Pokémon: The Battle Ranch Chronicles

Chapter 2: Chapter 02: The Attack

The sun continued its ascent, bathing the sprawling Lindenberg ranch in a warm, golden light. Eva, the tall blond woman, walked hand in hand with her son, Jake, as they explored the fields. The soft breeze carried the familiar scents of the ranch—fresh grass, wildflowers, and the earthy smell of Pokémon that roamed freely across the land.

"Mom, what's that Pokémon over there?" Jake pointed excitedly toward a group of Pokémon grazing near a small pond. The Sawsbuck, their antlers adorned with lush summer leaves, were peacefully drinking from the water.

"Are they psychic like Grandpa's Wyrdeer?" Jake asked, recalling the majestic Pokémon his grandfather often trained with.

Eva smiled and shook her head. "No, Jake, these are Sawsbuck. They're Normal and Grass-type Pokémon. See how their antlers change with the seasons? In winter, they'll have snow-covered antlers. They're very different from Wyrdeer, which is Normal and Psychic-type."

Jake nodded thoughtfully. "So they don't use psychic powers like Wyrdeer does?"

"That's right," Eva confirmed. "But they have their own strengths. Sawsbuck are very in tune with nature, and they help keep the environment balanced by spreading seeds and helping plants grow."

They continued their walk, with Jake eagerly pointing out other Pokémon that caught his attention. As they passed under a large oak tree, a flock of small, blue-feathered birds soared above them, chirping happily as they flew.

"Look, Mom! Are those Pidgey?" Jake asked, watching the birds with fascination.

Eva smiled and shook her head. "Not quite, Jake. Those are Taillow. They're Normal and Flying-type Pokémon. Taillow are known for their courage—they'll stand up to much larger opponents if they need to. See how fast they are? They're excellent at flying long distances, too."

"Wow, so they're really brave?" Jake's eyes lit up with interest as he followed the Taillow with his gaze.

"Yes, they are," Eva confirmed. "They might be small, but they have a lot of heart. They're a little different from Pidgey, who are more common in other regions. Taillow are more at home here in these fields."

"When I'm older, I'm going to catch one," Jake declared confidently.

Eva chuckled softly. "I'm sure you will, Jake. And I'm sure your Taillow will be just as brave as you are."

They walked a bit further, and Jake spotted a cluster of Joltik scurrying up a tree, their tiny yellow bodies barely visible against the bark. "Look, Mom! Those little ones are so fast! What are they?"

"Those are Joltik," Eva answered, watching the Electric-type Pokémon zip around. "They're Bug and Electric-type. They might be small, but they can generate a lot of electricity. Joltik usually attach themselves to larger Pokémon to absorb static electricity, which they use for energy. And you know Tobias used to be a Joltik, before he evolved?"

"Really? But he's much bigger than these little guys!" Jake's eyes widened as he recalled his mother's Galvantula.

"That's because of evolution. Some Pokémon really grow." Eva explained.

Jake leaned in closer, watching the Joltik with wide eyes. "They're so cute! Can I pet them?"

Eva hesitated for a moment, knowing how small and delicate the Joltik were. "I know they look cute, Jake, but it's best not to pet them. Joltik can give a small shock if they're scared, and we don't want to surprise them. But you know," she continued, reaching into her bag, "I have some Pokémon food with me. How about we offer them a few cubes?"

Jake's eyes lit up with excitement as Eva handed him a few small cubes of Pokémon food. Together, they gently placed the cubes near the base of the tree where the Joltik were scurrying. The tiny Pokémon quickly noticed the food, and a few of them cautiously approached, their curiosity piqued.

Eva watched the Joltik with fascination, a smile playing on her lips. "You know, Jake, I work in a laboratory that studies Bug-type Pokémon like these Joltik. They're really interesting creatures, and we've been researching how their electricity can be used in medicine."

As the Joltik nibbled on the food, Eva nodded toward them. "Now that they're content, you can try asking one if you can pet it."

Jake's face lit up with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. He crouched down near one of the Joltik that seemed particularly interested in the food. "Um, Joltik, can I pet you?"

The Joltik, now content with the free meal, glanced up at Jake with its tiny eyes and gave a small, approving buzz. Jake reached out carefully, his fingers brushing against the Joltik's soft, fuzzy body. The Pokémon remained still, allowing Jake to pet it gently.

"Wow, it feels so soft!" Jake whispered, his eyes wide with wonder.

Eva watched her son with a warm smile, her heart swelling with pride. Moments like this reminded her of why she loved both her work and her family. She might not have advanced as quickly in her academic career as her friend Aurea Juniper, but standing here with Jake, sharing these experiences with him, she wouldn't trade this life for anything.

Feeling a surge of affection for both her son and the Joltik, Eva crouched down beside Jake and reached out to pet another Joltik that was finishing its meal. The tiny Pokémon buzzed contentedly as Eva's fingers brushed its soft body, and she couldn't help but feel a deep sense of connection to these remarkable creatures she studied. This encounter reminded Eva of her own Pokémon, Tobias the Galvantula.

"You're right, Jake," Eva said softly, her gaze fixed on the Joltik. "They are really cute. And incredibly fascinating. I'm glad we could meet them."

