Chapter 41: Chapter 40: The School Tournament Begins
The new semester had just begun, and the students were settling in, chatting enthusiastically in the classroom.
One by one, they showed off their Pokémon, bragging with their heads held high, making some of the weaker students feel awkward and left out.
Some of the less confident trainers simply stayed quiet, pretending not to hear the discussion.
Just as the chatter reached its peak, their homeroom teacher, Mr. Fujimura, strode into the room, cutting through the noise.
"Alright, listen up, everyone! The school tournament is about to begin. Make sure you sign up if you want to participate."
At those words, the entire classroom fell silent.
For every third-year student, this tournament was a major event.
It was the perfect opportunity to prove their strength, gain recognition, and for the top performers, win valuable rewards.
Even though high-tier items like Attribute Essences were too expensive and rare to be given as prizes, the tournament still offered great incentives.
The prize breakdown was as follows:
3rd place: ¥100,000
2nd place: ¥200,000
1st place: ¥500,000, plus the chance to choose a Pokémon Egg or a Pokémon from the school's collection.
Of course, the Pokémon available at the school weren't exactly top-tier.
Last year's champion had only managed to pick a Pokémon with a total base stat of under 500—far from elite.
But at the very least, the winner could choose a Pokémon Egg.
Even though the eggs weren't high quality, there was always a tiny chance of hatching something exceptional.
After all, this was a school-level competition—it wasn't going to hand out pseudo-legendaries on a silver platter.
For Ryuu, the prizes didn't really matter.
His only real interest in the tournament was gaining experience.
That said… if he did win, he would definitely choose a Pokémon Egg over an already-hatched Pokémon.
Even if the odds were low, there was always a chance he could pull something crazy—maybe even an Elite-tier Pokémon.
And if the protagonist's luck kicked in?
He might just walk away with a pseudo-legendary egg.
Mr. Fujimura handed out the registration forms, keeping things brief.
"Sign up now. The knockout rounds start this afternoon."
Once the forms were collected, they would be submitted to the school's system, which would generate the match brackets and determine each student's opponents.
Since this was a knockout-style tournament, each match would be single elimination.
The moment a Pokémon lost, its trainer was out of the competition.
Because of that, most students would immediately bring out their strongest Pokémon, not wanting to get eliminated because of a careless mistake.
After submitting their names, everyone continued chatting excitedly until lunchtime.
By then, the tournament brackets would be posted.
---
As soon as lunchtime arrived, Ryuu and Shindou Aio quickly finished their meals and headed straight for the announcement board.
Displayed on a large screen was the official tournament bracket.
Aio stood on her tiptoes, scanning the matchups.
"Ryuu, I found our placements!" she said, turning back to him.
"You're first in Group A, and I'm in the last group. We won't be facing each other at all!"
Ryuu had already checked the bracket earlier, and he nodded in satisfaction.
The matchups were pretty decent.
At the very least, he wouldn't have to fight Aio in the first round, preventing an awkward "couple showdown" scenario.
Aio seemed relieved as well.
She had no desire to fight Ryuu so early in the tournament.
Then, someone from the crowd spoke up.
"Ryuu, looks like your first match is against Watanabe Shun from Class 3."
The moment he heard that name, Ryuu's expression shifted.
He quickly glanced up at the screen—
And sure enough, his first opponent was Watanabe Shun.
What a small world.
Shun had been one of the unluckiest guys alive, constantly having his Red Destiny stolen by Ryuu.
If things had gone as they were originally supposed to, Shun probably would have been the tournament champion this year.
But now, he has nothing left.
No rare Pokémon. No crazy luck. No protagonist aura.
The guy was basically doomed.
---
Meanwhile, Across the Room…
Watanabe Shun stared at the screen, his face darkening like a thundercloud.
His first opponent was Ryuu.
The one person he absolutely did not want to face.
He had battled Ryuu multiple times before, and each time, the results had been disastrous.
To make matters worse, his Torchic had turned out to be completely useless.
No matter how much money he poured into training it, the damn thing just wasn't good at fighting.
Even though he had spent a fortune on high-end Energy Cubes, his Torchic's battle potential barely improved.
If he had been paired against anyone else, he might have had a fighting chance.
But against Ryuu?
It was basically over before it even started.
Ryuu casually glanced around, searching for Shun's location.
Even though the guy was basically a dead man walking, Ryuu still kept an eye on him—
After all, Shun had handed him so many free opportunities in the past.
Maybe, just maybe, he'd offer up another one this time.
Within seconds, Ryuu spotted him.
It wasn't hard to find him.
Shun's expression was so ugly that it stood out even in a crowd of hundreds.
His entire demeanor screamed pure defeat.
Honestly, Ryuu almost felt bad for the guy.
Almost.
Still, a quick glance at Shun's "Destiny Markers" confirmed what he already suspected—
No more Red Destiny.
No more Purple Destiny.
The best Shun had?
A Green Destiny.
At this point, Ryuu didn't even bother with Green Destinies.
They weren't worth his time.
Instead, he scanned the crowd again, looking for anyone with better luck.
Unfortunately…
The best thing he saw was a single Blue Destiny.
Tch.
Lame.
Oh well.
For now, he just needed to get through the tournament and secure his win.
---
That afternoon, the first round of the tournament officially began.
Since the school had multiple battle arenas, the entire knockout round would be finished in a single day.
Standing on Field #1, Ryuu was already waiting.
Shun stood opposite him, looking like he wanted to be anywhere else.
Deep down, he knew he didn't stand a chance.
But with so many people watching, he had no choice but to fight.
Taking a deep breath, he gathered his courage.
"Ryuu, I won't lose this time!"
With a flick of his wrist, he threw out his Poké Ball.
"Let's go, Torchic!"
Ryuu smirked.
A Common-tier Torchic against his Gym-level Frogadier?
This wasn't a battle.
This was a public execution.
"Frogadier," Ryuu said calmly, tossing his own Poké Ball.
"End this quickly."
