Chapter 4: Chapter 04: Morning Revelations
Eva woke up as the first rays of sunlight filtered through her window, gently illuminating the room. She yawned, stretching her arms above her head before sitting up. Glancing over to the other side of the bed, she smiled at the sight of her son, Jake, still peacefully asleep. The worries of yesterday seemed like a distant memory, and she felt relieved that the day ahead might bring some normalcy.
"Jakey, good morning," the blonde mother murmured softly, reaching out to place a gentle hand on his shoulder. She caressed him, hoping to ease him awake.
But the youngling didn't stir.
"Jake, wake up," she said, this time with a bit more firmness, giving him a gentle shake. "Breakfast time."
As she shook him, Jake rolled from his side to his back, revealing something large and round clutched to his chest. Eva's eyes widened in shock. She quickly pulled down the blanket to get a better look.
"What the heck? JAKE!!" she shouted, her voice laced with alarm.
"Ahhh! Mommy!" Jake cried out in fear, jolted awake by her sudden outburst. Memories of the previous night's encounters flooded back, making him momentarily disoriented.
"WHAT IS THAT? WHY DO YOU HAVE IT HERE?" Eva demanded, pointing at the large Pokémon egg nestled in his arms.
Jake blinked, still groggy and trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. He looked down at the egg and then back up at his mother, confusion and guilt mixing in his expression.
"Sorry, Mommy. I... I found it outside, and it was cold out there. So I wanted to keep it warm," he explained, his voice trembling slightly.
"Outside? When did you go outside?" Eva's surprise quickly shifted to concern as she tried to process his words.
"I... I... sorry, Mommy," Jake mumbled, his cheeks flushing as he avoided her piercing gaze.
"Look at me, Jake," Eva said, her tone firm but not unkind. "Tell me when and where you got that egg."
Jake hesitated, his mind racing for an answer that wouldn't make him sound foolish. He didn't want to lie, but the thought of admitting he'd gone outside in the middle of the night terrified him. Tears welled up in his eyes, and soon he was crying, overwhelmed by the situation.
"Mommy, I... I found it... found it outside," he managed to say between sobs.
Eva's heart softened as she watched her son struggle. "Jakey, don't cry," she said, reaching out to wipe away his tears. "But you need to tell me the truth. When were you outside? Did you find it yesterday with Grandpa?"
Jake shook his head, still crying. "No, Mommy," he admitted, his voice quivering. "I went out last night."
Eva's breath caught in her throat as the realization hit her. She listened intently, her horror growing with each word as Jake recounted his nocturnal adventure—the release of the Sneasel, the encounters in the forest, and finally, discovering the lone egg.
"Jakey," she whispered, pulling him into a tight embrace as tears of her own threatened to spill. The thought of her little boy facing such dangers alone, in the dead of night, sent shivers down her spine. He could have been hurt or worse.
She pulled back slightly, looking him in the eyes. "Promise me," she said, her voice firm but gentle. "Promise me that you will never, ever go outside by yourself again."
"But, Mommy, I was with Speedy," Jake tried to explain, feeling the need to justify his actions.
"No, mister," Eva said, shaking her head. "It doesn't matter if Speedy was with you. You need to promise me that if you ever feel something strange or have a hunch like this again, you'll come to me first. We'll handle it together, okay?"
"But Mommy, you were sleeping," Jake protested weakly, his voice tinged with guilt.
Eva's expression softened, but she remained resolute. "Jake, I didn't hear you promise me anything yet," she reminded him gently. "If you promise to come to me next time, I'll promise that I won't be angry at all if you wake me up. Okay? Now, promise me."
Jake hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Okay, Mommy, I promise," he said, finally relenting. He leaned into her, wrapping his small arms around her waist.
"Good boy," Eva murmured, hugging him back with relief.
After a moment, Jake pulled back slightly. "And Mommy?" he asked hesitantly.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"I'm sorry. I know I should have stayed here."
Eva sighed softly, brushing his hair out of his eyes. "Look, Jakey, the most important thing is that you're safe. And that you understand what you did was wrong. But," she added with a teasingly stern look, "I think no cartoons for at least a week. Understood?"
Jake's face fell, his eyes widening in disbelief. "But Mom!"
"No 'but Mom' me, young man," Eva said, trying to suppress a smile at his dramatic reaction. "Now, get up and come help me with breakfast. Then we'll take a closer look at that egg you found."
As Jake scrambled out of bed, the weight of the night's events began to lift, replaced by the warmth of his mother's love and the promise of a new day—one that would hopefully be a little less adventurous.
Eva moved into the kitchen, still feeling the lingering tension from the conversation with Jake, but determined to start the day on a positive note. The familiar warmth of the morning sun streaming through the windows helped to settle her nerves. She took a deep breath, focusing on the comforting routine of preparing breakfast.
"Alright, Jakey," she said, offering him a gentle smile. "Why don't you help me with the veggies? You can wash them under the faucet."
Jake nodded eagerly, still feeling a bit guilty but wanting to make it up to his mom. He climbed up onto a step stool by the sink, reaching for the basket of fresh vegetables—tomatoes, bell peppers, and a few carrots. He turned on the water, carefully rinsing each one, making sure to get them nice and clean.
Eva watched him for a moment, her heart softening at the sight of him trying so hard to be helpful. "You're doing a great job, Jakey," she said, reaching over to ruffle his hair.
As Jake continued with his task, Eva grabbed a few eggs from the basket on the counter and cracked them into a bowl. She whisked them together, adding a bit of milk, salt, and pepper. Just as she was about to pour the mixture into a hot pan, she had an idea.
"Lenny, come on out," Eva called, pulling a Pokéball from her apron pocket. With a flash of light, her Venomoth appeared, fluttering its powdery wings with a soft hum.
"Hey, Lenny," Eva greeted the Venomoth warmly. "Could you give me a hand? Use your Confusion to help mix the scrambled eggs in the pan."
Lenny's antennae twitched with psychic energy, and its eyes glowed a soft blue as it focused on the task. The bowl of eggs floated gently from Eva's hands, and with a small tilt of her head, Lenny poured the mixture into the waiting pan. Then, with delicate precision, the Venomoth used her Psychic powers to stir the eggs as they cooked, keeping them light and fluffy.
"Wow, Lenny, that looks perfect!" Eva praised, smiling at the Venomoth.
Jake looked over from the sink, his eyes wide with admiration. "Lenny is so cool, Mommy! She can do anything!"
Eva chuckled, feeling a sense of pride. "She's a real helper, just like you!"
Once Jake finished washing the vegetables, Eva took them from him, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek as thanks. She began to chop them into small pieces, adding them to the pan with the eggs, which Lenny continued to stir.
"Lenny, can you also set the table?" Eva asked as she finished up with the cooking. The Venomoth responded with another soft hum, using her Psychic powers to float the plates, forks, and glasses from the cupboard to the kitchen table, arranging them neatly.
"Thanks, Lenny," Eva said as she plated the scrambled eggs and vegetables, placing them on the table. "And thanks to you too, Jakey. You were a big help."
Jake beamed with pride, climbing down from the stool and moving to sit at the table. He was still processing everything that had happened the night before, but the normalcy of breakfast with his mom—and Lenny's impressive help—was a comfort.
Before sitting down to eat, Eva quickly remembered her Pokémon companions who had been such a great help to her. She wanted to make sure they were well-fed too. After all, they were part of the family.
"Hold on a second, Jakey," Eva said, getting up from her chair. "Let's make sure Lenny and Maya have something to eat as well."
She walked over to a cabinet where she kept Pokémon food, pulling out two bowls. For Lenny, her Venomoth, she prepared a mix of specialized nectar and Poké Puffs that Lenny loved. She drizzled the nectar over the soft, sweet treats, knowing it would be a perfect breakfast for the delicate Pokémon.