As they continued their walk, Eva couldn't shake a lingering sense of unease, though. Something about the rustling in the nearby tall grass felt off, and she instinctively placed a protective hand on Jake's shoulder.

"Stay close, Jake," she said softly, her eyes narrowing slightly as she tried to identify the source of the movement. "Sometimes wild Pokémon hide in the grass, and we don't want to startle them."

Jake nodded, his excitement momentarily subdued by his mother's caution. He stayed close by her side, his eyes darting around as he tried to spot the hidden Pokémon.

But before they could take another step, the rustling grew louder, and the air around them seemed to thicken with tension. Eva's grip on Jake's hand tightened as she prepared for the unexpected.

Jake suddenly tugged on his mother's hand, his voice a mix of curiosity and concern. "Mom, there's something in the grass over there."

Eva immediately turned her attention to the tall grass that swayed gently in the breeze. The rustling was more pronounced now, a subtle but persistent movement that hadn't been there before. She glanced over her shoulder and motioned silently to the Venomoth that had been hovering a few paces behind them.

"Lenny, check it out, please," Eva instructed calmly.

Lenny, Eva's trusted Venomoth, fluttered forward. She was a large, moth-like creature with wings that shimmered in hues of violet and purple. Her delicate, but formidable wings beat steadily, sending a soft, rhythmic hum through the air. Venomoth's compound eyes sparkled with intelligence, and her overall graceful appearance belied her considerable battle prowess.

Lenny began to flap her wings with more intensity, sending gusts of wind sweeping across the field. The wind bent the tall grass, forcing it to bow under the pressure, and revealing what lay hidden within.

As the grass parted, a dark figure emerged—a Sneasel, crouched low and ready to pounce. The Sneasel was a sleek, agile creature with a slender, feline build and a coat of dark fur. Its sharp claws gleamed with a menacing edge, and its piercing red eyes flashed with a cold, predatory intensity. The creature's movements were fluid and stealthy, and a palpable sense of aggression surrounded it.

Seeing the hostile demeanor of the Sneasel, Eva quickly pulled out her phone and opened the Pokédex app, aiming to scan the Pokémon to assess its strength and gauge the risk.

However, as she pointed the device at the Sneasel, the screen flickered and struggled to establish a connection. The app displayed a message: "Unable to scan due to strong aura interference."

The Sneasel's hostile aura seemed to overwhelm the app's sensors, preventing it from providing any detailed information. Eva's eyes narrowed as she considered their next move.

"Lenny, stay sharp," Eva murmured, her voice calm despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. She instinctively moved Jake behind her, shielding him from the imminent threat.

The Sneasel hissed, its sharp fangs bared as it slinked closer, each step calculated and predatory. It was clear that this Pokémon was not interested in backing down. Its dark fur bristled with agitation, and the air around it seemed to pulse with an unsettling energy.

Eva's gaze darted to the Sneasel, then back to Lenny. "We need to be careful. This Pokémon is clearly distressed and unpredictable. Let's handle this cautiously."

Jake, his curiosity piqued, tugged at his mother's sleeve. "Mom, what is it? I want to see too!"

Eva's eyes remained fixed on the Sneasel, her mind racing as she assessed the situation. "Jake, stay behind me and don't move," she instructed firmly, her voice tinged with concern. She knew how dangerous this situation could become and wanted to ensure her son's safety first.

"Lenny, keep an eye on it," Eva added, her tone brooking no argument. Lenny, ever vigilant, hovered closer to the Sneasel, her wings fluttering with a soft, steady rhythm. The Venomoth's compound eyes scanned the aggressive Pokémon, ready to react at a moment's notice.

Eva's thoughts raced. She knew that without detailed information on the Sneasel's level or moves, it would be reckless to engage. The safest course of action would be to back away slowly and seek help if needed. She started to signal Lenny to move cautiously away from the Sneasel, hoping to de-escalate the situation.

Just as they began to retreat, the Sneasel's arms started to shimmer with a metallic glow. The eerie steel-type energy pulsed around its claws, a clear indication of its Steel-type moves. Eva's eyes widened in alarm as she recognized the threat. Steel-type attacks could inflict significant damage, and the Sneasel's aggressive stance suggested it might not hesitate to use them.

"Lenny, be ready! It's going to use Metal Claw!" Eva called out, her voice tight with urgency. The Sneasel's glowing claws were a stark reminder of the danger they were in, and she knew they needed to act with caution. The metallic glow intensified, and the Sneasel's body tensed as if preparing to strike.

Jake, still behind his mother, could sense the tension in the air. He clutched at her skirt, his face pale with worry. "Mom, what's happening?"

Eva glanced over her shoulder at Jake, trying to offer a reassuring smile even as her mind raced through their options. "We're just going to take a step back. Stay close to me and keep quiet."

The Sneasel's eyes flashed with a determined glint, and it continued to advance with its metallic claws raised. Eva could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on her, and she knew they needed to get to safety quickly. The combination of the Sneasel's hostile demeanor and the unpredictable nature of its attacks made it crucial to handle the situation with extreme caution.

