Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Egg's Origin
During the next few weeks, the entire Lindenberg family fell into a new routine, adjusting seamlessly to the presence of David and the responsibilities that came with it. David's return was a game-changer for the Frontier business, as he took charge of managing the daily operations and overseeing the matches that took place. The family decided to use the outer training battlefields instead of the inner one, valuing its expansive space and the natural elements that could add to the challenge and excitement of the battles.
David quickly adapted to his role as a Frontier Brain. The Frontier's requirements were clear, and he met them with dedication and enthusiasm. The arrival of trainers eager to challenge him became a regular occurrence. Despite his enthusiasm, David grappled with determining the best battle style that would suit him as a Frontier Brain. He was aware that this would take time and experience to refine, and he remained patient and open to learning.
One of David's initial surprises was the varying skill levels of the trainers who came to face him. He had anticipated a high level of competence, but found that many were not as prepared as he had hoped. Some trainers lacked the ability to adapt to sudden changes in the battle environment, struggling to adjust their strategies when David introduced unexpected tactics. This was especially evident when David implemented scenarios that tested their compatibility with their Pokémon partners. Many trainers faltered under these pressures, revealing weaknesses in their adaptability and strategic thinking.
Even among those who could handle the unexpected, David discovered that strength was another significant hurdle. While many trainers had developed a strong bond with their Pokémon, their overall power was often insufficient to overcome his team. This discrepancy became a key factor in the matches, as David's Pokémon were not only well-trained but also strategically positioned to exploit the weaknesses of their opponents.
Currently, David's matches followed a three-on-three format, designed to test trainers comprehensively. He usually opened the battle with his Skuntank. This Pokémon had been perfectly trained to remove its previous weaknesses, particularly to ground-type moves, making it an exceptionally resilient opponent. Few young trainers could manage to overcome Skuntank, let alone the rest of David's team.
If a trainer managed to get past Skuntank, David would usually call in his Lickitung. This Pokémon was seasoned and skilled in deploying tricky strategies that could turn the tide of a battle. Lickitung's unpredictability added another layer of challenge for the trainers, particularly when it was using Rollout move and quickly attacking from all sides.
After Lickitung was down, David had a interesting choice to make based on the demeanor of the challenger. If the trainer came across as sincere, honest, and genuinely dedicated to their Pokémon, David would opt for a less intimidating approach by sending out his three-headed Houndemon, named Fluffy. She had a very balanced strength and was David's favorite for battles that were meant to be more forgiving.
On the other hand, if David judged the trainer to be arrogant, unpleasant, or even unkind to their Pokémon, he would unleash his Ambipom, Marcel. This seemingly harmless, double-tailed monkey was one of David's most formidable partners. Ambipom was renowned for its exceptional speed and a diverse range of powerful moves. Its deceptively innocent and playful appearance belied its true strength, and it had maintained an undefeated streak since David began his tenure as a Frontier Brain. Ambipom's swift, unpredictable attacks and deceptive appearance made it a perfect choice for dealing with less admirable challengers.
Overall, David was finding his footing as a Frontier Brain, learning from each match and gradually honing his style. The process was as much about personal growth as it was about evaluating the skills and attitudes of the trainers who sought to test themselves against him.
With David now managing the day-to-day operations of the Frontier, his parents, Joe and Anna, found themselves with a surprising amount of free time. This newfound freedom allowed them to focus on other important matters, particularly the potential upcoming royal visit. Recognizing the significance of such an event, they wasted no time in reaching out to their network, eager to gather information on how best to prepare.
Joe, always resourceful, began contacting old friends and acquaintances who might have insights into royal protocols. Among them was Matthew, an old friend and former member of the royal guard. Matt had not only served the crown but had also been involved in the logistics of royal visits, making him a valuable source of information. To Joe and Anna's delight, Matt offered to visit them personally and spend the weekend at their ranch.
The weekend arrived, and with it, Matthew—a tall, broad-shouldered man with a genial demeanor and a wealth of stories. The Lindenberg ranch, usually a place of rigorous training and serious battles, transformed into a scene of relaxation and camaraderie. The smell of grilled meat wafted through the air as Matt, Joe, and Anna sat around the outdoor barbecue. The weather was perfect, with a gentle breeze rustling the leaves of the nearby trees, and the sun casting a warm glow over the sprawling fields.
As they sipped whiskey and tended to the grill, Matt regaled them with tales of his time in the royal guard. He spoke with the knowledge of someone who had seen and done it all, his tired old voice carrying a wealth of experience. The stories ranged from amusing anecdotes about royal children's quirks to more serious accounts of the extensive security measures that were in place whenever a member of the royal family traveled.
"One of the most important things to remember," Matt said, leaning back in his chair and taking a slow sip of his whiskey, "is not to worry too much in advance. The royal family doesn't make these decisions lightly. If they do decide to send someone here to train in the way of Pokémon, you'll know well ahead of time."
Anna, always a meticulous planner, listened intently, occasionally jotting down notes. "But what if we're not prepared? What if something goes wrong?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Matt smiled reassuringly. "There are already established protocols for situations like this. The royal family doesn't leave anything to chance. Before anything happens, the royal guard will send someone here to assess your ranch. They'll evaluate the security, inspect the facilities, and interview everyone here to ensure that everything meets the royal standards for education and safety."
Joe nodded, visibly more relaxed after hearing this. "So, they'll guide us through the whole process?"
"Exactly," Matt confirmed. "You're not in this alone. It's done by the book. And in case of security problems, the guard will work with you every step of the way. They have a vested interest in ensuring everything goes smoothly. After all, it's not just about training—it's about protecting the royal reputation and ensuring their heirs receive the best possible education."
As the conversation continued, Matt offered additional insights into the royal protocols. He explained the importance of discretion, the potential for media scrutiny, and the need to maintain a high level of professionalism at all times. He also emphasized the role of the royal guards as more than just protectors—they were also advisors and coordinators, ensuring that everything from accommodation to dietary needs was handled with precision.