"Lenny, this is for you!" Eva called with a smile, placing the bowl on the counter where Lenny could easily reach it. The Venomoth fluttered over, eagerly hovering above the bowl before dipping down to enjoy the meal.
Next, Eva grabbed another bowl and filled it with a hearty mix of berries, seeds, and a protein blend for Maya, her Decidueye. The large, owl-like Pokémon had a calm demeanor, and Eva knew she preferred her food fresh and nutritious. As she placed the bowl on the floor near the table, she called out, "Maya, breakfast time!"
Maya, who had been perched quietly on a windowsill, swooped down gracefully, landing beside the bowl. She blinked her sharp eyes at Eva and gave a soft hoot of gratitude before starting to eat.
Jake watched his mom take care of the Pokémon, feeling a sense of warmth in his chest. It wasn't just about him—his mom always made sure everyone, even their Pokémon, was taken care of. He felt proud to be part of this little family, where everyone looked out for each other.
Once Lenny and Maya were happily eating their breakfast, Eva returned to the table, taking her seat across from Jake. "Now, we can all eat together," she said with a smile, looking around the room at her son and their Pokémon, all enjoying their morning meal.
"Thanks, Mommy," Jake said, digging into his scrambled eggs. He glanced over at Lenny and Maya, feeling happy that they were all sharing this moment.
Eva nodded, pleased that everything was finally settling into a peaceful morning. The sunlight continued to fill the kitchen, and the sounds of everyone enjoying their food created a soothing, homey atmosphere. It was the perfect way to start the day after the events of the night before, reminding them all of the comfort of being together as a family.
As the morning continued, a gentle sense of contentment settled over Eva. She glanced around the kitchen, seeing Jake happily eating his breakfast and their Pokémon, Lenny and Maya, enjoying their meals too. The warmth of the sunlight streaming through the windows made the moment feel perfect, almost like a picture from a memory she'd want to hold onto forever.
But as she took a sip of her coffee, a twinge of longing stirred in her heart. There was someone missing from this cozy scene—David, her husband and Jake's father. She hadn't heard from him in a while, and the thought of him being away from home made her chest tighten with a subtle ache.
Eva put down her mug and reached for her phone, which was sitting on the kitchen counter. She unlocked the screen and opened up her contacts, scrolling until she found David's name. With a quick tap, she initiated the call, bringing the phone up to her ear as it began to ring.
Jake noticed his mom on the phone and looked up curiously. "Mommy, are you calling Dad?" he asked, his voice tinged with hope.
Eva nodded, offering him a small smile. "Yes, Jakey. I just want to see how he's doing."
The phone continued to ring, each passing moment stretching out in the quiet kitchen. Eva's smile faded slightly as the call went unanswered. She knew David was often busy with his work, sometimes in areas where reception was poor, but it still bothered her that she couldn't reach him.
"Come on, David… pick up," she whispered to herself, glancing at the screen as the ringing tone echoed in her ear.
But there was no answer. The call eventually went to voicemail, and Eva let out a small sigh of disappointment. She considered leaving a message but decided against it, not wanting to worry Jake or spoil the peaceful morning they were having.
With a resigned sigh, she ended the call and set the phone back down on the counter. She tried to push the worry out of her mind, telling herself that David was probably just caught up in something important. Still, she couldn't help but feel a little empty without him there to share this moment with them.
Jake noticed the change in her expression and asked, "Is Dad okay?"
Eva quickly put on a reassuring smile. "I'm sure he's fine, sweetheart. He's just busy, that's all. He'll call us back when he can."
Jake nodded, accepting her answer, but Eva could see the slight concern in his eyes. She reached across the table and ruffled his hair affectionately. "Don't worry, Jakey. We'll talk to him soon."
Despite her reassuring words, Eva's thoughts lingered on David as she returned to her breakfast. She missed him more than she wanted to admit, especially in moments like these when the family was together. But she also knew that worrying wouldn't change anything, so she tried to focus on the positive—she was here with Jake, and that was what mattered most right now.
Eva took a deep breath, pushing the thoughts of David to the back of her mind for the time being. She would try calling him later, and hopefully, he'd pick up then. For now, she wanted to make the most of this peaceful morning with her son and their Pokémon, cherishing the moments they had together.
After her unsuccessful attempt to reach David, Eva decided to shift her focus. If she couldn't speak with her husband, she could at least reach out to someone else who had been a big help recently—her brother, Frank. She owed him a thank you for his quick thinking the other day when things had nearly gone awry at the ranch. Without his support, things could have been much worse.
Eva picked up her phone again and scrolled through her contacts until she found Frank's name. With a quick tap, she initiated the call, hoping that he might have a few moments to chat.
The phone rang just a couple of times before Frank picked up. "Hey, sis," his voice came through, sounding a bit rushed but still warm.
"Hey, Frankie," Eva replied, feeling a wave of relief just hearing his voice. "I just wanted to call and thank you again for your help the other day. You really came through for us."
Frank chuckled on the other end. "No need to thank me, Eva. You know I've always got your back."
"I know," she said, smiling. "But still, I appreciate it. Everything's been a bit hectic lately, and I just wanted you to know how grateful I am."
There was a brief pause before Frank spoke again, his tone more serious. "I'm glad everything's okay now, Eva. But listen, I'm actually in the middle of something right now—can we talk later?"
Eva could hear the urgency in his voice and understood immediately. "Of course, Frank. I didn't mean to interrupt. Just give me a call when you're free, okay?"
"I will, I promise," Frank assured her. "Take care, Evie. And give Jake a hug from me."
"Will do. Talk to you soon," Eva said, ending the call with a sense of reassurance.
Though their conversation was brief, it still comforted her to hear from Frank. Knowing that he was out there, ready to support her when needed, made her feel less alone in the absence of David's presence.
With that, Eva set the phone down and turned her attention back to the kitchen, where Jake was finishing up his breakfast. She pushed aside the lingering worry in her heart, focusing instead on the present moment with her son and their Pokémon. There would be time to catch up with Frank later, and hopefully, David would get in touch soon. For now, all she could do was keep moving forward and take care of her family the best she could.
After they finished breakfast, Eva looked around the kitchen and gave a satisfied nod. "Alright, team," she announced with a smile, "let's start washing up."
Lenny the Venomoth and Maya the Decidueye both fluttered their wings in response, already anticipating their tasks. Using their psychic abilities, they began to lift the dirty dishes and utensils off the table, guiding them gently through the air toward the dishwasher. Plates, cups, and forks floated in a neat procession, almost as if they were dancing in mid-air.
Jake, not wanting to be left out, grabbed his own plate and carefully started carrying it toward the dishwasher. But maneuvering through the kitchen with all the floating dishes wasn't as easy as it looked. He ducked under a levitating fork, sidestepped a hovering cup, and nearly tripped over a spoon that whizzed past his head.
"Careful, Jakey!" Eva called out, trying not to laugh as she watched her son's determined expression.
Jake grinned back at her, clearly enjoying the challenge. "I got it, Mom!" he said, his small feet shuffling carefully across the floor. Just as he reached the dishwasher, he proudly slid his plate inside, narrowly avoiding a collision with a floating knife.
"Great job, Jake!" Eva praised, giving him a thumbs-up.
Jake beamed with pride as he watched the Pokémon finish up, their psychic powers making quick work of the remaining dishes. The kitchen was soon spotless, with everything neatly placed in the dishwasher, ready to be cleaned.
While the Pokémon continued tidying up, Eva decided to make one more phone call. She quickly dialed Rachel's number, her sister-in-law and a trusted friend. The phone rang only once before Rachel picked up.