Eva's heart raced as the Sneasel's claws glowed ominously, and a surge of panic gripped her. The Sneasel's aggressive posture and powerful aura made it clear that they were dealing with a formidable opponent. As fear began to creep into her thoughts, she realized that their current strategy might not be enough. They needed to act fast to protect themselves.

"Lenny, use Quiver Dance!" Eva commanded, her voice trembling slightly with anxiety.

The Venomoth responded immediately, her wings beating faster as she started to swirl gracefully in the air. Lenny's movements became a blur of violet as she danced through the air, her body surrounded by a shimmering, iridescent aura. Quiver Dance was a move that allowed her to enhance her abilities. As she twirled and floated, the dance increased her Speed, Special Attack, and Special Defense stats, making her a even more formidable opponent.

As Lenny continued her dance, the Quiver Dance effect became evident. The previously tense atmosphere seemed to shimmer with a new energy, and Eva hoped that this temporary boost would give them the upper hand they desperately needed against the enraged Sneasel. The Venomoth's enhanced abilities would be crucial in countering the Steel-type Pokémon's attack.

As Lenny continued her Quiver Dance, Jake tugged at his mother's skirt once more, his face earnest with worry. "Mom, it's scared," he said, his voice urgent.

Eva glanced down at Jake, trying to balance her concern with the immediate danger. "Don't be scared, Jake. We're going to be okay. Lenny's here, and I'm here. Nothing is going to happen to you."

Jake shook his head, his eyes wide with determination. "No, it's not me who's scared. It's the Sneasel. It's really scared."

Eva's confusion deepened as she tried to process Jake's words amidst the chaos. "What are you saying??" she asked, her voice rising slightly in frustration.

Just then, the Sneasel, its claws still glowing with a metallic sheen, lunged forward with a sudden burst of speed. The attack was swift and precise, Metal Claw connecting with Lenny in a flash of steel and force.

Eva's heart raced as she saw the Sneasel's claws strike Lenny. Thanks to the boost in speed from Quiver Dance, Lenny managed to dodge the first Metal Claw attack, but the Sneasel was relentless. Overcome with panic, Eva shouted, "Lenny, stop it!" Her voice cracked with desperation.

Despite the urgency in her command, Lenny's response was less than ideal. The Venomoth, still swirling from her Quiver Dance, instinctively released a Confusion attack. The psychic waves shot out towards Sneasel, but the attack was futile. Dark-type Pokémon like Sneasel were immune to psychic moves, and the Confusion had no effect.

The Sneasel, unfazed by the attack, remained focused and hostile, its eyes burning with fierce determination.

Eva's panic deepened as she saw the Confusion attack fail. Realizing that psychic moves were ineffective, she quickly commanded, "Lenny, use Bug Buzz!" However, Venomoth needed a moment to gather energy and prepare for the attack.

During this crucial moment, Sneasel leaped into the air once more, its claws glowing with a fierce metallic sheen. With a swift and powerful strike, Sneasel's Metal Claw connected with Venomoth, sending her sprawling into the tall grass. The impact was jarring, and Lenny struggled to regain her balance.

With Venomoth temporarily incapacitated, Sneasel turned its attention back to Eva and Jake. The Pokémon's growl was low and menacing, radiating pure anger and hostility.

Jake's voice trembled as he cried out, "It is really scared!" His words were nearly drowned out by the chaos of the battle.

Eva, gripped by fear and urgency, was focused solely on her injured Pokémon. Her voice was a desperate shout as she called, "Lenny, NOO!" She had just witnessed her Pokémon take a heavy hit, and her heart raced with panic.

"Mom!!" Jake's voice cut through the noise, trying to get her attention. But Eva, her mind clouded by fear, barely registered her son's pleas.

Meanwhile, Sneasel, driven by its anger and desperation, began to charge towards them with alarming speed. Eva's heart pounded as she realized they were in grave danger. She knew she had one last option left to protect her son and herself.

With a determined cry, she called out, "Maya, help us!"

From the shadows cast by Eva's figure, a large, majestic owl-like Pokémon emerged. It was Decidueye, its eyes glowing with a fierce resolve. The Pokémon's presence brought a glimmer of hope amid the chaos.

Weak to: Flying, Ghost, Fire, Ice, Dark

Immune to: Normal, Fighting

Resistant to: Ground, Water, Grass, Electric

Weakness Removed: Dark

As the shadows parted, a majestic owl-like Pokémon emerged, its presence commanding attention. This was Maya, Eva's trusted Decidueye. With a level of 59, Maya was a formidable Grass/Ghost-type Pokémon, known for her eerie yet graceful appearance.

Decidueye, known for its ghostly and majestic demeanor, resembles an owl with a dark green and cream-colored plumage that blends seamlessly with the forest. Its large, expressive eyes glow with an otherworldly light, hinting at its Ghost typing. The leaf-like feathers on its chest and wings are not only a signature of its Grass type but also serve as tools for its powerful moves.

Maya's most distinctive feature is her ability to use the long-range attacks without physical contact, thanks to her ability Long Reach. This ability allows her to strike enemies from a distance while avoiding moves that could cause recoil damage. Her other ability, Overgrow, makes her Grass-type moves significantly stronger when her health drops below a certain level, turning dire situations into opportunities for a powerful comeback.

