Chapter 275: Chapter 276: The Blocking Golem
Rex and his companion stood at the mouth of the tunnel, stunned for a good while before coming to their senses. Although they had seen photos of the Meteor Falls before, both felt that only by being there in person could they truly appreciate the majesty of nature.
Now that they were in the Meteor Falls area, with a clear view of the surroundings, Rex first recalled his Carbink and then sent out his Combusken.
On the upcoming journey, they would surely encounter many wild Pokémon blocking their path, and Rex intended to let Combusken gain some experience to prepare it for evolution.
Once out, Combusken excitedly scanned the surroundings, eager to spot any potential opponents. However, it soon noticed the area was very quiet with no adversaries in sight, which left it feeling a bit disappointed.
"Haha, Combusken, we've only just started our journey. There will be plenty of opponents along the way, so stay prepared for battle at any time!"
"Combusken!"
Hearing Rex's words, Combusken's spirits revived, and it gave a few confident cries, then keenly observed the area once more.
"You and Combusken have a great bond. Alright, come on out, Gallade!"
Mai, amused by the interaction between Rex and Combusken, released her Gallade to add to their defenses.
Although Rex had already seen Gallade and Sceptile spar that morning, this was his first opportunity to observe Gallade closely and gather information on it through the Pokédex.
Gallade's upper body was green, while the lower part was white. It had a slender torso, a broad, rounded hip, and strong legs. Gallade's chest and back featured sharp red protrusions, and its arms resembled sickles with retractable blades at the elbows. Its head looked like a warrior's helmet, with a white face, a pale blue crest, and spiky extensions on either side resembling points. Notably, Gallade could only be male.
Gallade was known as the Blade Master, a Pokémon that highly valued etiquette. It could keenly sense emotions of those seeking help and would rush to their aid.
When protecting someone, Gallade extended its elbow blades to make them as sharp as swords and fought fiercely. With its ability to sense an opponent's thoughts, it could make the first move in battle.
Gallade's retractable elbow blades made it a master of iaijutsu, its skill with these blades impressing even the most seasoned warriors.
Gallade, with its psychic abilities, was the ideal partner for Trainers on explorations. Its sharp senses helped it detect danger early, and its powerful skills deterred many Pokémon from causing trouble.
"Mai, when we encounter Pokémon blocking the path later, could we let Combusken handle them first?"
"Of course, that's fine. I'll have Gallade cover Combusken."
Rex then used the Pokédex map to locate the entrance they needed to access the inner section of Meteor Falls.
They were currently only on the outer level of Meteor Falls, where a few wild Pokémon lived. However, the ones in this area were generally weak, as many had lost territory battles deeper within and moved to the outer level.
As they ventured further in, they encountered several wild Pokémon, mostly Zubat and Golbat, and even a Solrock, but none attacked them; they coexisted without conflict.
This left the eager Combusken a bit disappointed, as it was itching for a challenging encounter.
Just when Rex thought they would reach the inner section of Meteor Falls without further obstacles, they came upon a group of Geodude blocking the road completely at the entrance to the inner layer.
This path was their only route to the assigned inner section entrance, so they had no choice but to face these Geodude, which Rex found quite troublesome.
Though not overly strong, Geodude could learn the Explosion move. If they used it in this underground cavern, it could cause the tunnel to collapse.
The resulting falling rocks could create serious issues, potentially leaving them trapped or worse.
"It's too bad my Politoed doesn't have the Damp ability, or it could prevent these Geodude from using Explosion."
Rex muttered to himself regretfully. "Come on out, Golduck!"
Just as Rex was feeling stuck, Mai sent out another one of her Pokémon.
"Don't worry, my Golduck has the Damp ability, so these Geodude won't be able to explode."
As an experienced traveler, Mai knew the risks Geodude posed, so she sent out her Golduck with Damp.
"Geodude, would you please clear the path so we can pass?"
With new confidence, Rex approached the Geodude group and politely requested a way through.
The Geodude had already noticed Rex and Mai when they arrived, but they weren't willing to let them through so easily.
After all, they had been resting comfortably when these two arrived and disturbed their peace, so they weren't inclined to cooperate.
"Looks like it's up to you, Combusken!"
Seeing the Geodude remain unmoved, Rex retreated to Mai's side and called on the eager Combusken.
"Cha-moke!"
Combusken let out a confident cry in response to Rex, then charged toward the Geodude group.
Leaping up, Combusken used its Double Kick on two Geodude, then swiftly followed up with a Brick Break move, landing a powerful blow on their heads.
The two Geodude, overwhelmed by the attack, passed out immediately.
Seeing two of their comrades taken down, the other Geodude became enraged, and three of them used Rollout to launch themselves at Combusken.
Combusken dodged their attacks using Flame Charge, then struck the remaining three Geodude who hadn't reacted in time.
After taking a few hits, Combusken used Brick Break to knock out two more Geodude.
As Combusken was about to take down the last Geodude, the three that had used Rollout earlier came rolling back, their momentum building, increasing their attack power.
At the critical moment, Combusken grabbed one of the charging Geodude by the arm, flipped it over its shoulder, and hurled it forward.
"Boom!"
The thrown Geodude collided with the three incoming Geodude, taking the brunt of the Rollout attacks and fainting instantly.
The other three Geodude, dazed from the impact, exited their Rollout state, their heads spinning.
Seizing the opportunity, Combusken swiftly used Double Kick and Brick Break to knock out two of the remaining Geodude.
After unleashing so many moves in a short time, Combusken was panting heavily, but it was thrilled since the last Geodude posed no threat.
After catching its breath, Combusken dodged the last Geodude's Rock Throw and finished it off with a decisive Brick Break, winning the battle.
