Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Family First, Battles Second
David was abruptly awakened from his deep sleep by a loud, high-pitched scream that pierced through the stillness of the early morning. The sound jolted him upright, his heart pounding in his chest. Barely registering his surroundings, he leaped out of bed, adrenaline surging through his veins as he rushed towards the source of the commotion.
Stumbling through the dimly lit hallway, David's mind raced with a mix of confusion and concern. His half-closed eyes were struggling to adjust to the brightness as he pushed open the bathroom door, ready to confront whatever emergency awaited him.
But instead of a crisis, David was met with a sight that left him utterly bewildered. There, in the middle of the bathroom, was Eva, bouncing around on the tiled floor, her voice rising in joyous shrieks. Her face was flushed with excitement, a broad smile lighting up her features as she moved with an energy that seemed to defy the early hour.
"What the heck are you doing?" David managed to blurt out, his brain still trying to catch up with the scene in front of him. His confusion was only growing as he tried to make sense of why his wife was so inexplicably happy at what felt like the crack of dawn.
Eva turned to him, her eyes sparkling with a happiness so intense it was almost overwhelming. Without a word, she bounded over to him and flung her arms around his neck, pulling him into a tight, exuberant embrace.
"I love you!!" she cried out, her voice ringing with pure, uncontained joy as she squeezed him tightly. The force of her enthusiasm nearly knocked the breath out of him.
David, still reeling from the sudden shift in mood, looked down at her, completely baffled. "What's going on??" he asked again, his voice edged with desperation to understand. It was clear that something monumental had happened, but in his groggy state, he was struggling to piece it together.
Eva pulled back just enough to meet his eyes, her smile widening even further—if that was possible. She was practically vibrating with excitement as she handed him something small and slender. "Look, Dave, look!" she urged, her voice breathless with emotion.
David took the object from her, blinking rapidly as he tried to focus on it. It took a moment for his sleep-addled brain to process what he was holding. It was a stick—no, not just any stick, a pregnancy test. He stared at the tiny screen, where the results were clearly displayed: a small, unmistakable plus sign.
The realization hit him like a wave, crashing over him with a force that left him momentarily speechless. His eyes widened as he looked from the test to Eva's beaming face and back again.
"What... What? You're pregnant?" he finally stammered, his voice thick with emotion.
Eva nodded vigorously, her eyes brimming with tears of happiness. "Yes, Dave, we're having a baby!" she exclaimed, her voice choked with joy.
David felt a rush of emotions flooding through him—shock, disbelief, but most of all, an overwhelming sense of happiness. A slow, incredulous smile spread across his face as he let the news sink in. He pulled Eva back into his arms, holding her close as he tried to process the enormity of what she had just told him.
For a moment, they just stood there in the bathroom, wrapped in each other's arms, the positive pregnancy test still clutched in David's hand. The early morning light was beginning to filter through the window, casting a soft glow over them as they embraced.
"I can't believe it," David murmured into her hair, his voice filled with awe. "We're having another baby."
Eva pulled back slightly, looking up at him with a teary grin. "You better believe it, Dave."
And as they stood there, holding each other in the quiet of the morning, the reality of their new future began to take shape. Their lives were about to change in ways they couldn't even begin to imagine, but in that moment, all that mattered was the love they shared and the tiny life they had just discovered was growing inside of her.
As David stood dumbfounded in the bathroom, Eva's excitement overflowed. She left him standing there, still processing the news, and bounded out of the room, her joy bubbling over as she jumped and screamed all the way to the kitchen.
In the kitchen, the early morning tranquility was shattered. The Pokémon living with the family were startled awake by Eva's uncharacteristic outburst. Lenny the Venomoth, Speedy the Dustox, Britney the Ribombee, Maya the Decidueye and the others all looked at their trainer in bewilderment. They were used to Eva's calm and composed demeanor, so her current state of exuberance left them unsure of how to react.
To make matters more confusing, Eva was still dressed in just a t-shirt and panties, a far cry from her usual modest bathrobe she wore in the mornings. She continued to bounce around the kitchen like a child on a sugar rush, her joy completely unchecked.
Maya, the ever-composed Decidueye, was the first to react. The Pokémon, normally content to stay by Eva's side, decided that this level of excitement was too much to handle. With a graceful sweep of her wings, she phased through the wall and flew towards the neighboring forest, seeking the tranquility of the trees to escape the unusual chaos.
Other Eva's Pokemon also carefully backed out in the garden, not sure how to react. Only Lenny the Venomoth, Britney the Ribombee and Baloo the Cubchoo stayed in the kitchen.
Meanwhile, the commotion had attracted the attention of other Pokémon in the household. Through the open doors leading to the garden, David's Meganium, Houndemon and Swoobat peeked inside, their expressions a mix of curiosity and concern. But seeing no immediate danger, they decided that whatever was happening inside was too strange for their liking. They turned and padded/flew back outside to resume their lazy morning routine.
