Chapter 3: First Catch
The crisp air of Cryopeak carried the aroma of freshly baked Mashnots as Ash and Lidon sat outside a small café in Hail City. Ash held a plate of the famous dessert, which resembled a fluffy donut filled with warm, gooey marshmallow. Pikachu, perched on his shoulder, nibbled on its own miniature piece, its cheeks sparking with joy at the treat.
"This is so good!" Ash exclaimed, savoring the sweet marshmallow that melted in his mouth.
"I told you!" Lidon replied with a grin. His snow gear blended into the frosty surroundings, and his black hair stood out against the icy backdrop. "You can't visit Hail City without trying Mashnots. They're the best thing to warm you up."
Ash smiled as he watched Pikachu happily munching. "Pikachu loves them too! Cryopeak sure has some amazing food."
Lidon leaned back on the bench, his brown eyes reflecting the glow of nearby lanterns. "Speaking of amazing, I've got an idea. You're here for an adventure, right? How about we check out Hazu Forest? It's one of the most beautiful places in Cryopeak, and I can show you some cool spots there."
"Hazu Forest?" Ash asked, intrigued.
"It's an ancient forest, home to some of the region's most unique Pokémon," Lidon explained. "Sure, it's cold, but it's worth it. Trust me."
Ash's excitement grew. "That sounds awesome! Let's head there after we finish eating."
With their Mashnots devoured and their spirits high, the duo left the warm café and stepped into the icy streets of Hail City. The snow crunched beneath their boots as they made their way toward Hazu Forest. Pikachu and Taph followed closely, the little Water Pokémon flapping its tiny wings with enthusiasm.
The path to the forest was lined with snow-covered trees, their branches glistening in the faint sunlight. Ash pulled his jacket tighter around him as the cold began to seep in.
"Man, it's freezing out here," Ash said, his breath visible in the air.
"You'll get used to it," Lidon replied, unfazed by the temperature. "This is nothing compared to some places in Cryopeak."
As they ventured deeper into the forest, the towering trees created a canopy of frost and shadow. The silence was broken only by the crunch of snow underfoot and the occasional chirping of distant Pokémon. Suddenly, Ash froze, his eyes darting toward a rustling bush nearby.
"Did you hear that?" Ash whispered.
"Yeah," Lidon said, his voice cautious. Pikachu's ears perked up, and Taph's wings quivered slightly as they all stared at the bush.
A moment later, a small Pokémon emerged. It had a green, moss-like body with a sturdy, beetle-like appearance. Its quadrupedal stance and tiny, muscular arms gave it a unique look, and a sapling sprouted from its back.
"That's a Mospot," Lidon whispered. "They're gentle Pokémon, but pretty rare to find this deep in the forest."
Ash's excitement quickly turned to concern as he noticed the Mospot's condition. The Pokémon's left arm hung limply, and patches of its mossy fur were missing. It looked up at them with large, pleading eyes.
"It's hurt!" Ash said, rushing toward the Mospot. He crouched down, speaking softly to avoid scaring it. "Hey, it's okay. We're here to help."
The Mospot winced but didn't resist as Ash carefully picked it up. Its small body was surprisingly light, and it trembled in his arms.
"We need to get it to a Pokémon Center fast!" Ash said urgently. "Where's the nearest one?"
"Follow me," Lidon said, his voice firm.
The group hurried through the forest, the cold air biting at their faces. Pikachu and Taph ran alongside Ash, glancing at the injured Mospot with worry. After what felt like an eternity, they reached the edge of the forest and spotted the familiar red roof of a Pokémon Center.
Inside, Nurse Joy wasted no time. She gently took the Mospot from Ash and examined its injuries. "What happened to this little one?" she asked.
"We found it like this in Hazu Forest," Ash explained, his voice filled with concern.
Nurse Joy nodded. "Don't worry. We'll take good care of it." She carried the Mospot into a back room while Ash, Lidon, Pikachu, and Taph waited anxiously in the lobby.
The minutes dragged on as they sat in silence, the tension in the room palpable. Finally, Nurse Joy returned with a smile. "The Mospot is going to be just fine. Its injuries weren't too serious, and it's already starting to recover."
Relief washed over Ash as the Mospot trotted out from the back room, its movements lively and energetic. It chirped happily and ran circles around Pikachu and Taph, who joined in the playful antics.
After a few moments, the Mospot stopped and turned toward Ash. It approached him slowly, its large eyes filled with gratitude. It nuzzled against his legs, letting out a soft, contented sound.
Lidon chuckled. "Looks like someone's taken a liking to you."
Ash knelt down, smiling at the little Pokémon. "Hey, do you want to come with me?"
The Mospot's eyes lit up, and it began hopping up and down, chirping excitedly.
"I'll take that as a yes," Ash said, pulling out a Pokéball. He gently tapped the ball against the Mospot, and in a flash of red light, it disappeared inside. The Pokéball wobbled for a moment before clicking shut.
"Welcome to the team, Mospot!" Ash said, holding the Pokéball up triumphantly. Pikachu and Taph cheered, their excitement infectious.
Later that evening, the group returned to Professor Galidon's lab to share their adventure. The professor listened intently as Ash and Lidon recounted their trip to Hazu Forest, the discovery of the injured Mospot, and how Ash had caught it.
"You've had quite a day," the professor said with a smile. "It sounds like Cryopeak is already showing you its wonders."
Ash nodded, his enthusiasm evident. "This region is incredible. I can't wait to see what's next!"
Lidon grinned. "Then you'd better get some rest. There's plenty more to explore tomorrow."
As the sun set over Cryopeak, casting the snowy landscape in hues of orange and pink, Ash felt a deep sense of excitement for the journey ahead. With new friends by his side and endless possibilities before him, his adventure in Cryopeak was only just beginning.