Throughout the weekend, the three of them spent a lot of time over their shared experiences and newfound understanding of the gravity of the situation. Matt's visit was not just informative; it was also a reminder of the strong connections and friendships that had been forged over the years. As the weekend drew to a close, Joe and Anna felt a renewed sense of confidence. They knew that if the royal family chose their ranch as the training ground, they would be ready.
As they waved goodbye to Matt on Sunday evening, Joe turned to Anna with a smile. "I think we've got this. I was afraid how it works, but after what Matt told us, I'm sure that we'll be able to handle whatever comes our way."
Anna nodded, her earlier worries now replaced with a sense of determination. "We'll make sure everything is perfect. This could be the opportunity of a lifetime, and we're going to make the most of it."
The weekend had not only provided them with valuable insights but also strengthened their resolve to take on this new challenge together.
Eva's and Frank's parents, Petr and Lucy Prochazka, decided to embark on a much-anticipated three-week vacation to the distant and beautiful Kalos region. The allure of exploring a new region was too great to resist, and they were eager to experience the culture, cuisine, and history that Kalos had to offer. However, they also saw this trip as a perfect opportunity to spend time with their grandchildren, Jake (the son of Eva and her husband David) and Monika (the daughter of Frank and his wife Rachel). After suggesting the idea to both sets of parents, they were met with quick and eager agreement. The prospect of some quieter, more peaceful time at home without their energetic children was an appealing one for all the parents.
With the decision made, Petr and Lucy soon found themselves boarding a plane to Kalos, two excited grand-children in tow. Their primary base of operations was Lumiose City, the bustling heart of the region. Lumiose, with its towering Prism Tower, vibrant streets, and countless attractions, was a perfect place to keep both Jake and Monika entertained. The city's vast array of cafés, boutiques, and Pokémon battle venues provided endless opportunities for exploration. Petr and Lucy made sure to visit the famous Prism Tower, where the kids were thrilled to see the city from the observation deck. They even got to enjoy a few thrilling rides at the nearby amusement park, where laughter and screams of joy filled the air.
However, Lumiose City was just the beginning of their Kalos adventure. Determined to give Jake and Monika a taste of the region's natural beauty and cultural heritage, Petr and Lucy planned several day trips to some of Kalos' most iconic locations. Their first adventure took them to Azure Bay, where they enjoyed a relaxing boat ride on the crystal-clear waters. The bay's serene environment was a stark contrast to the bustling city, and the kids were captivated by the sight of wild Water-type Pokémon swimming alongside their boat. They even managed to spot a Lapras in the distance, much to Jake's delight.
Next, they traveled to Avignon Town, a charming village known for its old-world charm and rustic architecture. The cobblestone streets and historic buildings transported them back in time, and the local market was filled with unique crafts and delicious food. Jake and Monika were particularly fascinated by the traditional performances held in the town square, where local trainers displayed their skills in a series of friendly Pokémon battles.
Their journey continued to Arche Valley, a location steeped in legend and mystery. The valley's towering cliffs and hidden caves were said to be home to ancient Pokémon, and the children were enthralled by the tales of long-lost treasures hidden within its depths. Although they didn't find any hidden treasure, they did manage to catch a glimpse of a rare Honedge floating through the air, which added an extra thrill to their exploration.
One of the highlights of their trip was a visit to the Castle of Chivalry, an ancient fortress that had been converted into a training ground for aspiring knights and Pokémon trainers alike. As they toured the castle, they stumbled upon an intense battle between a member of the local Elite Four and a challenger. The sight of powerful Pokémon clashing in such a historic setting was nothing short of breathtaking, and Jake and Monika watched in awe as the two trainers demonstrated their mastery of battle strategy and technique.
From there, they journeyed to Mt. Molteau, a majestic mountain that was rumored to be home to the legendary bird Pokémon Moltres. Despite their hopes of witnessing the fiery avian soar through the skies, luck was not on their side, and Moltres remained elusive. However, the trek up the mountain was an adventure in itself, with the family encountering various wild Pokémon and enjoying the stunning panoramic views from the summit.
Their spirits remained high as they made their way to Odyssey Village, a quaint settlement known for its Rhyhorn racing track. The excitement was palpable as they watched the powerful Rhyhorns thunder down the track, their trainers shouting encouragement from the sidelines. Jake and Monika were enthralled by the spectacle, cheering for their favorite racers and even getting the chance to meet one of the winning Rhyhorns up close after the race.
The final leg of their journey took them to the Parfum Palace, a grand estate that once housed royalty. While the palace itself was an architectural marvel, Petr and Lucy were more interested in the museum section that was open to the public. The museum was filled with fascinating exhibits, including ancient artifacts, historical documents, and rare Pokémon relics. The children marveled at the ancient Poké Balls and statues of legendary Pokémon, while Petr and Lucy took in the palace's opulent surroundings. For Lucy, the highlight of the visit was the gift shop, which was stocked with a vast array of perfumes and scented products. She eagerly purchased a selection of luxurious perfumes, not just for herself, but also as gifts for Eva and Rachel, knowing they would appreciate them, too.
Meanwhile Rachel and Frank lay side by side in bed, their bodies still warm and tingling from the intense workout they had just shared. Both were panting heavily, catching their breath in the dim light of their bedroom. The room was quiet, save for the sound of their breathing and the soft rustle of the sheets. Rachel stared up at the ceiling, her mind drifting away from the afterglow and into deeper thoughts.
After a few moments of silence, she suddenly spoke up, her voice thoughtful. "You know, could I ask you for a favor?"
Frank, still half-lost in the haze of their recent activities, groaned playfully. "Again?" he growled with a grin, already turning toward her, ready for more.
Rachel rolled her eyes and gave him a light smack on the arm. "No, you idiot," she said, her tone playful but with a hint of seriousness. "I mean work-related."
Frank let out another exaggerated groan, this time with a mock grimace. "Gross," he muttered, but his expression softened as he looked at her, clearly curious about what she had on her mind. "What's up?"