In battle, Maya employs a mix of Ghost and Grass-type moves, each contributing to her spectral and natural fighting style. From her signature move Spirit Shackle, which traps opponents and prevents escape, to the eerie Phantom Force that allows her to strike from the shadows, Maya combines her ethereal presence with her formidable combat skills.

Her grace and poise are matched by her tactical acumen, making her a revered member of Eva's team and a crucial ally in this moment of crisis.

Decidueye instantly took action, her eyes glowing with a determined light. She unleashed Spirit Shackle, a powerful Ghost-type move that bound the Sneasel to the ground and immobilized it. The attack was effective, but not overwhelmingly so, revealing that the Sneasel was indeed around the 30th level. Given its lower level, the Ghost-type attack wasn't as devastating as it might have been against a Pokémon of equal or higher strength.

As the Sneasel struggled against the ghostly bindings, it became clear that the Sneasel was not a significant threat compared to what Eva had initially feared. Before the Sneasel could react or attempt to break free, Venomoth, who had been recovering from the earlier attack, quickly recovered and took to the skies. Lenny, now shining with a vibrant Bug-type energy, prepared to strike. With a sudden burst of speed, she used Struggle Bug, a move that unleashed a wave of bug-type energy against the tied-up Sneasel.

The Struggle Bug attack hit the immobilized Sneasel with a sharp, disorienting force, reducing its strength and further weakening its resolve. The combination of Spirit Shackle and Struggle Bug left the Sneasel in a state of disarray, its struggles becoming more feeble as it fought against the combined onslaught of Decidueye and Venomoth.

Sneasel cried out in pain as the Struggle Bug attack landed, its body writhing against the Ghost-type bindings.

"Mommy!!" Jake's voice was filled with distress, the pain unmistakable.

"Honey, don't be scared," Eva said, her voice trembling with relief as she saw the Sneasel immobilized.

"But Mommy! I'm not scared!" Jake's voice cracked with anguish.

Eva's eyes widened in realization as she finally understood what her son was trying to convey. Shocked, she glanced towards the Sneasel, confirming that it was still securely bound by Spirit Shackle. She then turned back to her son.

"Jakey," she knelt down to meet his gaze, her expression filled with concern, "what do you mean, honey?"

"Mommy, I'm not scared," Jake said urgently, pointing at the restrained Sneasel. "That Pokémon is scared. I can feel its pain. It hurts," he whispered, his small body starting to tremble uncontrollably.

"JAKE!" Eva cried out in fear, her heart racing as she enveloped her son in a tight embrace.

"It hurts!" Jake sobbed, tears streaming down his cheeks.

At the same moment, the Spirit Shackle's ghostly restraints tightened around the Sneasel, and Venomoth unleashed Bug Buzz attack. The sharp sound caused Jake to cover his ears, his face contorted in distress as the sensory overload intensified.

Eva's eyes filled with tears as she realized the extent of Jake's suffering. The connection he had with the Sneasel was affecting him deeply, making it clear that his empathy extended far beyond what she had imagined.

"Lenny, STOP! It's hurting Jakey!!" Eva shouted, her voice breaking with desperation. She noticed red marks appearing on her son's forearms, exactly where Maya had bound the Sneasel.

"You too, Maya. Loosen up those binds!"

Venomoth and Decidueye halted their attacks immediately.

"GO AWAY!" Eva screamed at the Sneasel, her voice trembling with fear and her eyes brimming with tears.

The Sneasel growled menacingly, but Venomoth and Decidueye positioned themselves between it and their distressed trainer.

In response, the Sneasel let out a high-pitched shriek and unleashed an Ice Beam aimed directly at Eva.

Decidueye swiftly countered with Razor Leaf, intercepting the Ice Beam and protecting Eva from harm.

"GO AWAY!!" Eva's voice was now filled with frantic urgency.

As the attacks ceased, Jake's condition began to improve noticeably. His eyes were wide with fear and fascination as he observed the intense standoff between the three Pokémon.

The Sneasel, undeterred, launched another attack—this time, a Dark Pulse aimed at Decidueye. Despite Eva's training to mitigate weaknesses against Dark-type attacks, her instincts prompted her to order Maya to evade.

"Dodge it, then strike with Aura Sphere!" Eva commanded firmly, knowing that Sneasel was particularly vulnerable to Fighting-type moves. Seeing that Jake was feeling better, she focused on ending the battle swiftly.

Maya executed the command perfectly, maneuvering out of the way of the Dark Pulse and launching a powerful blue sphere of Fighting-type energy at the Sneasel.

"MOMMY!" Jake cried out in alarm as the Aura Sphere struck Sneasel, sending it crashing to the ground. At that moment, Jake collapsed onto the grass, overwhelmed by the intensity of the situation, while Sneasel lay defeated.

Eva's heart sank as she saw Jake lying unconscious on the ground, his small body still and vulnerable. Panic surged through her veins, rendering her powerless and overwhelmed. Her breaths came in ragged gasps as she tried to comprehend the dire situation unfolding before her.