Marcel, David's mischievous Ambipom, was the only one curious enough to venture further into the kitchen. As soon as he saw Eva jumping and shouting, Marcel's playful nature kicked in. Without hesitation, he joined in, mimicking her jumps and shouts, turning the kitchen into a bizarre dance party between the blond woman and monkey Pokémon.
Lenny, Baloo, and Britney watched this scene unfold, their large eyes wide with confusion. Their trainer was dancing around with an equally energetic Ambipom, and they had no idea what to make of it.
It was only when David finally made his way downstairs that the chaotic energy began to settle. He entered the kitchen, rubbing his eyes and still trying to fully wake up. He took in the sight of Eva and Marcel bouncing around, and the bewildered expressions of the other Pokémon.
"Okay, Eva, can you calm down?" David asked, a mix of amusement and exasperation in his voice. "And you three, can you help us prepare breakfast? You two, go get some veggies from the garden."
Baloo and Britney, relieved to hear something reasonable, immediately ran/flew out to gather fresh vegetables from the garden. Lenny, however, lingered in the kitchen, her wings fluttering nervously as she awaited further instructions.
"And you, can you help me prepare some toast?" David asked the Venomoth.
Lenny nodded enthusiastically and zipped over to the pantry, eager to help now that there was a clear task at hand.
With breakfast preparations underway, Eva finally began to calm down, her breath coming in short, excited bursts. She turned to her husband, her face still glowing with happiness.
"Why aren't you more excited?" she asked, her voice a mix of confusion and amusement.
David smiled at her, though his expression was tinged with uncertainty. "I am excited, I just... I don't understand," he admitted, scratching the back of his head.
Eva frowned slightly. "What? What do you not understand? You know how babies are made, right? We have a proof sleeping upstairs!"
David hesitated, glancing around at the Pokémon who were now busily working in the kitchen. He lowered his voice, trying to find a way to explain without being too explicit. "You know, since I got back home we've... we've only been together once. And we did that thing you like so much. But Eva, it can't make you pregnant! It doesn't work that way!"
Eva blushed, her cheeks turning a rosy pink as she recalled the details of that night. "Well," she began shyly, "remember at the end, when you were too tired?"
David nodded, still confused. "Yes. And?"
"Well, Dave..." she hesitated, trying to find the right encrypted words. "So you were down under me, and I was doing all the... let's say... lifting. And then suddenly, you were... well.. it was... ehm... it was... it was... unplugged."
David couldn't help but chuckle at how awkwardly she was trying to explain the situation. "Unplugged?" he echoed, raising an eyebrow.
"You, um, slipped out," she whispered, her blush deepening.
David's eyes widened as realization dawned. "Oh... I see."
"And then when I sat back down," she continued, her voice barely audible, "it went into my... you know... other place. But you looked so happy, I don't think you even noticed the change."
David laughed again, this time louder, shaking his head in disbelief. "Well, I'm happy as long as you're happy," he said, pulling her into a gentle hug. "I don't care which place you take me to."
Eva giggled, feeling a mix of embarrassment and affection. As they held each other in the bustling kitchen, the surreal nature of the morning began to settle, and they both started to fully grasp the reality of what was happening.
"Yeah, I will gladly take you to either place," the glowing blonde replied, her cheeks flushing as she gave her husband a playful wink.
But just as they shared that moment, the door creaked open, and their son Jake walked in, interrupting their intimate exchange. His hair was tousled from sleep, and he was beaming with excitement. Apparently, he had been awakened by his mother's earlier screams, and instead of staying in bed, he had ventured out into the garden where he saw Baloo the Cubchoo and Britney the Ribombee gathering vegetables. Never one to miss out on helping, Jake had eagerly joined his mom's Pokémon, and now he stood in the kitchen, his small arms struggling to carry a basket overflowing with ripe tomatoes, pickles, and peppers.
"Where are you taking Dad, Mom? Can I come, too?" Jake asked innocently, his big, curious eyes looking up at them.
Eva's face turned a deep shade of crimson as she realized what Jake had overheard. Her mind raced as she tried to think of how to respond without making things awkward. "Oh my gosh, JAKE!" she yelled, her voice a mix of surprise and embarrassment.
But before she could say more, David jumped in with a quick save, his voice calm and reassuring. "You know, Jake, I haven't been here for so long. Mom was just telling me about the new places in town," he said with a smile, bending down to ruffle Jake's hair affectionately.
Jake's eyes lit up with excitement at the mention of new places. "Really? Can we all go together? I want to see everything!"
