Chapter 28: Lucian Blackthorn
As Eevee fainted, Kay noticed Abra staring intently at him. Without warning, Abra teleported directly in front of them, its eyes fixed on Kay.
"Growlithe, attack!" Kay shouted. Growlithe sprang forward, letting out a fierce growl before unleashing an Ember at Abra.
The fiery attack shot through the air, but Abra easily dodged, its movements smooth and effortless.
In response, Abra raised its hand and sent a powerful Confusion into Growlithe. The attack struck with incredible force, and Growlithe collapsed instantly, fainting in a single blow.
Kay's heart pounded as he took a step back. Abra began floating toward him, its gaze unbroken.
Slowly, it stopped right in front of Kay, its hands raised, palms facing Kay's face.
Kay stumbled back, his foot catching on a rock, and he fell hard to the ground. He scrambled to sit up, his breathing ragged, as Abra hovered over him.
Kay's mind raced. His mother's words echoed in his head: 'Don't take unnecessary risks, Kay. Stay safe.'
He thought of his family and how much he wanted to see them again. As Psychic energy swirled around Abra's hands, Kay braced himself for the inevitable.
But just as Abra was about to release the attack, a dark swirling wave erupted out of nowhere, cutting through the air and striking Abra.
The wave pulsed with an eerie, shadowy glow, hitting Abra with such force that the Psychic-type was thrown backward. It landed on the ground with a lifeless thud, unmoving.
Kay blinked, his mind struggling to process what had just happened. He turned his head slowly to see where this Dark Pulse had come from.
A tall, lean man stood a few paces away. He was impeccably dressed in a sharp black suit paired with a crisp white shirt and a dark tie. A long, flowing coat hung over his shoulders, giving him an air of authority and mystery.
Beside the man stood a sleek, feline-like Pokemon. Its fur was dark, midnight blue, almost blending into the shadows.
A bright red crest crowned its head, matching the feathery collar around its neck and the sharp tail that flicked behind it.
The Pokemon stood with a poised and confident stance, its sharp claws gleaming faintly under the surreal dungeon light. (A Weavile)
The man's eyes met Kay's, calm and unreadable. He gestured slightly, and the Weavile lowered its stance, its fierce gaze still fixed on Abra's lifeless form.
"Who… who are you?" Kay asked, his voice shaking as he tried to steady himself.
The man's gaze remained calm and steady as he spoke. "Do you really think you have time to ask me questions? Shouldn't you check on your Pokemons first?"
Kay froze for a moment, realizing how careless he had been. Without another word, he dashed toward Eevee, who had just started to stir.
Eevee's eyes opened weakly, and although it was clearly exhausted, its expression was heavy with sadness. Kay could see the guilt in Eevee's eyes; it was upset that it had failed to protect his trainer.
"It's okay, Eevee," Kay said softly, crouching down beside it. He pulled a potion from his bag and gently applied it to Eevee's wounds. "You did your best, and I'm proud of you."
As the potion took effect, Kay whispered, "Use Wish, Eevee. It'll help you recover faster." Eevee nodded and used the move.
Kay then hurried over to Growlithe, who was still unconscious. Lifting the small Fire-type onto his lap, he applied another potion to its wounds.
Growlithe stirred slightly, its breathing steadying as the potion worked on it.
Throughout all of this, the mysterious man stood silently, watching with an air of calm detachment.
Kay couldn't help but feel the weight of his gaze, but he focused on ensuring his Pokemons were safe.
Once he was sure neither of them was in immediate danger, Kay stood and turned to face the man.
"Thank you?".
The man raised an eyebrow and smirked faintly. "Do you know why I saved you?"
Kay shook his head, signaling that he didn't.
"I saw potential in you, first, you have two Pokemons despite your young age which is very rare. And your Eevee is very strong. Its condition and moves show you've trained it well and cared for it properly."
Kay listened but didn't feel convinced. The man's reasoning didn't fully add up. There had to be more than that.
Why would someone as strong as him, with a Weavile that could easily handle even higher-ranked dungeons, bother with someone like Kay? And what is he doing in an F-rank dungeon?
The man's sharp gaze lingered on Kay's face, and then he smirked. "You're wondering what I'm doing in an F-rank dungeon, aren't you?"
Kay blinked, startled. How had he known?
"Relax," the man said, his tone almost amused. "I didn't read your mind or anything like that. It's written all over your face, you weren't convinced by the reason I gave you."
The man adjusted his coat and continued. "I'll tell you a bit. My name is Lucian Blackthorn, and I work as a scout for an organization. That's all I can say for now."
Kay narrowed his eyes slightly. The name sounded polished, too perfect, and Kay instinctively felt it wasn't real.
But he didn't press the matter. This man had just saved his life, and questioning him too much is inappropriate.
Then Lucian continued. "As for your question about why I'm in an F-rank dungeon, the answer is simple. I'm scouting talented F-rank trainers for the organization I work for."
"Scouting trainers?" Asked Kay.
Lucian nodded with a faint smirk. "Precisely. And, as it happens, I want to invite you to a tournament organized by my organization. In this tournament, trainers of the same rank face each other, battling to claim first place. The prizes are... exceptionally valuable."
Kay's eyes widened in surprise. A tournament? Like the ones he remembered from the Pokemon series and games in his old world? He hadn't realized such events existed here.
"Is it... legal?" Kay asked hesitantly, his suspicion growing. He couldn't imagine the league allowing such competitions, especially since Pokemons could die in these battles.
Kay was sure that the league would not hesitate to organize such events, but they could not do it because they were afraid for their reputation.
Many people die every day due to dungeon-related incidents, so the league couldn't organize events that could reduce humanity's strength even more.
Lucian chuckled when he heard Kay's question. "No, it's not legal. But the people behind this tournament are... influential. The league doesn't dare to interfere. They turn a blind eye."
Kay's mind raced. This tournament sounded dangerous, but the prospect of earning valuable rewards was tempting.
He faced death inside dungeons two times until now because of his weakness, so he had to become stronger rapidly and to do that he needs money. So, this could be an opportunity to win money and to improve his Pokemons' strength.
Lucian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a sleek black card. "Here," he said, handing it to Kay. "This has my contact information. Call me if you're interested. Remember, the prizes are no joke, a massive sum of money and a rare, valuable item for the winner. Think about it."
Kay took the card hesitantly, feeling its smooth surface in his hand. He nodded slowly, not fully committing but unwilling to dismiss the opportunity outright.
Lucian gave him one last nod, his piercing gaze locking with Kay's. "You've got potential, Kay. Don't waste it."
Without another word, Lucian turned and walked away, his Weavile following closely at his side.
