Observing the path from where he had come, Tyson didn't see anyone emerge. Instead, a Rattata appeared, scurrying into view.
Curious, Tyson opened his system panel to check the Rattata's information.
It seemed likely that the Rattata's trainer intended to use it as a distraction or bait, but Tyson had seen too much to be easily fooled.
"If this were an Excellent-level Rattata, I'd have remembered it," Tyson thought. A wild Pokémon like this suddenly appearing in unfamiliar circumstances made it clear to him—someone was trying to deceive him.
Tyson didn't alert the Rattata, who acted as though it were just passing by rather than investigating. Instead, he moved quietly toward where the Rattata had emerged.
To avoid drawing attention, Tyson recalled Charmeleon into its Poké Ball and had Eevee accompany him, as its smaller size made stealth easier.
Before long, Tyson spotted someone lurking nearby: Caden, flanked by a Koffing.
It wasn't Tyson's observational skills that uncovered Caden. Rather, Caden had to split his focus between monitoring the Rattata and staying hidden, which left him exposed.
Tyson analyzed Koffing's data via the system panel and let out a sigh of relief when he saw it hadn't yet learned Self-Destruct.
"Good. No need to worry about devastating explosions," he thought. Pokémon with moves like Self-Destruct or Explosion always posed a significant threat—they could force trainers into cautious tactics, giving the opponent opportunities to strike.
"I've got a plan," Tyson muttered to Eevee, kneeling down to whisper instructions. "Rush out with Quick Attack, use Yawn to put Koffing and Caden to sleep, then follow it up with Covet on Koffing. Leave the rest to me."
Eevee nodded, understanding the plan.
In an instant, Eevee darted out as a streak of white light.
Before Caden or Koffing could react, Eevee unleashed a Yawn, enveloping both Caden and Koffing in a wave of drowsiness. Sleepiness began to weigh down their movements.
Tyson was already moving. Releasing Charmeleon from its Poké Ball, he instructed it to use Flamethrower on Koffing. The fiery attack struck true, incapacitating Koffing under the effects of Yawn.
As Koffing faltered, Charmeleon unleashed a second Flamethrower, ensuring it wouldn't recover.
Meanwhile, Tyson closed in on Caden.
Though his body was only ten years old, Tyson's speed as he charged forward was remarkable. In a swift motion, he plunged his dagger into Caden's abdomen and twisted it sharply.
Tyson's eyes glinted with a fierce determination. He pressed Caden down like a predator overpowering its prey, ready to end the encounter.
However, the intense pain caused Caden to fight back with a desperate burst of strength, throwing Tyson off.
Tyson scrambled to his feet, a tinge of frustration in his expression. "I'm still too young," he muttered. "A few years older, and he wouldn't have had a chance to counter."
Fortunately, Eevee was quick to act. With another Quick Attack, Eevee struck Caden from behind, knocking him unconscious.
Wasting no time, Tyson ended Caden's life with a decisive strike.
He paused for a moment, reflecting.
"I could've let Charmeleon handle this," Tyson thought, "but I needed to do it myself."
Though he had seen bloodshed before, Tyson knew his experience in life-or-death fights was limited. As a member of Team Rocket, he understood that such situations would become inevitable. Better to get used to it now.
With Koffing defeated, the Rattata nearby heard the commotion and rushed toward Tyson.
But it was too late. Charmeleon and Eevee worked seamlessly to intercept it. Eevee struck first with Quick Attack, and Charmeleon followed with another well-aimed Flamethrower.
When Tyson found Rattata's Poké Ball, he swiftly captured it to end the skirmish.
After carefully cleaning up the scene, including Caden's body, Tyson ensured no evidence could trace back to him. Then, he resumed his previous activities as though nothing had happened.
By noon, Tyson returned to his cave, intending to rest.
But as soon as he entered, a faint smell of blood caught his attention.
"Odd," Tyson murmured, his brow furrowing. Eevee's Anticipation ability, which often warned of danger, hadn't activated. Still, he signaled Charmeleon and Eevee to remain on guard.
As Tyson ventured further inside, he saw a yellow figure lying on the ground.
Stepping closer, the dim light revealed its identity—a weakened Abra.
"An Abra..." Tyson whispered, his eyes widening in surprise.
The realization struck him. Abra was a Psychic-type with innate teleportation abilities, making it incredibly rare and valuable. Tyson's heart raced.
Team Rocket's previous sweeps had likely overlooked weaker Pokémon like Abra, and its teleportation likely saved it from capture. But now, it lay injured and vulnerable.
Acting quickly, Tyson withdrew a Poké Ball and captured the unconscious Abra.
Once secured, he immediately released it from the ball to begin treatment. Taking out medicine and bandages, he carefully tended to its wounds.
"This is just the beginning," Tyson thought.
Psychic Pokémon like Abra were notoriously proud. Even after healing, they often demanded respect or compatibility with their trainers—especially those without psychic abilities themselves.
Tyson knew that despite capturing Abra, earning its trust and loyalty would be the real challenge.
For now, he focused on treating it, knowing that his next step would require all his skill and patience to form a bond with this rare and remarkable Pokémon.
