came crashing down onto Darmanitan's head with all her might, the Struggle Bug attack striking right as Darmanitan recoiled from its own Flare Blitz. The combined impact was too much.

"Darmanitan is unable to battle! Ribombee wins!" Frank declared, raising his hand to signal the end of the match.

Jake erupted into joyous cheers, jumping up and down with excitement as his mother emerged victorious in her battle.

"Yippee!" he cried out, his voice filled with pure happiness.

"Go, Eva, go!" Rachel and Monika shouted in unison, clapping their hands enthusiastically. The energy was infectious, spreading through the small group as they celebrated Eva's win.

Meanwhile, another battle was already underway on the battlefield, the intensity of the competition continuing unabated. But for Eva, the world seemed to slow down as she made her way back to her family, her smile wide and her heart light from the victory. Her Venomoth fluttered closely behind her, still brimming with the energy of the match.

As Eva approached, Monika playfully nudged Jake, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "So, Jakey, do you think you could be a better trainer than your mom?" she teased.

Jake gasped, his eyes wide with shock at the very idea. "No way!" he declared emphatically, his little face scrunching up with determination. "My mom is the best ever!"

Eva, overhearing her son's passionate defense, felt a warmth spread through her chest. She reached out and ruffled Jake's hair affectionately, her smile soft and full of pride.

"Thank you, sweetie," she said and kissed him on the cheek, her voice tender as she looked down at him. "But you know, with all the training and hard work you're doing, one day you might just be better than me."

Jake shook his head vigorously, as if the very thought was impossible. "Nuh-uh! You're the best, Mommy!"

Rachel laughed, her eyes twinkling as she looked at her sister-in-law. "Looks like you've got a number one fan, Eva."

Eva chuckled, pulling Jake into a gentle hug. "I wouldn't have it any other way," she said, kissing the top of his head.

The family shared a moment of quiet contentment, their bond strengthened by the shared experience. The sounds of battles and cheering in the background felt distant, as if this moment belonged only to them.

Monika leaned into her aunt, grinning. "You were amazing out there, Aunt Eva. That Ribombee of yours is something else!"

Eva smiled at her niece, grateful for the support. "Thanks, Mon. But remember, it's not just about the Pokémon—it's about the connection we share and how we work together. That's what makes a great trainer."

Jake looked up at his mother, his eyes shining with admiration. "I want to have a connection like that with my Pokémon one day," he said earnestly.

"And you will, Jake," Eva assured him, her voice filled with confidence. "You're already on the right path."

As they stood together, watching the next match unfold, Eva couldn't help but feel a deep sense of fulfillment. It wasn't just about winning battles—it was about the journey, the bonds they formed, and the memories they created together. And in that moment, surrounded by family, Eva knew she wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Together, Jake and his family watched the rest of the first round unfold. The excitement in the air was palpable, with cheers and the occasional gasp echoing from the audience. Both of Jake's grandparents had emerged victorious in their matches, adding to the anticipation of the next battles.

Joe Lindenberg, the head of the Battle Ranch, had just finished his match. His opponent, a young trainer named Liam, had traveled all the way from the coastal town of Dewford in the Hoenn region. Liam was a passionate trainer who had come to Lindenberg's Ranch to test his skills and learn from more experienced trainers. Dewford was known for its strong affinity with Water and Poison types due to its seaside location, which had influenced Liam's choice to train a Gulpin.

The battle between Joe's Tauros and Liam's Gulpin had been intense.

Tauros

Level: 21 to 23

Gender: Male

Type: Normal

Affinity: Normal (Full)

Moves: Tackle (20 to 21), Work Up (17 to 21), Horn Attack (19 to 22), Zen Headbutt (15), Raging Bull (20), Scary Face (14), Rest (18), Flame Charge (12), Aqua Jet (10 to 15), Facade (17), Endure (18), Stomping Tantrum (11 to 12), Iron Head (10 to 13), Earthquake (10)

Abilities:

Intimidate – When Tauros enters a battle, it intimidates opposing Pokémon, makes it flinch and lowes its attack

Sheer Force – Removes any addition effects from Tauros' moves, but increases the moves' power

Weak to: Fighting

Immune to: Ghost

Gulpin, a Poison-type Pokémon, was unleashing its acidic attacks, spewing acid and creating poisonous puddles across the battlefield. The battlefield was quickly becoming hazardous as the acid spread, creating a treacherous environment for Joe's Tauros.

Despite the challenges, Joe's Tauros handled the situation with impressive strategy. Using Earthquake, Tauros was able to strike Gulpin from a distance. The ground trembled as cracks formed, causing the poisonous acid to drain away into the fissures. This move was particularly effective, given that Poison-type Pokémon like Gulpin were vulnerable to Ground-type attacks.

Liam, determined not to let his Pokémon down, called out for a counterattack. "Gulpin, use Sludge Bomb!"

The attack hit its mark, and Tauros was poisoned by the Sludge Bomb. However, Joe was prepared for this. He directed Tauros to use Facade, a move that became stronger when the user was afflicted by a status condition like poisoning. The Facade hit Gulpin hard, nearly tipping the scales in Joe's favor.

In a last-ditch effort, Liam commanded Gulpin to use Mud Shot. The attack aimed to hinder Tauros's movements, but Joe's Tauros managed to evade the Mud Shot with agile maneuvers.

Joe seized the moment. "Tauros, use Zen Headbutt!"

The powerful Psychic-type attack struck Gulpin with precision. With its vulnerability to psychic moves, Gulpin was overwhelmed by the force of the Zen Headbutt. Tauros charged forward, ramming into Gulpin with all its might, sealing the victory for Joe.