Just then, a commanding voice cut through the chaos, sharp and authoritative.

"Teleport Jake away, NOW!!"

Eva turned around to see her brother Frank rushing toward her with his Girafarig. The Pokémon stood tall, its yellow and purple body a striking blend of grace and power. With its long neck and mirrored tail, Girafarig exuded a sense of calm authority.

Without hesitation, Girafarig's psychic aura flared as it used Teleport. In a heartbeat, Jake and Girafarig disappeared from the scene, leaving behind the chaos and danger.

The commotion of the battle had attracted attention, and fortunately, it was the attention of Frank, Eva's brother. As he rushed toward the scene, his tall, slim frame and strikingly blond hair made it clear that he and Eva were related. Frank's charisma and presence were palpable; he carried himself with a warm, approachable demeanor that instantly put people at ease. His easy smile and confident stride were evidence of his naturally likeable personality, making him a figure of trust and admiration, especially for young Jake, who saw him as a father figure in his father's frequent absence.

Frank was a Pokémon Ranger, and his years in the field had exposed him to a wide array of strange and extraordinary phenomena. His experiences ranged from battling wild Pokémon to handling rogue trainers, and he had seen a lot of things. But nothing like this. Therefore, his action was simple: the further one could keep away from danger, the better.

As he approached with Girafarig, Frank's priority was clear: to stop the threat and ensure the safety of those involved.

As Jake and Girafarig vanished, Sneasel suddenly looked disoriented and weak, the previous aggresion was replaced by confusion.

Eva, in the midst of this chaos, was utterly lost. Her mind was a whirlwind of panic and disbelief. She stood frozen, her eyes wide and unseeing, struggling to process the unfolding events. Frank, seeing his sister's distress, took decisive action. He turned to her with a sense of urgency. "Sis, you need to knock out the Sneasel! Now!"

Eva's gaze remained fixed and unresponsive, unable to move or react to the command. Seeing her incapacitated, Frank shifted his focus to the Pokémon. "Maya, use Aura Sphere! Lenny, follow up with Stun Spore!" His instructions were clear and precise. Decidueye, Maya, summoned a large, glowing blue sphere of energy and hurled it toward the weakened Sneasel, while Venomoth, Lenny, released a cloud of paralyzing spores.

As the attacks launched, the battlefield was filled with a tense, frenetic energy. Frank's swift actions were a desperate attempt to ensure the situation was brought under control, while Eva struggled to even watch as her Pokémon, guided by Frank's instructions, managed to knock out the Sneasel.

Eva's face twisted with rage and anguish as she stared at the unconscious Sneasel. The anger within her surged, and she screamed at Frank, her voice echoing with desperation and fury.

"WHERE IS JAKE? WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY SON?!"

Frank, though visibly shaken, remained composed. His gaze was fixed on the Sneasel, but his focus was also on his sister's emotional state. Maya and Lenny, ready to follow any command, stood by, their eyes shifting between the siblings.

"MAYA, LENNY, ATTACK IT AGAIN!!!" she cried.

"Calm down, sis," Frank interrupted firmly, though his voice was laced with concern. "We don't know what connection this creature has to Jakey. I arrived just as Maya's Aura Sphere hit it. And I saw Jakey collapse at the same moment. Are you sure he'll be okay if we kill it? Are you 100% sure?"

Eva, caught between her overwhelming grief and rage, hesitated as Frank's words sank in. Her hands trembled, and her tears flowed freely, but she raised them in a gesture that signaled her Pokémon to halt.

"Maya, Lenny, stop," she exhaled, her voice breaking as she struggled to control her emotions.

Frank's calm demeanor contrasted sharply with Eva's turmoil. He glanced at the Sneasel, which was still weak and disoriented from the previous attacks, and then back to Eva, his expression a mixture of worry and determination.

"Let's restrain it for now and figure out what's going on," Frank suggested. "We need to be sure before we make any more decisions."

Eva, though still deeply upset, nodded reluctantly, allowing her Pokémon to lower their attack stances. The tension in the air was palpable as everyone awaited the next move.

Eva's hysteria was rising once more, her voice breaking as she pleaded with Frank.

"I need to get back to Jake! I have to be with him! NOW!"

As her words hung in the air, Girafarig, who had been away with Jake, suddenly reappeared. Frank, with a calm but resolute expression, turned to the Pokémon.

"Take her to Jake, buddy," he instructed.

Girafarig nodded and moved toward Eva. As she saw the Pokémon approaching, she hurried to follow it, her urgency palpable. Without another word, Frank watched Girafarig and Eva teleporting away from view, heading back to where Jake was being cared for.

As Girafarig disappeared, Frank turned toward Eva's Pokémon.

"Okay, you two. Keep an eye on this little rascal. I don't want to get killed."

Maya and Lenny nodded, their eyes fixed on the fallen Sneasel as Frank crouched beside it. He pulled out his phone and used a special Pokédex app to scan the Pokémon.

"Wow. It's only level 27. How did it manage to put up such a fight?" He glanced back at the two Pokémon. Lenny didn't react to Frank rhetorical question, but Maya hooted in annoyance as Frank doubted her skills.