Rachel took a deep breath, her eyes still fixed on the ceiling. "You know about that egg that Eva and Jake brought to the Pokémon Center?" she began.
Frank nodded, his curiosity piqued. "Yeah, what about it?"
Rachel hesitated for a moment, as if trying to find the right words. "Ever since it's been in the center, I've had this...feeling. Like there's something lurking around. I can't really describe it, but it's like there's always something just out of sight—around the corner, or right behind me. I know it sounds crazy, but I can't shake the feeling."
Frank raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing on his lips. "Maybe you're getting old and paranoid?" he joked, though his tone was light.
Rachel shot him a look, half-annoyed, half-amused. "You can be such an asshole sometimes," she said, but there was no real bite to her words. She sighed and continued, more seriously this time. "I'm not kidding, Frank. There's something there. Something...unsettling."
Frank's teasing demeanor faded as he saw the seriousness in her eyes. "Did you check the security footage? Maybe it's just a stray Pokémon or something?" he suggested.
Rachel nodded. "Yeah, I checked the videotapes," she said, shaking her head slowly. "But I can't help it. I keep hearing these distant voices, like whispers. And they're always just out of reach. What's weird is that it only happens when the egg is in the center. If Jake takes it somewhere else, the feeling disappears."
Frank frowned, his brow furrowing in thought. "Eva mentioned that Jake found the egg in the forest, but she doesn't know exactly where. Did she tell you anything more?"
"No, she told me the same thing," Rachel replied, her expression troubled. "It's strange, right? An egg with an unknown origin, and now these weird disturbances...I don't like it."
Frank nodded slowly, piecing together the information. "So, we've got an egg of unknown origin, strange feelings, and now voices that only you seem to hear when it's around. And you said you don't know what Pokémon it could be?"
"Yeah," Rachel sighed, running a hand through her hair. "At first, I thought it might be a Cubone. Which, you know, would be pretty sad considering the legend about it and its mother. But now, I'm not so sure."
Frank rubbed his chin, deep in thought. "If it were a Marowak, you would've probably caught it on tape, right? Or at least Chimecho would have sensed something."
"Exactly," Rachel agreed. "But there's been nothing. Chimecho hasn't picked up on anything, and she's pretty sensitive to disturbances. Unless it were a Ghost-type, she might sense it, but..."
"But she hasn't," Frank finished her sentence, his mind working through the possibilities. "Okay, so we're dealing with something unusual. It could be a Ghost-type Pokémon, but it's managing to stay under the radar. Interesting. Could it be some sort of spirit or a Pokémon with ghostly abilities?"
Rachel shrugged, though her worry was evident. "It's possible. I just...I don't know. It's been bothering me for days, and now that Jake is with your folks, the egg is in the center all the time. I feel like we need to figure out what's going on before something happens. Or worse, something catches Jake with the egg."
Frank nodded, his expression turning serious. "Okay. Tomorrow, after I'm done with the ranger stuff, I'll come by the center. We'll figure this out together."
Rachel smiled at him, relief washing over her face. "Thanks, babe," she said, her voice soft. "I knew I could count on you."
Frank leaned in and kissed her on her lips. "Always," he murmured.
Rachel's smile turned mischievous as she suddenly sat up and straddled him, her eyes glinting with a different kind of energy. "And now, it's over. I have the high ground," she said as she started to grind on top of him, her voice playful and teasing.
Frank chuckled, squeezing her butt. "Whatever you say," he grinned.
Frank made it a point to regularly check the natural surroundings of the ranch and the adjacent town, ensuring that both the land and its Pokémon inhabitants were in balance. Over the years, he had come to know every nook and cranny of the area, as well as the Pokémon that held dominion over different territories. Frank had developed a deep respect for these creatures, understanding that they were as much a part of the land as the trees and rivers. His goal was always to maintain a harmonious relationship with them, recognizing that peaceful coexistence was key to the safety and prosperity of both humans and Pokémon.
In the south, a vast marshland stretched out, home to a powerful Quagsire that ruled the wetlands with quiet authority. Frank had managed to befriend this Quagsire over time, recognizing its calm and steady nature. The Quagsire, in turn, respected Frank's presence and often assisted in keeping other, more troublesome Pokémon in check. Frank would occasionally bring the Quagsire some special treats, such as berries or fresh water, as a gesture of goodwill. In return, the Quagsire ensured that the marshlands remained peaceful, deterring any wild Pokémon that might pose a threat to the ranch.
To the west, a large forest served as the domain of a formidable Donphan, a creature known for its incredible strength and fierce protectiveness of its territory. Frank had approached the Donphan with caution at first, but after several encounters, they had reached an understanding. The Donphan appreciated Frank's respect for its space and responded in kind, allowing him to pass through the area without incident. Occasionally, Frank would help the Donphan by clearing debris or providing food during harsh seasons, further strengthening their bond.
To the north lay the town, and on its outskirts, a pack of mischievous Meowths led by a cunning Persian. Frank had a more complicated relationship with this group. The Meowths were notorious for their pranks, often sneaking into town to steal shiny objects or play tricks on the townspeople. Frank didn't mind their antics as long as they stayed harmless, but when they began to steal food or cause real trouble, he had no choice but to step in. Despite this, he maintained a tenuous peace with the Persian, often bringing the pack leftovers from the ranch. This delicate balance kept the Meowths in check, creating an alert but peaceful relationship between Frank and the Persian.
The eastern forest, however, was a different story. It was a dense, dark place ruled by a fearsome Victreebel. Frank had learned early on to avoid this territory unless absolutely necessary. The Victreebel was known for its vicious nature, capturing and devouring its prey alive. And humans were no exception. It was a predator in the truest sense, and Frank knew better than to challenge its authority within the forest. A few years ago, there had been an attempt by local trainers to drive the Victreebel out, but they had only succeeded in wounding it. This act of aggression had led to a period of unrest, with the Victreebel's subordinates venturing beyond the forest to attack the ranch and surrounding areas. It wasn't until the Victreebel recovered that order was restored, as it commanded its underlings to respect the borders once again.