"Gulpin is unable to battle!" Frank announced, his voice echoing over the field.

Liam, though disappointed, approached Joe with a respectful nod. "Great match, Mr. Lindenberg. Your Tauros is incredible."

Joe smiled warmly, extending a hand. "Thank you, Liam. You and your Gulpin gave it your all. Keep training, and you'll get stronger."

Liam shook Joe's hand firmly, a look of determination in his eyes. "I will. Thanks for the lesson."

As Liam returned to his seat, Joe walked back to his family, his face alight with pride. Jake, who had been watching intently, looked up at his grandfather with admiration.

"Wow, Grandpa, you were amazing!" Jake exclaimed.

Joe chuckled and ruffled Jake's hair. "Thanks, Jakey. Just remember, every battle is a learning experience."

The family gathered together, discussing the highlights of the match and eagerly anticipating the next round of battles. The atmosphere was charged with excitement and camaraderie, making the event a memorable experience for everyone involved.

Joe's wife, Anna, was gearing up for her match after a few rounds of intense battles. Anna, an accountant for the ranch, was known for her calm demeanor and analytic thinking. Her opponent, Martina, a lively and enthusiastic cook from the ranch, had brought her own unique flair to the competition. Martina's Vanillish, an Ice-type Pokémon with a fondness for a large freezer in the kitchen, was her chosen partner for the battle.

As the competitors took their positions, Jake's eyes were wide with anticipation. Anna released her partner, Chatot, into the field.

The colorful, chatty Pokémon flapped its wings energetically, ready to take on the challenge. Martina, standing confidently, sent out her Vanillish, which shimmered with icy elegance as it floated gracefully into the arena.

The match began with a burst of action. Vanillish launched a flurry of Ice Beams, which glittered and sparkled as they streaked across the battlefield. Being a Flying-type, Chatot was at a clear disadvantage, but Anna was prepared. Chatot darted through the icy projectiles with nimble agility, skillfully evading the attacks.

"Chatot, use Sing!" Anna commanded. Her voice was steady and assertive, reflecting her confidence. Chatot began to sing a melodious lullaby, and soon Vanillish's eyes grew heavy. The Ice-type Pokémon started to droop, finally succumbing to the sleep-inducing song.

"Now, Chatot, Steel Wing!" Anna directed. Chatot's wings glinted with metallic sheen as it flew towards the sleeping Vanillish. The Steel Wing attack struck with precision, its super-effective power exacerbated by Vanillish's current vulnerability. Vanillish shuddered slightly but remained asleep.

Martina, watching in frustration, urged her Pokémon to wake up. But Anna had anticipated this. "Chatot, keep up the pressure with Sing!" she called out. Chatot resumed its soothing song, and despite its best efforts, Vanillish found itself lulled back into a deep slumber.

The crowd around the field watched in awe as Anna and Chatot maintained their tactical advantage. With Vanillish asleep and unable to defend itself effectively, Anna's victory seemed imminent.

Jake, perched on the edge of his seat, couldn't contain his excitement. His cheers rang out loud and clear, "Go Grandma! You've got this!"

The final moments of the match played out like a well-rehearsed performance. Chatot executed another Steel Wing with grace and accuracy, and when Vanillish stirred groggily, it was met with another soothing lullaby that quickly sent it back to sleep.

Frank, acting as the referee, raised his hand. "Vanillish is unable to battle! The winner is Anna Lindenberg!"

The crowd erupted into applause, and Jake jumped up and down, clapping furiously. All of his family had won their matches so far, and the sense of family pride and joy was palpable.

Anna, her face flushed with both relief and pride, walked over to her family. Jake rushed to her side, hugging her tightly. "You were amazing, Grandma! All of us won!"

Anna beamed with pride as she ruffled Jake's hair. "Thank you, Jakey. It's all in the strategy."

The family gathered together, their spirits high as they celebrated their collective victories. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and cheer, while they watched the rest of the battles.

The second round of the tournament was about to begin, and with only 16 trainers remaining, the competition was about to heat up. This round would consist of eight matches, and Frank, ever the diligent referee, kept meticulous track of the numbers for the remaining contestants. The atmosphere in the arena was electric with anticipation as the crowd settled in for the next set of thrilling battles.

The first battle of the second round quickly captured everyone's attention: it was a family showdown between Joe and Anna. Joe, despite his strategic prowess and deep knowledge of Pokémon battles, had only one Pokémon eligible under the tournament's level cap of 30—his new Tauros. Tauros, a fearsome bull Pokémon with a reputation for raw power, stood ready for the challenge. Its dark brown fur and fierce gaze were a testament to its battle readiness.

Anna, Joe's wife, had a wider array of Pokémon at her disposal. She chose to battle with Solosis, a Psychic-type Pokémon she had trained extensively. Solosis, a floating, green Pokémon with a gelatinous body, was known for its calm demeanor and potent psychic abilities. Anna's choice reflected her confidence in Solosis's ability to handle tough opponents despite its small size.

Solosis

Level: 26

Name: N/A

Gender: Female

Type: Psychic

Affinity: Psychic (Full)

Moves: Confusion (25), Protect (25), Zen Headbutt (24), Calm Mind (23), Psyshock (23), Thunder (18), Night Shade (17), Recover (17), Future Sight (15), Flash Cannon (12), Energy Ball (10)

Abilities:

Magic Guard – Solosis only takes damage from attacks

Regenerator – Solosis restores some HP when withdrawn from battle

Weak to: Bug, Ghost, Dark

Resistant to: Fighting, Psychic

As the battle commenced, Frank's voice rang out, "Trainers, prepare your Pokémon!"

