Chapter 8
Yu Tian asserted with conviction, “Isn’t that a crime? I think you should be locked up!”
“…”
Qi Sihao appeared utterly speechless: “Why not just film with your Yan Ming brother? Didn’t you say he possesses a beauty that surpasses mine by a hundredfold?”
Yu Tian cast a fleeting glance at Qi Sihao: “What’s the order in which the dishes are served at a meal?”
“?”
Yu Tian stoically confiscated the bowl of noodles Qi Sihao was eating, saying impassively, “Who on earth serves a grand banquet all at once? Don’t they begin with cold dishes first? The hearty main courses arrive last.”
Qi Sihao stared at her incredulously.
Yu Tian continued defiantly, “If I were to feature only my Yan Ming brother in my first video, wouldn’t that be like reaching the summit right from the get-go? While it indeed would be splendid, everyone has already seen him in that light. How could they possibly adjust their expectations when they then see your segment?”
“Do you understand the concept of ‘casting a brick to attract jade’?”
The mere mention of Yan Ming reignited her enthusiasm: “First, I’ll toss out your dull brick, giving myself a chance to enhance my video editing skills, and in the meantime, I can cultivate a relationship with my Yan Ming brother. Once we become familiar, I can then invite him to record a few episodes for me, and I’ll undoubtedly see a surge in viewership!”
“…”
Miss Song Chunxiang returned home about an hour after Yu Tian sent Qi Sihao away.
Her face radiated joy as she hummed a tune, shimmering like a newly bloomed flower.
Noticing her mother’s demeanor, Yu Tian couldn’t resist her curiosity and approached eagerly: “Mom, how did it go with Uncle Yan? Am I going to have the chance to be a flower girl at your wedding?”
“Shoo, shoo, shoo.” Song Chunxiang’s cheeks flushed slightly as she waved her hands, as if to chase Yu Tian away.
Yet, she did not refute the notion.
Could it really be possible?
Would she actually become Yan Ming’s sister?
Yu Tian’s eyes sparkled: “Mom!”
Perplexed by her persistence, Song Chunxiang could only glare at her with mock sternness: “We’re still at the very beginning!”
She sounded somewhat anxious: “At our age, with families to consider, it’s not as simple as it is for you youngsters. Relationships do not just form by themselves; it takes more than mere affection.”
“While Yan Wenhua is admirable, he mentions his son in almost every conversation, which suggests he’s quite attached to him.”
Song Chunxiang sighed: “Your father passed away early, but Yan Wenhua has a different history. He divorced his ex-wife due to issues, yet they have a remarkable son. Given how much he cherishes this child, if the son harbors any dislike towards us, opposes our marriage, or even wishes for a reconciliation between his parents, it could make things challenging for us.”
“Moreover, even if we do become a couple, if his son remains hostile toward me, my life as a stepmother would be troublesome.” Song Chunxiang fretted, “Something in his tone hints that he has a comfortable lifestyle and may be quite affluent. I worry that his son perceives us as trying to rise above our station.”
Having lived to this age, Song Chunxiang was no fool; she spoke earnestly: “Rather than enduring a stifling life, it might be better to remain single!”
Yu Tian blinked: “So, how do you think of him as an individual?”
Song Chunxiang nodded: “He’s a decent man.”
“In that case, don’t worry about other matters!” Yu Tian felt a surge of determination, “Mom, you can pursue love freely—facilitating your connection with Yan Ming is my responsibility! I will unite with him as if we were one entity! As long as you desire it, I will ensure our names are both written into the household register of the Yan family!”
Unfortunately, despite her lofty proclamations in front of Song Chunxiang, the harsh reality was that even a skilled artisan cannot work with insufficient materials.
She hadn’t even managed to add Yan Ming on WeChat.
Fortunately, over the past few days, Yan Wenhua had been away on a business trip, and Song Chunxiang had been engaging in lively discussions with him online, temporarily distracting her from the numerous obstacles they faced.
Taking advantage of this lull, Yu Tian began strategizing the management of her social media account.
Creating a full episode around medical knowledge required careful planning, followed by recording, editing, and post-processing. The entire process was time-consuming. However, as a content creator, maintaining a certain level of activity was essential for enhancing subscriber engagement.
Yu Tian contemplated that she could potentially balance video-making with live streaming.
She decided that her live sessions would focus on health and nutrition.
Given her culinary skills, the first live demonstration of diabetic-friendly snacks garnered significant praise and attracted many new followers, earning her a modest profit through viewer donations.
This unexpected success was both surprising and encouraging.
However, while Yu Tian’s medical content venture showed promise, she still remained at a loss regarding Yan Ming.
She understood how precious an appointment with a doctor of his caliber was. As a medical student, she found herself unable to secure a consulting spot under the pretense of needing a check-up on her eyesight to get closer to him.
Fortunately, her residence wasn’t too far from the First Affiliated Hospital where Yan Ming worked. Thus, according to his consulting schedule, Yu Tian would stroll around after meals for several days, hoping for a chance encounter.