"Hey, girl!" Rachel's cheerful voice greeted her. "What's up?"
"Hi, Rachel," Eva replied, trying to keep her tone light. "I was wondering if I could pay you a quick visit this morning? There's something I need to talk to you about."
Rachel paused for a moment before responding, "I'd love to, but I'm actually just leaving the house. How about you meet me at the Pokémon Center instead? I'll be there in about fifteen minutes."
"That works for me," Eva agreed, feeling a bit relieved. "I'll see you there, then."
"Great! See you soon," Rachel said before ending the call.
Eva put her phone down and turned back to Jake, who was now playfully chasing after a spoon that Lenny had deliberately sent floating just out of his reach. She couldn't help but smile at the sight, grateful for these simple, joyful moments with her son and their Pokémon.
"Alright, Jake," Eva called out, "get ready to go. We're heading out to see Aunt Rachel at the Pokémon Center."
Eva then turned to her two Pokémon.
"And you two, please take this Poke cubes and bring them outside to the rest of the gang. Okay?"
Jake stopped his playful antics and nodded eagerly, clearly excited to visit Rachel. Maya gripped the large bag of Pokémon food and flew outside in the garden with it. Many enthusiastic voices were suddenly heard. With that, the small family prepared to head out, ready to face whatever the day might bring.
After getting dressed and ready to go, Eva and Jake stepped out into the crisp morning air. The sun was already climbing higher in the sky, casting a warm glow over the ranch. As they walked along the path toward the Pokémon Center, Eva decided to probe a bit more about the mysterious egg Jake had found.
"Jake," Eva began, her tone gentle but curious, "can you tell me a bit more about where you found that egg? I know you said that it was dark, but do you remember anything about the place?"
Jake furrowed his brow, trying to recall the details of his nighttime adventure. "It was...um, somewhere in the forest," he said slowly. "There were these bushes, with lots of blackberries. But I'm not really sure where it was exactly. Maybe Speedy would know. He was with me the whole time."
Eva nodded thoughtfully. "Blackberry bushes, you say? That might help. I wish you could remember more, but it's okay. Maybe Speedy can lead us back there if we need to check the area."
Jake nodded, feeling a bit relieved that his vague description seemed to be enough for now. As they continued walking, he couldn't help but think about the other parts of his adventure—the wild Pokémon that had attacked him and how Speedy had bravely defended him. But he kept those thoughts to himself. He didn't want his mom to worry more than she already was, and besides, he wanted her to see him as brave and capable.
"Mom doesn't need to know about the scary parts," he thought to himself, glancing up at Eva, who was walking beside him with a concerned expression. "I handled it. And Speedy was there. We were fine."
Eva noticed his silence and squeezed his hand gently. "You're very brave, Jake," she said, as if reading his thoughts. "But next time, remember what we talked about. I want you to come to me first, okay?"
Jake nodded earnestly. "I will, Mom. I promise."
With that, they continued their walk in companionable silence, the morning sun warming their backs as they made their way to the Pokémon Center to meet Rachel.
When Jake and Eva arrived at the Pokémon Center, the automatic doors slid open with a soft whoosh, revealing the bustling yet orderly environment within. The interior was bright and welcoming, with the soft hum of healing machines and the gentle murmur of trainers discussing their Pokémon's care. Amidst it all, Rachel was easy to spot, her presence like a beacon of energy and warmth in the otherwise clinical setting.
Rachel was a woman in her early thirties, with an easy smile that could light up a room and eyes that sparkled with a mix of mischief and kindness. Her dark hair was pulled back into a practical ponytail, though a few strands had escaped, framing her face and giving her a slightly windswept look. She was dressed in the standard uniform of the Pokémon Center staff, but she had added her own flair—brightly colored pins of various Pokémon adorned her collar, and her sneakers were a vibrant shade of red that clashed playfully with the otherwise subdued outfit.
Despite the cheerful exterior, Rachel was a force to be reckoned with. She had a reputation for being both caring and sassy, the kind of person who could make you laugh even as she was stitching up a nasty wound or delivering a dose of tough love. She was practical to a fault, with no patience for nonsense, especially when it came to the well-being of her patients. Where Eva's work in the lab involved meticulous research and sitting behind a computer assessing Pokémon for young trainers, Rachel's daily life was hands-on and often unpredictable. Injured Pokémon didn't follow schedules, and Rachel had learned to adapt quickly, making decisions on the fly and always keeping her cool under pressure.
As Jake and Eva approached, Rachel was in the middle of a conversation with a young trainer, reassuring him about his slightly banged-up Pidgeotto. She glanced up as they entered, and a broad grin spread across her face.
"Well, if it isn't my favorite nephew and his lovely mom," Rachel called out, her voice warm and teasing as she waved them over. She finished giving instructions to the trainer, her tone shifting seamlessly from lighthearted to serious as she ensured they understood the care his Pokémon needed.
"Now, make sure you keep an eye on those wing feathers," she added with a wink before turning her full attention to Eva and Jake. "So, what brings you two troublemakers here so early in the morning?"
As soon as Jake spotted Rachel, his face lit up with excitement. He dashed forward, his small legs carrying him as quickly as they could. "Aunt Rachel!" he called out, practically launching himself at her with a wide grin.
Rachel bent down just in time to catch him in a big hug, laughing as she did. "Hey there, champ!" she said, ruffling his hair affectionately. "Missed me already, huh? You're getting stronger every day—I almost couldn't catch you!"
Jake giggled, squeezing her tightly. "I missed you so much! You're the best aunt ever!"
Rachel chuckled, giving him a playful squeeze back. "Well, you're the best nephew ever, so I guess we're even."
Eva approached them more slowly, but with a warm smile on her face. "Morning, Rach," she said, reaching out to give her sister-in-law a hug once Jake finally let go. "I can't thank you enough for yesterday. You really saved us."
Rachel waved her hand dismissively, though the smile never left her face. "Oh, please, it was nothing. Just doing what I always do—keeping you guys out of trouble," she teased, her tone light but affectionate.
Eva shook her head, her expression sincere. "No, really, Rachel. You were amazing. I don't know what we would've done without you."
Rachel's eyes softened as she looked at Eva. "You don't have to worry about that. Family takes care of each other, right? Besides, it was kind of fun—I never know what kind of adventure you two are going to drag me into next." She winked at Jake, who beamed up at her with admiration.
"Did you really think it was fun?" Jake asked eagerly, his eyes wide.
Rachel grinned. "Of course I did! But I think you've had enough excitement for a while, don't you?" She looked at him pointedly, and Jake nodded sheepishly.
"Yeah... maybe just a little," he admitted, scratching the back of his head.
Rachel laughed again, giving him a light tap on the nose. "That's what I thought. Now, how about you tell me what brings you here today? Something tells me this isn't just a social visit."
Eva took a deep breath, ready to explain their visit. "Actually, Rachel, we came to you with a bit of a request," she began, her tone taking on a more serious note.
Rachel raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Oh? And what can I do for you, friend-o?"
Eva gave a small, nervous smile. "Well, we came across a lone egg this morning," she said, carefully omitting any mention of Jake's nighttime adventure. "I was hoping you could help us check its health status and maybe figure out what kind of creature might be inside."
Rachel's eyes widened slightly, and she nodded, her expression shifting to one of professional curiosity. "An egg, huh? Sounds interesting. Of course, I'd be happy to help. We'll give it a thorough examination and see what we can find out."
Eva sighed in relief. "Thank you, Rach. I knew we could count on you."
Rachel's demeanor softened into a reassuring smile. "No problem at all. Let's get that egg into the lab and see what's going on with it."