Joe and Tauros took their positions on one side of the battlefield, while Anna and Solosis assumed their stance on the opposite side. The field was set up with a mix of grassy patches and rocky terrain, adding to the challenge of the match.

"Begin!" Frank announced, signaling the start of the battle.

Joe wasted no time and directed Tauros to use Work Up, a move that increased both its attack and special attack. Tauros snorted and pawed the ground, its muscles tensing as it prepared for the upcoming fight.

Anna countered with Calm Mind, instructing Solosis to enhance its special attack and special defense. Solosis floated serenely, its eyes glowing as it focused its psychic energy.

Tauros charged forward with a powerful Horn Attack, but Solosis, with its psychic abilities, levitated gracefully out of reach and retaliated with Psyshock. The psychic move struck Tauros with pinpoint accuracy, giving Solosis the upper hand in the early stages of the battle.

However, Joe wasn't deterred. With a strategic grin, he commanded Tauros to use Scary Face. The move drastically reduced Solosis's speed, causing it to float more sluggishly. Joe seized the opportunity to turn the tide.

"Tauros, use Flame Charge!" Joe shouted. Tauros charged at Solosis with fiery intensity, its speed increasing with each attack. The fire-type move not only dealt damage but also caused a burn effect. Though Solosis's Magic Guard ability prevented the burn from affecting it, the rapid Flame Charges allowed Tauros to gain the upper hand by hitting Solosis repeatedly.

Anna, determined to regain control, instructed Solosis to use Confusion. Solosis's eyes glowed brightly as it lifted Tauros into the air and slammed it down repeatedly. Despite the psychic onslaught, Tauros quickly recovered and retaliated with Aqua Jet, a swift water-type move that sent Solosis reeling.

As Tauros launched another Aqua Jet, Solosis tried to counter with Energy Ball, a powerful grass-type attack that met charging Tauros in the middle of the field and threw it aside. With Tauros temporarily incapacitated, Solosis took the opportunity to use Recover, healing its wounds and restoring its strength.

The battle reached a critical juncture as both Pokémon faced off, their energy reserves visibly depleted. Joe, watching the scene unfold, let out a hearty laugh.

"I give up," Joe declared, raising his hands in a dramatic gesture of surrender.

Frank, amused, raised an eyebrow and asked, "Are you sure?"

Joe shrugged with a grin. "Of course, I can't let all the people here see that I am better than my wife."

Anna, rolling her eyes with amusement, shook her head but didn't argue. The crowd's reaction was mixed—some were disappointed to see the match cut short, while others appreciated the lighthearted moment.

Jake, visibly disappointed, turned to his aunt, Rachel, and asked, "I wanted to see more of the fight. It was awesome. Why did Grandpa give up?"

Rachel smiled knowingly and replied, "When you grow up and find a girlfriend, or a wife, you'll understand, buddy." She winked at him, adding a touch of humor.

Jake pouted, determined. "I don't want any girlfriend. Or wife. I want to be the best Pokémon trainer."

"Of course, you want." Rachel sighed and rolled her eyes, while Monika burst out laughing at the exchange.

Rachel suddenly turned around as she had strange almost creepy feeling that someone was watching her. But all the people behind her had their eyes focused on the battlefield. She carefully scanned the whole area, but she saw no strange things, therefore she shrugged and turn her attention back to the battles as well.

She and the kids continued to watch the second round of battles with great enthusiasm. Eva was about to compete in the fifth match, and as she walked confidently to her designated spot on the battlefield, her presence captured the attention of two nearby teenagers. They watched her tall and curvy body clad in beautiful summer dress, mesmerized, as Eva took her position.

"You see her, bro? That's one nice MILF!"

"Yeah, I would give my right hand to see her naked! Those tits are awesome."

"And that ass! Man, I would bang her so hard!"

"Haha, I bet if she undressed in front of you, you would cum in your pants. And she would laugh at you."

"Well, you are probably right..."

Luckily, their comments were not heard by anyone else.

Eva's opponent was Julia, a spirited 16-year-old with a reputation for her dedication and tenacity. Julia hailed from the picturesque town of Snowbelle City in the Kalos region, known for its icy landscapes and elegant Pokémon. Julia had come to Lindenberg Ranch not only to test her skills in a different environment but also to gain experience before entering the Pokémon League in her home region. Her dream was to become a renowned Pokémon Trainer and prove herself in diverse settings. Julia had a soft spot for Ice-type Pokémon, which was evident from her choice of Spheal for this battle.

As the match began, Julia called out her Spheal with determination. Spheal, a round, blubbery Ice/Water-type Pokémon, responded eagerly and started the battle by using Aqua Ring, creating a shimmering barrier that would heal it over time. This was quickly followed by Ice Ball, a powerful attack that accumulated strength with each successive hit.

Eva, with her usual grace and confidence, chose to use Ribombee again, her Bug/Fairy-type Pokémon. Ribombee began by performing Quiver Dance, a move that boosted its special attack, special defense, and speed. This preparation set the stage for a dynamic battle.

Julia's Spheal launched the Ice Ball, but Ribombee countered with Swift, firing a volley of stars to intercept the incoming attack. Both attacks collided in mid-air, creating a dazzling display of sparks and ice shards. Seeing an opportunity, Eva directed Ribombee to use Bug Buzz. Although Bug Buzz was not the most powerful move, its high-pitched sound disoriented Spheal, causing it to falter momentarily.