Alas, she had yet to see him even once.
Initially, Yu Tian felt disappointed after each unsuccessful attempt, but gradually she resigned herself to the idea that fate might not allow their paths to cross.
Nonetheless, the habit of post-meal walks had inadvertently taken root.
One evening, after a hearty meal, Yu Tian set out for her customary stroll to aid digestion.
Through the vast canopy of the camphor trees, the sky glowed with a soft, dusky hue as day transitioned to night. Though the sun lingered on the horizon, the moonlight gradually emerged, casting a gentle glow over the treetops and illuminating the rooftops of the nearby aging homes.
The city seemed to slip into a leisurely pace, shedding the hustle and bustle of daylight, with clusters of people scattering the streets, indulging in post-dinner strolls. Nearby, elders gathered to play chess, and children frolicked in the nearby playground.
Time felt as though it slowed, the atmosphere infused with serenity.
As Yu Tian sauntered along, she realized she had been prodded out by Song Chunxiang for a quick garbage disposal and had hastily left without changing clothes, clad in her faded and oversized loungewear, her hair strewn about in disarray.
Fortunately, she was not well-known in the vicinity. After discarding the rubbish, she ambled without a care, pondering themes for her next medical science segment.
Before she realized it, she had unconsciously wandered to the small park beside the First Affiliated Hospital.
This lush park adjacent to the hospital was perfectly designed for the surroundings.
Within the hospital, the atmosphere often felt oppressive and somber, but this patch of green provided a respite for patients and families wishing to unwind. Because it was located near a residential area, a group of middle-aged women had gathered to practice square dancing, adjusting their speaker in preparation.
After encircling the park, Yu Tian found herself approaching the entrance of the hospital, where several doctors emerged after their shifts.
With curious anticipation, she lifted her gaze.
Then she spotted Yan Ming.
Dressed in a simple yet stylish shirt, his ordinary attire stood out as anything but commonplace, making him the most radiant figure in the crowd.
Despite her efforts to encounter him amid countless strolls, fate rendered her attempts futile. Now, dressed in such a casual and unrefined manner, it was peculiar that she would run into him like this.
Yu Tian found herself unable to lament her luck any further.
She should have seized this rare chance for a casual conversation.
But Yu Tian simply could not bring herself to approach him.
Her appearance was far too…
In that moment, embarrassment flooded her senses; her mind was consumed with the singular wish of going unnoticed by Yan Ming.
However, the more she wished to hide, the more inevitable fate seemed to conspire against her.
To access the parking lot of the First Affiliated Hospital, one must traverse the small park. Though Yan Ming had originally been fixated straight ahead, for reasons unbeknownst to her, he turned his head and glanced directly in her direction.
Yu Tian’s heart raced as she watched him momentarily falter, then furrow his brow before decisively making his way toward her.
He had seen her.
In an instant, Yu Tian felt as if all her cognitive abilities had been stripped away.
She could focus on only one thought:
Under no circumstances could Yan Ming see her in such a disheveled state, meandering near the park.
Yet the specific section of the park where she stood now was entirely open, leaving her no tangible cover apart from the elderly women preparing for their dance routine.
In an impulsive moment—whether a reflexive response or a stroke of sudden ingenuity—Yu Tian darted into the midst of the square dance group.
The elderly women stumbled momentarily at her entrance, muttering their discontent.
“Why is such a young girl joining our routine? Don’t you all prefer to hit the gym instead? Our group is for ladies above forty!”
Yu Tian felt heat prickling her cheeks.
With a face of mock seriousness, she quipped, “My inner self is aged fifty; I’m a soul within a tender exterior.”
“…”
Regardless, hiding within the square dance group felt undeniably safer than being spotted by Yan Ming.
After all, merging into the group was akin to a drop of water disappearing into the ocean!
Yet, good fortune dwindled swiftly, as fate seemed intent on thwarting her.
No sooner had she managed to secure a position within the square dance group than the leading woman stepped to the front and powered on the speaker.
Before Yu Tian could even brace herself, the women surrounding her erupted into a synchronized rhythm, following the music with exuberance.
Caught up in the loud, infectious melody of the square dance, Yu Tian had no choice but to awkwardly mimic the movements of the women, desperately attempting to keep pace despite finding herself a half-beat behind.
She was no drop of water merging seamlessly into the sea.
Instead, she resembled a distinctly garish oil slick!
Clearly afloat and completely out of sync.
And the situation she fervently hoped would not occur did indeed unfold.
Losing sight of Yu Tian, Yan Ming didn’t immediately walk away; rather, he surveyed his surroundings before focusing on the square dance group and marching right up to her.
Stay calm.
Yu Tian mentally prepared herself.
Dressed as she was, with unkempt hair and hiding among the vibrant square dance group, Yan Ming might not recognize her.
Do not overthink it.
As long as she remained composed.
Surely, Yan Ming would soon depart.
With this thought, Yu Tian began to dance with renewed fervor.