Rachel carefully placed the egg into a sleek, futuristic screening device, her movements precise and practiced. She adjusted a few settings on the machine, her eyes focused on the adjacent computer screen. "Alright, you lot. Let's get started," she said, her voice both calm and reassuring.
Eva and Jake watched intently as the machine began its process. The device hummed softly, and the screen lit up with various readouts. "First, we're measuring the egg's pulse," Rachel explained, her fingers deftly navigating the controls. "And it seems to be just fine. The pulse is steady and strong."
Jake, eyes wide with fascination, glanced from the screen to Rachel. "What does that mean?"
Rachel looked at Jake with a friendly smile. "It means the egg is alive and the heartbeat is regular. It's a good sign."
The machine emitted a soft beep, and Rachel continued. "Now we're measuring its body temperature. Let's see..."
She frowned slightly as the screen displayed the results. "It looks a little hypothermic," she said, her brow furrowing as she examined the readings.
Jake's face scrunched up in confusion. "Hypo-what?"
Rachel chuckled softly, trying to simplify the term. "Hypothermic means that the egg is a bit too cold. It's not at the right temperature for it to develop properly."
Jake's eyes widened as he processed this information. "So that's why it felt so cold when I found it," he said, his relief palpable. "I'm really glad I didn't leave it out there. I thought something might be wrong with it."
Rachel gave Jake a reassuring smile. "You did the right thing by bringing it inside and keeping it warm, little guy. It's important for eggs to be at the right temperature so that the baby Pokemon inside can develop safely."
Jake nodded, his expression one of pride mixed with relief. "Thanks, auntie. I'm glad I did the right thing."
Rachel patted him on the shoulder. "That you definitely did, champ! Now, let's make sure we get the egg warmed up and properly cared for. We don't want it to be too cold for too long."
Eva watched the exchange with a mix of relief and gratitude, appreciating Rachel's expert care and Jake's earnest concern for the egg. "Thank you so much, Rachel. I really appreciate you helping us out with this."
Rachel winked and gave a playful salute. "Anytime, sis! Now let's get this egg warmed up and see if we can figure out what's inside."
"And now, we're screening the baby," Rachel continued, her eyes fixed on the monitor. The machine's whirring was a steady background noise as it compared the creature inside to the templates stored in its library. "Let's see what we can find."
After a moment, Rachel's face lit up with a smile. "So, it looks like we have a Cubone here. Well, about 85 percent sure."
Jake's eyes widened with curiosity. "What's 'percent'?"
Both Rachel and Eva exchanged a glance, and Eva started explaining. "Percent is a way to show how likely something is. So, 85 percent means it's quite likely that the baby is a Cubone, but it's not absolutely certain."
Rachel nodded in agreement. "Exactly. It's a high chance, but there's still a little bit of uncertainty."
Jake furrowed his brow, clearly struggling to grasp the concept.
"And what does the number mean?"
After a few more minutes of trying to explain, Rachel and Eva realized it was too complicated for the young child to fully understand.
"It's okay, Jakey," Rachel said with a grin. "What's important is that we have a good idea of what the baby might be. We'll keep an eye on it and make sure it gets the care it needs."
Eva nodded, wrapping an arm around Jake's shoulders. "Yes, and the main thing is that we've done everything we can to help the egg. Thank you, Rach, for all your help."
Rachel waved off the thanks with a grin. "No problem at all. It's always a pleasure to help out. Now let's get this little one warmed up and settled in."
As Rachel began preparing the necessary adjustments for the egg's care, Jake felt a sense of accomplishment, even if he didn't fully understand the details. The reassurance from Rachel and his mom made him feel proud of his role in the adventure.
"Sorry, gang, I have to go," Rachel said, her tone apologetic as a loud ringing noise filled the room. It was the alert that someone had arrived at the desk with an injured Pokémon, needing immediate attention.
"Jakey, do you want to help me?" Rachel asked, her smile broadening as she looked at her nephew. She could use a hand carrying Poké Balls from place to place. With no Chansey around to assist, Jake's help would be invaluable. Jake loved these moments, where he could be part of the action, even if it was just running errands. He'd eagerly watch as his aunt treated Pokémon, fascinated by the process.
Jake's eyes lit up with excitement at the prospect of helping.
"Yes! Mom, can I help Auntie?" Jake asked and turned to his mother, his voice bubbling with enthusiasm.
Eva hesitated for a moment, glancing at Rachel. "You don't mind, Rach?"
Rachel shook her head with a grin. "Not at all! It's actually great timing. I could use an extra pair of hands, and our little Lindenberg has always been so helpful."
"Okay, thank you. Give me a call when you're done, and I'll come pick him up," Eva agreed, giving Rachel a grateful nod.
"Will do," Rachel replied. "Take care, Eva!"
Eva gave Jake a reassuring hug and said goodbye. "Be good and listen to your Auntie, okay?"
Jake nodded vigorously, already bouncing with excitement. He followed Rachel to the reception area, where a trainer was pacing impatiently. The trainer, a young woman with a worried expression, held a Poké Ball in her hand. Beside her was a small, injured Pokémon—a Pichu with a singed ear and a visibly distressed look.
Rachel greeted the trainer with a warm, professional smile. "Hi there! What's the situation? Battling the Elite Four?"
The trainer hurriedly explained, "My Pichu got caught in an Ember attack during a battle. I'm so worried. Can you help?"
Rachel's expression softened with sympathy. "Of course. We'll take good care of it. Jakey, why don't you help by bringing these Poké Balls over to the treatment area?"
Jake nodded, his excitement palpable. He carefully carried the Poké Balls to the back room, eager to assist in any way he could. Meanwhile, Rachel began assessing Pichu, her experienced hands moving with practiced efficiency.
Eva left the Pokémon Center, her heart lighter knowing Jake would be in good hands. She glanced back one last time before heading to her next destination, feeling a mix of relief and contentment that her son was happy and safe.
Eva arrived at an open space between several large barns, their wooden doors wide open to reveal the bustle of morning activity. Inside, she could see people busy at work: feeding Pokémon, brushing their wool, and cleaning hooves. The rhythmic clatter of brushes and the cheerful clucking of Pokémon being tended to filled the air.
In front of the barn where the Sneasel had been kept, a crowd had gathered. Among them were three foremen, each distinct in their role and demeanor.
Jerry, a burly man with a grizzled beard and a deep voice, stood near the front. He had joined the ranch a few years ago after leaving a career in construction. Drawn to the peaceful life and the opportunity to work with Pokémon, Jerry had quickly adapted to the ranch's demands. His practical skills and strong work ethic made him a natural fit for overseeing the daily operations and handling more intensive tasks.
Angie, a redhead woman in her early forties with a sharp gaze and a confident stride, was engaged in a heated discussion with Jerry. She had started at the ranch as a regular Pokémon caretaker with focus on poison types, but her exceptional talent with Pokémon and her impressive skills as a trainer had propelled her to the role of foreman (or forewoman?). Her ability to read Pokémon's needs and her dedication to their well-being had earned her the respect of her peers.
Petr, Eva's father, was an elderly man with a kindly face and a wealth of experience. Having spent his entire career with the Lindenberg family, he had begun as a driver, transporting goods from the ranch to the nearby town, Iglaustadt. As his children, Frank and Eva, were born, Petr had requested a transfer to stay closer to home. He had initially taken up a repairman role but quickly demonstrated his capability and leadership. Now nearing retirement, Petr enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge with the next generation of ranch workers and looked forward to traveling with his wife in their golden years.
As Eva approached, the trio's conversation ceased, and they turned their attention to her. The atmosphere was tense, with concerns about the missing Sneasel clearly weighing on everyone's minds.
"Eva!" Angie called out, her expression a mix of relief and concern. "You're here. We've been trying to figure out where the Sneasel went. Do you have any news?"
