------------------

"My feet hurt." Misty plopped down on the mountain trail from exhaustion.

"Come on Misty. We are close." Ash helped her stand up.

"You said that an hour ago." She sulked.

"I asked if you'd like to ride on Onix." Brock said.

"I think I had enough excitement in the past couple of days."

There was no respite for her in the last couple of weeks after she left home. First he suffered a resounding flop at her fishing attempt. Afterwards her bike burned to a crisp because of Ash. Next she had to plow through a terrifying situation with swarms of Beedrill. And now she had to walk for hours on end in the middle of nowhere.

The trio continued their ascent of the mountain. The sun was beginning to frustrate the travelers as there were less and less trees with every step they took.

Around noon they heard a cry for help. They quickly climbed up the trail and witnessed a man being chased by Zubats. Which was an odd thing by itself as the bat pokémon didn't like to hang around outside when the sun was up.

"Ash, help the poor man." Misty shouted.

"Pikachu use Thunderwave on the Zubats."

"Pika chu!" The Zubats fell down from the sky, paralyzed by Pikachu's move.

"Pokéball go!" Both Ash and Brock shouted. Each capturing a Zubat in the process.

"Why are you still catching them Ash?" Brock asked.

"I'm going to leave one for myself to train. As for the rest its for professor Oak to get down off my back for not capturing enough. Lastly I'll send two to keep my mother company. I think they'll be helpful at night." Ash explained.

"Weren't you a rock type specialist Brock? Why did you get yourself one? Misty asked.

"Although, I mainly have rock pokémon, with Onix being my starter. I'd like to catch more types to become a better pokémon doctor." He answered with a smile.

"Thank you children for your help." The man wearing a lab coat and glasses got up and greeted the group.

"Its nothing, mister?" Ash asked.

"Seymour. Just Seymour. I'm a scientist trying to figure out the mystery of Mt. Moon. However I was attacked by a swarm of Zubats. The pokémon here are all riled up because someone installed strong lighting in the cave. And I think someone did it to find the moonstone." The man sighed after quickly narrating his story.

"Well, we're interested in the legend of the mountain as well. Supposedly a meteor crashed down here somewhere. Rumors say that there are moonstones in here." Brock said while holding the guidebook.

"Precisely. That's why I'm here. To solve the mystery once and for all!" The scientist exclaimed.

"Well that's one loud reason as to why they attacked him." Misty sighed.

"Yep. He's too enthusiastic." Ash nodded.

"Pi." Pikachu agreed.

"How about we help you check it out?" Brock offered.

"Thank you. It would be much appreciated." Seymour smiled.

-------

Mt. Moon was a natural maze. But thanks to the lights the group could see within the labyrinth easier. And they assumed that the troublemakers would be at the end of the installation of lights.

"Is it true that Clefairies can be found here?" Misty asked.

"Of course. They're also a topic of my research." The scientist said with excitement.

"What's so special about them?" Brock was intrigued.

"I have a theory that they came from the moon. And that the huge meteorite in the center of the mountain was their spaceship." Stars flashed in his eyes.

"I'm all for pokémon from outer space. But your theory is ridiculous." Ash muttered at the insanity of the man.

"Pika pi." It also didn't find the man credible.

After passing a few junctions, Ash saw a shadow in the distance. A pink tail flashed for a brief second before disappearing behind a wall.

"I think I saw a Clefairy." Ash quicken his pace with the rest following him closely. Just as he wanted to turn the corner a pokémon appeared.

"Clefairy." A pink fairy pokemon was happily chanting its name while holding a piece of rock in its hand.

"Aw. It's so cute." Misty squealed.

"Why not catch it?" Ash suggested.

"No! You can't do that!" The scientist yelled.

"Why?" Ash asked after regaining his hearing.

"What do you mean why!?" Seymour asked.

"Why should I care what you have to say? I don't remember seeing a sign that catching Clefairy was illegal. Many trainers have them." Ash shrugged after seeing the astonishment on the man's face.