While the Victreebel was undeniably dangerous, Frank acknowledged the strange, almost honorable code it adhered to. It kept its domain within the forest, rarely venturing out unless provoked or in dire need. Frank understood that as long as he respected the boundaries, the Victreebel would do the same. But he also knew that crossing those boundaries could be deadly.
As Frank patrolled the ranch and the surrounding lands, his thoughts drifted back to Rachel and the unsettling presence she had felt near the Pokémon egg. He couldn't shake the feeling that whatever was lurking around might be connected to the wild Pokémon in the area. His hope was that this mysterious presence came from the south or west—territories where he had established a certain level of trust with the ruling Pokémon. If it originated from the town, he was confident he could handle it, given his relationship with the Persian and the Meowths.
But the thought of it coming from the east, from the dark forest under the rule of the Victreebel, sent a chill down his spine. If that were the case, they could be dealing with something far more dangerous than they had anticipated.
It was late afternoon when Frank finally made it to the Pokémon Center to visit Rachel. The center was quiet, with only a pair of trainers lingering after a friendly match, their Pokémon being tended to by the healing machines. The soft hum of the equipment and the occasional beeping filled the air, adding to the serene atmosphere of the place. Before coming here, Frank had taken the precaution of borrowing his sister Eva's Pokémon—Decidueye, a dual Grass/Ghost type that was not only powerful but also highly perceptive to ghostly presences. Given the strange occurrences Rachel had described, Frank figured that Maya, as the Decidueye was known, would be an invaluable ally. Normally, Frank would use his Houndstone, but he had instructed his ghost-type to secretly travel in shadow of his daughter Monika and protect her in distant Kalos region in case of need.

Maya had a rich history with the family. She was Eva's very first Pokémon, gifted to her as an egg when she was just a young girl. Their parents, seasoned travelers with a love for discovering new places, had brought the egg all the way from the Alola region. It had hatched into a Rowlet, a small, round and curious owl-like creature that quickly became Eva's closest companion following her everywhere. Over the years, Rowlet had grown, evolved, and matured into a formidable Decidueye, a Pokémon with a unique combination of Grass and Ghost abilities, and an almost eerie connection to the shadows.
Now, Maya was an essential part of the family and Eva's most trusted partner. However, since Frank was not her original trainer, there was a brief moment of awkwardness when he asked Maya to hide in his shadow. Shadows were deeply personal to a Decidueye, and while Maya was intimately familiar with Eva's shadow and even with Eva's son's (Jake's) shadow, Frank's was different—its patterns and movements were foreign to her. It took a few moments, and a bit of quiet concentration, before Maya was able to fully meld into the darkness at Frank's feet, her presence becoming nearly undetectable.
As Frank entered the center, Rachel greeted him with a mix of relief and apprehension. "Ah, my man! There you are!" she said, trying to keep her voice light. "So, what's the plan?"
"Just go about your normal routine," Frank replied calmly, his eyes scanning the room. "And let me know as soon as you feel that...presence or whatever again."
He settled into a corner of the room, choosing a spot that allowed him to keep an eye on all the entrances and dark spaces. His senses were on high alert, and he could feel Maya's presence subtly shifting with the shadows, ready to react. Rachel moved to her computer, her fingers dancing across the keyboard as she tried to focus on her work, though the tension in the air was palpable.
Minutes passed in silence, the only sound the clicking of keys and the occasional mechanical whir of the Pokémon Center's machines. Then, Rachel suddenly stiffened, her eyes widening slightly as a shiver ran down her spine. "It's here," she whispered, barely audible. "Can you feel it? It's like...it's suddenly colder."
Frank nodded, his gaze sharpening as he motioned for Maya to reveal herself. Slowly, with an almost ethereal grace, the Decidueye emerged from the shadows, her form materializing like a wraith. "Maya," Frank murmured, his voice low, "do you sense that aura? Is it ghostly, like you?"
Maya responded with a solemn nod, her keen eyes narrowing as she honed in on the source of the disturbance. Her feathers ruffled slightly as she extended one wing, pointing directly towards the adjacent bathroom. The bathroom shared a wall with the nursery, but to access it physically, one would have to go around the corridor.
"Let's lure it out," Frank whispered, a plan forming in his mind.
He raised his voice slightly, trying to maintain a casual tone. "Rach, can you bring the egg over here, please? I want to have a closer look at it."
As Rachel moved to retrieve the egg from the climatized room, Frank leaned closer to Maya, his voice dropping to a barely audible whisper. "Keep watching, Maya. Let me know the moment it leaves the bathroom."
Maya's sharp eyes remained fixed on the bathroom door and adjacent wall, her body tense and ready. Meanwhile, Rachel's nerves were on edge. The idea that a ghostly Pokémon was lurking so close unnerved her, but she trusted Frank's judgment. With a deep breath, she carefully lifted the incubator containing the mysterious egg, her hands trembling slightly as she made her way back to her office.
"Stay low, Maya," Frank instructed as Rachel re-entered the room, carrying the incubator with the egg. The Decidueye subtly hide her aura, making herself less noticeable as she continued to monitor the situation.
Rachel set the incubator on her desk, and she and Frank leaned in, pretending to study the intricate patterns on the egg's shell. The room was quiet, but the tension was palpable, like a storm cloud hovering just out of sight. They could both feel it now—the presence growing stronger, more focused, as if whatever was in the bathroom was drawn to the egg.
Frank's heart pounded in his chest, but he kept his expression neutral, not wanting to alert whatever was out there. His thoughts raced. If this was a ghost-type Pokémon, it could be dangerous, especially if it was interested in the egg. But it could also be something entirely different, something unknown and potentially more threatening.
Maya remained perfectly still, her gaze unwavering as she continued to monitor the bathroom. The air felt thick, heavy with anticipation, as they waited for the mysterious Pokémon to make its move.
"Okay, Deena, you're up," Frank whispered, his voice barely audible as he reached for a Pokéball. The atmosphere in the room was thick with tension, and even the faint hum of the Pokémon Center's equipment seemed to fade into the background.