Julia, frustrated but determined, shouted encouragements to Spheal, trying to regain control. Despite her efforts, Ribombee's enhanced speed from Agility allowed it to dodge Spheal's subsequent Ice Beam attacks effortlessly. As Ribombee continued to maneuver around the battlefield, it scattered a fine violet powder with Pollen Puff. Julia and Spheal, preoccupied with the ongoing battle, failed to notice the subtle, yet significant change on the field.

"Now, let's end it!" Eva shouted with conviction.

Julia, sensing the impending crisis, cried out, "Use Ice Beam to freeze it!" Her voice was laced with urgency and worry. However, Ribombee's swift movements allowed it to evade the icy blasts, and the Pollen Puff attack began to take effect. The fine powder caused a chain reaction, amplifying Ribombee's move to the maximum.

Eva seized the moment. "Do it!" she hissed with determination.

Ribombee's eyes glowed with a light green hue as it activated the dust from Pollen Puff attack spread all around the area. The entire field was engulfed in a brilliant explosion of bug-type energy, filling the arena with a blinding flash and a shower of sparkling particles.

"Spheal! Hold on, please!" Julia's voice trembled with panic as she watched the aftermath of the explosion.

As the smoke and dust began to clear, Eva's Ribombee used Fairy Wind to blow away the debris, revealing Spheal lying on its back, fainted from the intensity of the attack. Eva rushed over to Ribombee, lifting her in a joyful embrace and spinning around in celebration.

"Shit, man, I wanna trade places with that Pokémon," sighed one of the teenagers and they watched Eva holding her Ribombee against her ample chest and jumping in glee.

Jake and Monika, sitting on the sidelines, erupted in cheers and applause as Eva claimed yet another victory. Their excitement and support echoed throughout the arena, adding to the festive atmosphere of the tournament.

Julia, though disappointed, approached Eva with a respectful nod, acknowledging her skill and the hard-fought battle. The crowd continued to buzz with energy, eagerly awaiting the next match in the intense and captivating second round of the tournament.

Monika turned to Jake, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Do you think, in the next round, your mom will go up against your grandma?"

Jake pondered for a moment, his brow furrowed in concentration. "Well, there will be 8 people left, so only 4 matches. I guess we'll have to wait and see," Rachel answered, glancing at the tournament bracket with a thoughtful expression.

Monika leaned closer, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Who would you cheer for if that happened?"

Jake hesitated, then confided, "Probably for my mom. But keep it a secret, okay?"

Monika grinned and extended her little finger. "I promise not to tell anyone," she said with a wink. Jake grinned back, hooking his pinky into hers, sealing their silent pact. They shared a brief, conspiratorial smile before turning their attention back to the field.

As the third round progressed, Jake's anticipation grew, but in a twist of fate, his mom and grandma did not face off against each other.

Anna faced a tough challenge in the third round of the tournament. Her first Pokémon, Solosis, was up against Harrison's Gastly. Harrison, a another native of Snowbelle City in the Kalos region and friend of Julia, was a budding trainer with a penchant for ghost types. He had recently moved to the area to test his skills in a new environment and was eager to show his abilities with his well-trained Gastly.

Gastly, with its spectral powers, began the match by unleashing a relentless barrage of Shadow Balls. The ghost-type attack was super effective against Solosis, who struggled to defend itself. "Come on, Solosis! Use Protect!" Anna urged, hoping her psychic type could shield itself from the incoming attacks.

The Protect shield held for a while, but Gastly's continuous assault made it difficult for Anna to mount a counterattack. "Energy Ball, now!" Anna shouted, trying to retaliate. However, Gastly's barrage was too intense. The Shadow Balls collided with the Energy Ball, causing a massive explosion that allowed a third Shadow Ball to strike Solosis directly. The impact was too much, and Solosis was knocked out.

"Noooo!" Jake cried out, his disappointment palpable as he watched his grandmother's first Pokémon fall.

"Calm down, Jakey. This is only the third round, and it's a two-on-two match. Your grandma can still turn this around," Rachel reassured him, patting him on the back.

Anna, not one to be easily discouraged, called out her second Pokémon. "Chatot, let's go!" she announced. Chatot, her loyal companion, appeared on the battlefield with a determined look. Harrison initially didn't realize that Chatot, being a normal type, was immune to Gastly's ghost-type attacks. He instructed Gastly to continue with Shadow Ball, but the attack passed harmlessly through Chatot.

"Feather Dance!" Anna commanded, and Chatot flung a flurry of white feathers at Gastly. The feathers not only caused damage but also significantly lowered Gastly's attack power. "Now, Snarl!" Anna added, and Chatot emitted a dark, menacing sound that further weakened Gastly.

Harrison's frustration grew as Gastly struggled. "Use Icy Wind!" he ordered. The icy blast was meant to cover the field and slow down Chatot. However, Chatot used Double Team, creating multiple copies of itself to dodge the attack. Chatot then used Snarl twice more, finally knocking out Gastly.

Harrison recalled his fainted Gastly, his expression a mix of frustration and determination. He sent out his second Pokémon, an Alolan Sandshrew. "Come on, Sandshrew! Let's finish this!" Harrison said with renewed energy. Sandshrew, an ice/steel type from the Alola region, was well-rested and ready for battle.

Chatot, though exhausted from the previous fight, began with Feather Dance and Snarl to lower Sandshrew's attack. However, Sandshrew used Dig to burrow underground, avoiding both attacks. "Sandshrew, use Swords Dance!" Harrison instructed, and Sandshrew boosted its attack power while hidden.

"Now, Sandstorm!" Harrison shouted, unleashing a swirling storm of sand and debris across the battlefield. The sandstorm made it difficult for Chatot to maintain its flight. "If only we knew any strong wind moves," Anna thought, glancing at Chatot.