Eva took a deep breath, bracing herself for the conversation. "Actually, I do," she said, her voice steady. "Jakub was the one who set it free."
The revelation caused a stir among the group. Jerry's eyes widened with surprise, while Petr's face grew stern with concern. Angie's brow furrowed as she processed the information.
"Jake did what?" Jerry asked, his tone a blend of shock and disbelief. "Why on earth would he let it go?"
"It was a mistake," Eva explained. "He was trying to help the Sneasel. It was a complicated situation, and I'm sorry for the trouble it's caused."
Petr sighed, running a hand through his thinning hair. "I understand wanting to help, but we need to ensure that this doesn't happen again. Sneasel can be dangerous, and we can't have our Pokémon running wild."
Angie nodded in agreement. "We'll have to make sure all our Pokémon are secure and that everyone knows the protocols for handling these situations."
Eva nodded, relieved that the conversation was moving towards a resolution. "I appreciate your understanding. I'll make sure Jake learns from this experience."
The group began to discuss other issues, their focus shifting back to the day's tasks. Eva took a moment to catch her breath, feeling a mix of relief and tension. She knew that while this situation was far from ideal, it was an opportunity for growth and learning for everyone involved.
As she prepared to leave, she caught Petr's eye. "Thanks for handling everything, Dad," she said softly. "I know it's a lot of responsibility."
Petr smiled warmly, his eyes twinkling with a mix of pride and affection. "It's all part of the job, Eva. Just make sure you take care of that boy of ours."
"Dad," Eva continued, her tone a mixture of urgency and affection, "I'm going to be tied up with new trainers this afternoon. I've got a lot to get through, and I'm worried about Jakey. He's been quite shaken up from this morning, and I don't want him left alone."
Petr, who was now readying himself for his next task, looked up with a thoughtful expression. "I understand, Eva. It's important to keep an eye on him after all that's happened. But as it happens, I'll be out retrieving some Pokémon for trainers this afternoon. It's part of my usual rounds."
Eva's face brightened slightly at the news. "That's perfect! Do you think you could bring Jakey along with you? You know how much he loves the Pokémon we're handling."
Petr chuckled, nodding his agreement. "I think he'd enjoy that a lot. It'll be good for him to focus on something else after yesterday. Besides, he'll be with me, so I'll keep an eye on him.
"I'm sure he'll have a great time. He's always so curious about how everything works around here. And it'll give him a break from the house."
Eva sighed with relief. "Thank you, Dad. I really appreciate it. I hope he will behave. Just, please, keep him out of trouble."
Petr gave her a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, Eva. I'll take good care of him. And I'll make sure he gets a proper lunch before we head out. We'll be back by late afternoon, so you can focus on your work without worrying."
"Thanks, Dad," Eva said, giving him a grateful hug. "I owe you one. I'll catch up with you later."
Petr waved her off as she turned to leave. "Anytime, Eva. You just do what you need to do. I'll handle Jakey and the Pokémon."
As Eva walked away, she felt a wave of relief wash over her. Knowing that Jake would be in good hands allowed her to focus on the demanding tasks ahead. She glanced back briefly, seeing her father preparing for his rounds, and felt a renewed sense of gratitude for the support of her family.
Meanwhile her father, Petr, headed to his task. He needed to check the whole outer areas to be sure some wild Pokemon were not doing mischief or that there were no serious fights between Pokémon.
The whole ranch sprawled across an immense expanse of land, meticulously designed to cater to the diverse needs of Pokémon. Each section was tailored to accommodate the unique habitats and preferences of different Pokémon species, ensuring a harmonious environment for all.
Grasslands: The ranch featured extensive fields of lush, green grass, ideal for Pokémon that thrived in open, expansive areas. Here, you could find Pokémon like Snorlax, Tauros, and Sunflora roaming freely, grazing, running, and resting. These fields were dotted with wildflowers and small ponds, providing ample resources and comfort for Pokémon that preferred wide, open spaces.
Lakes and Aquatic Areas: Several serene lakes were spread across the ranch, offering perfect habitats for Water-type Pokémon. Most of these lakes contained fresh water, but two were specially adjusted with salt water to cater to Pokémon accustomed to ocean environments, such as Tentacruel and Seaking. The lakes were surrounded by reeds and small islands, creating a rich and varied aquatic ecosystem.
Wastewater Treatment Plant: Adjacent to the town, the wastewater treatment plant was an essential area for Poison-type Pokémon. The plant was attracting Pokémon like Grimer and Muk, who thrived in the unique conditions of a wastewater environment. The area was equipped with filtration systems and containment tanks, allowing the Poison-types to flourish.
Forests: A deep, dense forest formed a significant portion of the ranch's land, providing a natural habitat for Bug-type Pokémon. The forest was alive with the sounds of Pokémon like Butterfree and Beedrill, who thrived in the shaded, humid environment. Tall trees and thick underbrush created a maze-like environment, perfect for these insectoid creatures to build their nests and explore.
Hills and Rocky Terrain: Several hills, each with its own unique features, were spread across the ranch. One hill was stark and barren, with exposed rocks and stones, providing an ideal environment for Rock-type Pokémon like Geodude and Onix. Another hill, heavily populated with Steel-types such as Magnemite and Steelix, had rich deposits of metal ores, thanks to the Pokémon's mining activities.
Ghost Shack: In the middle of the forest stood an old, abandoned shack, now a home to Ghost-type Pokémon. The eerie and mysterious atmosphere of the shack provided a perfect refuge for Pokémon like Mismagius and Gengar.
Caves: Deep within the ranch's terrain were several caves, each suited to different types of Pokémon:
Ground-type Caves: These were the most common, providing a safe haven for Pokémon like Diglett and Sandshrew. The caves were lined with earthy materials and were cool and dry, ideal for Ground-types.
Fire-type Cave: One of the caves was inhabited by Fire-type Pokémon like Torkoal or Quilava, who had lived there for decades. The constant activity of these Pokémon had resulted in a small lava lake within the cave, creating a naturally heated and fiery environment.
Ice-type Cave: Another cave was the home of Ice-type Pokémon. The constant presence of Pokémon like Glaceon, Snorunt or Bergmite had transformed the cave into a frigid, icy field, complete with glistening ice formations and freezing temperatures.
Power Plant: The power plant, which also served as the ranch's main electricity source, was a bustling hub for Electric-type Pokémon. Pokémon like Pikachu and Jolteon thrived in the high-energy environment, surrounded by machinery and power lines that generated a constant electrical charge.
Petr, as he traversed these diverse areas, kept a watchful eye on the interactions between the Pokémon and their environments. His daily rounds ensured that everything was in order, and that no significant conflicts or issues arose between the various Pokémon species.
By the time Petr had finished his rounds inspecting the various areas of the ranch, it was nearly noon. The inspection had taken longer than anticipated, as ensuring that each habitat was in optimal condition required meticulous attention. Satisfied with his work, Petr headed back to the Pokémon centre to pick up Jake.
"Ready to go, Jakey?" Petr called out, his voice carrying a warm, fatherly tone. Jake, who had been eagerly waiting in the foyer, bounced up with excitement.
"Yes, Grandpa! What are we doing today?" Jake asked, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Petr and Jake first made their way to a cozy local diner, where they enjoyed a hearty lunch. The meal was a welcomed break from their busy day. After eating, they set out again, this time on a mission to address a series of Pokémon exchange requests from various trainers.
As they arrived at the Pokémon Center, Petr was greeted by a flurry of activity. Trainers from all around had brought their Pokémon for exchanges, and each request came with its own set of challenges. Many of the Pokémon were not content to remain close to the ranch, preferring the wide-open spaces that they were used to. This created a bit of a predicament for Petr, who needed to retrieve these Pokémon to complete the exchanges.