Eva breathed a sigh of relief, grateful for David's quick thinking. She knelt down beside Jake, her heart swelling with love for her son. "Of course, we can go together, sweetie," she said, giving him a warm hug. "But first, let's get these vegetables ready for breakfast. You did such a great job helping Baloo and Britney!"
Jake beamed with pride as he handed over the basket. "I even found the biggest tomato!" he declared, pointing to a particularly large, red tomato nestled among the other vegetables.
David chuckled as he took the basket from Jake. "Wow, that's a big one, buddy. It's going to taste great in a salat or sandwich."
As they started preparing breakfast together, the earlier tension melted away, replaced by the comforting routine of family life. The kitchen buzzed with activity as Lenny the Venomoth brought/levitated over the bread for toasting, and Baloo and Britney returned with more freshly picked produce. Marcel, still in his playful mood, began juggling a few tomatoes he stole from the counter, making Jake giggle with delight.
Eva and David exchanged a glance, their earlier conversation now just a funny memory. They were reminded once again that their lives were full of little surprises, but the love they shared as a family would help them navigate whatever came next.
As they sat down to eat, the morning sun streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow over the table. Jake chattered excitedly about all the things they could do that day, while Eva and David listened, their hands intertwined under the table.
No matter where life took them, they knew that they would always have each other—and soon, their family would grow by one more.
As they enjoyed their breakfast, the kitchen filled with the comforting sounds of clinking cutlery and cheerful conversation. Jake, his face bright with excitement, leaned in and said, "You know, there's this new jumping arena in town. A few days ago, Angie took me and some other kids there. It was awesome. You should try it too."
David looked up from his plate, his eyebrows raised in curiosity. "You think?"
Jake nodded vigorously. "Yeah! It was so much fun. I bet you'd love it. But there were only kids jumping around, I didn't see no grown-ups in there with us."
David chuckled, a playful smile on his face. "Maybe I'm too old for that kind of thing, don't you think?"
Jake thought for a moment, his face scrunching up in concentration. "Well, maybe if you asked, they'd let you jump too. We can try!"
As they continued to discuss the merits of jumping arenas, Eva, who had been quietly and happily observing their lively conversation, decided it was time to shift the topic. With a gentle smile, she pulled Jake onto her lap, cradling him affectionately.
"Listen to me, honey. Let's be serious for a moment," she said, her voice softening.
Jake immediately grew silent, his eyes widening with curiosity as he looked up at his mother.
"Jakey, you know that Uncle Frank is my older brother," Eva began, her gaze steady and warm.
Jake nodded, his eyes reflecting his attention.
"Well," Eva continued, "how would you like to be an older brother yourself?"
Jake's eyes widened even more at the thought. He had always watched with a hint of envy as some of his friends had siblings to play with, while he had only his older cousin Monika. The idea of having a brother or sister of his own was both thrilling and puzzling.
"But, Mom," he said hesitantly, "I don't have any younger brother or sister."
"That's true," Eva confirmed with a smile. "For now. But would you like to have one?"
Jake's excitement was palpable. He had always wanted a sibling to share his adventures with. "And what do I have to do?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine curiosity.
Both parents burst into laughter, their faces alight with joy. David grinned, leaning in to ruffle Jake's hair. "You don't have to do anything, little guy. You just have to wait."
"Wait? Wait for what?" Jake's confusion was evident as he looked from one parent to the other.
David glanced at Eva with a mischievous glint in his eye. "Did you hear your mom screaming her lungs out this morning?"
Eva playfully smacked David's arm, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I was not screaming my lungs out!"
"Yes, you were, Mom!" Jake laughed, his eyes sparkling with amusement. He was rewarded with another affectionate ruffle of his hair.
"So," David said, his voice filled with excitement, "when Mom was screaming, she just found out that you're going to be an older brother. So, what do you think?"
Jake's face lit up with a mix of surprise and joy. "Really?"
Eva nodded, her eyes shining with happiness. "Yes, Jakey. We're going to have a new baby in the family."
Jake's smile grew wider as he hugged his mother tightly. "That's so cool! I can't wait to meet the baby. Can I help with everything?"
David and Eva exchanged a look of warmth and pride. "Of course," Eva replied, her voice full of love. "You're going to be a wonderful big brother."
As the family basked in the warmth of the morning sun and the joy of the news, the kitchen seemed to glow with a new kind of happiness. Jake's excitement was infectious, and the promise of new beginnings filled the air with a sense of anticipation and hope.
As they finished their breakfast, the kitchen was a hive of activity. The Decidueye, Maya, had finally returned, her ghostly presence adding a calm contrast to the earlier excitement. She looked at her trainer with a mix of curiosity and concern, her feathers rustling slightly as she landed gracefully on the kitchen counter. Eva, with a warm smile, offered Maya a Poke Puff. Maya's eyes brightened with delight, and she hooted softly in gratitude before nibbling on the treat.