"One attack from either of you should be enough to take it down. We need to bring it back and investigate. Oh, hi Rachel," he said, answering his suddenly ringing phone.

Rachel, Frank's wife, worked at the ranch's Pokémon Center—a unique feature of their family ranch. Petite and energetic, with brunette hair and glasses perched on her nose, Rachel was always brimming with vitality and with jokes. She and Frank had met under unusual circumstances; he had been helping some lost people in the mountains, and she was in the cabin where he brought them. Impressed by his expertise with the wild, Rachel struck up a conversation with him. What began as a casual chat soon blossomed into a dating, then relationship and leading to marriage and a daughter, Monika.

Monika, just a year older than Jake, was adored and somewhat spoiled by her parents. While she shared the family's love for Pokémon, she was not as passionate about them as her cousin Jake. Currently, Monika was away at a summer camp for girls, giving Rachel a few weeks of well-deserved free time.

"What the hell is going on?" Rachel's voice was sharp, her concern evident. She didn't return Frank's greeting.

"First, passed-out Jake gets teleported here, and then Eva goes off the deep end, shouting nonsense. Next time, at least give me a heads-up, you idiot."

"Sorry, love you too," Frank replied with a hint of a smile, though his concern was palpable. "But how is Jake?"

"He's just waking up," Rachel said, her voice softening. "Looking confused."

"Can you give him the phone?" Frank asked urgently.

"I'll try. But first, I need to get him out of your crazy sister's clutches," she chuckled lightly, trying to ease the tension.

"Rachel, this is serious," Frank said, his tone serious. "Jake was somehow connected to a wild Pokémon. He felt the attacks that Eva's Pokémon landed on it. He passed out at the same time as that Sneasel."

Frank glanced at the Sneasel, still unconscious on the ground, to confirm its state.

"Uncle Frank?" Jake's voice was weak, with the faint sound of Eva crying in the background.

"Hey there, little guy. You awake now?"

"What happened, Uncle? I was out with Mom, and now… I don't know what happened," Jake replied, his voice filled with confusion.

"Do you remember what happened after you and your mom encountered that Pokémon?" Frank asked gently.

"Ehm, we met a strange Pokémon. I don't know its name. Do you?"

"Yeah, Jake, it's called Sneasel. Do you remember what happened after you met it? Did it attack you and your mom?"

"Uncle Frank, I don't know. It was just scared."

"What do you mean? Were you scared, or was it scared?" Frank inquired, his voice filled with concern.

"You always tell me to be brave, so I wasn't scared. But it was. It was hiding in the grass, and it was very afraid of Lenny."

"Listen to me, Jake. How do you know it was scared? Did it speak to you?" Frank's curiosity was piqued. He knew there were rare cases where Pokémon with psychic abilities could communicate with humans, but it was unusual and required a high level of power.

"No, it didn't speak. But I felt it. In my head, I felt it. It was hurting, and it was scared."

"And when Mom attacked it, it hurt even more, right?" Frank asked, trying to piece together what had happened.

"Yeah, that's right. It hurt when Lenny attacked. And I couldn't hear properly. My ears were ringing, like bells. I can still hear it, like an echo."

Frank thought to himself, 'Bug Buzz is a nasty move, but how did it come through to Jake like that?'

"Uncle? Mommy is crying. Can you come here?" Jake's voice was trembling with concern.

"Sorry, buddy, but I need to stay with the Sneasel for now. I don't want to risk bringing it close to you again and hurting you. Can you give the phone back to your Aunt Rachel? And go give your mom a big hug, okay?"

"Okay. Auntie?" Jake nodded and extended the phone towards Rachel.

"Rachel?"

"Yes, Frank?"

"How are they?"

"Eva is hysterical. Jakey seems better now, though."

"Do you think they should stay with you? If you think they need to get back home, tell Girafarig to teleport them."

"What about your parents' house? I don't think they should be alone right now."

"You're right. That's a better idea. Can you call my mom and ask if it's okay to teleport them there? Then let Girafarig take them over. After that, come back to me."

"Wait, I can't come to you. I'm on a break now, but I need to return to work soon."

"Haha, not you, Rachel. I meant Girafarig."

"You idiot," she laughed, "So, I need to call your mother before arranging the teleport, but you didn't think to call me before teleporting?"

"Rachel, I thought Jake was dying!" Frank barked, his worry palpable.

"Sorry, that was a bad joke," she said, her tone softening. "I'll take care of Eva and Jake. You handle everything on your end."

Frank hung up the phone and glanced back at the Sneasel. Both Venomoth and Decidueye hovered nearby, their eyes locked on the paralyzed Pokémon.

Still knocked out. Good, he thought as he dialed another number.

"Hi Joe. Got a minute?" Frank greeted his sister's father-in-law after Joe answered the call.

"Hey Frank, what's up?"

"I need something to restrain a Sneasel. It attacked Eva and Jake."

"What? Are they okay?"

"They're fine. I sent them back to the house with Rachel. They're safe now."

Frank quickly explained the situation to Joe. Within a few minutes, Joe arrived on his enormous Tropius, flying into the area with ease as Frank had given him detailed directions on where to fly.