"Alright, Jake," Petr said as they approached the field, "we have our work cut out for us. We've got to find and recall over twenty different Pokémon that have wandered outside the ranch."
Jake's eyes widened at the sheer number. "Wow, Grandpa, that sounds like a lot of work!"
"It is, but we've got some help," Petr said with a reassuring smile. He then called out his trusted Wyrdeer. The majestic Pokémon appeared, its antlers glowing with psychic energy.

"Wyrdeer, we need your help today," Petr instructed. "We have to locate and recall a number of Pokémon that are out in the fields."
Wyrdeer nodded, its eyes gleaming with determination. With a gentle nod from Petr, the Wyrdeer began to use its psychic abilities to scan the surrounding area. The energy from its antlers created a faint glow that helped to locate the stray Pokémon. Petr and Jake, with the help of Wyrdeer, moved from one location to another.
Petr's Wyrdeer, named Rudolf, was an older Pokémon, having seen many seasons on the ranch. Though he didn't enjoy the rigors of regular training and remained at a modest level 38, Rudolf was a rare and valuable asset due to his exceptional psychic abilities.
When Petr needed Rudolf's help, he would first take out a trainer's Pokéball with the Pokémon being outside of it and let Rudolf sniff it. The moment Rudolf's nose touched the Pokéball, he would close his eyes and concentrate, using his psychic abilities to sense the location of the Pokémon he was tasked with finding. It was almost as if Rudolf had a built-in radar for detecting the presence of other Pokémon.
With a soft, reassuring grunt, Rudolf indicated that he had pinpointed the location of the target Pokémon. Without hesitation, Rudolf began to move, his powerful legs carrying him swiftly over the terrain. Petr followed closely behind, driving his trusty jeep, which was equipped for rugged terrain and often used for traversing the extensive ranch land.
The jeep bumped along the dirt paths and grassy fields as Rudolf led the way, his psychic powers guiding him like an invisible compass. Jake admired the efficiency with which Rudolf worked. The old Pokémon might not have been the most powerful in terms of raw strength, but his ability to locate Pokémon with such precision was a testament to his valuable role on the ranch.
"What are we looking for?" Jake asked, peering out of the jeep's window as the landscape passed by.
"We're looking for a Lombre," Petr replied, his hands firmly gripping the steering wheel. "Do you know the Lotad lake?"
Jake nodded eagerly. "Yeah, I've seen it. It's the one with the lily pads and the Lotads swimming around."
"That's right," Petr confirmed. "Lombre is the evolved form of Lotad, so we need to head to that lake."
As the jeep rumbled along, the terrain began to change. The grassy fields gave way to a lush area dotted with two large lakes. One lake was particularly striking, with its surface almost entirely covered by water lilies. However, upon closer inspection, many of these "lilies" were actually Lotads, camouflaging themselves among the floating plants.
Petr brought the jeep to a stop at the edge of the lake, where Rudolf the Wyrdeer sniffed the air and scanned the surroundings with his psychic powers. His eyes narrowed in concentration, and soon he indicated the direction they needed to go.
"There," Petr said, pointing towards a cluster of Lotads, "Rudolf's marked the spot where the Lombre should be."
Jake watched in fascination as Petr stepped out of the jeep and approached the water's edge. The Lombre was known for its laid-back nature, often lounging among the Lotads and blending in with its surroundings. The Pokémon enjoyed the lake's calm environment, making it an ideal place for Petr to find it.
The lake was peaceful, with only the occasional ripple disturbing the surface. As Petr carefully scanned the area, he spotted the familiar shape of Lombre partially hidden among the Lotads. Its green body and the distinctive lily pad on its back made it stand out, even in its relaxed state.
Petr pulled out a Pokéball, aiming it carefully at the Lombre. "Return," he called out, releasing a red beam of light that enveloped the Lombre. The Pokémon was drawn into the Pokéball with a soft pop, disappearing into its confines.
The Pokéball wobbled briefly before the light faded, signaling a successful capture. Petr picked it up and held it up for Jake to see.
"There we go, Jake. That's one Lombre safely back with us."
Jake clapped his hands excitedly. "Wow! That was so cool! What's next?"
"Now we need to find sixteen more," Petr said, glancing at the Pokéballs stacked on the seat beside him. "Let's ask Rudolf for another one."
"Can I choose?" Jake asked eagerly, his eyes sparkling with excitement. Petr gave a nod of approval.
"Rudolf?" Jake called out, turning to the Wyrdeer who had been munching on the grass by the lake.
Wyrdeer, with its majestic antlers and calm demeanor, lifted its head and gazed at Jake and Petr. After a moment, it lumbered over to them, its hooves making soft thuds on the ground.
"Rudolf, can you find this Pokémon?" Jake asked, holding out an empty Pokéball. Rudolf sniffed the Pokéball curiously, his nose twitching as he detected its scent. After a brief moment, his eyes glowed faintly, signaling that he had located the Pokémon they were searching for. With a determined snort, he turned and began to trot toward the hills.
"Hold on," Petr warned Jake as he started the jeep. They followed Rudolf, weaving through the grassy terrain and heading towards the rolling hills in the distance. The jeep rattled slightly as they traveled, but Jake was too excited to mind.
Upon reaching the base of the hills, Rudolf continued his path up the slopes, his powerful legs carrying him with ease. The jeep followed at a slower pace, bumping along the uneven ground until they reached a flat plateau at the top.
"What Pokémon are we looking for?" Jake asked, peering out of the jeep window with curiosity.
"Wait and see," Petr replied with a knowing wink. The jeep crept along as Rudolf made his way to the edge of the plateau, where several bushes grew in clumps. The Wyrdeer paused, sniffed around, and then nudged the bushes with his antlers.
Suddenly, a large Crustle emerged from the foliage, its rocky shell and pincers gleaming in the sunlight. It clicked its claws irritably, clearly annoyed by Rudolf's intrusion. The Crustle's claws began to glow with a bug-type energy, signaling its readiness to fight.
"What is that?" Jake exclaimed, his eyes widening in surprise at the sight of the formidable Pokémon.
"Quick, Jakey! Recall it!" Petr shouted, urgently handing Jake the Pokéball designated for Crustle. The boy grabbed it, aim it towards the Crustle and clicked it. The red laser hit the Pokémon and, in a flash of red light, Crustle was pulled inside and the ball clicked shut.
"That was a close one," Petr breathed out, clearly relieved as he watched the Pokéball settle. "Crustle was about to use a bug-type move, and Wyrdeer is weak against bug types."
"Why is that a problem?" Jake asked, his curiosity piqued.
"Well," Petr explained, "bug-type moves are strong against Pokémon like Wyrdeer. On the flip side, Pokémon that are fire, rock, or flying types are strong against bug types. That's why it's important to be cautious."
Jake nodded thoughtfully, absorbing the information. "I see. So, what's next on our list?"
Petr smiled and started the jeep again. "Let's head to the next location. We've got more Pokémon to find and retrieve. And with Rudolf's help, we'll get through them in no time."
With the Crustle successfully retrieved, Petr and Jake set their sights on the next destination. Petr directed the jeep towards a hill known for its steel-type Pokémon. The terrain was rocky and barren, a stark contrast to the grassy fields they had traversed earlier. This hill was favored by steel-type Pokémon, who thrived in the rugged environment.
As they approached, Wyrdeer slowed down and began to scan the area with its keen psychic senses. The sun was high in the sky, casting long shadows over the rocky terrain. The jeep rattled as it navigated over the uneven ground, finally coming to a stop near a cluster of metallic boulders and scrap piles where steel-types were often found.