"You know, Dave," Eva began, breaking the comfortable silence, "yesterday, your dad spoke to his Trevenant. He mentioned that ghost Pokémon can communicate with us. How does that work?"
Eva's gaze shifted to Maya, who was now contentedly munching on her Poke Puff. The Decidueye looked up, her eyes reflecting a sense of awareness about the conversation.
David took a moment to ponder. "Well, I've had conversations with Rootie myself. He speaks directly into my mind when I ask him something. You can definitely try it with Maya. But remember, Trevenant is a high-level Pokémon, around level 110. Maya, on the other hand, is about level 60. So she might need to level up a bit more before she can communicate like that."
Maya's sharp eyes flicked between David and Eva as they discussed her abilities. She seemed to be listening intently, her feathers subtly bristling in response.
Eva took a deep breath and turned to Maya with a hopeful expression. "Can you speak to me, Maya? In my mind? Can you tell me something?"
Maya tilted her head to one side, her large, expressive eyes focused on Eva. She let out a soft, thoughtful hoot but remained otherwise silent.
David looked at Eva with a questioning glance. "So?"
Eva sighed, a trace of disappointment in her voice. "Nothing. I don't know. I'm not hearing anything..."
Just then, little Jake, who had been sitting quietly in his mother's lap, hopped down and made his way to Maya. He gently caressed her wing, his face filled with admiration. "You're so awesome, Maya. Totally awesome!"
Maya paused, her eyes locking with Jake's. For a moment, the kitchen fell silent as the family watched the interaction with bated breath.
Suddenly, Jake's eyes widened in astonishment. "MOM!!!!" he exclaimed loudly, his voice echoing through the room and startling the Pokémon who were eating around the table.
Eva jumped to her feet, alarmed. "What? What is it?" she asked, her heart racing.
"She talks to me! She talks!!!" Jake shouted, his excitement palpable.
"WHAT??" Both David and Eva exclaimed in unison, their faces reflecting a mix of shock and curiosity. They all turned to Maya, who now seemed to be preening her feathers with a self-satisfied air.
Eva approached Jake, her voice trembling with a mix of hope and fear. "What did she say to you?"
Jake's face lit up with a mix of wonder and disbelief. "She said my name. I heard it in my head, like a soft whisper. She just said, 'Jake.'"
Eva and David exchanged astonished looks, their minds racing to process this new revelation. Maya, for her part, continued her calm grooming, seemingly unfazed by the excitement she had just stirred up.
David finally broke the silence, his voice filled with awe. "It seems like Maya is capable of more communication than we realized. This is incredible."
Eva, still in shock but smiling, reached out to Maya and gently stroked her feathers. "Thank you, Maya. This is really awesome!"
As Eva began tidying up the kitchen, Jake suddenly shielded his eyes with his hands, a look of intense concentration on his face.
"What are you doing?" David asked, chuckling at his son's odd behavior.
"Well, Mom told me I shouldn't look at girls' panties," Jake explained, his voice muffled by his hands. "And now she's walking around wearing just them."
Eva's cheeks flushed a deep red, and she quickly grabbed a nearby dish towel, wrapping it around herself in a makeshift robe. She sat down with an embarrassed laugh, her face burning with the realization of her oversight.
David burst into laughter, finding the situation both humorous and endearing. "Well, that's one way to learn about modesty, I guess!"
Eva gave David a playful nudge. "Sorry, Jakey. I was so excited this morning that I forgot to put on my robe."
Jake peeked through his fingers and then looked around the kitchen, trying to hide his own laughter. "It's okay, Mom."
"Ha! Well, now that we're all dressed and properly presentable," David said, regaining his composure, "I have a challenge today. The challenger is set to arrive at 10. Jake, would you like to come with me? We can pick up your egg and maybe Gastly as well, and you can watch your awesome dad win a battle."
Jake's eyes lit up with excitement, but he hesitated, recalling the previous match. "But last time, Mom and Maya almost won over you and Ryan," he pointed out, remembering the close contest. "Maybe Mom should be the Frontier Brain!"
Eva laughed and playfully ruffled Jake's hair. "Aw, thanks, sweetie. But today, you'll get to see different opponents. And your dad will probably use different Pokémon."
As if on cue, Ryan the Kleavor, who was lounging in the garden, let out a disgruntled noise at the mention of the past draw. His large axes clacked together in annoyance, clearly displeased with being called out.
David frowned, turning towards Ryan and speaking to him with a mixture of apology and encouragement. "Okay, sorry, Ryan. Don't listen to them, it was a draw. But if you want to outshine Maya, we need to train harder."
Maya, perched on the counter, gave an indignant hoot, her feathers ruffling in annoyance at the implication that the rocky bug could best her. Jake, finding Maya's reaction amusing, walked over and gave her a comforting hug.