Chatot tried to use Roost to heal itself, but as soon as it landed, Sandshrew emerged from the ground and hit Chatot with a powerful Rock-type move, Rollout. "No, Chatot, dodge!" Anna cried, but the Sandshrew rolled through Chatot's Double Team copies and struck the real one.

Chatot managed to retaliate with a Steel Wing, but Sandshrew dodged using Powder Snow, which unfortunately managed to freeze Chatot. Before Anna could react, Sandshrew used Metal Claw on the frozen Chatot, knocking it out and ending the match.

Harrison raised his fist in victory as he recalled Sandshrew. "Good job, Sandshrew!" he cheered.

Anna, though disappointed, smiled and approached Harrison. "Well done, Harrison. You've got a great team," she said graciously.

Jake, while upset at the loss, cheered up at his grandmother's sportsmanship. "It was a tough one," he admitted, watching the remaining matches with a renewed sense of excitement.

Eva emerged victorious in her match, though it was a close call. She once again called on her trusty Ribombee, but the Pokémon was visibly worn out from its previous battles. Her opponent was a young man named Kyle, a local trainer known for his love of electric types. Kyle had recently moved to the area from Vermilion City in the Kanto region, where he had trained extensively with electric Pokémon. His Shinx, which he affectionately called Sparky, was known for its impressive speed and power.

As the battle began, Eva and Kyle faced off with determination.

"Britney, let's show them what we've got!" Eva encouraged, though her voice held a note of fatigue.

"Sparky, Wild Charge!" Kyle commanded, his face lit up with excitement. The electric type charged forward with crackling energy, its body enveloped in a powerful electric aura.

"Struggle Bug, Britney!" Eva called out, hoping her Pokémon's last reserves of energy could make a difference. Ribombee unleashed a wave of buggy energy, but the sheer force of Shinx's Wild Charge led to a dramatic clash of power.

The two attacks collided with a thunderous explosion, sending both Pokémon crashing to the ground. "No!" Eva gasped as she saw both Ribombee and Shinx fall, each knocked out from the fierce exchange.

Despite the outcome, Eva was proud. "You did great, Britney. You managed to take out Darmanitan, Spheal, and Shinx. Rest up," she whispered as she recalled her Pokémon.

For the second part of her battle, Eva decided to take a risk by using a borrowed Patrat. This decision was interesting; the Patrat had a bug affinity that could exploit an opponent's weaknesses. Kyle, unfamiliar with Patrat's typing, sent out his Exeggcute, a grass/psychic Pokémon known for its resilience but weak to bug-type moves.

"Alright, Patrat, let's get this done!" Eva commanded with a hint of confidence.

"Exeggcute, use Psybeam!" Kyle ordered, hoping to catch Patrat off guard with a powerful psychic attack.

"Pin Missile, now!" Eva shouted, seizing the opportunity. Patrat launched a barrage of tiny, piercing projectiles. The attack was double super-effective against Exeggcute due to its grass and psychic types, and the barrage struck true.

"Watch out, Exeggcute! Counter with Reflect!" Kyle urged, but it was too late. The Pin Missile hit with precision, causing significant damage.

"Keep the pressure on with Fury Cutter!" Eva instructed. Patrat's claws glowed with a cutting edge as it followed up, slashing through Exeggcute's defenses.

The combination of Pin Missile and Fury Cutter proved too much for the egg-like Pokémon. Exeggcute fell to the ground, unable to continue. Kyle recalled his defeated Pokémon, looking both frustrated and impressed.

"Nice job, Mrs. Lindenberg. Your Patrat has really some moves," Kyle said, extending a hand in sportsmanship.

"Thanks, Kyle. You had a strong team. Good luck with the rest of the tournament," Eva replied with a smile.

Eva was relieved and pleased with her performance. With Ribombee and Patrat having secured victories, she was one step closer to advancing further in the tournament.

The two teenagers were again salivating at the sight of Eva.

"Alright, everyone," Frank announced with enthusiasm, "we're moving into the 4th round! With four contestants left, that means we'll have two matches today. This is also the last round with two-on-two battles, so get ready for some exciting action!"

The crowd buzzed with anticipation as the first battle of the round was set: Eva versus Harrison, the trainer who had previously defeated Anna, Eva's mother-in-law.

"Go, Patrat!" Eva shouted, sending out the chipmunk-like Pokémon.

"Go, Sandshrew!" Harrison responded, releasing his sturdy, ice/steel-type Pokémon.

"Go, Mom!" Jake cheered from the sidelines, his excitement palpable.

"Go, boobs!" one of the horny teenagers whispered to his buddy, their eyes glued to Eva's chest.

"Let the battle begin!" Frank's voice rang out, signaling the start of the match.

"Patrat, start with Quiver Dance!" Eva commanded, her tone focused. Patrat began to twirl gracefully, its movements boosting its special attack, special defense, and speed.

"Sandshrew, use Defense Curl and then Rollout!" Harrison ordered with determination. Sandshrew curled into a tight ball, its defenses hardened, before rolling forward with increasing momentum.

Patrat's Quiver Dance successfully amplified its stats, preparing it for the incoming attack. As Sandshrew rolled towards it with impressive speed, Eva quickly gave her next command.

"Patrat, use Detect to dodge!" Eva instructed, hoping to outmaneuver Harrison's strategy. Patrat closed its eyes momentarily, sensing the danger, and sidestepped the powerful Rollout with precision.

"Change of tactics, Sandshrew—Dig!" Harrison called out, signaling his Pokémon to burrow into the ground.

