Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The War That Was
The legends of this world were vast and ancient. But amidst all the stories passed down through generations, the one that echoed the most in my mind was the tale of Arceus, the Creator. They say Arceus breathed life into the world, imbuing it with Aura—the essence that binds all life together and from that spark of divine power, the world took shape.
With it, Arceus sought to populate the world with both humans and Pokémon, each with their roles and purpose. To maintain balance, Arceus created the Legendaries: Dialga, the keeper of time; Palkia, the ruler of space; and Giratina, the guardian of the Distortion World. They, alongside others, were entrusted with overseeing the natural order of the world. Time, space, and even dimensions themselves were bound by these mighty beings, unseen but always present, ensuring the equilibrium of the world was preserved.
In the beginning, humans lived in small, isolated communities, their settlements scattered across vast, untamed lands. The relationship between humans and Pokémon was one of mutual respect and caution. The Pokémon that roamed the wilds were not tamed. They were creatures of power, majesty, and mystery, and humans revered them as such. Only a few Pokémon had found their way into the care of human beings—those that were gentle, docile, and more suitable to domestication. The rest were left in the wild, where they could roam freely, away from human settlements.
However, as with all things in the history of humankind, it wasn't long before greed began to take root. As human populations grew, so did their hunger for more land, more resources, and more power. What was once a peaceful existence began to change. Humanity started to push further into the wilderness, claiming the land as their own. As human civilization expanded, so did the boundaries of their control. And where humans once feared the untamed Pokémon that roamed the wilderness, they now sought to conquer them. Powerful creatures like Tyranitar, Garchomp, and other mighty Pokémon became tools in a new form of war. They were captured, trained, and unleashed onto the battlefield, transforming the creatures of the world into weapons of destruction. What had once been a bond of respect had now become an arrangement of domination.
But this shift was not only about conquering the land. It was about control—control over everything, even the very creatures that had once been revered. Some humans, born with powerful Aura, began to develop supernatural abilities, granting them psychic abilities and the power to control Pokémon with nothing more than their will. These Psychic users became the leaders of the war, their influence spreading like wildfire as they used their powers to bend Pokémon to their control. It wasn't just a battle for survival anymore; it was a battle for power. With their newfound abilities, these leaders gained armies of Pokémon at their disposal. No longer did they need to rely on traditional weapons or military force. With a flick of their hand, they could command mighty Pokémon to fight for them, to destroy anything in their path.
As the power of these Psychic users grew, the war spread far and wide. What started as a small conflict between the regions of Johto and Indigo soon engulfed Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos. Each region became embroiled in the chaos, the land torn apart by constant battles. Cities were destroyed, villages burned to the ground, and entire forests were reduced to ash. The once-pristine landscapes, home to countless species of Pokémon, were left scarred and barren. Pokémon, both wild and tamed, were caught in the crossfire. The natural world was devastated, entire ecosystems wiped out in the wake of the war.
The war itself was brutal, not just in terms of destruction, but in its tactics. Pokémon, once seen as protectors and companions, were now used as instruments of war. Entire families of Pokémon were torn apart. Mother mons watched in anguish as their young were kidnapped, taken to enemy villages where they would be planted as bait to provoke attacks. The cries of mother mons echoed through the lands, a haunting reminder of the cruelty that had taken root. The creatures, driven by instinct, would charge into enemy camps, attacking with relentless fury. The bonds between humans and Pokémon, once sacred and pure, were now twisted into something darker. Those who had once been allies were now enemies, driven by hatred, fear, and the desire for dominance.
The horrors of war spread quickly. It became a never-ending cycle of violence, each side trying to outdo the other with new strategies, new ways to manipulate Pokémon, new ways to destroy. The cities that had once been thriving metropolises were reduced to rubble. The fertile fields that had once sustained entire populations were now barren, scorched by the flames of war. Entire species of Pokémon were wiped from existence, their once-beautiful homes destroyed, their cries lost to the chaos. The human toll was staggering as well. The loss of life was incalculable, with millions of humans and Pokémon dying in the endless conflict.
And yet, despite the overwhelming destruction, there was something more that made the war even more dangerous—the ambiguity of right and wrong. As the lines between combatants and innocents blurred, there was no longer a clear distinction between those fighting for survival and those fighting for power. The war was not just about territory anymore. It was about a shift in values, a shift in how Pokémon were seen and used. The once-sacred bond between humans and Pokémon was all but destroyed. Pokémon had become tools—tools to be manipulated, controlled, and used for whatever purpose the Aura users desired. They were no longer viewed as companions, but as instruments of war. And in the minds of the humans waging this war, that was what they had become—mere weapons to be wielded against one another.
The conflict raged on, the boundaries of regions shifting and crumbling as cities fell, borders were erased, and territories shifted under the weight of the war. The human race, now deeply entrenched in this ongoing struggle, began to lose its way. The once-strong foundations of civilization began to crumble under the strain. Communities that had once relied on the land and their bonds with Pokémon were now divided, each faction fighting for its own survival.
With each passing year, the world became more and more unrecognizable. The beautiful, untouched landscapes of Sinnoh, Hoenn, and Kalos became nothing more than memories. The oceans, once teeming with life, were now lifeless, their waters choked with the remains of destroyed ships and Pokémon. The once-thriving forests of Unova were nothing more than charred skeletons of what they had once been. The cries of Pokémon that had once filled the air were now gone, replaced by the deafening sound of war.
As the war tore through the land, there was a constant question in the minds of those who still clung to hope: Would there ever be an end to this? Would the cycle of violence ever stop?
And then this darkness and violence ignited the fury of the legendaries.