Then he giggled, as Maya's voice again said his name in his mind. "Jake."
David turned back to Jake. "So mister Pokémon-translater, do you want to come with me? We have a guy here, who was yesterday fighting Angie. And she lost."
"What?" Jake shouted, clearly remembering how Angie won one of the previous Saturday tournament.
"I asked her to go easy on him. But he was able to knock that annoyingly swift Koffing out." David explained.
"That's impossible!" Jake shook his head. He still remembered how Angie's Koffing managed to easily defeat four opponents in a row.
"Well, if you want to see me and him battling, you need to get ready, young man."
Jake nodded enthusiastically, but then his mother chimed in with a smile, "Okay, sweetie, but first off to the shower and brush your teeth. We need to get you ready for the day."
After Jake was finished in the bathroom and everyone was dressed, David suggested taking Athena the Mandibuzz for a flight to the field. However, Eva, with a firm and clear voice, vetoed that idea. Instead, they opted for the next best thing.
Jake was thrilled to be riding on Fluffy, the imposing three-headed Houndemon, which stood nearly two meters tall. The large Pokémon galloped across the ranch with a powerful stride, her massive paws thundering against the ground. David ran alongside them, effortlessly keeping pace despite the brisk speed of Fluffy's run.
On the other side of Fluffy, Gastly was levitated as the young ghost chose to accompany them, too. Well, she chose to accompany the Egg which they'd picked up at the Pokémon centre and which was secured in Jake's backpack.
Jake's excitement was palpable as he clung to Fluffy's dark, bristled and warm fur. The exhilarating sensation of the wind rushing past him was exhilarating. As he hugged the massive Houndemon, he began to hear faint, fragmented thoughts in his mind. Though the voices were indistinct, Jake was certain they were coming from Fluffy. The experience was both intriguing and exhilarating.
After about fifteen minutes of swift, invigorating travel, they arrived at the arena. Jake marveled at how David, seemingly unfazed, had kept up the entire time without showing any signs of fatigue. "Wow, Dad, you're not tired at all," Jake exclaimed, his admiration evident in his voice.
David helped Jake dismount from Fluffy, and as the Pokémon's thoughts faded from Jake's mind, David gave his son a proud smile. "Well, running alongside Fluffy is good exercise, and we're just about there."
Jake glanced at his father, curious. "Dad, I think I was hearing Fluffy's thoughts. It wasn't clear, but I felt like she was thinking about food."
David nodded in acknowledgment. "That's amazing, Jake. It seems like you're developing a unique connection with Pokemon. But let's not get too distracted; we don't want to keep our challenger waiting."
As they approached the arena, the clock neared 10 o'clock, and the challenger was already present on their side of the battlefield. The challenger, a young man in his mid-twenties named Ethan, was waiting with an air of quiet confidence. Ethan was also from Bohemia and had a reputation for being a skilled trainer who had never quite clinched a tournament victory but had made a significant mark by placing in the top four multiple times. His trademark was a strategic and calculated approach to battles, earning him respect in the competitive circuit.
Ethan had a lean, athletic build and wore a well-worn but cared-for battle outfit. His eyes were sharp and focused, and he had an aura of intensity that suggested he took every challenge seriously. Despite his accolades, Ethan was known for his humility and sportsmanship, which had won him many fans.
David approached Ethan with a handshake, and they exchanged a few friendly words. "Nice to meet you, Ethan. Ready for today's match?"
Ethan's eyes gleamed with determination. "Absolutely, Mr. Lindenberg. I've heard a lot about you and your impressive track record. I'm looking forward to a great battle."
David gestured for Jake to take a seat on the benches beside the arena. "Go ahead and watch from here, Jake. I'll get things started with Ethan."
Jake was surprised to see that Angie who was said to lost a match to Ethan was serving as a referee. He half-expected to see his uncle Frank doing this job, but it was not the case. Jake waved at the redhead with a grin and she waved back.
Jake took a seat and pull out the egg from his backpack, his excitement and anticipation palpable. The atmosphere was electric as he settled in, eager to see his father face off against a formidable opponent. The stage was set, and both trainers were ready to showcase their skills in what promised to be an unforgettable match.
David began the battle by releasing his trusted Skuntank from its Pokéball. The large, imposing Pokémon emerged with a fierce hiss, its dark and poison type emanating an intimidating aura. Skuntank's eyes narrowed as it stared across the battlefield at Ethan, clearly ready for a challenging fight.

Stench – The stench of Skuntank may cause target to flinch
Corrosion – Skuntank can poison even steel target
Weak to: (Ground)
Immune to: Psychic
Resistant to: Poison, Ghost, Grass, Dark
Weakness Removed: Ground
Ethan took a moment to assess the situation. He knew that Skuntank's Poison and Dark typing made it resistant to Psychic and Ghost-type moves but weak to Ground-type attacks. With this in mind, he decided to send out his own Pokémon—a powerful and versatile Excadrill. But he did not know two things, first David trained his Pokemon to get rid of the weakness to Ground-type moves. And second, the ability Corrosion allowed Skuntank to poison even the Steel types.