"Alright, Jake," Petr said, "we're looking for Togedemaru and Lairon. Togedemaru should be around here somewhere. It usually hangs out with the other Pokémon in this area."
Jake nodded and looked around eagerly. Wyrdeer stepped forward, its eyes glowing briefly as it picked up the scent of the Pokémon they were searching for. It soon led them to a small clearing where Togedemaru was resting, surrounded by a few metallic objects that it used as makeshift toys.
"Look, there's Togedemaru," Jake pointed out, spotting the small, round Pokémon with its distinctive spiky body and electric type markings.
The Togedemaru, seemingly enthusiastic to meet its trainer, let Jake recall it into its Pokéball without any fuss. The ball clicked shut with a satisfying sound, and Petr nodded in approval.
"Good job, Rudolf," Petr praised his Pokémon patting its side. "Now, let's find Lairon."
The search for Lairon led them further up the hill, where the rocky landscape became more rugged. Lairon, a large steel and rock-type Pokémon, was known for its strength and imposing presence. As they approached a particularly steep outcrop, Wyrdeer's psychic abilities detected the presence of Lairon.
Suddenly, the ground shook as Lairon appeared from behind a boulder, its metallic hide glinting ominously in the sunlight. Without warning, Lairon launched a powerful Flash Cannon attack, sending a searing beam of light and energy towards Wyrdeer.
"Watch out!" Petr shouted, but Wyrdeer was already prepared. The Wyrdeer concentrated, its eyes glowing brightly as it unleashed a counterattack. The ground trembled as Wyrdeer used Earth Power, causing a powerful shockwave to surge through the rocky terrain.
The super-effective Earth Power move struck Lairon directly, causing it to stagger and pant heavily. The attack took a considerable toll on Lairon, leaving it visibly exhausted and vulnerable. Seeing the opportunity, Petr quickly aimed the Pokéball at the weary Pokémon.
"Return, Lairon!" he commanded, and with a precise aim, the Pokéball enveloped Lairon in a flash of red light. The ball rocked a few times before clicking shut, signifying a successful recall.
"That was quite a surprise," Petr said, wiping sweat from his brow. "Lairon's Flash Cannon was powerful, but Wyrdeer's Earth Power did the trick. Steel-types can be tough to handle, but we managed just fine."
Jake, wide-eyed and impressed by the display of Pokémon battling, nodded enthusiastically. "That was amazing! What's next?"
Petr smiled at his grandson's excitement. "We've got more Pokémon to find, so let's keep going. Rudolf, lead the way!"
With the retrieval of Togedemaru and Lairon complete, Petr and Jake continued their search.
After successfully retrieving Togedemaru and Lairon, Petr and Jake drove towards their next destination: the area surrounding the wastewater treatment plant. This part of the ranch was notorious for its pungent smell, a necessary byproduct of accommodating poison-type Pokémon who thrived in such environments.
The treatment plant loomed in the distance, a large facility surrounded by tanks and pipes. The air was thick with the odor of chemicals and waste, a scent that made Jake wrinkle his nose in disgust. The ground was damp and mucky, with dark puddles of contaminated water dotting the landscape.
As they arrived, Wyrdeer's nostrils flared in response to the overpowering stench as well, but it continued its task with determination. Petr had informed Jake that they were looking for three specific poison-type Pokémon: Weezing, Grimer, and Gulpin.
"Alright, Jake," Petr said, "let's see if we can find Weezing first. It tends to hang around the larger tanks."
Wyrdeer led the way through the maze of pipes and tanks. The search was somewhat challenging due to the overwhelming smell and the cluttered environment, but Rudolf's psychic abilities helped pinpoint the exact location of the Pokémon.
They soon found Weezing, floating above a large tank. The twin spheres of the Weezing were covered in a thick layer of grime, and the Pokémon itself looked visibly agitated by their presence.
"Be careful," Petr warned, as Weezing started to puff out thick, toxic fumes in their direction. The fumes swirled around, making the air even more unbearable.
"Rudolf, use Confusion!" Petr commanded. Wyrdeer's eyes glowed with psychic energy as it projected a wave of mental force. The attack caused Weezing to stop its angry thrashing, momentarily disoriented and immobilized.
With the Weezing under control, Petr swiftly aimed the Pokéball and captured it without further trouble. The ball clicked shut, and Weezing was safely contained.
"Phew, that was a close one," Petr said, breathing a sigh of relief. "Weezing can be pretty irritable, especially in this stinky environment. Unfortunately, it could even use explosion and in place like this, it could be really dangerous."
Jake, who had been covering his nose with his sleeve, complained loudly, "This place really stinks! When are we leaving?"
Petr chuckled at Jake's reaction. "Hang in there, Jakey. We've still got Grimer and Gulpin to find."
The search continued through the murky surroundings. Soon, they spotted Grimer, its sludgy body blending with the waste-soaked ground. Grimer didn't put up any resistance, it looked like it was looking forward to returning to its trainer and Petr recalled it into its Pokéball with ease.
Next, they found Gulpin near a particularly foul-smelling sludge pool. The Gulpin, with its bulbous, green body, was happily slurping up the sludge without a care in the world. It was an easy task to recall it, as Gulpin was content and unbothered by their presence.
With all three poison-type Pokémon successfully captured, Petr turned to Jake with a grin. "Alright, Jakey, that's the last of the poison types. How about we get out of here and find somewhere a little less... fragrant?"
Jake eagerly nodded in agreement, still holding his nose. "Yeph, pwease!"
They left the wastewater plant behind, the unpleasant smell fading as they moved towards the next area on their list.
After leaving the wastewater plant, Petr and Jake continued their search, heading towards the fire cave. The entrance to the cave was marked by a plume of smoke and the warm, sulfurous air that greeted them as they arrived. Inside, the cave was dimly lit by the glow of small lava flows and volcanic rocks. The temperature inside was significantly higher than outside, making it feel like a different world entirely.
"Alright, Jakey," Petr said, "we're looking for a Torkoal here. It should be around the lava pools. Be careful and stay close to me."
Wyrdeer led the way, navigating through the uneven terrain. The heat radiating from the lava was intense, but Rudolf's psychic abilities made the search easier. They saw many fire-types lazing around and soon, they spotted Torkoal basking near a small lava flow, its shell emitting a faint, but noticeable, glow.
Petr aimed the Pokéball, and with a quick flick of his wrist, he recalled the Torkoal without any trouble. The Pokémon was content and didn't put up a fight, likely enjoying its time in the warm environment.
With Torkoal safely captured, Petr and Jake headed back to the jeep, ready to tackle their next destinations. They drove towards the expansive grassland, a vast area where the Pokémon were free to roam and graze.
Their first stop in the grassland was to retrieve Zangoose. Petr and Jake found it lounging under a tree, its sharp claws twitching as it noticed their approach. The retrieval went smoothly, as Zangoose didn't seem particularly eager to stay in the open field.
Next, they continued their search in the grassy expanse, locating Roserade, which was gracefully moving between the tall grass and flowers, and two Tauroses, who were grazing peacefully. The Tauroses were a bit more challenging to handle due to their size and strength, but with some careful maneuvering and patience, Petr and Jake managed to recall them one by one.
"Alright, we've got another area to cover," Petr said, as they headed towards the dense forest. The forest was filled with tall trees, and the air was cool and fresh, a stark contrast to the previous environments they had encountered.
In the forest, they first found Tangrowth, a large, vine-covered Pokémon that was tangled among the trees. Petr used a bit of strategy to avoid disturbing the delicate ecosystem of the forest while retrieving Tangrowth.
Next, they located Simisage, which was playfully swinging from branch to branch. The retrieval was straightforward, as Simisage seemed more interested in showing off its acrobatic skills than putting up a fight.