"Alright, Patrat, Quiver Dance again and follow up with another Detect!" Eva decided to further enhance Patrat's abilities. As Patrat danced, it became even more agile. With its enhanced senses, Patrat evaded Sandshrew's sudden emergence from the ground.

"Now, Patrat, use Pin Missile!" Eva directed. Patrat's paws glowed with a light green aura as it launched a rapid barrage of bug-type projectiles towards Sandshrew.

"Block it, Sandshrew!" Harrison shouted, urging his Pokémon to curl up defensively.

Despite Sandshrew's attempt to shield itself with Defense Curl, the Pin Missiles struck true, each missile hitting its target with precision.

"Follow up with Fury Cutter!" Eva commanded. Patrat's claws glowed a fierce green as it prepared for the next move.

"Counter with Metal Claw!" Harrison ordered. Sandshrew's claws glinted with a metallic sheen as it clashed with Patrat's attacks.

The two small Pokémon engaged in a high-speed clash, their attacks connecting in a rapid exchange that resembled a fencing match. Patrat's claws met Sandshrew's with each strike.

"Try to use Detect as well!" shouted Eva, aiming to enhance Patrat's defensive capabilities.

With each use of Detect, Patrat managed to avoid Sandshrew's Metal Claws and continued to land powerful Fury Cutter attacks. The intensity of Patrat's strikes increased with each successive hit, thanks to Fury Cutter's stacking power.

"Use Powder Snow to block it!" Harrison attempted a new strategy. Sandshrew exhaled a flurry of icy wind to try and disrupt Patrat's assault.

"Detect and dodge!" Eva instructed, ensuring Patrat could evade the freezing attack. Patrat deftly avoided the Powder Snow, its boosted speed and defensive maneuvers keeping it out of harm's way.

"Again, Fury Cutter and finish it!" Eva shouted with determination. Patrat unleashed a final, mighty blow with its bug-type attack, striking Sandshrew with overwhelming force and knocking it out.

"Sandshrew is unable to battle. Please choose your second Pokémon!" Frank announced.

"Thank you, Sandshrew, you did well," Harrison said, recalling his defeated Pokémon. "Now, rest up. I choose you, Sudowoodo!" Harrison sent out his next Pokémon, a rock-type Pokémon that stood tall and resilient.

With the battle far from over, Eva and Harrison prepared for the next stage of their intense showdown.

A large, tree-like creature emerged onto the battlefield. Sudowoodo, though resembling a grass-type Pokémon with its wooden appearance, was actually a rock type. Its rugged, bark-like exterior and sturdy stance made it an imposing opponent.

"The battle can continue!" Frank announced, his voice echoing across the arena.

"Okay, Patrat, use Fury Cutter again!" Eva commanded, her voice laced with determination.

"Counter with Rock Slide!" Harrison ordered, his gaze fixed intently on the field.

Patrat launched into another Fury Cutter, its glowing claws slashing through the air. However, Sudowoodo responded with a powerful Rock Slide. Boulders tumbled from the air above Patrat and crashed down on it. Despite Patrat's initial attack landing first, Rock Slide's counter struck with formidable force and even the Detect move was unable to help it. Patrat was buried under falling stones, its small body battered by the force of the attack.

"Oh no," Eva gasped in fear as she saw what happened.

Sudowoodo's eyes glowed with rock-type energy and the boulders were lifted in the air. This revealed knocked out Patrat.

"Patrat is unable to battle," Frank declared, his voice carrying a note of finality. Patrat lay motionless on the ground, unable to rise.

"Choose your next Pokémon!" Frank called out.

Lenny the Venomoth fluttered eagerly around Eva, her wings shimmering with vibrant colors. The bug/poison-type Pokémon seemed ready to take on the challenge and avenge her new little friend.

However, Venomoth's level was way over 30.

"I'm afraid I have to give up," Eva said, surprising everyone with her sudden decision.

"What? Why?" Harrison asked, his surprise evident. He had been thoroughly enjoying the fierce competition and had expected a more intense showdown.

Her expression was apologetic yet calm. "I don't have any Pokémon under level 30 with me. So, I would be disqualified anyway."

Eva offered a handshake, her eyes reflecting the spirit of sportsmanship. "Sorry for the anticlimax. Good luck in the finals. You've earned it."

With that, Eva waved at Lenny to follow her and stepped back, her decision loud and clear. The crowd murmured with mixed emotions—some disappointed, others impressed by how far Eva made it. Only the two teenagers were far more impressed by her large bouncy chest and her swirling hips.

Harrison nodded appreciatively and prepared himself for the next round, ready to face the challenge that awaited him in the finals.

"Okay, as Eva decided to give up, we have our first finalist. Now, let's move on to the next battle. Get ready, and begin!" Frank announced, his voice echoing through the arena.

The crowd buzzed with excitement as the next match was set to begin. Angie, recognizable for her red hair, an experienced foreman at the ranch, stepped confidently onto the field. Angie had been working with Pokémon for over a decade, and her skills were well respected. Opposite her stood Raymond, a young and somewhat arrogant trainer with a reputation for brashness. He was eager to prove himself and climb the ranks of the Pokémon League and he was kind of forced to worked at the ranch by his family.

"Go, Poliwhirl!" Angie called out, sending her trusty Water-type Pokémon into the fray. Poliwhirl, with its well-trained muscles and determined expression, was ready for action.

"Eevee, let's show them what we've got!" Raymond shouted, releasing his versatile Eevee. The small, agile Pokémon looked up at Raymond with trust and determination.

"Poliwhirl, use Brick Break!" Angie commanded.