Excadrill, a Ground and Steel type, emerged with a swift drill-like motion, its metallic body gleaming under the sunlight. It looked determined and ready to dig in for a tough battle. Ethan and David exchanged nods, each trainer prepared for a high-stakes match.
"Let the battle begin!" Angie shouted starting the match.
As the battle commenced, Ethan immediately commanded
"Quick Excadrill, use Swords Dance!"
The ground trembled slightly as Excadrill's claws glowed with an intense, sharp energy. This move increased its attack power significantly, setting the stage for a powerful offensive.
"Let's start with Toxic Spikes!" David responded quickly
Skuntank released a cloud of poisonous spikes onto the battlefield, spreading a hazardous layer across the ground. This move would poison any Pokémon that came into contact with it, adding an extra layer of strategy to the fight.
"Let's boost our defense. Use Iron Defense, now!"
Excadrill's metallic armor hardened, boosting its defense and making it more resistant to Skuntank's attacks. This defensive maneuver was important to withstand Skuntank's potent moves.
"Okay, let's try your defense. Use Acrobatics!" called David.
The poison-dark type Pokémon leapt into the air and performed a series of agile flips, striking Excadrill with a forceful attack that capitalized on its enhanced speed.
"Hold on, Excadrill!" Ethan called. And luckily for him, Excadrill's increased defense managed to mitigate some of the damage.
Seeing that Excadrill was now well-defended and had increased its attack power, Ethan decided it was time to go on the offensive.
"Let turn this around. Use Earthquake!"
Earthquake, a Ground-type move that would normally take advantage of Skuntank's weakness to Ground attacks. The ground shook violently as Excadrill's attack slammed into Skuntank, causing some damage. But Ethan didn't know about Skuntank's training.
"Another one!" Ethan called and the ground started to shake again.
David frowned lightly, but quickly replied.
"Use Acrobatics again to stay off the ground. Then get closer and attack with Crunch!"
Skuntank jumped up in the air, and his jaws glowed darkly as it bit down hard on Excadrill, the Dark-type move causing critical damage with potential to lower Excadrill's defense. Also as Excadrill staggered back by the impact of the Crunch, it stepped into a Toxic Spike and its body suddenly glowed with poison colour.
"What's that?" Ethan frowned.
"That's the Corrosion ability," David explained with a grin.
The battle was continued, and both Pokémon began showing signs of fatigue. Ethan's Excadrill, now slightly poisoned from the Toxic Spikes, was still a formidable opponent but was clearly affected by the damage it had taken.
"Enough of the ground attacks. Use Rock Slide and stop that Skuntank!" Ethan , sensing the need for a decisive move, ordered his Pokémon to use rock-type move, hoping to finish off Skuntank with a barrage of sharp stones falling down on top of it.
"Quickly, use Dig to dodge it!" David, seeing Skuntank in a dangerous position, urged it firstly to hide.
"Now, Gunk Shot!" Skuntank unleashed a powerful blast of toxic sludge that hit Excadrill squarely from behind as Skuntank managed to succesfully dig itself through the battlefield.
Both Pokémon exchanged more attacks and Skuntank managed to weather the assault and retaliated with a well-timed Sludge Bomb. The noxious blast enveloped Excadrill, dealing a critical hit that finally pushed it beyond its limit.
With a loud cheer from Jake on the sidelines, "Go Skuntank! You've got this!" Skuntank's victorious roar echoed across the arena. Excadrill, overwhelmed and poisoned, finally collapsed to the ground.
"Excadrill is unable to battle, Skuntank's the winner!" Angie announced.
David and Skuntank stood victorious as Ethan recalled his exhausted Pokémon. The arena erupted in applause from the spectators (mostly young trainers from the Ranch), and David clapped his Pokémon on the back. Ethan shouted towards David with a respectful nod. "Well played, Mr. Lindenberg. Your Skuntank was formidable. Congratulations."
David grinned, his pride evident as he thanked Ethan. "You put up a great fight, Ethan. Now choose your second Pokémon."
David decided to continue with his formidable Skuntank, while Ethan sent out his second Pokémon, a sleek Seviper. The Poison-type snake Pokémon slithered into the arena, its menacing fangs and striking appearance clearly indicating that it was ready for battle. But as it appeared, the Toxic Spikes activated and Seviper's body got enveloped by the violet hue.
"Continue!" shouted Angie.
"Use Gunk Shot!"
David, not one to back down from a challenge, immediately commanded. The air filled with the noxious scent of poison as Skuntank unleashed a violet ball of energy aimed directly at Seviper.