"I'll stop you!" Seymour said.

"Touch me and you'll have to answer to Pikachu." Pikachu's cheeks began sparkling.

"Clefairy!" The pokémon cried.

"The pokémon is in danger. Quick." Brock said.

The group saw the Clefairy trapped into a corner by a Meowth.

"Leave it alone you bully." Misty exclaimed.

"Meowth, what do we have here?"

"Pikachu Thunderbolt that cat."

"Pika." The mouse started amassing energy.

"Wait, wait! Why do you never wait!?" The cat pokémon cried.

"I've got places to be, pokémon to catch and think of new running gags." Ash replied.

"What?" Meowth didn't understand what the twerp was saying.

"Trouble. Trouble!" Ash said making everybody look at him with a puzzled expression.

"Did he finally lose it?" Brock whispered.

"What will we tell Mrs. Ketchum?" Misty replied.

"Did somebody say, trouble?" Jessie appeared

"Then make it double." James said.

"Now Pikachu fire!"

"Pikachu!" The team Rocket trio didn't stand a chance. The mass of energy exploded, making a hole in the ceiling and sending the villains on their merry way.

"Is this going to be the norm?" Meowth sighed.

"That dweeb. I'm going to say the motto if it's the last thing I'll do." Jessie bit her shirt in frustration.

"Maybe next time we catch first and motto later." James shrugged.

"Team Rocket is blasting off again!"

"See. And you thought I was mad. Shame on you both. Hmph. And somehow they're older than me." Ash said to Pikachu, giving him a high five. His friends blushed and chuckled nervously.

"Hello there Clefairy are you okay?" Ash asked the pink pokémon.

"Clefairy." It joyfully danced in agreement.

"You can run along now." Seymour said trying to not let anybody catch it.

"Clefairy." It told the humans to follow it.

"It wants us to follow it, Pikachu?" Ash asked his partner to which it agreed.

"I wonder where it's going to lead us." Brock said.

After a couple of turns the group arrived outside. Before them was a crater and in the center was a big stone.

"That's the moonstone." The scientist said.

"That could probably make the pokémon giga evolve." Ash whistled.

"There's no such thing Ash." Misty shook her head.

"Whatever floats your bubble." Ash ignored the nonbeliever.

"Pika pi!" Pikachu made the group look to the right as it seen a group of Clefairy prancing around with stones in their hands.

"Look there are more of them!" Seymour said.

"They're heading towards the big moonstone." Brock said.

"Are they offering those pieces to it?" Misty was puzzeled.

"Who knows. But this seems to be a good place to stay the night. Maybe we will even witness the the legendary moon dance." Ash couldn't wait. Not everyday did you get a chance like this.

The group broke out a camp and watched as the merry fairy pokémon where doing their little routine.

"Come out everyone. It's time to chow down." Ash released this pokémon. Misty and Brock followed suit.

"Oh. You didn't say you've got a new pokémon Misty." Ash looked at the newcomer, Staryu.

"I got him from home right before we left Pewter City. I was tried of being useless in fights." Misty was pumped for some action.

"It's nice to meet you Staryu." Brock patted the star looking pokémon.

"Its gem is really bright. It means its full of vitality." Ash read the information from his Pokédex.

"Of course. Nothing but the best for my water pokémon." Misty hugged Staryu making it somehow blush from the attention.

"What's for dinner Brock?" Ash asked.

"Vegetable stew and some bread. As for the pokémon I have my special poké food. Packed with flavor and minerals." The pokémon and people were delighted by the smell of Brock's cooking.

As the day got darker, more and more stones appeared before the meteor. Once the clock hit midnight the amazing show could finally start.

"Look. They are dancing in a circle around the moonstone." Ash informed the others.

"How pretty!" Misty was in awe.

The smaller moonstones began to flash. A spectacle of light, dancing and chanting filled the whole crater with otherworldly warmth. This image would definitely stay with them forever.