Poliwhirl launched a powerful punch, smashing into Eevee. Despite Eevee's valiant efforts with Swift and Shadow Ball, Poliwhirl's Brick Break and the subsequent Focus Blast overwhelmed the attacks. Eevee's attacks were intercepted and nullified by Poliwhirl's Bubble Beam, which shattered the Shadow Balls and sent Swift scattering.

Raymond watched in frustration as his Eevee was defeated. "No way! How did it go down so quickly?"

He called back his defeated Eevee and sent out his next Pokémon. "Bayleef, let's turn this around!" Bayleef appeared, its green leaves rustling as it prepared for battle.

In the second round, Bayleef faced off against Poliwhirl once more. Raymond quickly took command. "Bayleef, start with Vine Whip!"

Bayleef's vines lashed out, wrapping around Poliwhirl and slamming it into the ground with considerable force. "Now, Razor Leaf!"

The sharp leaves cut through the air, striking Poliwhirl and finishing it off. Poliwhirl slumped to the ground, defeated.

Angie called back her Pokémon and sent out her next choice, Koffing. And lot of people in the audience realized that the match was almost done. Angie was really proficient in training poison-type Pokémon and Koffing was her last exquisite specimen.

"Koffing, use Double Team!" Angie instructed. Koffing began to create multiple copies of itself, confusing Bayleef with its sudden duplications.

"Razor Leaf again!" Raymond ordered, determined to clear out the clones.

Bayleef's attack sliced through some of the Koffing clones, but Koffing's skilled Double Team made it difficult to hit the real one. As Koffing and its clones swirled around Bayleef, they released a cloud of Smog, enveloping the battlefield in a noxious haze.

"Vine Whip! Clear out those clones!" Raymond shouted, his frustration growing as his Bayleef struggled to cope with the smog and the swift-moving clones.

"Keep it up, Koffing! Use Sludge Bomb!" Angie commanded.

Koffing spewed a toxic and super-effective Sludge Bomb, which not only dealt significant damage but also poisoned Bayleef. Bayleef continued to struggle, its attacks becoming increasingly inaccurate due to the poison and the smog cloud.

"Try to get a hit with Solar Beam!" Raymond pleaded, but the attack took a long time to charge and then it missed, further weakening Bayleef.

"Finish it with Venoshock!" Angie ordered. The attack, stronger against a poisoned foe, struck Bayleef with devastating effect, ending the match decisively.

"Bayleef is unable to battle, which means we have our second finalist!" Frank declared, raising his voice to be heard over the applause.

Rachel leaned over to the kids, a knowing smile on her face. "See guys, that Raymond guy was completely outmaneuvered. He didn't adjust his strategy, and Angie's Koffing was just too quick. Bayleef should have used a wider range of moves. Something like Petal Dance might have made a difference, but Angie would have probably overcome that, too."

Jake looked up, wide-eyed. "Wow, Angie's Pokémon are amazing. I hope she wins!"

Frank's voice rang out again, signaling the end of the second round. "Congratulations to our finalists! Get ready for the final showdown, coming up next!"

The final battle between Harrison and Angie commenced without delay, the tension palpable in the air. The first round pitted Angie's Koffing against Harrison's Sudowoodo.

As the match began, Angie's Koffing, which has already demonstrated its speed and tactical prowess, quickly took control. "Koffing, use Double Team!" Angie commanded. Koffing created multiple illusions of itself, disorienting Sudowoodo.

Harrison frowned in concentration. "Sudowoodo, Rock Slide!"

Rock Slide crashed down on the battlefield, but Koffing's swift movements and the numerous clones dodged the falling rocks with ease. The attack barely made an impact, only managing to destroy a few of Koffing's illusions. "Stay on target, Sudowoodo!" Harrison shouted, frustrated.

As Koffing continued to evade, it spread Toxic Spikes across the arena. The spikes, sharp and toxic, ensured that any Pokémon entering the battlefield would be poisoned. With a smirk, Angie instructed, "Now, Koffing, use Gyro Ball!"

"Try to use Counter!" Harrison yelled in desperation.

Koffing spun rapidly, its steel-typed Gyro Ball connecting solidly with Sudowoodo. The attack, super-effective against the Rock-type, knocked Sudowoodo out with a decisive impact, not giving it a chance to use Counter.

"Sudowoodo is unable to battle. Harrison, choose your second Pokémon," Frank announced, his voice ringing clearly over the murmurs of the crowd.

As Sudowoodo was recalled, Harrison sent out his next Pokémon with a determined look. "Go, Slowpoke!"

Rachel leaned towards the kids, her eyes gleaming with enthusiasm. "Look, kids, Harrison is trying to use type advantage against Angie."

Monika raised an eyebrow, puzzled. "What do you mean, Mom?"

Rachel turned to Jake, who was intently watching the match. "Jake, can you explain it?"

Jake puffed out his chest with pride. "Slowpoke is a Psychic type, so it has an advantage over Koffing, which is Poison type."

"Correct!" Rachel said, giving Jake a high-five. "Great job, buddy."

"'Nerd,'" Monika teased, rolling her eyes at her cousin.

Jake, ignoring Monika's jab, asked, "So do you think Angie will win?"

"It depends on how loud you cheer!" Rachel winked, encouraging him to support Angie.

The match continued as Slowpoke, already poisoned from the Toxic Spikes, began to retaliate. "Slowpoke, use Confusion!" Harrison called out. Slowpoke's psychic powers gripped Koffing and slammed it repeatedly into the ground. Despite the forceful attacks, Koffing remained resilient.

"Koffing, don't let up! Use Shadow Ball!" Angie shouted.