"Seviper, dodge it and use Haze!" Ethan instructed. Seviper swiftly slithered to the side, avoiding the Gunk Shot. As it exhaled a swirling mist, the battlefield was momentarily obscured, nullifying the Toxic Spikes.
"Skuntank, don't let up! Use Crunch!" David shouted. Skuntank lunged forward with its jaws wide open and large dark fangs appeared in front of him, attempting to chomp down on Seviper several times. The Dark-type move was powerful, but Seviper's slithering movements allowed it to evade most of the attacks.
"Seviper, reply with Giga Drain!" Ethan called out. Seviper's fangs glowed with a green energy as it sunk them into Skuntank, draining its vitality and recovering some of its own health. The attack landed, causing Skuntank to shriek and stagger.
David clenched his fist, determined not to lose ground. "Skuntank, use Sludge Bomb!" Skuntank spewed a viscous blob of poison towards Seviper. The attack hit its mark, causing Seviper to flinch and recoil from the painful impact.
"Seviper, use Wrap to stop Skuntank!" Ethan commanded urgently. Seviper lunged forward and coiled itself around Skuntank, squeezing tightly. The pressure made it harder for Skuntank to move and breathe, causing it to grunt in pain.
"Fight through it, Skuntank! Use Flamethrower!" David ordered. Despite being restrained, Skuntank managed to unleash a blazing stream of fire from its mouth. The intense heat scorched Seviper's scales, causing it to hiss in discomfort but maintaining its grip.
Ethan, focused and tactical, called out, "Seviper, let's fight fire with fire. Finish it off with Fire Fang!" Seviper's fangs ignited as it bit down hard on Skuntank, the searing flames intensifying the pain. Skuntank, now visibly worn out and breathing heavily, struggled to maintain its stance.
"Hang in there, Skuntank! Use Screech!" David urged. He already knew that Skuntank would probably lose, but wanted to have advantage into the next round. Skuntank emitted a piercing scream that lowered Seviper's defense, but it was clear that the battle was taking its toll on the Poison-Dark type.
"Seviper, keep up the pressure with another Fire Fang!" Ethan shouted. Seviper's fangs glowed once more, and the second bout of fiery bites proved too much for Skuntank. With a final, exhausted growl, Skuntank collapsed, unable to continue.
"Skuntank is unable to battle. Seviper is the winner. David, call out your next Pokémon!" Angie, the referee called out.
David, unshaken by the setback, recalled Skuntank with a 'Thank you' to its Pokéball and sent out his next Pokémon: Lickitung. The pink, blob-like Pokémon wobbled onto the field, its long tongue flicking out as it prepared for battle.

"Lickitung, start with Defense Curl!" David commanded. Lickitung rolled into a tight ball, its defenses significantly bolstered.
"Seviper, Fire Fang!" Ethan called. Just as Seviper charged toward the curled Lickitung, David called his next move.
"Escape with Rollout!"
Lickitung began to roll across the battlefield, dodging Seviper's attack and gathering momentum with each pass. The speed of Lickitung increased with every second, and the pink Pokémon was slamming into Seviper with increasing power over and over. Ethan, watching carefully, knew Seviper needed to counter quickly.
"Seviper, use Crunch to interrupt its attack!" Ethan ordered. Seviper tried to bite at Lickitung, but the rolling momentum made it difficult to land a solid hit. The Crunch attack did manage to inflict some damage, but Lickitung continued to roll on.
David, seeing an opportunity, instructed Lickitung, "Now, use Power Whip!" Lickitung stopped its rolling and its tongue extended like a whip, lashing out at Seviper with tremendous force. The blow made Seviper recoil in pain, its movements becoming sluggish.
Ethan, trying to regain control, called out, "Seviper, use Coil!" Seviper wrapped itself tightly, boosting its attack, defense, and accuracy, preparing for the next strike.
"Lickitung, don't let up! Hit it with Brutal Swing!" David commanded. Lickitung swung its massive tongue with ferocious strength, delivering a powerful hit with dark-type energy that sent Seviper reeling.
With Seviper weakened and Lickitung ready for the final blow, David decided it was time for a spectacular finish. "Lickitung, use Rollout again and follow it up with Giga Impact!"
"Try to stop it with Iron Head!" Ethan called.
But Lickitung rolled across the battlefield once more, its momentum combining with the force of Giga Impact. As it charged, its body glowed with immense power. The collision was immense, sending a shockwave through the arena. Seviper, unable to withstand the overwhelming force, was knocked out cold.
"Seviper is unable to battle, Lickitung's the winner!" Angie announced the end of this round.
The arena erupted in Jake's cheers as Lickitung's final attack clinched David's victory in this round. "Go, Dad! You did it!"