Tropius is a large, dinosaur-like Pokémon covered in leafy, green foliage. Its wings, which resemble palm leaves, flap gently as it hovers in the air, while its long neck and body give it a regal and ancient appearance. The Pokémon's sturdy build and gentle demeanor make it an impressive sight, with its leafy body blending harmoniously with the natural environment.

As Tropius landed gracefully on the ground, the familiar sound of its massive wings fluttering to a halt filled the air. From its back, a distinguished older man leapt down with practiced ease.

This was Joseph Lindenberg, Eva's father-in-law. Joseph was an imposing figure, even in his advanced age. He was noticeably bald, with a head that shone under the sunlight, and his face was lined with the wisdom of many years. His clear, wise eyes revealed a lifetime of experiences and an innate understanding of the world around him.

Joseph's attire was practical and rugged, suited for someone who worked with Pokémon and nature daily. He wore well-worn work clothes: a sturdy shirt and pants, with a utility belt filled with various tools and equipment. His demeanor combined a sense of authority with a gentle, approachable manner, reflecting his deep connection with both the land and its creatures.

Frank turned to Joseph with a relieved expression. "Thanks for coming so quickly, Joe. Here's the situation: The Sneasel attacked Eva and Jake. Jake was feeling what the Sneasel felt, and that's why he passed out. We need to restrain this Sneasel until we figure out what's going on."

Joseph nodded, taking in the details. "I understand. But first, how are Eva and Jake? Are they okay?"

Frank's face softened with concern. "Eva is hysterical, but Jake seems to be fine now. Rachel is with them and taking care of them. They're both at my parents' house."

Joe looked relieved but also worried. "Good to hear they're being looked after."

"Do you know why Jake could feel its pain? It doesn't make any sense," Frank frowned.

"Really?" Joe asked in disbelief.

"Yes. I spoke with him few minutes ago. He told me that he could feel how scared the Sneasel was."

"Huh, let me tell you something. There's a family story that might explain some of this."

Frank raised an eyebrow. "A family story?"

"Yes," Joseph replied, a hint of nostalgia in his voice. "It's about my ancestor, Henry, the first Count von Lindenberg. During his time, he saved a king from a terrible danger. As a reward, he was granted a single boon. Henry's wish was to join an expedition to find the Pokémon Jirachi."

Frank looked skeptical but remained quiet, prompting Joseph to continue.

"According to official records, the quest for Jirachi was a failure. They never found the Pokémon. But within the Lindenberg family, there's a saying that Henry did encounter Jirachi. He asked Jirachi for the ability to connect with Pokémon on a deeper level. And Jirachi granted his wish."

Frank shook his head slightly. "That's a nice fairy tale, Joe. But I'm not sure I believe in that kind of thing."

Joseph's expression remained serious. "It might sound like a fairy tale, but there's been a history in my family of exceptional Pokémon communicators. I've seen it firsthand in some of my ancestors. It's not just a story; it's part of who we are."

Frank glanced at the unconscious Sneasel and then back at Joseph, his skepticism evident but his curiosity piqued. "Well, if there's any truth to it, I hope it can help us figure out what's going on with this Sneasel and how it's affecting Jake."

Joseph nodded, his gaze returning to the Sneasel with a thoughtful look. "We'll see what we can uncover. Let's start by ensuring this Pokémon remains secure and then we can work on understanding its connection with Jake."

Frank pointed at the unconscious Sneasel. "Look, Joe. This Sneasel is only level 27. Eva's Venomoth is at level 53. Even if Sneasel was fully conscious, the mere presence of a Pokémon of that level should have scared it away. That's why I'm puzzled."

Joseph nodded, listening intently.

Frank continued, "My theory is that a strong bond between a trainer and their Pokémon can sometimes boost the Pokémon's power beyond its normal limits. It's like the bond empowers them, making them more resilient or even stronger in battle. But what I saw today—Jake feeling the Sneasel's pain and it attacking him—doesn't quite fit with that theory."

Joseph furrowed his brow, thinking deeply. "That's an interesting theory. I've heard of bonds enhancing a Pokémon's abilities, but this seems more complex. Perhaps it's a temporary bond or something unique to this situation. Pokémon can form various types of connections, some of which might not be fully understood yet."

Frank sighed, shaking his head. "That's what I'm struggling with. I've seen powerful bonds before, but this... this is something else. I just don't know if what we're witnessing is the same type of bond or something entirely new."

Joe looked at the Sneasel, then at Frank. "We might be dealing with a temporary or situational bond that's different from the usual trainer-Pokémon connection. It's hard to say without more information. For now, let's secure the Sneasel and keep an eye on any other anomalies. We may need to investigate further to understand what's really happening."

Frank nodded in agreement, though his concern was still evident. "Alright. Let's make sure the Sneasel stays restrained and see if we can get any more insights into this situation."

As Frank was tying up Sneasel with a rope that Joe has brought, Joe began saying, "You know, this situation reminds me of a journey I took to Hoenn a few years back. I encountered something quite similar, where—"

Before Joe could finish, Girafarig suddenly appeared, its presence cutting off the conversation.