Koffing, gathering ghost-type energy, launched a powerful Shadow Ball. The attack hit Slowpoke with tremendous force, and the Psychic-type Pokémon slumped to the ground, defeated by the super-effective move.

"Just one move??" Harrison exhaled incredulously.

"Slowpoke is unable to battle. Koffing is the winner!" Frank announced, his voice booming with excitement. "Harrison, choose your final Pokémon!"

The crowd erupted in cheers as Angie's Koffing stood victorious. The stage was set for the final showdown.

"Harrison, your final Pokémon!" Frank called out as he gestured to the battlefield.

Harrison threw a Poké Ball into the air, and with a flash of violet and pink, Gligar emerged. The creature had large, bat-like wings and a scorpion-like tail, hovering above the ground with a mischievous glint in its eyes.

"Gligar, I choose you!" Harrison announced confidently.

Monika squinted at the Pokémon. "Why is he using that flying Pokémon?"

Jake, who was still absorbing the excitement of the battle, looked up. "I don't know," he admitted, frowning. "Maybe he doesn't have any other Pokémon under level 30?"

"Probably to dodge those Toxic Spikes. Or maybe," Rachel interjected, "it's because Gligar is also part Ground type."

Both kids turned to Rachel with puzzled expressions. "What?" Monika asked.

Rachel nodded. "Yes, Gligar has a dual typing of Flying and Ground. Ground-type moves are super-effective against Poison-type Pokémon, like Koffing."

Jake's eyes widened. "Oh, I didn't know that!"

Monika smiled at her mother and thought. "Okay, so my mom's nerd, too."

The final battle began. Angie's Koffing floated into the fray, its toxic fumes swirling ominously. "Koffing, start with Destiny Bond!" Angie commanded.

Koffing's eyes glowed with a ghost-type energy as it prepared the status move. Destiny Bond was a risky tactic where, if Koffing was knocked out, Gligar would fall with it. Harrison's expression changed from desperate to resigned as he realized the implications.

Gligar hovered uncertainly, and Harrison quickly weighed his options. "Gligar, use Slash!" he ordered, hoping for a decisive move.

But before Gligar could land its attack, Koffing's Destiny Bond took effect. With a sad sigh, Harrison threw in the towel, acknowledging the inevitable outcome.

"Everyone, we have our winner!" Frank announced with enthusiasm as the crowd erupted in cheers. "Congratulations to Angie!"

The crowd's chants grew louder as Angie's supporters celebrated.

"ANGIE! ANGIE! ANGIE!"

Angie, smiling with pride, waved to the cheering crowd, while Harrison, though disappointed, nodded in respect toward his opponent.

Rachel turned to the kids, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "What a finale! Angie was brilliant! Now you two, come and help me in the centre with treating all the Pokemon."

To herself, she half-angrily thought that they could all go to hell instead of having battles on the weekend.

As the last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon, Rachel and the kids finally stepped out of the Pokémon Center. They were tired, but happy. When they reached the rest of the participant, they could see that the air was warm and filled with the mouthwatering aroma of grilled food. Laughter and the hum of conversation drifted over from the makeshift party that had sprung up on the lawn outside the main house.

Long tables were set up, piled high with food—juicy burgers with meat or tofu, grilled vegetables, and all sorts of sides. A few of the ranch hands were gathered around a grill, flipping meat and vegetables, while others clinked glasses of cold drinks. Frank was in the middle of the grilling team, talking with everybody around him and making dirty jokes. For the adults, there were beers and homemade cider, while the kids sipped on lemonade and fruit punch. Angie, still basking in the glow of her victory, was seated at the center of the gathering, surrounded by friends and family who congratulated her.

Rachel sneered as she took in the scene. "Well, looks like we haven't missed the party," she said, leading Monika and Jake over to an empty spot at one of the tables, so they could enjoy their hard-earned meal.

As they settled in, Monika reached for a plate of grilled corn, while Jake's eyes were glued to the sizzling burgers. "I'm starving!" he said, grabbing one and eagerly taking a bite.

"Slow down, you idiot, or you'll choke," his older cousin teased him, though she couldn't help but smile at Jake's enthusiasm.

After a while, the group relaxed into the evening, enjoying the food, the cool night air, and the companionship. The kids played games on the grass, while the adults chatted and laughed, recounting highlights from the tournament.

As the night deepened, Monika and Jake found themselves sitting a little apart from the others, the soft glow of the lanterns casting a warm light over their faces. Monika leaned back on her hands, looking up at the stars starting to appear in the night sky.

"Hey, Mon," Jake said suddenly, his voice filled with determination.

"Hm?" She turned to him, curious.

"When my eggs hatch… I'm going to train it really hard," Jake said, his eyes shining with a fierce resolve. "And then, I'm going to be the next one to win this tournament. And then all the other tournaments. Just you wait."

Monika looked at her cousin, surprised by the sudden intensity in his voice. For a moment, she doubted him—Jake had always been enthusiastic, but winning even this local tournament was no small feat. Yet, as she watched him, she saw something different in his expression, a seriousness that hadn't been there before.

"Maybe," she thought to herself, "maybe he really could do it. With enough luck, I guess."

Out loud, she just teased him, "Well, maybe in milion year."

Jake grinned at her, his confidence unwavering. "You'll see, Mon. I'll be the champion one day, and everyone will be cheering for me!"

As they sat there, the sounds of the party around them, Monika couldn't help but feel a little spark of excitement herself. Maybe Jake would win. And even if he didn't, his determination would take him far. In any case, she knew one thing for sure—whatever happened, it was going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Both kids turned back to the party, the night stretching out before them, full of possibilities.