David smiled and remotely high-fived his son.
As the final round of the battle commenced, Ethan sent out his last Pokémon: Chesnaught. The large, armored Grass/Fighting-type emerged onto the battlefield, its imposing presence immediately catching everyone's attention. Chesnaught's spiked shell and powerful limbs made it clear that it was a formidable opponent.
David, determined to maintain the momentum, commanded Lickitung to start with Defense Curl again. Lickitung curled into a tight ball, its defense boosted again.
"Hmm, Chesnaught, let's start with Bulk Up!" Ethan called aiming to boost attack and defense.
"Alright, Lickitung, follow up with Rollout!" David shouted as his Pokémon finished its status move first.
Lickitung uncurled and began rolling with increased speed, its body glowing with each successive roll. The momentum built up, and the rolling attack barreled towards Chesnaught. Ethan, watching intently, knew that Chesnaught needed a to stop the rolling pink beast.
"Chesnaught, use Grass Knot!" Ethan called out. Chesnaught's eyes glow green and vines shot out of the ground and coiled around Lickitung's legs, causing the rolling Pokémon to stumble and fall. The ground seemed to shake as Lickitung hit the turf, struggling to regain its balance.
Chesnaught seized the opportunity, moving in close to deliver a series of powerful Hammer Arms. Each strike was thunderous, sending shockwaves through the battlefield. Chesnaught's muscular arms slammed down with relentless force, aiming to overpower Lickitung.
Lickitung, though down, quickly retaliated with Mega Punch before David could instruct it in any way. The two Pokémon engaged in what resembled a fierce boxing match. Lickitung's powerful punches collided with Chesnaught's Hammer Arms, creating a spectacle of strength and skill.
David, observing the intense exchange, smirked and gave Lickitung a new command. "Use Disable, Lickitung!"
Lickitung's eyes glowed as it emitted a wave of psychic energy. Chesnaught suddenly found itself punching Lickitung without the Fighting-type energy charged in its arms. Ethan's eyes widened in realization, but before he could react, David commanded, "Now, Lickitung, use Zen Headbutt!"
"Spiky Shield!" Ethan cried.
Lickitung charged forward, glowing with a super-effective psychic energy and slamming into Chesnaught with overwhelming force. Unfortunately, Chesnaught had not enough time to activate its protective move and was launched through the air, flying across the battlefield before crashing into the wall with a resounding impact. The force of the collision left Chesnaught dazed and struggling to rise.
But Chesnaught wasn't finished yet.
"It's not over. Use Synthesis!" Ethan commanded.
With determination, Chesnaught's body started absorbing sunlight to heal and recover some of its lost health. The recovery was brief but significant, giving Chesnaught a renewed burst of energy.
"Chesnaught, unleash Leaf Storm!" Ethan commanded. Chesnaught's body glowed as it summoned a violent storm of razor-sharp leaves all over the battlefield. The Leaf Storm battered Lickitung, its power overwhelming and causing Lickitung to reel from the relentless barrage.
David, maintaining his calm composure, did not issue a direct command. As the Leaf Storm began to dissipate, it became clear that Lickitung had dug underground to avoid the attack.
"Lickitung, now!" David shouted.
Lickitung erupted from the ground beneath Chesnaught, catching the Grass-type off guard. The sudden burst of movement allowed Lickitung to strike with a powerful Dig followed immediately by Giga Impact. The combined force of the attacks drove Chesnaught into the wall once more, leaving it battered and on the brink of defeat.
Chesnaught, still resilient, tried to push itself up, but its energy was nearly depleted. Lickitung, panting heavily from the exertion of the Giga Impact, also showed signs of fatigue and moved with great effort.
Both Pokémon, exhausted and weakened, stared each other down, each struggling to catch their breath. The arena was filled with tense silence as the crowd awaited the final outcome. Suddenly, both Chesnaught and Lickitung collapsed simultaneously, their energy spent.
The refereeing Angie raised her arm, declaring the battle's outcome. "Both Pokémon are unable to continue. The match is over!"
David, having only lost two Pokémon compared to Ethan's three, was declared the winner. Jake and Gastly, watching with wide eyes, were ecstatic. Jake leaped up and cheered loudly, his excitement palpable. Gastly floated around, bobbing up and down in a ghostly dance.
Ethan approached David with a grateful smile. "Thank you, Mr. Lindenberg. That was an incredible battle. Your Lickitung is awesome, and I learnt a lot!"
David, still smiling, extended an offer. "It was a great fight, Ethan. How about staying on the ranch for a few days? You can recuperate and then challenge me again when you're ready."
Ethan's eyes lit up with enthusiasm. "I'd love that! Thanks."
With the promise of more battles to come and a few days of rest and camaraderie ahead, the day ended on a high note, full of excitement and anticipation for future challenges.