Frank quickly turned to Girafarig. "Hey, buddy. Can you teleport Maya and Lenny back to Eva and then return here?"

Girafarig nodded in acknowledgment, its eyes focused and determined. It gently nudged its head towards Maya and Lenny, ready to follow Frank's instructions.

As Girafarig completed its task and disappeared with Maya and Lenny, Frank and Joe turned their attention back to the Sneasel. They finished the binding of the fainted Pokemon. They worked swiftly and efficiently, ensuring the Pokémon was securely restrained but still able to breathe.

Once they finished, Frank wiped his brow and looked at Joe. "Alright, Joe. Now that we've got it tied up, where do we keep this thing? We can't risk bringing it back to the ranch's laboratory or the Pokémon Center. It's too close to the house, and we don't want it coming into contact with Jake again."

Joe nodded in agreement. "Definitely not the laboratory or the Center. Dining hall as well not. The transformer station is poor place, too."

Frank asked. "What about the Training Area. It's isolated and designed for Pokémon activities, so it should be secure enough."

Joe frowned. "True, but on the other hand, it's a place where a lot of trainers go. If the Sneasel is scared or agitated, it might react poorly to a lot of people. We don't want to risk it causing trouble or getting more stressed."

Frank thought for a moment. "Good point. What about the old barn with Copperajah? It's quite a distance from the main areas of the ranch and rarely used. It should be secure enough and isolated from the regular activity."

Joe's face brightened with approval. "That's a solid idea. The old barn will keep the Sneasel out of sight and away from the regular hustle and bustle. We can set it up to ensure it's secure and monitor it from a distance."

Frank nodded in agreement. "Alright then. Let's move the Sneasel to the old barn. We'll make sure it's well-secured and that the area is properly monitored."

Joe added, "I'll arrange for a few extra guards to keep an eye on it and ensure it stays contained."

With the Sneasel securely bound, Joe gave a nod of approval. "Alright, let's make sure it's really tied up."

Frank agreed, and Tropius, with its immense wings, gently lifted the group. The Grass-type Pokémon used its powerful vines to weave the ropes tighter around the restrained Sneasel, ensuring that it couldn't escape. Satisfied with the extra security, Tropius soared through the sky, carrying Frank, Joe, and the captured Sneasel towards the ranch.

As they flew, Frank pulled out his phone and called Eva. The worry in his voice was evident. "Eva, are you there? How's Jake doing?"

But to his suprise his wife answered. Rachel's voice came over the line. "Jake's doing better now. He's resting, and Eva's calmed down. But we're still at the Pokémon Center."

"Good to hear. We'll be bringing the Sneasel to the old barn," Frank assured her.

Once they arrived at the ranch, Tropius gently landed near the old barn, where a number of Pokémon were housed. The barn was large and well-equipped, with ample space for the Sneasel and various supplies to care for it.

Frank and Joe carefully unloaded the restrained Sneasel from Tropius's back and brought it inside the barn. The old barn, with its quiet ambiance provided a temporary sanctuary for the subdued Sneasel.

Frank immediately set to work, inspecting the Sneasel's wounds and applying a soothing salve to the cuts and bruises it had sustained during the battle.

Once the initial treatment was complete, they placed the Sneasel in a wooden cage within the barn. The cage was designed to be sturdy yet spacious enough to allow the Pokémon some freedom to move. They untied the Sneasel, giving it room to shift around, while still ensuring it remained secure.

Joe then called out his Emboar. The Fire/Fighting-type Pokémon emerged from its Poké Ball with a determined stance. Emboar stood tall and powerful, its fiery mane and robust build a testament to its strength.

Joe commanded, "Emboar, keep a close watch on this Sneasel. Make sure it doesn't move or cause any trouble, no matter what."

Emboar nodded, its eyes burning with determination. It positioned itself strategically near the cage, ready to intervene if necessary, even though the Sneasel was securely contained.

Frank continued to monitor the Sneasel's condition, working efficiently to ensure that the Pokémon would be stable and comfortable. As he worked, he kept a watchful eye on Joe's Emboar, appreciating the added layer of security.

The barn, with its quiet ambiance and the vigilant presence of Emboar, provided a secure environment for the subdued Sneasel. Frank and Joe exchanged glances, knowing that while the situation was under control for now, there were still many unanswered questions about the Sneasel's connection to Jake and what it all meant for the future.

As the evening shadows lengthened over the ranch, the once chaotic scene had calmed into an uneasy stillness. Frank, his hands still stained with the remnants of his effort, glanced at the securely caged Sneasel and then at Joe's Emboar, standing vigilantly nearby.

"We did what we could," Joe said quietly, his eyes scanning the barn with a thoughtful expression. "But this isn't over. There's more to this than we know."

Frank nodded, the weight of the day's events pressing heavily on his shoulders. "I just hope Jake and Eva can find some peace tonight. This… thing," he gestured towards the barn, "is only part of a bigger puzzle."

As they prepared to leave, the first stars began to twinkle in the dusky sky. The ranch, now eerily quiet, seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the next chapter in the unfolding story. Frank's mind raced with questions and worries, knowing that the true impact of the day's events was far from over.