A flash of light revealed Deena, a sleek and powerful Pyroar with a fiery mane that crackled softly in the dim light. Deena was not just any Pyroar; she was the offspring of Joe's father's legendary Pyroar Maddy, a Pokémon with a long history of loyalty and strength in the Lindenberg family. Frank had chosen her specifically for this task, knowing that her keen senses and powerful presence would be invaluable.
"Use Odor Sleuth," Frank whispered, his voice steady despite the growing tension.
Deena's nostrils flared as she began to sniff the air, and from her muzzle, a light beam was emitted, scanning the room with a spectral glow. The beam moved slowly, methodically, as if it were peeling back the layers of darkness that clung to the corners of the office. Frank's eyes followed the light intently as it filled the space and then crept into the adjacent room where the incubators were kept.
Suddenly, a form began to materialize in the beam's path, emerging from the shadows like a wisp of smoke. It was a Pokémon—one composed of gas, with a round, black face surrounded by a swirling blue haze. Its wide mouth revealed two sharp fangs, and its large white eyes, with their deep black pupils, glimmered with a mischievous yet curious expression. A Gastly.
Frank's brows furrowed as he quickly reached for his phone, opening the Pokédex app to scan the Pokémon before him. The device beeped softly as it registered the Gastly, displaying its stats and data on the screen. Frank's eyes widened slightly as he realized how young the Gastly was, judging by its low level and limited moveset.
Gastly
Level: 2
Name: N/A
Gender: Female
Type: Ghost / Poison

"It's just a Gastly," Frank whispered to Rachel, who was still leaning over the egg, her eyes filled with concern. "And it's probably harmless."
The Gastly seemed blissfully unaware that Odor Sleuth had made it visible. It floated lazily around the room, its gaze drifting from one incubator to another. But then, its movement slowed, and it stopped in front of the spot where Rachel had taken Jake's egg. The Gastly hovered there, its eyes narrowing as if searching for something.
Frank observed the scene with a growing sense of curiosity. "Yes," he nodded, "it's looking for the egg."
Rachel's eyes flicked to Frank, uncertainty clouding her features. "Do you think you could bring it back to the room and pretend you don't see it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Frank considered her request, weighing the risks. "No," Rachel whispered before he could respond.
"Why not? Are you scared?" Frank raised an eyebrow, trying to gauge her reaction.
"It's not that," Rachel replied, shaking her head. "I just can't pretend that I don't see it. It's too... weird."
"Okay," Frank agreed, his tone serious. "Then I'll do it. Both of you," he added, turning to Deena and Maya, "stay here and don't show yourselves until I give the signal."
With careful, deliberate movements, Frank picked up the egg and placed it back in the incubator. He made sure to move casually, avoiding any direct eye contact with the Gastly. However, as he walked towards the climatized room, he couldn't help but notice that the Gastly was watching him intently, its gaze locked onto the incubator in his hands.
After Frank returned the incubator to its original place, he turned to leave. But before he could step away, a low, mournful wail filled the air. The sound was soft at first, almost like a distant wind, but it grew louder, more sorrowful, as it emanated from the Gastly. Frank froze, his heart skipping a beat as he slowly turned around.
The Gastly was not looking at him but was instead circling the incubator, its eyes fixed on the egg inside. The sorrow in its gaze was palpable, and Frank felt a pang of sympathy for the young ghost Pokémon.
Frank's hand tightened around Deena's Pokéball as he took a cautious step towards the Gastly. "Hey, little friend," he said softly, trying to keep his tone soothing. "Why are you so interested in that egg?"
The Gastly's eyes widened in shock, clearly startled that someone could see and speak to it. Frank noticed its gaze flickering between him, Deena, and the egg, its emotions a jumble of confusion and fear.
Frank raised a calming hand, palm open to show he meant no harm. "Don't worry," he continued gently. "Are you lost? Can we help you? I see that you're new to this life. We can guide you."
But the Gastly's anxiety only seemed to increase. Its eyes darted around the room, as if searching for an escape, and then they settled back on the egg with a look of desperate longing. Frank could feel the tension rising, and he knew he had to tread carefully.
"What is wrong with the egg?" Frank asked, taking another step forward. He reached out slowly, his hand extending towards the incubator.
In a sudden burst of movement, Gastly's eyes flared with a fiery rage. A weak Night Shade attack materialized from Gastly's eyes and aimed directly at Frank. But Deena, the ever-vigilant Pyroar, was ready. With a fierce growl, she unleashed a voiced-move, Snarl. The dark-type attack easily overpowered the ghostly Night Shade. The force of the move sent the young Gastly reeling, its form flickering as it was knocked back, temporarily incapacitated.
Frank sighed, lowering his hand. "What shall we do?" Rachel asked, her voice laced with concern as she watched the Gastly's unconscious form drifting gently up and down in the middle of the room.
"You hide the egg," Frank replied after a moment's thought. "I'll stay here and wait for it to wake up. It's very young—there's probably some trauma or strong emotion driving it."
Rachel nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. She carefully lifted the incubator and carried it to another room, ensuring the egg was safely out of sight. Meanwhile, Frank had Deena use Odor Sleuth again, this time sweeping the entire room to ensure there were no other hidden surprises.
As they waited for the Gastly to regain consciousness, Frank couldn't shake the feeling that this was more than just a random encounter with a wild Pokémon. There was something weird about the Gastly's connection to the egg, something that hinted at a story yet to be uncovered.
And Frank was determined to get to the bottom of it.
After a few tense minutes, the Gastly began to stir, its gaseous form shifting slightly as it regained consciousness. Slowly, it opened its large, white eyes, blinking in confusion. For a moment, the young ghost Pokémon seemed disoriented, uncertain of where it was. It floated in place, glancing around the unfamiliar surroundings—the sterile room filled with incubators, the strange man watching it closely, and the imposing presence of Deena, the Pyroar, her eyes glowing with a cautious vigilance.