Lastly, they came across Sawbuck, a deer-like Pokémon with impressive antlers. Sawbuck initially appeared aloof and uncooperative, but as Rudolf approached, Sawbuck became intrigued. It started a friendly match with Wyrdeer, clashing its antlers with Rudolf's horns in a playful, yet competitive manner. The two Pokémon exchanged a few friendly headbutts and bouncy movements before Sawbuck bowed its head and allowed itself to be recalled.
Petr chuckled as he watched the interaction. "Looks like they had some fun before heading back," he said, smiling.
Jake, who had been watching the playful clash with wide-eyed fascination, grinned. "That was so cool! They looked like they were having a great time."
"Okay, just three more," said Petr, glancing at his phone.
"Where are we going now?" Jake asked eagerly.
"I believe we should head back to the house. There are two Electric-types and one Fairy-type. They're likely to be in the vicinity. But let's ask Rudolf first."
Jake held out the three Pokéballs to Wyrdeer. The Wyrdeer sniffed each ball in turn, then raised its head, signaling the direction they should head.
Following Rudolf's guidance, they drove back towards the ranch. They first arrived at the area near the power plant, a prime spot for Electric-types. Among the Electric-types lounging around were Mareep and Galvantula. Mareep, ever eager and aware of what was happening, greeted them with cheerful bleats and happily approached them. Galvantula, on the other hand, was sprawled lazily next to an electric pole, barely lifting a leg as Petr and Jake recalled it.
"These two were easy," Jake commented, relieved.
Next, they moved to a barn located near the main house, where they found the last Pokémon, an Impidimp. Wyrdeer led the way to a pile of hay in one corner of the barn, where the Impidimp was dozing peacefully. As they approached, the Impidimp stirred and, recognizing the process, allowed itself to be recalled without resistance.
"Alright, Rudolf, do you want to go back to your Pokéball, or do you prefer to stay outside?" Petr asked as they finished up the last of their search.
Wyrdeer, showing its preference for the open air, nodded towards the grassland, snorted and trotted off, eager to continue enjoying the freedom of the outdoors.
"Old boy's been running around with us all morning and still doesn't seem tired," Petr remarked with a chuckle, admiring the Wyrdeer's boundless energy.
With all the Pokémon collected, Petr and Jake made their way to the headquarters. There, the Pokémon would be checked, prepared and arranged for their respective trainers. The busy day was coming to a close, and Petr was content with a job well done.
Petr and Jake arrived at the Pokémon Center, where Rachel immediately started preparing the Pokéballs for their trainers. The center was bustling with activity, and the air was filled with the usual sounds of Pokémon and people alike. As they walked through the entrance, they were greeted by Frank, who had just returned from his own duties. His face lit up with a warm smile upon seeing his father, wife and nephew.
"Hey there!" Frank called out, walking over to them. "Looks like you've had quite the day. I've been out all day myself, trying to coordinate with other rangers. We've been trying to track down that Sneasel."
Rachel's eyes brightened with interest. "Any luck?"
Frank shook his head. "Not yet, but we're not giving up. It's a tough search."
As Petr bid his farewells and prepared to leave, Frank and Rachel decided to take Jake home. The three of them headed out together, walking through the sunny afternoon with lighthearted chatter. They joked and laughed, the atmosphere relaxed and pleasant.
As they strolled, Rachel's phone rang. She answered the call with a cheerful, "Hi Monika! How is my favourite girl doing? ... I know you're my only girl, but you can still be my favorite!" It was her daughter, Rachel's tone turning warm and affectionate as she spoke with her. During the call, Jake, feeling a mix of nerves and determination, decided it was the right moment to share something important.
He tugged gently on Frank's sleeve, catching his attention. "Uncle, I need to tell you something about the Sneasel."
Frank looked down at Jake with curiosity. "What's up, buddy?"
Jake took a deep breath, gathering his courage. "When I let the Sneasel go, I could feel its emotions and memories. I think it was lost from its tribe, and there might be more Sneasels around."
Frank's brows furrowed in thought. "How do you know that?"
Jake nodded, his voice steady despite his nervousness. "When I released it, I felt what it was feeling. It was really sad and scared. It must have been separated from its family."
Frank was visibly impressed. "That's quite perceptive of you, Jake. It sounds like you have a strong connection with Pokémon."
Rachel, finishing her call, joined the conversation. "What's this about more Sneasels?"
Jake explained his feelings once more, and both Frank and Rachel listened intently. Rachel placed a reassuring hand on Jake's shoulder. "Well, that's good to know. We'll make sure to keep an eye out for any more Sneasels and do our best to help them if we can."
As they continued their walk, the sense of camaraderie and family bond was evident. Frank and Rachel's reassurance made Jake feel more at ease, and the day's challenges seemed a bit lighter with their support.
As they arrived at Jake's house, Jake bounded towards the door, his face beaming with excitement. "Mom! Mom!" he called out, practically bouncing on his toes. "You won't believe all the Pokémon I saw today! I even helped Grandpa find them!"
Eva, standing by the front door, greeted her son with a warm smile and a firm hug. "I'm so glad to see you had such an adventure. It sounds like you had a fantastic day."
"Can I play with Maya?" Jake asked eagerly, referring to Eva's Decidueye. "I want to play hide-and-seek!"
Eva chuckled and glanced at her shadow. "Maya, would you like to play hide-and-seek with Jake?"
From the shadows, Maya emerged gracefully, her wings rustling as she hooted softly. Jake's eyes lit up as he saw Maya, and he immediately began the game by closing his eyes. Maya expertly blended into the shadows of the garden, making it challenging for Jake to find her, but he managed to spot her several times, his laughter echoing through the garden.
Meanwhile, Eva, Frank, and Rachel settled onto the patio with glasses of wine and relaxed into the comfortable chairs. Eva opened a bottle and poured wine for everyone. "So, what do you think we should do about the egg Jake found?" she asked as she took a sip.
Rachel, savoring her own glass, replied thoughtfully, "Well sugar, we should definitely keep the egg in the incubator at the Pokémon Center until it hatches. I'd be happy to take care of it there. It needs to be kept at a stable temperature to ensure it develops properly."
Frank added, "I have a feeling that the parents of the egg might come looking for it. They could be searching for it, and we should be prepared. What if a pair of Tyranitars come crashing down on the centre?"
Rachel shook her head gently. "I think it's more likely that the egg was abandoned. It was quite cold when Jake found it, which is usually a sign that it was left behind."
Eva's face reflected her concern. "I'm not sure what to do once it hatches. Maybe I can then assign it to some trainer. Or maybe some Pokemon in the ranch would volunteer to take care of it."
Rachel, looking sympathetic, suggested, "I think Jake would do really well raising the Pokémon. It would be a great opportunity for him."
Eva hesitated, clearly torn. "What? Jakey? I just don't know. He's so young!"
Frank shook his head. "Wait, sis. He's not so young. He's starting school in a few weeks. This would be great for him. I don't doubt he will want to be a Pokemon trainer. Or something similar. And if he gets opportunity to raise a Pokemon in this age, I'm sure it would mean a lot to him."
Eva sighed. "Are you both really sure he's ready for that kind of responsibility?"
This time Rachel replied. "Eva, he was helping me all morning. He is reliable, curious and wants to do the best job."
Frank nodded in agreement with Rachel. "He's shown he can handle more than we might think, especially with all of us around to support him."
Eva considered their words carefully. "Alright, if you both believe he's ready and it would be good for him, then I'll think about it."
The three adults clinked their glasses together, settling into a relaxed discussion about other aspects of their day and their plans for the coming week. Meanwhile, Jake's joyous laughter continued to fill the garden as he chased Maya around, his playful shouts a reminder of the simple pleasures of childhood.