However, suddenly dark gas filled the crater blocking their sight. They've heard a rumbling sound.

"Pidgeotto, Butterfree get rid of the smoke!" The gas dispersed because of their joined Gust attack.

"Where's the moonstone?" Seymour asked.

"Probably down that hole. Probably whoever is behind all this is down there." Brock deduced.

"Less talking more action. Brock let's use Onix to follow the thieves. Zubat you're with me to sound them out." Ash tried to get the situation under control.

"You heard him Onix. Come Zubat." The duo jumped onto the rock snake.

"What about us?" Misty also wanted a piece of the action.

"Take Seymour, Pikachu and the Clefairy through the caves and head down. We'll tackle them from two sides. Be careful okay?" Ash warned her.

"Of course I'll be okay. Come on Staryu, Pikachu." Misty took the rest of the group.

"Let's go Brock." Ash said and Onix burrowed through the hole and began its chase.

"You were a genius." Jessie said as they were riding the stone down the mountain.

"I just knew someday I'll make us proud." James had tears in his eyes.

"Those twerps didn't see us coming." Meowth laughed.

"Although I'm still pissed we didn't do the motto." Jessie pouted. Hours of choreography went down the drain.

"Relax. We'll soon have enough money to not work a single hour anymore in our life. Then you can pay an audience to watch us." Meowth had poké money signs in its eyes.

"Would anyone actually want to watch that."

"I'm star material." Jessie flicked her hair.

"Then how about I blast you away like the shooting star you are." Suddenly Onix cut the way of the moonstone making the delinquent trio fall off.

"That was uncalled for." James propped himself off the ground.

"So was ruining a great moment. But do you see me angry." The fuming eyes of Ash made them shudder.

"We're not scared of you." Meowth said while hiding behind the moonstone.

"No? Then you should be. Zubat Supersonic now.

"Scree!" An obnoxious wave of sound hit team Rocket. They fell down once again, wishing it'll stop.

"Koffing use Poison Gas!" James ordered.

"Sandstorm Onix!" Brock retaliated.

They fell into a stalemate. But fortunately for Ash, Misty came just in time to dish out some watery justice.

"Staryu use Water Pulse." It hit the team straight in their faces.

"How can water confuse on land!?" Meowth started teetering.

"Pikachu this time use Thunder! Maybe that'll chuck them further away this time."

"Pi ka chu!" A bolt of pure shock landed dead center on the trio, exploding and in the process sending the villains on their merry way towards the stars.

"Ash. You ruined the moonstone" Seymour complained as the giant rock was pulverized in the aftermath of the explosion.

"Yeah, wouldn't say that. Look at the Clefairy."

The pokémon were dancing amidst the rubble. Some of them began evolving after being touched by the specks of dust.

"Clefable" The newly evolved pokémon cried in joy.

"How spectacular!" Seymour almost fainted from the overload of emotions.

"Fairy." The Clefairy started gathering the pieces of moonstone.

"They're probably going to the crater with them." Brock was guessing.

"Then let's help them." Ash scratched his head. That was the least he could do.

-------

Finally all of the blocks were sitting nicely in a pile. The pink pokémon started to dance making the stones shine blue. The group stayed there for the night and watched the ritual until they all fell asleep.

"It's a shame I couldn't catch one." Ash said.

"I think that's for the best." Brock tried to cheer him up.

"At least we got some moon stones out of this adventure." Misty said.

"Hey!" A voice called out to them from behind. It was Seymour.

"I'm still pissed with you goggle eyes." Ash puffed.

"Ahem. We'd like to thank you all for helping us. As for me I'm going to stay here and see if the Clefairy and Clefable finally go back to space." He chuckled nervously.

"That man needs to get a life." Ash muttered.

"Goodbye Clefairy. Don't get yourself caught." Misty said.

"Bye Seymour. Don't forget to eat." Brock smiled.

"Pika." Pikachu patted Ash's back as they continued on their way to Cerulean City.