"Where are you from? I can help you," Frank spoke softly, trying to convey warmth and understanding. He could see the fear and confusion in the Gastly's expression, and he wanted to assure it that he meant no harm.
But the Gastly, realizing that the egg it had been so fixated on was no longer there, suddenly panicked. Without warning, it turned and shot through the wall, its gaseous form easily slipping through the solid structure.
"Follow it!" Frank yelled, urgency coloring his voice as he sprang into action. Deena and Maya, the Decidueye, responded instantly. Maya, being part Ghost-type herself, effortlessly phased through the wall, her keen senses locked onto the fleeing Gastly. Deena, unable to follow through the wall, dashed out the door, her powerful legs propelling her forward as she raced to keep up.
Frank followed closely behind, adrenaline coursing through his veins as they pursued the Gastly. The chase led them out of the Pokémon Center and into the open, with Gastly darting towards the forest to the west. The spectral Pokémon moved with purpose, its erratic path suggesting it wasn't just running away—it was heading somewhere specific.
"It's not just fleeing aimlessly," Frank thought, his eyes narrowing as he tried to anticipate Gastly's next move. "It's running towards something!"
As they sped through the landscape, they passed an area where several large trees lay felled, their trunks scattered across the ground like fallen giants. Frank recognized the area immediately—it was known to be part of an Ursaring's territory, a place where even experienced trainers tread carefully.
"Wait!" Frank shouted, trying to get Gastly's attention. "Gastly, wait! This is an Ursaring's territory. It's dangerous for you!"
But the Gastly either didn't hear him or didn't care. It continued its flight, undeterred, its path leading directly towards a dark, foreboding cave nestled at the edge of the forest. Frank's heart sank as he spotted something at the cave's entrance—a large pile of bones, some of them bleached white by time and exposure. He watched in horror as the Gastly slowed its flight, its gaze locking onto the skull with one long horn resting atop the pile. With a mournful wail, the Gastly floated down and disappeared into the hollow socket of the skull.
Frank's mind raced as the pieces of the puzzle began to fit together. "Oh, shit," he muttered under his breath, realization dawning on him. "This Gastly must have been created when something killed that Pokémon. It didn't want to die... so it became a ghost."
A deep sense of sorrow washed over Frank as he understood the tragedy that had unfolded here. The Gastly wasn't just any wild Pokémon—it was the lingering spirit of a creature that had met a violent end, its soul refusing to pass on. It had been drawn back to its former body, unable to let go of the life it once had.
Frank took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. "Gastly," he called out gently, stepping closer to the pile of bones. "Come here. It's not safe for you. Come with me. Please."
But the Gastly remained hidden within the skull, its form barely visible as it clung to the remnants of its past life. Frank could sense the Pokémon's fear, its reluctance to leave the only thing it knew—the place where it had met its tragic end.
Before Frank could make another attempt to coax the Gastly out, a deafening roar echoed from the depths of the cave. The sound was deep and menacing, vibrating through the ground and sending a chill down Frank's spine.
He spun around just in time to see a massive Ursaring emerge from the shadows, its eyes blazing with fury. The bear-like creature stood over 2 metres high. The beast charged towards them, its powerful limbs shaking the earth with each step.
"Deena, stop it! Use Flamethrower!" Frank shouted, his voice sharp with command.
Deena, ever alert, sprang into action. She opened her maw, and a searing beam of red-hot fire shot forth, lighting up the darkening forest with its intensity. The flames engulfed the charging Ursaring, and it roared in pain, its thick fur catching fire. The Ursaring tried to push through the blaze, its massive body straining against the heat, but Deena was relentless. She increased the power of her Flamethrower, the fire roaring even louder as it forced the Ursaring back towards the cave entrance.
Finally, the Ursaring could take no more. With a final, enraged bellow, it stumbled back into the cave, retreating from the flames.
"This is bad," Frank said urgently, turning to his Pokémon. He knew the danger wasn't over—Ursaring probably had the ability Guts, which meant that being burned would only make it stronger, much stronger. "Deena, Maya, get ready. We can't stay here for long."
But as they started to back away, Frank glanced back at the Gastly, still hiding within the skull of its former body. His heart ached for the young ghost Pokémon, trapped between worlds, haunted by the past it couldn't escape.
"Gastly," he called out one last time, his voice filled with compassion. "You don't have to stay here. Let me help you."
For a moment, the Gastly seemed to hesitate, its large, sorrowful eyes peeking out from the hollow of the skull. But the roar of the Ursaring echoed once more from deep within the cave, and the Gastly recoiled in fear, retreating further into the only home it had ever known.
From deep within the cave, another roar erupted, this one louder and more ferocious than before. Frank's heart pounded as the Ursaring charged out once again, but this time, it wasn't alone. Two smaller Teddiursa cubs, their eyes gleaming with a mix of curiosity and aggression, trailed behind their enraged parent.
Frank's experience with wild Pokémon had taught him the importance of strategy in such encounters. A direct confrontation could easily spiral out of control, especially with a powerful and protective Ursaring leading the charge. "Deena, you're up to fight the big guy! Maya, protect me and Gastly!" he commanded, his voice steady despite the rising tension. He didn't want to call out more Pokémon in order not to provoke the bear family even more.
Deena, the Pyroar, immediately squared off against the advancing Ursaring. The wild bear Pokémon's muscles rippled beneath its thick fur, and its claws dug into the earth with each thunderous step. The two Teddiursa flanked their parent, mimicking its aggressive stance, but their smaller size made them faster and more unpredictable.
"Deena, use Yawn on all of them!" Frank ordered, knowing that this would be their best chance to neutralize the threat without escalating the battle.
Deena responded by letting out a deep, exaggerated yawn, her jaws stretching wide as she exhaled. From her mouth, several large, shimmering bubbles floated out, lazily drifting towards the Ursaring and its cubs. The Yawn bubbles enveloped the bear family, and for a moment, it seemed like the plan might work—their movements slowed as drowsiness began to take hold.
"They should soon fall asleep. Now, use Grass Knot to slow them down!" Frank commanded.
