Chapter 128: Chapter 128: Mankey’s Forest?
"Let's take a break. Come over for lunch," Ron's voice echoed.
Machamp gazed at the deeply dented tree before him, realizing how far he still had to go to master the Finger Pistol technique.
Leaping down from the treetops, Persian and Bellossom attempted to use the Moonwalk technique. However, they could only manage a slight pause in mid-air, unable to achieve the sustained aerial movement Machamp had mastered.
As they halted their exercises, Nidorino and Kirlia were left panting heavily, their faces flushed.
No matter how hard Nidorino and Kirlia tried, their physical limitations constrained their progress. If not for Ron's infusion of Fighting Aura, their current training in the Six Powers would likely have left them riddled with injuries, much like Machamp and Persian had been previously.
Using his Fighting Aura, Ron first aided Machamp and the others in their recovery before everyone began to enjoy the delicious meal he had prepared.
With ample funds at his disposal, Ron never skimped on meals, always ensuring his backpack was stocked with a variety of seasonings and ingredients.
Once they had eaten their fill, Machamp and the others were assigned dishwashing duty.
Suddenly, Persian became alert, its gaze fixed deep into the forest.
Kirlia released its Psychic abilities, scanning the surroundings and quickly pinpointing a Pokémon hidden in the bushes.
Bellossom and Nidorino moved to Ron's side to shield him, while Kirlia used its Telekinesis to slowly clear away the shrubbery concealing the hidden Pokémon. Meanwhile, Persian and Machamp prepared to strike if necessary.
Perhaps startled by Kirlia's power, the hidden Pokémon leapt into view—a Mankey.
"A Mankey?" Ron murmured, noting that it didn't even exude the presence of an Elite-level Pokémon. Machamp and Persian visibly relaxed.
The Mankey, however, froze in fear under the intimidating aura of Machamp and Persian, its body stiffening.
In truth, the Mankey had been drawn by the aroma of Ron's cooking. Unfortunately, by the time it arrived, the food was already gone. Disappointed, it tried to leave quietly but accidentally made a noise, drawing Persian's attention.
Locked in a tense gaze with Machamp and Persian, Mankey felt like it was on the menu as an after-meal snack.
As it slowly backed away to the safety of a tree, the Mankey appeared slightly more at ease. However, when Machamp and Persian made the slightest movement, it grew visibly nervous, sweat trickling down its face.
Kirlia, after confirming the Mankey had no hostile intentions, signaled Machamp and Persian to stand down. Ron instructed Kirlia to urge the Mankey to leave.
Right now, Ron's team needed to focus on accumulating strength, and he preferred to avoid unnecessary battles.
"Hello." Kirlia's telepathic voice rang in the Mankey's mind. Startled, the Mankey panicked, frantically pounding on the tree trunk and calling out loudly.
"We mean no harm! There's no need to be so nervous!" Kirlia shouted, switching to spoken words. It was too late. No sooner had the Mankey called out than a cacophony erupted from the forest.
"What a headache. Why is this Mankey so timid?" Ron muttered, exasperated.
At first, Ron had anticipated that the Mankey's infamous temper might lead to a confrontation. To his surprise, Machamp and Persian hadn't even acted, yet the Mankey had already scared itself into a frenzy and summoned reinforcements.
Although Ron was reluctant to disrupt his plans, he decided he might as well deal with the situation now that it had come to him.
Soon, several Mankey and Primeape swung through the trees, agilely leaping before landing in front of the frightened Mankey. To Ron's astonishment, a human was among them.
What was this—some kind of Tarzan? And one who wore clothes, no less.
"Primeape, calm down! Let me figure out what's going on first, okay?" the man said, halting the advancing Primeape group. He then turned to face Ron.
"Hello, I'm Serizawa, one of the rangers responsible for this forest. Could you tell me what you did to that Mankey just now?"
"Wait… Are you Ron, the one who's been helping our ranger team and is basically considered an honorary ranger at this point?"
After the routine questioning, Serizawa took a closer look at Ron and became visibly excited.
Hearing Serizawa's name, Ron recalled a movie he had seen about a "King of Monsters."
"Yes, that's me," Ron confirmed. "As for what happened, while we were eating, my Kirlia noticed the Mankey. I asked it to shoo the Mankey away, but it didn't even touch it. The Mankey was just scared stiff by Machamp and Persian's aura."
The Primeape group questioned the Mankey, which calmed down and corroborated Ron's account. Drawn by the aroma of food, the Mankey had received no attack but was simply intimidated.
"By the way, you mentioned this is Mankey's Forest. Why isn't it marked on any maps?"
With the misunderstanding resolved, Ron grew curious about the name "Mankey's Forest."
"I've only heard of Pikachu's Forest, not Mankey's," Ron added.
"Well," Serizawa explained, "this forest is home to many Primeape and Mankey. Over time, through communication, we rangers found them to be exceptionally cooperative. They've even helped us on occasion, so we named the area Mankey's Forest."
To prove Serizawa's point, a Primeape allowed Ron to pat its forehead, enjoying the gesture with a serene expression.
The peaceful moment was interrupted by a Primeape with a distinctive scar on its face.
Based on his extensive knowledge of Pokémon, Ron deduced this scarred Primeape was either the leader of the group or had an interesting backstory.
But Ron wasn't Ash, so he doubted he could trigger such a storyline.
"That Primeape is the leader of this group," Serizawa explained. "It's at the high Elite level. The Mankey from earlier is its child."
"Primeape, the misunderstanding is resolved. Ron and his Pokémon meant no harm."
Serizawa tried to calm the scarred Primeape, concerned about the disparity in strength. Ron's strongest Pokémon was only at the mid Elite level, and a conflict with the Primeape would end poorly.
"Puh-cha! Puh-cha! Puh-cha!"
While Serizawa struggled to understand the Primeape's words, Kirlia explained its intent: the Primeape wanted a battle with Ron's Machamp.