With a sharp, green glow in her eyes, Deena summoned the power of nature. The ground beneath the bears erupted with thick vines and tendrils of grass, which wrapped around their legs, tangling them up and causing them to stumble. The Ursaring and Teddiursa tripped and fell, crashing into the dirt in a tangle of limbs and growls.
"Go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep!"
Frank muttered under his breath, hoping desperately that the bears would succumb to the Yawn's effect. But his hopes were dashed as he quickly scanned the Ursaring with his Pokédex app and saw the ability Vital Spirit flash across the screen. "Damn it," he swore under his breath. Vital Spirit prevented the Ursaring from falling asleep—an important detail that made his plan fail.

Meanwhile, the Teddiursa cubs, seemingly unaffected by the Yawn, began to stir, their eyes glinting with a feral intensity. Frank assumed they had inherited the same ability from their parent. As the Ursaring got back on its feet, it fixed its gaze on Deena, its eyes narrowing with primal fury, while the Teddiursa cubs noticed movement near the pile of bones. Gastly, still hiding within its former skull, was now in their sights.
"Maya, no Ghost-type moves—they won't work on these Normal-types. Use your Grass attacks to protect me and Gastly, but let's try not to harm them unless absolutely necessary," Frank instructed Decidueye, his voice carrying a mix of caution and determination. But to be sure, his hand was on his powerful Quaquaval's Pokéball, ready to send in the water/fighting type as reinforcement. Maya nodded and swooped down, positioning herself between the curious Teddiursa cubs and the pile of bones where Gastly hid.
Deena, sensing the growing threat from the Ursaring, unleashed another Flamethrower. The intense flames roared forth, engulfing the Ursaring in a torrent of fire. The mighty bear roared in pain, but instead of retreating, it pushed through the flames with sheer determination, its eyes now blazing with rage.
"Deena, switch to Solar Beam!" Frank shouted in order to avoid activating Guts, knowing that powerful grass-type ranged attack might work just as good and cannot activate burn. "Charge it up and dodge as much as you can until it's ready. Use Protect if you need to!"
Deena began gathering sunlight in her mane, her body glowing with radiant energy as she prepared the Solar Beam. Meanwhile, she darted and weaved, narrowly avoiding the Ursaring's powerful Hammer Arm strikes. Each time the Ursaring's massive fist crashed into the ground, it sent tremors through the earth, missing Deena by mere milimetres but leaving deep craters where it struck.
Meanwhile, the Teddiursa cubs weren't idle. One of them began preparing a Metal Claw attack, its small paw glinting with a metallic sheen as it charged at Frank. The other circled around, attempting to flank him.
Maya reacted swiftly, intercepting the first Teddiursa with a well-aimed Leaf Blade. Her wing, sharpened to a lethal edge, slashed through the air with precision, striking the Teddiursa and sending it tumbling into a nearby bush. The second Teddiursa hesitated for a moment, its eyes widening in shock at seeing its sibling knocked away, before its gaze hardened with resolve.
ROOOOAAAARRR!
The Ursaring's furious bellow echoed through the forest as it saw its cub in danger. Fueled by rage and its Guts ability, which increased its strength in response to being burned, the Ursaring's power surged. It charged at Deena with renewed fury, its eyes blazing with a mix of pain and wrath.
Deena, now glowing brilliantly as she completed charging her Solar Beam, unleashed the attack just as the Ursaring closed the distance. A blinding beam of concentrated sunlight shot forth, striking the Ursaring squarely in the chest. The force of the attack was immense, and for a moment, it seemed as though the Ursaring might be overwhelmed.
But the Ursaring, with its enhanced strength, roared in defiance and pushed through the Solar Beam's intense energy, its claws glowing as it prepared another Hammer Arm.
Frank's mind raced. He knew they couldn't keep this up forever. "Maya, cover the second Teddiursa!" he shouted, as he positioned himself closer to the pile of bones where Gastly was still hiding.
Maya swooped down again, this time targeting the second Teddiursa with a flurry of Razor Leaves. The sharp, spinning leaves forced the Teddiursa to back off, keeping it at bay, but Frank could see the desperation in the cub's eyes. These weren't just wild Pokémon—they were a family protecting their territory and each other.
"Deena, fall back and use Protect!" Frank ordered, knowing that the next few moments would be critical. Deena immediately summoned a shimmering barrier just as the Ursaring's Hammer Arm crashed down. The force of the blow was tremendous, but the Protect shield shivered and held, deflecting the attack and giving Deena a brief respite.
Frank knew they couldn't keep defending forever. The Ursaring, driven by its Guts-fueled rage and protective instincts, was becoming more dangerous by the second. And the Teddiursa cubs, though young, were as well relentless in their attempts to defend their home.
"I don't wanna fight them. We need to retreat," Frank thought, the reality of the situation settling in. "But how do we get out without hurting them? And also with the Gastly??"
He glanced at the ghost, still hiding in the skull, its wide eyes filled with fear and confusion. "Gastly," Frank called out, his voice firm but gentle. "I know you're scared, but you have to trust me. We need to leave now, or this will get much worse."
Gastly hesitated, its gaze flicking between Frank, the raging Ursaring, and the pile of bones it had been clinging to. The young ghost Pokémon seemed torn, its instincts urging it to stay with what was familiar, even as danger loomed closer.
"Maya, we need to create a distraction! Use your strongest Feather Dance to give us an opening!" Frank shouted.
Maya's wings glowed with vibrant flying-type energy as she summoned a powerful Feather Dance. The air around them swirled with a vortex of razor-sharp feathers, creating a whirlwind that whipped through the clearing. The Teddiursa cubs, caught off guard, were pushed back, shielding their eyes from the onslaught of feathers. Moreover, the attack power of the bear family was rapidly decreasing.
"Deena, now! While they're distracted, we pull back!" Frank commanded.
Deena, still under the protective barrier of her last move, retreated towards Frank. The Ursaring, momentarily disoriented by the Feather Dance, hesitated, giving them the precious seconds they needed.
"Come out, Gastly! We need to leave now!" Frank's voice was urgent, cutting through the chaos of the battlefield. "If you don't want to be killed a second time, you need to come with me. We can protect you! Look at Pyroar and Decidueye—they can be your friends. But these wild Pokémon won't hesitate to kill you if they get the chance. Do you understand me?"
Frank's eyes were locked on the trembling Gastly, who was hovering uncertainly inside the skull of its former body. The young ghost Pokémon had seen enough to know the danger it was in—the bear-like creatures, with their immense strength and primal fury, were intent on attacking. But it also saw that the man and his Pokémon were fighting back, pushing the bears to their limits.
Deena, the Pyroar, had managed to charge up another Solar Beam. Her entire body glowed with intense light as she prepared to unleash the powerful attack. But at the same moment, the Ursaring, its eyes burning with rage, had begun to gather energy for a Hyper Beam of its own. The air crackled with power as both Pokémon released their devastating attacks simultaneously.
The two beams collided with a deafening explosion, shaking the ground and sending shockwaves through the forest. Trees swayed, and leaves were torn from their branches, swirling in the chaotic wind. Frank shielded his eyes from the blinding light, his heart racing as the energy from the clash rippled outward.
"This is our chance!" Frank shouted over the noise. "Come out, Gastly! Come with me! You can stay near the egg if you want, but we have to go now!" His voice was filled with urgency, but also with a pleading tone that cut through the fear and confusion gripping Gastly.
For a moment, the little ghost Pokémon hesitated, torn between the memories of its past life and the instinct to survive. But then, the thought of the egg, the one connection it had left, seemed to spark something within it. Gastly finally moved, drifting out of the skull and towards Frank.
Just in time, too, because the Ursaring, despite the fierce clash, was already getting back up. Its fur was singed, and its breath came in heavy, ragged bursts, but its eyes were still filled with a burning resolve as it started to prepare another Hyper Beam.
"Maya, use Aura Sphere on the Ursaring! And Deena, follow up with Flamethrower!" Frank commanded, not wasting a second.
Maya, the Decidueye, quickly formed an Aura Sphere between her wings, the energy pulsing with a deep blue light. She launched the super-effective move with precision, the sphere cutting through the air and slamming into the Ursaring just as it tried to gather energy for its next move. Deena followed immediately, unleashing a torrent of flames that wrapped around the bear Pokémon, forcing it back with searing heat.
The combined assault knocked the behemoth down again, its massive body hitting the ground with a heavy thud. This time, the Pokémon didn't immediately get up. Though it was not fainted, its once fierce resolve seemed to be weakening. The exhaustion from the battle, coupled with the realization that it was outmatched, was beginning to take its toll.
ROOOAAARR!
The Ursaring let out another furious roar, but this one was different—more of a desperate warning than a battle cry. The Teddiursa cubs, who had been preparing to join the fray, hesitated, their eyes flicking between their fallen parent and the humans standing before them. It was clear now that the bear family was reluctant to continue the fight. They were cornered, frustrated, and painfully aware that they were defending their home against an overwhelming force.
"This is our chance," Frank said, his voice low but firm. "Let's go, slowly."
He began to back away, his movements careful and measured. Deena and Maya followed suit, their eyes never leaving the Ursaring and its cubs. The tension in the air was palpable, with each side watching the other intently, waiting to see who would make the next move. Only Gastly, who had drifted close to Frank, seemed to have its focus elsewhere. The young ghost Pokémon was looking at Frank and his Pokémon with a mixture of awe and newfound trust.
As they made their retreat, the Ursaring remained in place, its chest heaving with each breath. It watched them go, its eyes filled with a simmering frustration, but also with a reluctant acceptance that the battle was over. The Teddiursa cubs, sensing their parent's decision, did not pursue. They stayed close to the cave entrance, their small bodies tense, but no longer aggressive.
Frank and his Pokémon continued to move back until they were far enough from the cave that the Ursaring and its family were just silhouettes in the distance. Only then did Frank allow himself to breathe a sigh of relief. They had managed to escape without further escalation—a small victory, but a crucial one.
When they finally returned to the ranch and entered the Pokémon Center, Rachel was waiting anxiously by the door. Her eyes widened as she saw Frank and the Pokémon, and then they locked onto Gastly, who was now floating beside him.
"What did you find? And why did you bring it back?" she asked, her voice a mix of concern and curiosity.
"Honey, sit down," Frank said wearily, feeling the weight of the day's events beginning to settle in. He glanced at Gastly, who had already floated over to the incubator, its ethereal form gently circling the egg as if drawn to it.
Rachel watched Gastly's movements, her brow furrowing as she tried to piece together what had happened. "Our little friend was hiding in a Charmeleon skull," Frank explained, choosing his words carefully. He decided not to tell her about the fierce battle with the Ursaring family—there was no need to worry her further.
"It looked like the Charmeleon wasn't that old," he continued, his voice softening. "But it was probably killed by wild Pokémon, and I think that this Gastly... it's the ghost of that Charmeleon."
Rachel's eyes widened as the realization hit her. "And now it's circling around the egg and protecting it," she said, her voice breaking slightly. She looked at the Gastly, who was now hovering protectively around the incubator, and tears welled up in her eyes as the full weight of the situation became clear. Although Rachel was always strong person and she had been through a lot of sad or exhausting situations in her profession, this one was too overwhelming even for her.
"Oh no," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. Tears began to fall as she understood the heartbreaking truth. The Gastly wasn't just any ghost—it was the spirit of a mother who, even in death, was looking out for her child, determined to protect it at all costs.
Frank reached out and gently took her hand, his own eyes filled with a deep sorrow. "It's okay," he murmured, squeezing her hand softly. "We'll take care of them both."
Rachel nodded through her tears, her heart aching for the little Gastly who had fought so hard to stay close to the egg. Together, they watched as the ghost Pokémon continued to circle the incubator, its loyalty and love for the egg a poignant reminder of the bond between a mother and her child, a bond that not even death could break.
